Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 19, 1987

We all got up at seven o’clock. We have to be at the hospital at nine o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast.

Charlie got Alex his breakfast while I was in the shower.

We left at 8:15 a.m. for the hospital and got there at nine o’clock. After fifteen minutes Alex had his blood taken. I asked Heather if Alex was going to have a sedative. Dr S said she had wanted Alex to have a sedative when he had a LP as he fights during most of the time. Heather said nothing had been ordered and Dr. S is on holidays. Heather asked the relieving doctor and he asked us to come into one of the rooms.

The doctor said he would give Alex a sedative. He checked Alex’s heart, breathing, blood pressure, reflexes and ears.

After that we waited until ten thirty when a nurse gave a Alex a sedative. It didn’t seem to have any effect at all on Alex. Just before twelve o’clock Alex had his LP. He screamed and yelled throughout most of it. The problem was that the nurse had to hold Alex tight which he can’t stand. He finally calmed down the last ten minutes or so.

This time they didn’t have any prizes in the treasure box.

When we went out into the waiting room, Alex was pretty upset. The nurse took the pillow away which really bothered him. Alex cried and cried, it was really difficult to make him happy.

At one o’clock Alex had his I.V. push of Vincristine. Alex was really good, he just moved a little bit and he didn’t cry at all. He said that it hurt, but Vincristine stings when it goes in. We went back to the waiting room.

I asked Lorraine if I could have Alex’s appointment slip. She said there’s nothing on it, I’ll have to find out what he’s coming in for next. A couple minutes later Lorraine left for lunch. I couldn’t believe it, she sure is something else. She never lets you know right away like the other nurses. I asked Heather after Lorraine had left and she filled it in.

When we went to get our next appointment Joan wasn’t there. The women that was taking over said oh you want an appointment. Then she said four weeks that’ll be let see December, January, February, some time in February. I thought what is she talking about, I said it’s for four weeks. She said oh yes that’s in November, how about November 20th that’s on a Thursday. Then I said but it’s for four weeks. It told her I wanted an afternoon appointment. She said why, you came in the morning today why can’t you come in the morning. I told her we came in this morning because Alex had an LP. She said I can’t give you an afternoon appointment. I’m just not sure how the appointments work. I’ll have the other girl give you a call.

We left and I thought I don’t believe this. Charlie said they overbooked this morning. It sure is frustrating waiting around. That’s what really bothers me.

Alex fell asleep on the way home. He woke up when we got home. For the rest of the afternoon he was really cranky, there was no pleasing him.

We had dinner at five o’clock. After dinner we watched TV. Alex was pretty upset, he cried at almost anything.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed after ten o’clock.

I did the dishes, watched TV and did my knitting. I finished writing in the journal. I’ll be going to bed soon.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 8, 1987

Alex woke up around seven o’clock and wanted his prize from Grandma. I told him to go to his room and I would bring in the basket. Alex picked one and it was a cookie mix.

I went back to sleep and was woken up by Alex hitting me in my back. He wanted me to play with him. I told him I would be there in a few minutes and promptly fell asleep. In came Alex again asking me what was taking so long, I figured I had better get up. I had a shower which made Alex really cranky. He started pounding on the door. Charlie took him into the spare room and they played with Alex’s cars.

I had breakfast and got dressed. I played with Alex for awhile then I got Alex ready for his nap.

I tided up the house and did the dishes. I had lunch, Alex had macaroni before he had his nap.

We left at two o’clock for the doctors office. We saw Dr. W, he wants to see Alex ever month. Dr W said that Alex looks better than he did the last visit. The doctor said Alex’s behaviour and eating consumption could be affected by the medication.

Afterwards we went to the bank, to pay my MasterCard bill. Then we went to the mall and came home.

Alex played for about an hour then we had dinner. We went downstairs for our exercising.

I gave Alex a bath and got him ready for bed. I did the dishes and while I was doing them I realized I had forgotten to give Alex Methotrexiate. I felt absolutely sick about it since it was suppose to be given last Monday (three days ago). Alex was fast asleep so I didn’t wake him up.

I put away Alex’s toys. I still had a terrible feeling in my stomach. I just can’t see how I could forget to do it. I couldn’t concentrate on anything so I figured I might as well go to bed. Before I went to bed I checked on Alex. He needed to go to the bathroom, I picked him up and took him to the bathroom. This woke him up so I gave him the methotrexiate. I felt better but not by much. I went to bed after ten o’clock

I tided up the house them vacuumed it.

Charlie went to work early this morning.

The cabinet man came to fix the bathroom cabinet. Half way through vacuuming I told Alex he had to have a nap. I put him to bed and read him a story, then I finished vacuuming. We had lunch then we got ready to go to Alex’s class.

I had no trouble leaving Alex, he didn’t complain at all. I did some Christmas shopping, came home, put away the stuff and went back to the class.

Alex was really excited about the class. They made muffins which they ate in the class and they also got to take one home with a recipe card.

We came home, Alex wanted to go for a walk.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 6, 1987

Alex woke me up at seven o’clock for breakfast. I got Alex his breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

We went to A & B Sound in Surrey to look at a stereo. We decided on the one we had seen at the home show. It comes with a stand, when we got home Charlie started to put it together. We put the old stereo downstairs.

Charlie and I checked the stereo and found it was the wrong one. Charlie phoned the salesman and they told him to phone back in an hour. Charlie phoned back after an hour and fifteen minutes. They said he was still out, that’s when Charlie said when will he be back. He’s been gone for more than an hour. Finally Charlie got a hold of him. The salesman said to bring it back.

Charlie went back to the store. When he left Alex cried and cried.

Nora phoned not long after and asked if Alex could come over to play. I took Alex over and when I came back I cleaned the bathrooms. Then I took the records downstairs and put them in the stereo bench.

Charlie came home and went to connect the speakers up, but they didn’t fit the stereo. Charlie phoned back and they told him oh we gave you the wrong stereo. You’ll have to bring it back. By this time he was pretty cranky. He had to pack it all back into the boxes.

I went to get Alex and we came home. Alex wanted dinner but I told him we would be going out later.

Charlie came home again, they even gave him the wrong stand. Charlie put the stand together and we were able to hear the new stereo.

We went out to eat at six o’clock. Afterwards we went to Mom and Dad’s.

We got home at nine thirty, Alex woke up when we came home and didn’t fall asleep until I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Nora had phoned earlier and asked if Kurt was still coming over this afternoon. She said she had some errands to do.

Kurt came over at one o’clock. Alex didn’t play very well with him. Anything Kurt wanted to play with Alex wanted.

I put away the towels, put away the laundry, did the dishes and tided up the house.

Kurt left at four thirty, I started to cook dinner. Alex didn’t want what I was cooking so he had leftovers. After dinner we went downstairs, Alex rode his bike and I exercised.

I gave Alex a bath and got him ready for bed.

I watched TV and did my knitting. I wrote in the journal and did the dishes. I went to bed before eleven o’clock.

Leukemia Diagnosis; October 4, 1987

Alex woke me up before seven o’clock, he said he’s hungry and wanted his breakfast. I got him his breakfast and watched TV.

Charlie woke up at 7:30 a.m. and I went back to bed. I woke up at ten o’clock, I started to make waffles. We didn’t have any Aunt Jemima mix so I had to make it from scratch. Alex and I had them for breakfast. There were three left, I put them in the freezer.

I had a shower, got dressed and got Alex’s diaper bag ready. Then I tided up the house. We left at one o’clock for the home show. Afterwards we went out for dinner and dropped by at Mom and Dad’s.

They had gone up to Blair and Paul’s for the weekend. I was glad to hear everything went well. The way Blair was acting when they were down I wondered if they would have a big fight.

Jeff dropped by when we were there. He’s looking really good, so much more rested.

We left at ten o’clock, Alex had fallen asleep on the sofa. He woke up for a few minutes before we left. Mom gave him a basket of little presents, she said he could pick one once a week. Mom got a bit choked up, they will be leaving for Arizona on Thursday if everything goes well.

We got home at eleven o’clock. I put Alex into his bed, he woke for only a few minutes and went back to sleep.

I had a bath and went to bed.

It sure is a nice TV the color and the picture are so clear.

I started to cook dinner, we ate at six o’clock. We watched TV after dinner.

Alex went to bed at nine o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 2, 1987

Alex woke me up at five o’clock. We went back to bed after I got him changed. Alex woke me up again at 6:30 a.m., he wanted his breakfast. I gave him his breakfast and later we watched TV.

Alex had a shower and started to gag in the shower. He threw up all his breakfast. I got him dressed then I went to the bank, Overwaitea Foods and came home.

Marla phoned to tell us she’s sick and she didn’t think we should go over. Marla said her doctor did a blood test, her blood count and blood pressure are both low. She also said she has no energy. I found it very upsetting as it brought back memories.

Alex had a nap at noon until after one o’clock when I woke him up.

Nora phoned and said Kurt wanted Alex to come over to play. I took Alex over at 1:30 p.m. and came home. It sure is quiet without him in the house. Dumb as it seems I almost feel like I don’t know what to do.

I went to get Alex at 2:45 p.m. Kurt asked Alex if he would come back to his house after they came back from school.

Alex went back to Kurt’s house at three thirty. I came home, did some knitting and cleaned up the kitchen.

I went and got Alex at 4:15 p.m. Kurt said can I come over to Alex’s house. Nora said no another day. I told him he could come over Monday afternoon.

We came home and Alex said he wanted Nachos. I made them and we watched TV. After dinner Alex went to watch Mr Dressup and play.

We went downstairs around six o’clock to exercise. Afterwards Alex wanted something to eat.

I told him it was time to have his bath. He said he wasn’t going to. I told him he could have a bath and play afterwards or go to bed. He started to cry and scream. I had quite a time getting him to wash up and brush his teeth.

Alex went to bed before eight o’clock. I watched TV, wrote in the journal, put away Alex’s toys and did the dishes.

I’m going to go to bed soon.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 1, 1987

I couldn’t believe it Alex woke me up at 6:30 a.m. I can’t remember when he woke up so early. I was glad I had gone to bed early or else I would have been really tired.

Alex and I had breakfast then we watched TV. Charlie woke up at 7:30 a.m.

I had a shower and got dressed. I washed the fridge and did the dishes.

Alex and I went outside, I washed my car and Alex rode his bike. Alex decided he wanted to water my garden and he promptly watered me instead! It wasn’t too funny at the time. He was quite annoyed when I sent him inside to change, since he was wet as well.

By the time I finished and came upstairs Alex was having lunch. I played with Alex in his room then I told him to go for a nap. He was quite upset until I told him his friend does it every day. Alex decided this was okay and he went to bed.

Alex slept until 1:30 p.m., I wrote in the journal while he was asleep. I went downstairs to exercise, Alex came down and rode his bike.

Charlie went to work before three o’clock. While Alex was asleep the maintenance man came to replace the fire alarm.

Alex and I went to K-Mart. When we were leaving Alex fell down and hurt his foot. He said he couldn’t walk so I told him we couldn’t go to McDonald’s like he wanted to. Alex said no my foot is okay I can walk now. I told him I couldn’t carry him as I would have to carry the tray. We went to Woodward’s and Toy City then we came home.

Alex closed the closet door and pinched his hand. Poor guy he’s having a rough night!

I gave Alex a bath, got him ready for bed, got him to brush his teeth and read him a story. Alex was asleep by 8:30 p.m.

I watched TV and wrote in the journal. I’ll go to bed soon.

Alex woke me up just after seven o’clock, he wanted to pick a prize. I told him to go ahead, he came back and asked me to open it. Then a little while later he asked me to get him his cereal. I got up and gave him his cereal, it was 7:30 a.m.

I sat and watched TV, while Alex had his breakfast. I had a shower and got dressed. The maintenance man is to come between nine and nine thirty.

The fire alarm started beeping again after we had a shower. Charlie went and turned the power off. He asked the painter if he knew what it might be. He said it might be the moisture from having a shower as it is beside the bathroom.

I got Alex dressed and ready to go out. They’re painting the outside of the house, it’s probably better to go out. We went to get Alex his Halloween costume and came home around noon. We had lunch and shortly afterwards Kurt came over to play with Alex. I told Nora any time between four and five o’clock.

Alex and Kurt played really well together. It nice to see them together. The only problem is that I have a hard time understanding Kurt. Alex and Kurt were looking in the fridge. Kurt said I’d like some doke. Charlie thought he had said dope! I really didn’t know what he had said, finally we figured it out.

Nora came to get Kurt and they left at four thirty. I started to make dinner, Alex wanted something right away so I gave him plain macaroni. We had macaroni and cheese after five o’clock.

Around six o’clock Alex said he was tired so we had better go for a walk to wake him up. I told him, not after yesterday as he threw a temper tantrum right on the street. Alex said I’ll be good, I won’t bring my bike and I won’t scream any more. I said okay but you had better be good. He said okay.

Alex was good on his walk he didn’t complain at all.

Alex refused to have a bath and I was too tired to argue with him. I just let him watch TV on our bed.

I did the dishes and tided up the house. Then I watched TV until nine o’clock. I read in bed for awhile.
