Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 31, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself then I had a shower and got dressed. After breakfast I vacuumed the house. Alex watched TV while I did some housework.

After lunch Patrick came over and asked Alex if he could come to his house to play. Alex got ready and they left together to go to Patrick’s house.

I did quite a lot of work around the house. I phoned Morgan and asked her to send Alex home at three thirty. I wanted Alex to have an early dinner before going trick or treating. When Alex came home his jacket wasn’t snapped up. I asked him why his jacket wasn’t done up. He said that he couldn’t do up his jacket. I asked him if Morgan had helped him and he said that Patrick’s Mama hadn’t come downstairs to help him.

We had dinner around four thirty. Then we got ready to go out. We went out at five thirty, we were planning on going earlier but nobody was out yet.

Alex ended up going out with Kurt and William Andrews. I think it’s better going with someone’s. we went halfway down Westlake then over to Goldstream and half way down Lostlake to our house. When we got home, Alex said trick or treat to Charlie. Shirley and family were there and had gone trick or treating in our area. They had gone to the mall earlier.

The kids played for awhile then we went to watch the fireworks. I also invited Mom to come, we had been down earlier. Mom came up after they had started. The fireworks were quite good.

It was funny when Monique saw Mom she said Hi Grandma! Mom got a real kick out of that. After the fireworks were over we went home. Mom said she wanted to go home, she was tired. Shirley said they had to get the kids home, tomorrow is a school day.

We let Alex have some of his treats then I got him ready for bed. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 30, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock, but I’m not really sure if it was or not. Charlie had changed some of the clocks but not all of the clocks. Alex and I had breakfast, then I had a shower and got dressed.

I phoned Mom to asked her if she would like to come in with us today. We agreed to leave at noon, and that we would pick her up. Mom said she didn’t sleep very good last night and that she wasn’t feeling too good today. I think it’s better that she didn’t drive today.

We picked Mom up at noon and we stopped to buy Charlie a pair of boots on the way to the hospital. They were for work and today was the last day for him to buy them. He had to bring in the slip tomorrow.

Dad was in his room when we got there. Alex wanted to go to the gift shop to get something to eat, so Charlie and Alex went to get something. We stayed until four o’clock. On the way home we invited Mom to come for dinner.

When we got home I started to cook dinner. Mom came over about half an hour later. She said she made the mistake of telling Geordie that they were coming to our house for dinner. She said that Geordie kept on complaining until she finally decided she had better come down so he would stop.

Mom and Geordie didn’t stay very long after dinner, Geordie kept on crying. Mom thought that he was looking for Dad and thought he would be here.

We watched TV then Alex and I cleaned up and picked up his toys in the house. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock, but he didn’t fall asleep until ten o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at ten o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and made breakfast for Alex and myself. I went out around noon to get a present for Naomi and Ken. Alex was really mad that I wouldn’t take him with me. He told me that I make him mad and sad. I told him that I hadn’t been out by myself in a long time and that he should stay with Pa and do something with him.

It took me quite awhile to find something but I ended up buying Naomi an address book, a calendar book and a calendar on Canada. Ken I got a dinosaur puzzle and micro masters. I got home around two o’clock.

Alex’s friends were over when I got back. I did some work around the house. Then we left at four o’clock to eat dinner at a Won Ton House. Just before we left we told the kids it was time for us to go out and they would have to leave. After dinner we went to visit Dad, when we went to his room he wasn’t there but we found him sitting in the lounge watching the hockey game. He seemed quite pleased that we had come. We stayed until visiting hours were over. Charlie and Alex had gone to get something to eat not long after we had got there. Alex always has to have something to eat when we go.

We got home around nine o’clock. I phoned Mom and she said she hadn’t been able to get hold of Dad. I told her that we had just come from there and he was in the lounge.

I got Alex ready for bed and read him a story. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 28, 1988

I woke up at ten o’clock, Alex and I had breakfast, had shower and got dressed. Mom phoned shortly afterwards and asked me if I was going up to the hospital to visit Dad. I told her that Alex was in a funny mood and that I wasn’t planning on it. Alex seemed to be tired and not in the best of moods. Mom wasn’t too pleased about that and she made me feel very guilty about not going.

After I got off the phone I decided I had better try and go, so I asked Alex if he would like to go. Alex said he would and I told him that he had to be good while we were there. Alex said he would. Mom phoned back to tell me that Dad had been moved and gave me the new room number. I told her that we had decided to go and I asked her when she was going. We decided to go together around one o’clock and Mom said she would pick us up.

Alex and I had lunch before we left and got ready. The traffic was quite heavy so it took us quite awhile to get there. We brought Dad some more of the cherry cake and some Halloween cookies we had made. We stayed until four o’clock and came home. The traffic was even worse on the way home. We found out after we got home that one of the bridges to Surrey was closed so everyone was going along Lougheed or the Freeway. We didn’t get home until five thirty. I asked Mom if she wanted to stop on the way home and get something to eat but she didn’t. When she left we went to McDonald’s for dinner. Charlie was cutting the grass when we had left so we brought him something back.

Shirley came over around nine o’clock and stayed for a short while. We were in the kitchen while Charlie was in the living room fast asleep but that’s pretty normal for him!

I put Alex to bed just after Shirley had arrived. After Shirley had left I watched TV and went to bed around eleven o’clock.

Charlie was surprised when he woke up that Shirley had left, I told him that when she had left he was fast asleep!

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 27, 1988

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and woke Alex up. Alex said that he was too tired to go to the class. I told him that once he had his shower he probably would feel better. It took quite awhile but he finally got up and had a shower. Then I made Alex his breakfast and we got ready to go to the class.

I read in the car while Alex was in the class. When the class was over we came home. We had made cookies yesterday and decorated them with blue, orange, and green icing. The orange was for the pumpkin cookies, blue for the witch cookies and green for the cat cookies. We brought some with us when we went to Lanie’s house for lunch. We had to go to the front door since Missy their dog was sitting at the back door. We usually go that way but I didn’t want to take any chances even though she was waging her tail.

Marla told me that she would have to go into to have her cysts removed. They were benign but the doctor said it would be better if they were removed. She said it was really hard waiting to find out if they were benign or not. Especially having the mammogram, it was quite painful.

Paxton was really bad when we were there, Marla sent him to his room quite a number of times. Then about half an hour before we were to leave Paxton took the scissors and tried to cut Lanie’s arm. Lanie cried for quite awhile and Paxton was sent to his room. He didn’t stay there very long, he came out yelling sorry Mom.

We left at five o’clock, Charlie had just gotten home from work. We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner we watched TV and Alex and I played a game then he went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at ten thirty.

Alex watched TV while I did some more housework. Kurt came over around four o’clock. Timothy also came over, I think he went to Kurt’s house and then when he found that Kurt was coming here he came as well. They stayed until six o’clock and then we had dinner.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 25, 1988

Alex woke me up at eight thirty, he said that he wanted to have a shower. I got out of bed and got his shower ready. After Alex had his shower I helped him get dry and dressed. Then I had my breakfast and also got Alex his breakfast. I had a shower and got dressed.

Marla phoned while I was getting ready, she said she wondered if we could get together on Thursday instead of today. I told her that would be fine that Alex went to class in the morning.

It was good that she phoned since I didn’t realize that we had decided to get together today. We were just getting ready to go to the hospital to see Dad. Which I wasn’t too thrilled about, I didn’t know what kind of condition Dad would be in and what was going to happen to him.

We got there at one o’clock, Joan, Paige and Mom were there already. Dad seemed pretty good, he said that he had some feeling in his foot. We had to leave the room while the student nurse talked to him. Mom choked up when Joan was talking to her about Dad when we were out in the hall. Joan left soon afterwards, we stayed until three o’clock. Mom asked me to let Geordie out when I got home, so I went there and let him out and came home.

Charlie didn’t get home until six o’clock, he had to work overtime then we had dinner. After dinner I went to Mom and Dad‘s. Alex was really upset with me because I wouldn’t take him with me. I told him that I hadn’t been by myself for a very long time and it wouldn’t hurt him to stay with Pa for one night. I brought Mom some cherry cake that I had made and we sat and talked. Mom said it was really nice that I had come down by myself, it gave use a time to talk without any interruptions. I came home around nine o’clock. Then I watched TV and went to bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock to hear the phone ringing. Alex and Charlie were already up and Charlie got the phone. It was Mom letting us know that she had to take Dad to the hospital. Dad has lost the feeling in his foot and it is also cold. We had invited them over for dinner, so Mom wanted us to know that they would not be coming.

I made breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. Mom phoned back around twelve to ask me if I would phone Jeff and tell him that Dad was back in the hospital. Mom said she would phone me back when Dad had been admitted. For the rest of the day we didn’t do much we were waiting to see when Dad was admitted so we could go up to the hospital.

Mom phoned back again at four o’clock to tell us that Dad was in the hospital, what room he was in and that she was home. I told her that we would go up to the hospital in a little while. I said I was going to take Dad the walkman and could I get some of Dad’s tapes for him. We left shortly afterwards and got the tapes form Mom then we went to a Won Ton House for dinner and went to the hospital.

When we got to the hospital Jeff was already there, he didn’t stay long after we got there. Dad told us that his foot was still numb on and off. He also said that the doctor told him that they would try to operate tomorrow if they could. If they weren’t able to do that they might have to take off his foot. Dad joked around about it so it seemed that he had accepted the facts of his condition. We left at eight o’clock, I would have liked to see Mom but by the time we got home it was getting late and Alex needed to go to bed. He was pretty tired. So when we got home I got him ready for bed then I talked to Mom. I watched TV and then went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 22, 1988

I woke up at ten o’clock, Alex and Charlie were already up and Charlie had gotten Alex his breakfast. I had my breakfast, had a shower and got dressed. We went to Metrotown in the afternoon, Charlie wants to get a pair of work boots. The mall sure was crowded, Save-On-Foods was having their grand opening and it seemed that everyone was coming over to Metrotown afterwards. After the mall we went to get a pizza from Saucy’s Pizza in Port Moody.

We had just parked the car when the person beside us backed out and ht our car. She said did you just park there, I didn’t know there was anyone beside me. She had turned her wheels so far that she had come into our space. Her car was stuck on our cars fender. Three guys came along and helped to get them apart, they had to sit on her can and then when she drove forward they came apart. The one guy told the woman that she should claim privately that the dent on Charlie’s car would only be twenty dollars. Charlie told him that he must be kidding. The guy then said oh you would be really surprised how little it’ll cost. Charlie exchanged information with the woman while I went inside to order our pizza. By that time Alex and I had come out they were finished and we came home.

I cooked the pizza when we came home and we ate dinner around six o’clock. We watched TV after dinner, Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

In the afternoon we did our baking, we made sugar cookies in shapes of Halloween characters and Christmas characters. I also made a Cherry cake and by that time Charlie came home from work.

I started to cook dinner and we ate at five thirty. Then we went to the mall Christmas shopping. We went to Mom and Dad’s after going to the mall. We played a game while Alex watched his tape, we played until eleven o’clock. Charlie looked like he was going to fall asleep during the game! We left to go to the class just after nine o’clock. I did some errands, read for awhile then I went to go get Alex. We came home right after the class. Alex played and watched TV then it was time for lunch. After lunch we made the dough for sugar cookies. I did the dishes and cleaned up the house.

Charlie came home at four o’clock and I started to cook dinner. We ate around five thirty, then we went to the mall to shop for a Christmas present for Mom and Dad. They’re getting ready to go down to Yuma, Dad seems to be quite anxious to get going. Dad sees the doctor next week and if all goes well they should be going the following week.

We went to Save-On-Foods after the mall to get some baking stuff, Alex and I plan on doing quite a lot of baking tomorrow. We got home around nine o’clock, I got Alex ready for bed when we got home. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at ten o’clock. I practically have to force myself out of bed, I’m so tired. Alex was just waking up when I went into his room. I made our breakfast, had a shower and got dressed. I then tided up the house and did the dishes.

We left to go to Alex’s class at twelve forty but before I could get ready to go Alex wanted me to build his waffle town for him. I thought we would be late because we didn’t leave until twelve forty five but we were on time. I did a few errands while Alex was in the class. When I went to get Alex he was really excited to tell me what they had been doing. He said that they had made magnets that Margaret had put in the oven and they had gotten smaller. They got to color them with the felt markers and take them home. We came home right after the class.

Alex watched TV while I did some things around the house. When Charlie came home at four o’clock we decided to go to Mc Donald’s, it’s McHappy Day today. For every Big Mac they sell they donate a dollar to the Ronald McDonald House. We also bought one of their buttons which cost a dollar. We went to the Brick because our bedroom furniture was on sale and they said we could get a refund for the difference. The salesclerk said it would take two to four weeks before we would get it. We walked around Westwood Mall then we came home. Alex had a snack when we got home, watched tv and then I got him ready for bed. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at ten o’clock, Alex wasn’t up yet. When I went into his room he was just waking up. We had breakfast, I had a shower and got dressed. We left to go to the doctors. We saw Dr. C, I told her that Alex still has a cough which he has had since the middle of last month. The doctor checked Alex all over and said that his chest was fine and to watch if he coughs anything up or if anything comes from his nose. If it is green or yellow to let her know. Then she weighed Alex and he now weighs 42 pounds.

We came home and had our lunch. In the afternoon Alex watched his shows while I did the laundry and tided up the house.

Charlie got home at four o’clock. I started to cook dinner. Alex said that he didn’t want to have chicken for dinner he wanted to have steak which was leftover from last night. We ate dinner at five thirty. Shirley phoned at six o’clock and invited us to come over. Alex and I got ready to go to Shirley’s at six thirty .

The kids were playing fine until about an hour after we got there. Alex came running down the stairs and just flung himself into my arms and sobbed away. Shirley asked Brent what had happened but he said that nothing had happened that they were playing school and Alex said that he needed to see his Mom. I asked Alex what had happened and all he would say was that he missed me. I went upstairs with them. Shirley had told them to play something else that it would be better to play something else and not to play school for quite some time. They played war with Brent’s toy soldiers. Alex asked me to come back up a few times but he seemed to be okay.

We left at ten o’clock, and when we got home Charlie said how come you guys are home so late. A pretty normal statement coming from Charlie!

I got Alex ready for bed and I watched TV. The fire alarm went off downstairs, the battery was low, so I took it out. I went to bed at eleven thirty.

Then I had a shower and got dressed, in the afternoon Alex and I played a few games.

At four o’clock Charlie came home from work. I started to cook dinner. Alex asked if he could have canned spaghetti for dinner. I said that I didn’t think that was a very good thing to have for dinner. Alex started to cry and he said that he really wanted that for dinner. I said well if Pa says it’s okay then maybe you can have it for dinner. Charlie said as long as he didn’t have to have it, it was okay with him. So Alex had that for dinner while we had steak for dinner.

After dinner Charlie went to see wrestling while Alex and I went to the drug store to buy Allison a birthday card. When we got home Alex played for awhile and I watched TV. Alex went to bed after watching Alf. I watched TV and went to bed around eleven thirty.

I woke up at ten thirty, I checked to see how Alex was and he was awake. Alex asked me to help him out of bed and then he asked if he could have a fruit cup for breakfast. Alex had two fruit cups and a big glass of apple juice. Alex looks very pale this morning and he says that he isn’t feeling well. I told him that I was having a shower, Alex had a shower as well. We got dressed then it was time for us to have lunch. Alex asked me to sit with him and watch a show. I told him after lunch that I would. Then when we were having lunch I said to Alex that pretty soon we would have to get ready to go out. Alex started to scream at me that I had said I would sit with him. I said to him that I hadn’t said that I wouldn’t, so what was the big deal. Alex kept on going on and on about me sitting and watching TV with him. Then he started to cry. I told him if he would listen to me then he wouldn’t get so upset but he kept on saying that I had promised to sit with him and that now we were going out. What he failed to do was listen to me, I had said I would sit with him and that we would be going out later on to go grocery shopping. Alex just wouldn’t stop going on about it and he wouldn’t stop crying. I told him to stop or I would have to take something away. Alex by this time was almost hysterical and said he couldn’t so I said fine and took away his cars. When I came back into the kitchen Alex apologized. I think he thought I would give his back his cars but I didn’t!

After lunch I did sit with him and watch TV and we did do a puzzle together. I feel that was more than enough I actual shouldn’t have done anything after the way he acted.

At one o’clock we left to go grocery shopping. Alex complained that he was too tired but he was fine once we were there. We got home at two thirty, I told Alex he should go for a nap. If he wanted to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s since they had invited us for dinner. Alex said he wanted a snack then he went for a nap.

I told Mom that I would bring dessert, so I started to make it when Alex had gone for his nap. By the time I finished Charlie had come home from working overtime. We then got ready to go to Mom and Dad’s.

We ate dinner around five o’clock and after dinner we played Monopoly which Charlie beat us very early in the game. He got the two most expensive properties and ended up putting houses on them both and bankrupting first Mom then me and finally Dad. We finished the game at eight thirty and came home shortly afterwards.

Alex went to bed at ten o’clock. I typed in the journal and I’ll probably go to bed soon.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 15, 1988

I woke up at ten thirty this morning, I sure must need this extra sleep. I don’t know why I’m so tired. Alex slept until eleven o’clock. When he saw that I was having a shower he wanted one too. He seemed to feel better after he had his shower.

After our shower we got dressed then it was time to have lunch. After lunch we went to the Home Show at B.C. Place. It sure was raining hard, it took us quite awhile to find a parking space. Some of the lots were reserved parking only but we found one across from B.C. Place at the top.

We put Alex into the play area and it was a lot nicer for us to look around at the exhibits. It was about the same as last year so I found it a bit boring. We left at four thirty and went to Saigon for dinner

Alex was really naught in the restaurant. He argued quite a bit of the time. He said he wanted to go to Grandma’s I told him that we had just been there yesterday and that it would be better if we went tomorrow. Alex said you want me to go there everyday. I said to him I didn’t say that, I said it would be better to go tomorrow. Alex got so upset that he started to cry. I told him he could have a prize when we got home but he still said he wanted to go and carried on about it. I told him if he didn’t stop I was going to take him out of the restaurant. Alex finally calmed down and we had our dinner. That’s one thing I don’t like is when he is naughty in the restaurant. I feel children should behave as other people are around you and they don’t want to hear children crying or complaining.

We came home and I got Alex ready for bed, it was only six thirty but I told him that he was so cranky that he must be too tired. Alex didn’t fall asleep until nine o’clock but he did stay in his bed most of the time.

I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

After I had finished cleaning I had a shower and got dressed. I had lunch at one o’clock. Alex waited for Charlie to come back, Charlie went to get Chow Mien. Then they both had that for lunch.

In the afternoon I paid a couple of bills and wrote Naomi a letter, then I went to mail them and get our mail. For the rest of the afternoon I typed in the journal.

Mom phoned at four o’clock and we talked for forty five minutes. She asked us to come for dinner when I told her Alex wanted to go to McDonalds for dinner. Alex said he wanted to come after we went to McDonalds. Mom said that was okay and she would she us later.

We left for McDonalds shortly afterwards, they had pumpkin buckets for $.49, so we bought one. It’ll be great for Halloween. Alex went into the playroom after we had eaten but it got a little too noisy. Their was a birthday party there as well.

Alex showed Grandma and Grandpa his new bucket, they thought that was pretty neat. Alex played while we played Trivial Pursuit, I think it’s better with more players.

I woke up at seven thirty, I had set the alarm last night. I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast. Alex woke up at eight o’clock. I got him to have a shower, get dressed and then I gave him his breakfast.

About five minutes before we were to go to Gym class Alex said that he couldn’t go. He said because he had a bad cough and that he might throw-up in the class and would I want him to do that. I said I didn’t think that he would throw-up in the class. I wish I had known he didn’t want to go to the class and I would have been able to sleep in. Ten minutes before the class was to start Alex said that he wanted to go to the class. I told him that we probably would be late, but we went anyways. We were ten minutes late but the teacher didn’t say anything she just said hi to us when we got there.

I did some errands then it was time to get Alex. I told the teacher Joan that I was sorry that we were late but that Alex had said he didn’t want to go to the class then he said he did. Joan said that Alex seemed to be in another world. When she told them to do something he just didn’t know what to do.

Alex hasn’t been sleeping too well lately. He has been coughing really badly in the middle of the night and he sounds like he’s going to throw-up. I put the humidifier in his room, at first he didn’t want it on because he said that he couldn’t sleep with it on. At five o’clock he was coughing so badly that Alex asked to have it on. It seems to help him from coughing so much.

When we got home Charlie was still in bed, he had to work until one thirty last night. We watched TV, we didn’t want to do anything in case we woke him up. Charlie woke up at eleven o’clock.

I was then able to make the bed and do some work around the house. By that time it was time for lunch. After lunch I typed in the journal and Alex watched his shows. At four o’clock, Kurt phoned and asked Alex to come over. That was a nice break being by myself for once. I cleaned up the house, reorganized Alex’s room, made Alex more play dough, and started to make dinner.

Nora phoned at six o’clock to let me know that there was an open house at Ranch Park School tonight from seven thirty to eight thirty. She said she thought that it would be a good opportunity to see how the school was. I thanked her and that I would see how Alex was and maybe we would go. I told her that she could send Alex home now. She said they were just finishing coloring and she would send him home.

When Alex got home he showed me what he had colored. He had drawn some dinosaurs and colored them and he had done a really good job.

I told Alex about the open house at the school and Alex said he really wanted to go see the school where Brent and Kurt both go.

We ate dinner then I did the dishes and got ready to go. There were quite a few people there and we found the kindergarten class. Kurt, Patrick and Carlos were there. Kurt came over to Alex and grabbed his hand and took him over to the TV. They had a video playing of their field trip to a pumpkin farm. Then we went to find Brent’s class which was at the other end of the hall. Brent was with another kid playing. Monique was really happy to see us, she ran over to Alex and hugged him quite a number of times. We saw where Brent sat in his class, Alex was really interested in that. It was good for Alex to see where his friends go. Then we went to the Library and came home. Alex wanted to look into every class but I didn’t.

Alex had a snack when we got home then he went to bed. I watched TV and typed in the journal until ten o’clock. Then I went to bed.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 11, 1988

I woke up at nine thirty. Alex was already up and arguing with Charlie. I don’t know what it was about and there isn’t any point in asking since Alex will just get mad anyways.

I had my breakfast, a shower, and got dressed. I was planning on going out but Charlie said that the guy was coming to do the mirror and he wanted us both to be here.

The guy didn’t come until almost one o’clock. He installed the mirror but he said that he wasn’t told to bring the lights. Charlie said he would go and get them and install them himself.

After that was done I didn’t feel like going out. Alex asked if Kurt could come over. I phoned Nora and asked when Kurt got home if he could come over. She sad that it probably would be three thirty or four o’clock.

Alex watched TV while he was waiting for Kurt to come over. I watched a tape since it’s about the only time I can watch it. In between watching the tape I made dinner. I sent them home at six o’clock, Timothy had come over as well. We ate dinner after they had left, Shirley phoned while we were having dinner and asked if we wanted to go over. She said she had rented Fatal Attractions, she said to come over around seven o’clock.

I had quite the time with Alex, he didn’t want the chicken I had cooked. I didn’t realize that Charlie had cooked chicken this morning and that’s what he wanted. Of course he had to wait which made him mad! Then he said I have a great idea, I’ll have your chicken first then I’ll have Pa’s after it’s been heated up! Alex did eat both of them and he finished both, which surprised me! After dinner we got ready to go to Shirley’s. Monique was happy to see Alex, Alex went upstairs to Brent’s room and they played up there most of the evening.

The movie was something else, Shirley and I were practically clinging on to the chair a good part of the movie! We left when the movie was over and got home at ten thirty. I got Alex ready for bed and he finally was in bed at eleven o’clock. I did a few things around the house and went to bed at midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 10, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex was still asleep when I got up, he slept until eleven o’clock. He must have been really tired.

I had a shower and got dressed. I wasn’t hungry so I didn’t have any breakfast. Before I could have a shower Charlie asked me to help him dye his hair. By that time Alex had gotten up and I made him his breakfast.

In the afternoon we went to Oakridge mall, Charlie wanted to get something replaced on his glasses. While he was doing that Alex I and went to Woodward’s. Charlie met us at the toy department. Alex saw a costume he wants for Halloween, he wanted to be Superman. We tried it on him to make sure it fit which it did and Charlie bought it.

While we were in the toy department we saw Bob and his son Richard. Bob said that Maria is pregnant and due in February. He said that Richard is going to pre-school and asked if Alex was.

We wandered around the mall then we went to dinner at Bonanza. Alex sure likes that restaurant especially the dessert section.

After dinner we went to the Chew’s. Laura was there without the baby, she said she had to get out of the house so she left the baby with Paul. She said that they name the baby Neil and that he was born on September 26th.

They were having their Thanksgiving dinner so we didn’t stay long. When we got home we watched TV and I got Alex ready for bed at nine o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock, I sure had a good sleep on the new bed. The mattress isn’t new but we now have a box spring which seems to give better support.

I made pancakes for breakfast, we all had them. Then I had a shower and got dressed. We went to Save-On-Foods to get groceries, we also went to Safeway since Save-On-Foods didn’t have any canned pumpkin.

When we got home I started to make the pies for tonight’s dinner, I told Mom that I would bring the pies for dessert. Shirley phoned just when I was starting to do them. She said that Brent wanted to have Alex over this afternoon and if we weren’t doing anything could we both come over. I told her that I was just about to make pies for tonight’s dessert, that we were going to my parents for Thanksgiving dinner. It seemed like she wanted to talk but I told her that I had better get the pies done since I have to make two.

Alex helped me make the apple pie, then he went for a nap. While he was having his nap I made a pumpkin pie. I was planning on just making a pumpkin pie then Alex said he wouldn’t eat it that he wanted a apple pie. I remember that Mom didn’t like pumpkin so I figured that I had better make another pie.

After Alex had gotten up from his nap we got ready to go to Mom and Dad’s. We went down there around four thirty and ate soon after we got there. Dad said that he had a nap this afternoon, he was getting ready to play Stock Ticker!

After dinner we cleaned up the dining room then we got ready to play Stock Ticker. We played until ten thirty, Alex said he was tired and wanted to go home before that but we had to finish the game.

When we got home I got Alex ready for bed, I told him that is was Pa’s turn to read a story since I had read him one this afternoon. Alex didn’t ask Pa to read him a story, he went to bed without one.

I watched TV and went to bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Charlie went and had a shower, the delivery guys are coming today for the bedroom furniture. I had my shower after he was finished and while I was in the shower I heard the doorbell ring and guess who?! I asked Charlie to get my clothes, Charlie had a fit and told me to stay in the bathroom until the guys were gone. They weren’t in the house yet so I went and got my clothes and got dressed. Charlie was muttering away as to why I hadn’t gotten my clothes before I got into the bathroom.

All the furniture came in boxes and the delivery guys don’t open them for you. We unpacked the boxes once they had left. Before we got it set up Mom and Dad came over, Mom said that Dad wanted to see the new furniture. He had quite the time getting up the stairs. I said it sure if good that you don’t have that many stairs. Dad said yes I’m sure glad!

They said they really like the new furniture, they didn’t stay long Dad was feeling tired.

Alex had a nap in the afternoon while we got the furniture set up. Charlie couldn’t get the mirror on without adjusting it, so he phoned the store and they said they would send someone out on Tuesday. There isn’t any lights with the night deck, the guy will bring that when he comes to fix the mirror.

Alex woke up around three o’clock, he wanted something to eat. I got him a snack and did some work around the house.

We left at five o’clock to go to dinner, we went to a Won Ton House on Kingsway. After dinner we got a newspaper for Mom and Dad and took it to them. We played Trivial Pursuit, which was a lot of fun, it was amazing to think that I actually got some of the questions right! Alex was feeling tired and kept interrupting us, I had brought a tape for him to watch but I think he had seen it too much. Alex had also brought toys but he wasn’t interested in playing. We went home at ten o’clock. I got Alex ready for bed when we got home and Charlie read him a story. I watched TV and went to bed at midnight.

I woke up at nine o’clock, I was tired from getting up early yesterday. Some people think I have it easy since I get to sleep in but I seem to require more sleep then most people.

Alex was already up and Charlie had given him his breakfast. I had breakfast and gave Alex his medicine. I had a shower and got dressed.

We went to the mall around eleven o’clock. We didn’t buy anything, we just looked around. Alex wanted to buy something as usual but it’s too expensive doing that every time we go.

We came home and I told Alex that he had to have a nap since he was so irritable. Alex was really mad about that he said he wasn’t tired and started to scream and yell. I read Alex a story once he had calmed down and got him into bed.

I typed in the journal while Alex was having his nap. Alex woke up at four o’clock in time to watch Ghostbusters!

We ate dinner at five o’clock. After dinner we played some games. Alex went to bed at ten o’clock. I watched TV and went to be bed at eleven o’clock.

After the shower I helped Alex get dry and dressed then I got dressed myself. Alex and I had breakfast then it was time for us to go to his class.

After I had taken Alex into the class, I sat in the car and read my book until it was time for me to get Alex. We came home right away since Alex was tired. Alex watched TV when we got home.

We had an early lunch then we went down to Mom and Dad’s. Mom had phoned while we were out and told Charlie that Dad had come home this morning.

Dad said he was feeling pretty good except that his back was bothering him. He said that the operating table isn’t flat and that seemed to pull on his muscles. We didn’t stay very long as he seemed to be very tired. When we left he went upstairs to lie down.

We came home and Alex watched TV and played. Alex has been very irritable which is pretty normal for this time of his schedule.

We had dinner at five thirty. After dinner Alex played in his room. I did some typing in the journal but I ran out of the ink cartridge so I watched TV. Then I got Alex ready for bed at seven thirty and read him a story.

I woke up at nine o’clock to hear Charlie and Alex fighting. Alex always gets really irritated when he starts the beginning of his schedule. I find that the less you talk to him the better he is. I made breakfast for Alex and myself then I had a shower and got dressed. Alex said that he wasn’t feeling good and that he couldn’t go to his class today.

I phoned Heather to ask her about the Bactrim. On the bottle it says take one pill daily three times a week. Previously it was two pills daily three times a week. Heather said she would talk to the doctor and if there was any change she would phone me back. She said to follow what was on the bottle.

I got ready to go to the mall at twelve thirty then Alex says that he wants to go to his class. Alex said that he wanted to have lunch first. I told him that if he wanted to go to the class we would have to leave right now. Alex got really mad about that but I told him that I was mad that he had decided to go now and not tell me before so he could have something to eat.

We got to the class on time and Alex took a snack with him in the car. I did a few errands while Alex was in the class then I came back and read in the car until it was time to get him. We came home right away, Alex said he was really tired. They had painted dinosaurs so Alex said he was glad that he had gone to the class.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 4, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex had gotten up earlier and Charlie had gotten him changed, given him a shower and gotten him dressed. By the time I went to make my breakfast, Charlie had started to make Alex’s breakfast. After breakfast I had a shower and got dressed. While I was in the shower the hospital phoned and asked us to come at one o’clock, half an hour earlier. Charlie thought they were going to cancel the appointment again!

We left for the hospital after twelve o’clock, Alex had lunch before we left but I didn’t. Once we got to the hospital we didn’t have to wait long before Alex had his blood test. We waited a long time before any one came to tell us anything. At two o’clock I asked the doctor if we could go down to the cafeteria as Alex wanted to get something to eat. Dr. S said that they were just about to do Alex’s LP. Heather said that she was all by herself. Dr. S said when will the other nurse be back. Heather said in about fifteen or twenty minutes. So we went down to the cafeteria and had something to eat then we went to the gift shop and back to the clinic. We waited until three o’clock then I said to Joan that nothing had been done except Alex’s blood test and when did the Pharmacy close. She said that it closed at four thirty, then she said she would ask the nurse what was happening. She said when she came back that Martina was checking into it. I then went and asked Heather for Alex’s prescription., I told her that I wanted to get it now before they closed.

Alex and I went to the pharmacy and they said it would be an hour before it would be ready. Then we went back to the clinic and then they were ready for us. Dr. S said they shouldn’t have sent you to have Alex’s prescription done, I have been waiting in my office for them to tell me when the other nurse had come back. I told her that they said it was okay for me to go to the pharmacy. She said I know and then we had to wait again, I’m not too happy about that. She was actually nice about it which surprised me.

They had a bit of trouble to get Alex into the right position for his LP. Alex cried through out but he was very good, he didn’t complain or move around which helps the doctor out a lot.

Then we went and I put Alex on a bed which hadn’t been changed and had hair all over it. So I had to change the sheet. I told Alex that I had to go to the pharmacy but I would be right back and would he be okay. Alex said he would be okay. When I came back they were getting Alex’s Vincristine. Alex was very good for that, he didn’t cry at all. We waited about fifteen minutes then we left.

We went to McDonald’s for dinner, the traffic sure was terrible. After McDonalds we came home, there was a message on the machine from Dad. He thought that I had phoned in the afternoon. I phoned him back and he asked how it went today and I told him how we had to wait so long. Dad said he was coming home on Thursday. I said I bet you’re glad about that!

Then I phoned Mom, she said she had just gotten home and if we weren’t doing anything to come down. Alex and I were pretty tired but I figured Mom needed some company, the last few weeks have been pretty hard on her. We stayed until nine thirty and came home. I got Alex ready for bed when we got home then I watched TV and went to bed.

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. Alex played and watched TV while I tided up the house and did the laundry.

After lunch Patrick came to the door and asked Charlie if Alex could come outside to play. Charlie let Alex play with him outside, Charlie said he would keep an eye on them while I did my work around the house. They hadn’t played very long when Charlie said oh no Alex fell down. Then when Charlie had gotten Alex into the house he yelled for me to come quick. I took Alex upstairs and checked his mouth. Alex’s mouth was bleeding quite a bit. Charlie had sent Patrick home then he came upstairs. While he watched Alex I got an ice cube and put it on Alex’s lip, it had swollen quite a lot and knowing that we are suppose to go to the hospital tomorrow, I didn’t want to take him there with it so swollen. The swelling went down, I put almost the whole ice cube on Alex’s mouth. Alex complained but I told him that I had to keep doing it so the swelling would go down.

I phoned to make a doctor’s appointment, I wanted the doctor to look at Alex’s mouth in case the hospital asked. I couldn’t get an appointment with the regular doctor so I got one with a different one. Charlie said we should see our regular doctor and for me to phone back. I told him that it would be better from him to phone so he did and told them that Alex had Leukemia and they said to bring him in between two and two thirty to see Dr. C.

We left shortly afterwards and we didn’t have to wait too long to see Dr. C. she apologized for being late, then she asked us if we had been to the hospital and I told her we hadn’t been yet that Alex had been wrestling with his friend and that he had bitten into his lip and I wanted her to check him. I was really impressed, Dr. C checked Alex everywhere, she checked his head, his face, inside his mouth, his teeth, his arms, legs and his heart. Dr. C said he was fine but if Alex’s mouth started to bleed again he should come in. Dr. C said that if he wasn’t going to the hospital she would like to do a blood test to see if his platelet count was okay. She asked Alex if he had eaten yet and Alex said yes. Dr. C said I didn’t think anything could stop you from eating! Dr. C said that Alex should stay inside for the rest of the day and take if very easy.

Alex came home with me and we watched TV. We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner Alex’s friends came to the door but I told them Alex couldn’t play today. Alex was really mad about that and slammed the door. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock and I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock, Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. I did some work around the house, then we had lunch and left to go to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital around three o’clock. Dad looks good and he said he was walking around the floor. Alex said that he was hungry so Charlie and Alex went downstairs to the cafeteria. They came back with an ice cream cone and chocolate mile for Alex. The ice cream cone was also chocolate. I thought that’s too much at one time.

We left the hospital at five o’clock. We hadn’t driven very far when Alex said he was going to throw-up. I got into the back seat with him and put the blanket around him. I found a plastic bag which Alex threw-up into. After he had thrown-up Alex said that he could go to the restaurant now that he felt okay. Alex had gotten some on his shirt, so there was no way we could go.

When we got home I changed Alex and got him into the shower then he got into our bed and watched TV. We ordered a pizza, I phoned and asked Mom if she had eaten and she said she already had.

I think probably the milk wasn’t any good and also the fact that Alex had apple juice before it didn’t help. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock.

I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself then I had a shower and got dressed. Shirley phoned around eleven o’clock, she said that she was going to drop by if that was okay. Then I talked to Mom and told her that we were going up to the hospital if she wanted to come with us. She said she wanted to go up by herself so we could go out for dinner if we wanted to.

Shirley came around eleven thirty, Charlie arrived back from getting his hair permed shortly afterwards. I made lunch for us, Alex didn’t want what we were having he said that it was yucky. We had grilled cheese sandwiches and Alex had a peanut butter sandwich. Shirley asked me if I would go to a movie with her, Charlie said it was okay with him. We arranged to meet at the theatre then Shirley left so we could get ready to go to the hospital.

We stopped at London Drugs to get a few things. We arrived at the hospital at two thirty. We brought Dad a tin of cookies and my walkman, Mom had brought him some tapes. Dad looks really good, he looks relieved that the surgery is over now. Alex wasn’t too good in the hospital he kept on saying that he was tired. We were in the TV room at this point, I think Alex was more bored than anything. Charlie took Alex for a walk and they came back with something to drink.

We left around four thirty then we went to Shanghai for dinner. After dinner Charlie and Alex dropped me off at the theatre. I didn’t have to wait too long for Shirley then we went inside. We saw “A Fish Named Wanda”, it’s suppose to be the comedy of the year but I thought it wasn’t funny at all. I thought it was pretty stupid!

After the movie Shirley wanted to rent a movie, she thought that way Charlie would have something to watch. We rented “Dark Eyes” which was very slow and boring, Shirley fell asleep through most of it. Tonight was interesting two bad movies!

Shirley left around midnight. I watched TV for a little while then I went to bed.
