Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 31, 1989

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had my breakfast then I had a shower. Alex woke up after I had come out of the shower. I was hoping he would sleep longer. He needs to get more sleep, he’s being playing so much with Tina and Beau.

We left the house at eleven o’clock. First we went to Canada Trust, there sure was a long line. Then we went to a Toyota dealer to buy brake fluid. The light on the Camry for the brake was coming on. Finally we went to West Edmonton mall.

We told Alex we would be just looking at the stores that we wouldn’t be going on any rides. We had lunch first then we went to look for the store that is selling Batman figures. Luckily we found it almost right away. Alex bought Batman, Robin, the Joker and the Penguin.

Throughout the afternoon Alex bought a turtle’s sweatshirt and turtle socks. I bought a rechargeable shaver from London Drugs it might not be any cheaper but there isn’t any sales tax.

We decided to have dinner at five o’clock. First of all Charlie said he wanted to go for fast food, so we walked down to Gourmet World. When we got there Charlie said he wanted to go eat at Bourbon Street instead. Alex said he wasn’t walking all the way back there. Charlie said he would carry him there. If it isn’t bad enough we have to walk all the way there, Charlie has us walk all around the Ice Palace before he fond out which aisle to go down! We finally got to Bourbon Street but the restaurant Charlie was thinking of going to is closed! I sat down while Charlie looked for another restaurant. He decides on another one and they have steak which is what I wanted.

We had quite a time with Alex in the restaurant. Actually we have had a hard time with him all day. Anyways in the restaurant he was fooling around and not behaving himself. I was sure glad when we left!

We went to Superstore, that store is too big. I didn’t care for it at all. The baby is pushing down so much it’s hard to walk around, I had to keep on going to the bathroom! We also had to go to Safeway as Superstore didn’t have any bread without sugar.

Lin and family were home when we got back. Alex played with the children until he went to bed at ten thirty. He sleeps in the sleeping bag which is good for Charlie!

I went to bed at midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 30, 1989

I woke up at nine o’clock. We had quite a time getting Alex to sleep last night. He didn’t want to sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag. All three of us slept in the bed but Charlie slept on the floor during the night.

Lin and Simon took us out for Dim Sum then we went to West Edmonton mall. Lin and her family went home, well they didn’t come to the mall anyways.

We went to Fantasy Land but it wasn’t opened yet. We had to wait about ten minutes. Alex was very impatient he wanted to go right away. Alex said I didn’t want to come here but I wanted to go to Victoria. I said I know you wanted to go there. Alex said I didn’t know they had so many fun rides to go on.

Charlie and Alex lined up to buy a day pass. Charlie said it cost $19.95 because it includes the ride on the submarine. If he didn’t get it with the submarine and later went on the submarine it would cost an extra three or four dollars.

The first thing Alex wanted to go on was the play area. You still need tickets to go in it. It has tube slides, a ball area, a very large stairway leading into two different sized tube slides, a bridge from the stairway going to a small slide, building blocks to climb on and a small merry go round. We must have been there for about half an hour. Alex didn’t want to leave but we told him we could always come back later. We didn’t want him to wear himself out.

We went on or I should say Alex went on the cars. First he went on the racing car then he went on the fire truck.

Alex said he was hungry so we went to Gourmet World. Alex was the only one eating anything, we were still full from Dim Sum.

Then Alex had his picture taken in the picture booth. They turned out really good! After that we went to the Submarine. Charlie and Alex went in the line up, I had decided not to go as I thought I wouldn’t be very good for the baby.

I sat down for awhile and read then I walked around. I went back to the submarine and they were still in the line up! I went further down to where the big ship is and sat down.

I then went into Woodward’s and I saw they had Turtle nap sacks, socks and belts.

By the time I came out and went back to the submarine, Charlie and Alex were just coming out.

We went back to Fantasyland, Alex went in the play area, the car ride and the plane ride. Charlie and Alex went on the boat ride. It’s a boat that you have to pedal. It took them awhile to get use to steering it. They just seemed to stay in one spot or go in a circle!

We went to Bourbon Street for dinner. They have a lot of restaurants there along the line of New Orleans style. Alex said he wanted pizza so that’s what we had.

After dinner we walked back to our car which was quite a walk. We were all exhausted by the time we got back to Lin’s house.

Charlie and Alex played video games. Lin and family came back around nine o’clock.

The kids played until quite late. Alex went to bed around eleven o’clock. We went to bed shortly afterwards.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 29, 1989

I woke up at seven thirty. I sure had a lot of trouble sleeping. The motel room we have at Jasper isn’t air conditioned. When I went to sleep last night I woke up a few hours later, I had sweated every where. I had to wear my hair tied back. Then I had a hard time getting back to sleep.

Alex had slept so much yesterday he couldn’t sleep! At midnight Alex said he was hungry and had to have a snack. After I gave Alex his snack we went back to bed. We both had a lot of trouble sleeping except Charlie of course!

I woke up at five o’clock and went back to sleep. Then again at seven thirty. I had a shower and got dressed. Charlie and Alex woke up shortly afterwards. Alex had a shower and got dressed.

We left the motel room after ten o’clock. Alex said he was hungry, so we went to Smitty’s for breakfast. When we sat down at the table the waitress said the power had gone off in the kitchen and we would have to wait.

Alex was really mad that he couldn’t have what he wanted. He said he didn’t want to have a muffin but he wanted to have fries. I had quite a time with him. Alex said so lets leave, I said so leave. Alex walked away from the table but he didn’t leave. Alex was acting so badly that I had to take him into the washroom. I talked to him but I couldn’t yell as there were other people there. I had to talk quite quietly but Alex burst into tears anyways. You would have thought I had really yelled at him.

Alex settled down for awhile but not for long. I finally got my muffin and milk then we left.

Alex wanted to go to A&W but they were closed due to the power failure.

We walked around the stores, I bought Alex a t-shirt. Alex had his heart set on buying a toy. Not a good place to buy toys, so many stores are selling souvenirs. Finally Alex found a transformer battle set he wanted. It was more expensive than Coquitlam stores but it’s expected. Jasper really soaks the tourist, the hotels are so much more expensive than some of the other towns.

We had lunch before we left, we started for Edmonton at one o’clock. Alex wasn’t too thrilled at going for another long drive. At least it won’t be as long as yesterdays drive. Alex slept quite a bit, it’s a four hour drive without stopping. He’s very good in the car, we really can’t complain but compliment him on how well he is.

We got to Edmonton after five o’clock. Charlie couldn’t find the map of Edmonton so we had a heck of a time finding Lin’s house.

Charlie phoned them but they couldn’t remember all the streets. We tried to find their house with the directions but we couldn’t find it.

We went to a store to buy a map then finally we were able to find their house. We were all tired from the drive.

I had a shower which really helped me to revive. Lin was already preparing dinner which was ready by the time I finished.

After dinner we didn’t do too much. Barbara and family were out so we didn’t see them.

Alex had a good time playing with Beau, he’s four years old. They fought off and on but they were pretty good on the whole. Tina and Alex colored his stickers.

We went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 28, 1989

Charlie and I woke up at six or six thirty. I had a shower and got dressed. I finished putting everything in the suitcase.

Charlie woke Alex up, got him to have a shower and get dressed. Alex said he didn’t want anything for breakfast.

I gave Alex a prize before we left for the long drive. Charlie changed his mind and decided to go to Edmonton anyways.

We left at nine o’clock. The drive wasn’t too bad except I feel queasy at any speed over 49 kilometres. When we got further along I did drive quite a bit. I feel so much better when I do!

We stopped to have lunch, we had made our lunch early this morning.

Alex was getting bored with all the driving but he did have quite a few naps on the way.

Charlie thought we should stay at Valemont but I said we might as well go on to Jasper. That was a big mistake. First of all they were constructing the road so we had to sit there while we waited for the pilot car to take us along. After that I got stopped by the RCMP for speeding. I had been doing close to the speed limit but Charlie had told me I was going too slow. Anyways we finally got to Jasper. We had a bit of a time finding a motel. Most of them were already full. We finally did find one but it cost close to $100 a night. They sure rip off the tourists in Jasper.

After we had a shower we went out to eat. We went to A&W. Alex liked that since he gets to have his FRIES! When we finished eating we walked along the street where all the shops are. A lot of them were closing so we didn’t stay very long.

Charlie wanted to go for a drive but Jasper is so small there really isn’t anywhere to drive to.

When we got back to the motel, Alex took out all his toys. Alex had packed a large bucket of toys. He brought his turtles (of course!), batman, cars in the case, micro cars, workbooks, crayons and COPS. Alex setup the micro machines I had given him.

It sure is hot in the motel and unfortunately there is no air conditioning. There should be for the price.

I went to bed at nine o’clock. Charlie got Alex ready for bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast. Then I had a shower and got dressed.

I did the dishes, a lot of laundry and started to pack up Alex and my clothing for our trip tomorrow. I don’t have a lot of clothes to take so my packing is pretty easy. I usually bring quite a few clothes for Alex so he doesn’t run out if he gets his stuff dirty.

After dinner we took Kelly to Mom and Dad’s. I had asked Mom a week or two ago if she was willing to look after Kelly while we went to Edmonton. Mom had said that would be okay. We brought Kelly’s bed, his food, dish, pills and record book. Hopefully he’ll be okay while we’re gone.

We came home at ten o’clock. We heard on the news that there had been a tornado this afternoon in Edmonton. Charlie said there was no way he was going there. Charlie phoned Lin to tell her we weren’t coming. I said well I still want to go somewhere for out holidays. We decided we would go over to Victoria. Alex was happier to go there than to Edmonton.

Alex went to bed at eleven o’clock. I finished packing our stuff and went to bed at midnight.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

We left for the beach at eleven o’clock. It was really hot today, I didn’t expect it to get so hot. I sat in the shade for awhile I was afraid I was going to get burned. Alex had a good time playing in the sand. He made a really big sandcastle with a lake around it. It also had a lot of bridges around it.

Alex got us to take him into the water to help him float in the water. I couldn’t do very much as it’s too hard on my back and my legs.

We came home at two o’clock. Mom and Dad were parked in the driveway. They had taken Bert and Lana to Fort Langley. They sure are nice people and so good to Alex. They said they had a present for Alex at Mom and Dad’s. They only stayed for a short time and left.

I phoned Allison later in the day. She said she had taken a flight from Cupertino to Seattle where they had a forty minute stop over. Then they flew to Bellingham. Her mother met them and drove to her apartment in New Westminster. Allison said she would phone me back later tonight, she had to put the kids down for a nap.

We went to a Won Ton House for dinner. When we got home I phoned Allison, we were planning on going to Mom and Dad’s later. We decided to get together when we got back from holidays.

Alex got his present from Lana and Bert when we went to see Mom and Dad. Alex got twenty small cars, similar to micro machines.

We came home at ten o’clock. We went to bed shortly after we got home.

I woke up at eight thirty. I had breakfast with Alex then I had a shower and got dressed. Later in the morning I got Alex to have his shower and got dressed.

We left after twelve o’clock for Children’s Hospital. Charlie is on holidays for two weeks so he came with us.

There weren’t very many people there when we got there. They were in a rush to get us out today. Margaret asked if Alex was okay this month. I said not exactly. Alex has his cough back again and he threw up a couple of times during the month. Margaret said but he’s fine now isn’t he? I was taken aback, I mean how I am I to know whether he is okay or not. I said I guess so. Dr. S was there she said as long as he’s not throwing up still he should be fine. As usual their attitude stinks!

When I sat down again I said to Charlie they sure are stupid how am I to know if he’s okay?

Margaret sent away Alex’s Vincristine at the time she asked if Alex was okay.

Mary came to take Alex’s blood poke.

It was after two o’clock when Alex had his Vincristine. Alex told me to stay in the waiting area while he had his poke. I was really surprised as he always wants us to come with him. Alex didn’t seem to have any trouble though. When he came out he said he pushed the medicine out himself and the nurse told him if he knew how to put the needle in himself she wouldn’t have a job.

We saw the doctor shortly afterwards. I told her Alex also has a rash under his armpit and he still has a rash on his stomach. Dr. S said he must of touched something then touched his armpit. I found that a bit hard to believe. I asked if it could be a side effect to Mercaptopurine or Methotrexiate. She said it could be but if they sent every child who had an allergy or rash to a specialist they would we swamped.

Dr. S asked when Alex had thrown up. I told her on July 12 and 16.

Charlie took the prescription to the pharmacy. When he came back we left. We went to the cafeteria to get something to eat for Alex. Then we went to the Gift Shop. We had to wait near the elevator before we could get the prescription. Alex was fooling around and complaining. I went outside to sit I couldn’t stand it another minute. Finally Alex and Charlie got the prescription and we were able to leave.

We stopped at Lougheed mall to buy Alex his prize. Alex had fallen asleep in the car on the way. It always takes a lot out of him. Alex picked out Rocksteady of the Turtles for his prize.

We stopped at McDonalds for dinner then we came home.

Alex played for awhile then he went to bed at nine o’clock. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Alex really tired me out running back and forth through the water. I told him not to go so fast as I can’t walk very fast. Alex sure had a good time there. It’s fun to watch him in the water. Charlie came finally, he said he had to park at the petting zoo.

Alex said don’t they have fries here I said they have fish and chips. We had fish and chips then we walked back to the petting zoo. We went on the train before we left.

Alex woke me up just after seven o’clock. He said he wanted his breakfast. Alex went to watch tv while I tried to get up.

We had our breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

Kurt phoned at nine o’clock and asked Alex if he could play. Then Alex couldn’t understand what Kurt wanted. I talked to Kurt, he wanted to come over to our house.

While they were playing I went outside to do the gardening in the front then I swept the garage floor.

Patrick came over while I was gardening. I told him to go on into the house.

They seemed to be getting along quite well but they haven’t played together for sometime now.

I sent them home before noon. I taped over the Batman movie to retape it, so we could get it on one tape.

After lunch I sent Alex for a nap. I want him rested for when he goes to Brent’s party.

Alex slept for about an hour while I retaped the movie. I was just about to go for a nap as well when he woke up.

When Charlie came home at four o’clock we got ready to go out. We took Alex to McDonald’s for dinner. We plan on going out for dinner late. When we came back form McDonald’s, Shirley had left two messages. She said to bring Alex over after seven o’clock and she was making pizza for them. Shirley had told me it wasn’t for dinner and it was at six thirty.

We took Alex to Shirley’s at seven o’clock. There were a few kids there already.

We went to the Keg for dinner, we had to wait about forty minutes before we got a table. It’s our tenth anniversary, hard to believe! I had steak and lobster, Charlie had steak and crabs legs. We didn’t have the salad bar, I find that if I have salad I can hardly eat my dinner.

We went back to Shirley’s house, they had the birthday cake and Brent had just finished opening his presents. We stayed until ten o’clock and came home.

Alex went to bed shortly afterwards. He said it was the best party of the year!

I went to bed as well.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 20, 1989

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I got up about the same time. Alex watched tv while I went downstairs to check on Kelly. Kelly had been howling so I wanted to see what was the matter. Kelly had to go out and couldn’t wait. Kelly had blood on his fur and the floor. He must have had another seizure this morning. That’s a total of five seizures in three days. He sure isn’t doing very well. I left a message for Dr. H on Tuesday morning but I never got a call back from him. Then on Wednesday morning I left another message. Dr. H wasn’t there so I left a message with Dr. R. by four o’clock I hadn’t heard from him either so I phoned again. I was concerned about Kelly and I didn’t know whether to increase his medication. The nurse said he was on a call but would phone back as soon as possible I never heard back from him again. We had gone out at five so maybe he called later.

I had my shower and we had breakfast. I phoned the vet again. Dr. H and Dr. R are both not in today. Dr. I phoned me back, he said to start giving Kelly two pills twice a day. I asked him about the blood in his salvia. Dr. I said he could have bitten his tongue, broken a tooth or put too much pressure on his gums during his seizure. I said I wondered if it was coming from somewhere else. Dr. I said the blood could only come from somewhere else if Kelly had thrown up. Dr. I also said if Kelly has any trouble chewing or eating we should bring him in.

Kelly is doing a lot of pacing right now and sniffing everything in sight. He seems to do alright during the day but once evening comes that’s when the seizures occur. Dr. I said that was because the brain is not so active in the evening and early morning, as it is during the day at least I have an explanation as to why they happen more at those times.

After lunch Patrick came over to play with Alex. Later on they played in the sandbox. Mom and Dad came over, they brought Alex two t-shirts for when he starts school. Mom said she was feeling okay, they had been to Metrotown. They didn’t stay long as they had left Geordie in the house since early this morning.

I did a lot of laundry today, six loads of laundry. Then I put away Alex’s toys while they were in the sandbox.

Patrick went home around three o’clock. Alex stayed out in the sandbox for about fifteen minutes then he watched tv.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. He said my car started fine both times.

Kurt phoned Alex at five o’clock, he came over. Benjamin came to the door at five thirty but I told Alex to tell him we would be having dinner soon.

We sent Kurt home before six o’clock. After dinner I exercised, put away Alex’s toys with the help of Alex, watered the plants, swept the kitchen floor and collected the garbage.

Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. We watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 19, 1989

I woke up after seven o’clock. Kelly had woken me up, he was barking. I went downstairs to see what he wanted. Kelly wanted to go out. He had a seizure at four o’clock this morning. I didn’t know he was having one but Charlie told me when he had come back to bed. So when I came down at seven o’clock, he had another seizure. This time there was blood all over his fur. I had given Kelly a pill after four o’clock and then again after seven o’clock. I don’t know if it was a good idea but I wanted to make sure he didn’t have another seizure. Kelly seems to be okay, he bounces right back.

I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast. Alex woke up shortly afterwards. He had breakfast and got dressed.

Alex phoned Kurt at nine o’clock. He asked Kurt if he wanted to play and he cold come over to Kurt’s house if he wanted. Kurt said no he didn’t want to play. Alex was upset that Kurt didn’t want to play.

Alex phoned Patrick a little later but he couldn’t hear Patrick so he had to hang up the phone. By this time Alex was pretty upset, he said now what am I going to do? I said try not to be too upset, there’s nothing I can do if your friends don’t want to play. Alex played in his room for awhile then Patrick came to the door. I have no idea what he said on the phone but maybe he told Alex he would be over later.

They played in the sandbox form eleven o’clock until noon then Patrick went home.

After lunch we went to the T.D. Bank at Prairie Mall. When we came out to the car the car wouldn’t start. I tried for quite awhile but it still wouldn’t, it’s the battery again. I called BCAA but they didn’t come for more than half an hour. It was really hot waiting for them to come. I started to feel sick, just not my day!

We came home right away, I didn’t want to get stuck somewhere else.

When Charlie came home I told him my car needs a new battery. I said I want the car fixed. Charlie said so what do you want me to do about it, we can’t afford a new car. I said I didn’t say anything about a new car. I’m not well, I’m sick and it’s very hard on me to be getting stuck every time I want to go somewhere. I think he might have finally got my point.

I said I was going out later in his car to finish my shopping Charlie said we might as well go together. We went to Coquitlam centre mall then we went to see Mom. She had to have minor surgery this afternoon. She had a polyp in her colon. A terrible operation, Mom wasn’t able to eat anything since Monday (2 days ago) she was able to have jello and pop. She had the surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital. Mom had freezing in her hip and valium put into her vein. She said the doctor asked her to count to ten and then she doesn’t remember anything after that. She woke up and asked Dad if she had it yet. Dad said yes you’re all finished. Once she was able to get up they let her leave. They had an appointment at Van City so they went there afterwards. Mom said the doctor left her a message that they had removed two polyps and to phone him next week for the results. She said she was glad to get it over with.

I asked her how Dad took it all, was he beside himself with worry? Mom said yes, he didn’t like the idea of her having the surgery. She told him by three o’clock it would be all over with.

We played a game of cards while Alex fell asleep on a blanket on the floor. He must have been really tired. We came home at nine thirty. Alex said he wasn’t feeling very well but he couldn’t tell me what was the matter. Alex had a snack and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I had my snack and was going to bed when I heard Kelly breathing really heavily. Kelly had another seizure, there was blood on his fur again. Charlie cleaned him up and gave him another pill.

We got to bed by eleven thirty.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 18, 1989

I woke up at eight o’clock. Alex had already woken up and was watching COPS on tv. Alex came running into the bedroom to tell me that Kelly was running around. He said I think Kelly is sick. When I went downstairs Kelly was having a seizure. After he had finished I gave him a pill I noticed there was blood in his salvia, maybe he cut his tongue but I couldn’t see anything.

After breakfast I phoned Dr. H and left him a message that Kelly had a seizure.

Then I did the laundry, changed our sheets and exercised. Alex watched tv while I wrote in the journal. He seems to be still recovering from the weekend, he’s still quite irritable.

After lunch I exercised again, it seems to make me feel better. The baby is sitting low and putting a lot of pressure on the lower abdomen. I find I have to go to the bathroom quite a bit but it doesn’t do me much good. The baby is moving around a lot, kicking and punching a lot more active then I remember Alex to be.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at six o’clock. Alex had been playing in the sandbox before dinner. He sure gets himself dirty. When Alex came in for dinner I asked him to change his clothes and wash his feel. Alex wanted to wear his Ghostbusters sweater and sweat pants. I told him if he went outside to the sandbox like he wanted to, he would have to wear a short sleeved shirt. Alex said forget it then I’m not going out again. I said okay, if that’s what you want to do.

When Alex got his sweater on it was backwards. I told him to put it on properly. Alex was mad about that and said who can tell the difference nobody will know. I said just wear it properly. Alex took it off and said no way. Finally Alex did put it on after a big production.

After dinner I exercised and put away Alex’s toys with Alex’s help. Charlie and Alex played Mousetrap before Alex went to bed.

I watched tv and went to bed at ten thirty.

Patrick came over in the afternoon but we had told Alex he couldn’t play today. Alex was really mad, when he went to the door he told Patrick he was having a rough day and slammed the door. I said why didn’t you tell him you couldn’t play? Alex said you want to me yell and scream at him?

I wrote in the journal and almost got caught up again. I exercised and did more laundry.

Nora came to the door at three o’clock. She brought us a bottle of wine for cutting the grass. I told her it wasn’t necessary. Nora said we really appreciate it. They had gone to Spokane and then to Calgary. She said they drove straight down from Edmonton, it took fourteen hours. Nora said that there had been road construction which slowed them down.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. Now that he’s on day shift, every time he comes home he says what’s for dinner? I don’t know why but I find it very irritating. I use to get mad at him but now I find it better to not say anything at all. Today I said do you realize you ask me that every time you come home? Charlie said if you would cook dinner I wouldn’t have to ask. I said at four o’clock I’m to cook dinner, who cooks dinner at that time?

We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner Alex went to play in his sandbox. I exercised, did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen.

Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. Alex wanted to do a lot of things before he went to bed but I told him no. Of course he was mad but he went to bed finally.

I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine thirty. Charlie and Alex were already up. Charlie was making Alex his cereal. I had my breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I spent most of the time doing laundry, putting things away and making sure the house wasn’t so messy.

Patrick came over around two o’clock. It probably wasn’t a good idea for Alex to be playing with him. Yesterday was a awful busy with two parties in one day.

I wrote in the journal for a few hours this afternoon. Charlie went to Save On Foods to develop his film.

Aft four o’clock Benjamin came over to play. The three of them play quite well together. Benjamin is fully though, quite grown up for his age. He told Alex not to be so silly. He kept on saying “now Alex”.

We went them home at five o’clock. We went out to dinner to Wendy’s. We had quite a time with Alex before we left he didn’t want to leave just yet. Charlie had asked him to pack a few toys since we were going to Mom and Dad’s after dinner. Alex got made and yelled at Charlie, I think he started to throw things. I find if I talk to him, I’m able to calm him down. There isn’t much point in yelling at him, it just makes it worse.

When we got to Wendy’s Alex said his throat hurt. I said maybe it’s from yelling. Then when we got inside Alex said he was going to throw up. I quickly took him into the bathroom. Alex threw up twice, he said he felt okay and wanted something to eat. When we got our food Alex couldn’t eat. Alex sure didn’t look very good, he’s very pale. When Charlie had finished eating he took him out to the car.

I wanted to go home instead of going to Mom and Dad’s but Charlie thought he would be okay. Alex laid down on the couch for awhile. He did throw up not long after we got there. Alex wanted to eat his hamburger and fries about half an hour later but he threw up again. Mom and I suggested he have tea. We thought it would help settle his stomach. Alex had tea and cracker which seemed to help.

We played a card game, Mom and Dad were partners and Charlie and I were partners. Alex played with his toys.

We came home at nine thirty. Alex wanted to have his hamburger and fries. I asked him if he was sure he could eat it and wouldn’t throw up again. Alex said he felt okay now. Alex ate about half of the hamburger and fries. Alex went to bed at ten o’clock.

My stomach was bothering me, it was quite upset. I didn’t eat all of my snack. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty. I made muffins for breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. Alex didn’t wake up until much later. We had our muffins together.

We left at ten forty five for Lanie and Paxton’s party. It’s at Glencoe Park near their house. We looked at the map before we left and it looked like it should be just off Glencoe. When we drove along Glencoe Street there were no signs to indicate where the park was. We finally had to ask someone for directions. The park is behind a preschool, so it’s not easy to find. Most of the people were already there. Alex went off with the other kids to play on the swings, slide, etc.

It was a bit cold so I was glad I didn’t wear shorts. They barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch and they also had potato salad, raw cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, fixings for the hamburgers, grapes, cherries and cantaloupe plus Rice Krispies squares.

James had candies in the grass and after the kids had found them they had a sack race.

Lanie and Paxton opened their presents then the kids played for awhile. They each had their own cake Lanie’s was a while cake and Paxton had a chocolate cake.

The kids played some more then we left at two thirty. We rested for awhile before we got ready to go to Benny’s one month birth dinner.

The dinner was at Siu Lan Kung, when we got there nobody had arrived yet, of course we were early as usual.

The dishes came rather slowly, the dishes didn’t start coming until seven thirty. By the time dessert came it was after nine o’clock.

I found it very difficult sitting there for so very long. It causes a lot of pain in my legs. When we went to leave my feet had swollen so much I could hardly keep my shoes on. Then when we did get home I felt really ill, my stomach was really upset. I went straight to bed. Alex was really annoyed, he wanted me to read him a story.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

In the afternoon Patrick and Timothy came over. I said to them why don’t you go to Patrick’s house to play. They said they had just been there and the baby is sleeping. Charlie said what about Timothy’s house. Timothy said is Alex allowed to go to my house? Charlie said of course he is! Alex said he wanted to play here. I told him he could play outside in his sandbox but not inside since yesterday both of them were here for three or four hours. I wasn’t feeling up to having any kids in the house today.

Patrick and Timothy only stayed for an hour and went home. Alex said they told him it was five o’clock and they had to go home. It was only three o’clock but I guess they didn’t want to play outside.

Alex played in his sandbox until it was time for us to go to McDonald’s. After dinner we went to Mom and Dad’s. Alex and Dad played video games and just kept each other company.

We came home at ten o’clock. Alex had a snack before he went to bed. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Last night Alex coughed so much that he threw up. I gave Alex cough medicine at two o’clock then he started to cough again at six o’clock. It was too soon for him to have more cough medicine. Alex did stop after awhile and slept some more.

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

In the afternoon Patrick came over to play, Timothy came over as well a few hours later. I don’t know why he comes over to play with Alex. He seems to get along better with Kurt. Timothy always has to be saying how he can do things. I think because he’s a year older he thinks he’s better than Patrick and Alex.

Unfortunately I had to keep getting up to help them with different things. My legs are really bothering me, it’s all I can do to walk.

Morgan phoned at five o’clock and asked me to send Patrick home. Timothy said he had to go with Patrick. He always does that, he likes to annoy Alex that way.

We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner Alex and I watered the plants and planted his corn and pea seeds. Then we watched tv before Alex got ready for bed.

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

We were planning on seeing Blair and Holly when they arrived last night but they didn’t get to Mom and Dad’s until close to ten o’clock. Mom had phoned at nine thirty to tell me Blair had phoned to tell them that they were having dinner at a pizza place on Austin. I told Mom I was getting Alex ready for bed that we would see them tomorrow morning.

By the time we got ready this morning we got there at ten o’clock. Mom had gone to Eagle Ridge Hospital for a kidney x-ray, Dad had gone with her of course!

Holly’s knee is still quite swollen, she had no ligaments in her knee. Blair said the doctor told her that Holly would have to learn to use the muscle above and below her knee. This afternoon they’re going to UBC Hospital to see a sports doctor. They think he’ll prescribe a line of therapy to help her knee.

Mom and Dad came back at noon. We told them Geordie had an accident all over the house mainly in the living room. Blair and Holly cleaned up the mess while I looked for Geordie. He was hiding behind the living room couch. Charlie finally got a hold of him after we moved the couch and put him outside. Mom said he had never done that before. I said he seemed quite nervous before so maybe he’s not feeling well.

Mom gave him a bath then we all had lunch.

Blair and Holly left for the hospital at twelve thirty. We stayed for awhile and came home.

Charlie couldn’t decide whether or not he should go to work. His throat is really bothering him. I told him I was going out tonight with Shirley so if he stayed home he would be looking after Alex. Charlie said you expect me to look after him when I’m sick? I said I didn’t get any relief when I was sick last week. Charlie said did you have a cold. I said yes. He said oh.

Charlie decided it was too late to phone in sick and went to work. I phoned Mom to ask her if they could look after Alex tonight. She said yes, did Charlie go to work. I said yes, probably because he didn’t want to look after Alex! I told her what he had said.

Shirley came to our house around five thirty. We had dinner at six o’clock. We had quite a time trying to decide which movie to see. I suggested “Great Balls of Fire”. Shirley said she didn’t want to see that. Shirley suggested “Karate Kid III” or “Honey, I shrunk the kids” I said I don’t want to see either of them. We finally decided on “Indiana Jones the Final Crusade” we had to hurry since it started at seven ten.

We took Alex to Mom and Dad’s. Dad said so Charlie went to work. I said yes, I think he didn’t want to look after Alex. Dad said we men try to get out of these things.

When we got to the theatre we were ten minutes late. The movie was really good. I drove Shirley home, her car is in the shop. She had rear ended someone.

I picked Alex up, he and Dad were watching “Howard the Duck”. Mom had gone to the basement to watch tv. She said the show they were watching was too silly.

We came home at ten o’clock. Alex got ready for bed and I went to bed soon afterwards.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 10, 1989

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

In the afternoon we went to the doctors. Charlie went to work.

I asked Dr. C to look at Alex’s rash. I said I had heard about a tick which causes a rash called Lynne’s syndrome. Dr. C said oh no it’s not that. She said it’s a bit red but that could be from it being too warm. If you want you can put ½% of Cortisone cream on it. I said it wasn’t bothering Alex. Dr. C said if it isn’t bothering him I would just leave it alone.

Then it was my turn. I told her we were going on our holidays the last week of July. I was wondering how it would be for me to do any car travelling. She asked me where I was planning on going. I said we were thinking of going to Edmonton. Dr. C said will you shouldn’t drive more than two hours at a time, anyways with Alex you’ll probably have to get out before then.

I showed Dr. C my blood sugar counts. She said you have a few seven that’s quite high. I said the clinic told me as long as they were below 7.8 after meals it was okay. Then Dr. C took my blood pressure and listened to the babies heartbeat on the Doppler. She said to Alex do you hear that and Alex didn’t say anything but turned to me and said did you hear that. I said yes I do, do you hear it Alex. Alex said yes Mama.

Dr. C said I want to see you before you go away. Seriously now you’ll have to come every two weeks soon. She said that phrase “seriously now” a couple of times. I thought it was rather funny.

We came home at three thirty. Alex played while I rested.

We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner we watched tv, Alex went to bed at eight o’clock.

I made bran muffins then I had a shower and got dressed. By that time the muffins were ready. Alex and I each had one, Charlie went grocery shopping.

After lunch we went over to Nora’s. When we came back Charlie was cutting the grass, we swept the sidewalk. That took a lot out of me and I came inside for a rest.

After dinner we went to Mom and Dad’s, they had gone to visit Jeff this afternoon. They said he’s in a pretty bad way. He had surgery on Friday night, the doctor put in a metal ball and pins since his ankle was so badly damaged. Jeff can’t use crutches because he dislocated his shoulder. He had a strap around his shoulder. Jeff told them when they put his shoulder back in it was more painful than anything else. Sounds pretty painful to me! Jeff should be going home early next week.

We came home around ten o’clock. Alex wanted to watch Batman but I told him it was too late and he had to get ready for bed. Alex started to cry. I told him he could watch it tomorrow. Alex finally got into bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I phoned Toppy’s to see if Janet was in today. They said she wasn’t working there anymore. Charlie phoned back and asked where she was working but they said she wasn’t a hairdresser anymore. We took Alex there anyways to get his hair cut. They said to come back at one o’clock. We went to the Sandwich Tree for lunch.

Alex had a donut for lunch then he wanted a sandwich after we had all finished. We both knew he wouldn’t be able to eat much of it. So we told him no and said we were going to K-Mart. Alex was mad and said he was going to hit and punch everything! I said maybe they’ll have batman shirts. Alex said and you’ll buy me one, right? I said it depends on how much it costs. It would have been cheaper to buy him a sandwich!

They had one batman shirt but it was too small. Alex said it was okay, but it was really tight. We said we would go to the mall after he had his hair cut and look for one.

The woman who cut Alex’s hair wasn’t friendly at all, she didn’t even ask how he wanted it cut.

We went to Coquitlam centre and had a hard time finding a batman shirt. We found one at Woodward’s but Alex saw a turtle shirt he liked better. I said that won’t fit Alex, it’s a size four, you take a 6X. Alex was really upset and started to cry. Anyways Charlie and Alex went into the changing room. Alex came running out of the changing room. He said look Mama it fits. That was really surprising to me, they must have made it really big.

We came home and rested before we went out for dinner at Boston pizza. We had quite the time with Alex. He spilt his drink, it seems every time we go there he spills his drink. This time he spilt it all over himself. I took Alex into the bathroom and dried him off. I was really annoyed with him. I can’t understand what happens to him. I told him he couldn’t have another drink as last time he spilt two drinks.

We stopped at Safeway to buy milk and came home. We watched tv and Alex went to bed at ten o’clock.

I did the dishes and tided up the house.

In the afternoon I took Alex to see Dr. C. I wanted her to look at the rash on Alex’s underarm. Marla had said there is a tick call Lynne’s Syndrome which produces a rash and other symptoms. Dr. C said it was a rash from either an allergy or a heat rash. The allergy could be from soap.

We went to the bank afterwards but the line up was so long I decided to come back later. We came home.

Mom phoned to tell me Martina had left a message on their machine. We had seen Mom and Dad earlier at the doctors office. Mom said she phoned back and talked to Victoria. Victoria told her that Jeff is in the hospital. Jeff had been doing some work on the roof. He fell off the ladder when it shifted. Jeff broke his ankle so badly he’ll have to have surgery to put metal pins in the joint. He also dislocated his shoulder. Unfortunately nobody was home at the time and he had to crawl into the house and phone for help. He told Victoria to tell Mom and Dad not to come up for a couple of days since he is in a lot of pain. Mom said Martina was so upset that her father had to come and drive her home.

We went to McDonald’s for dinner then we went to the bank. There was still a long line up but it only took about five minutes and we were through. We went to London Drugs to buy Chem strips and Keytone strips but they were out of the Keytone strips. Then we went to buy Lanie, Paxton and Brent’s birthday present. We went to Toy City first but couldn’t find what we wanted. So we went to Coquitlam Centre. We bought Lanie Play mobile figures, two kids with their bikes and a man selling candies to a girl; Paxton, Lego police bike, a police man, a rescue man and a nurse figures and a small car; Brent, micro master attack patrol.

We got home a seven forty five. I quickly got a tape ready to tape the Batman movie. Alex really likes Batman, he would like me to take him to see the new movie out but I heard it isn’t suitable for children.

We watched all of the movie then I got Alex to get ready for bed. He was in bed by ten thirty.

Mom phoned in the morning to see how we made out at the doctors. I told her I had cancelled the appointment as I had forgotten to collect a urine sample this morning. I wished her a Happy Birthday! I asked Mom if they would be home this afternoon but she said they might be going out.

Morgan, Patrick and Peter were suppose to come over this morning but she phoned to say she had to take Peter to the doctor. Peter has a rash on his back for the last week and thought she had better take him in to make sure it wasn’t measles or chicken pox. Hopefully it’s neither since Alex has been playing with Patrick. Morgan said she would phone me after they got back.

Mom and Dad came over in the afternoon. Mom said she didn’t get anything from Joan, Jeff or Blake yet. Dad said Jeff wouldn’t remember unless someone reminded him. Joan said her parcel would arrive on time because she mailed it a week ago but it didn’t. They left at four thirty.

We left after eleven o’clock. They were outside when we got there. I didn’t realize it was so warm today, I should have worn shorts. I had to go inside since it was too warm for me.

The kids play really well together probably because they haven’t seen each other for so long.

Marla had quite a few calls from work before we could have lunch. I’m use to that happening.

After lunch we all went outside, sat in the shade. We went in after awhile, the kids played in the sandbox.

Lanie gave Alex a invitation to their birthday party next weekend on the 15th.

We left at five thirty and had to come back as I forgot my blood testing machine. I must of really scared Lanie when I drove in the driveway. She practically jumped off her bike. Missy, their dog was out but she seems quite friendly.

I woke up at seven o’clock. I gave Kelly his pill then I had a shower and got dressed. I had breakfast and got ready to go to the hospital.

I actually made it on time today but there were other people waiting already.

I saw Ann first, she said my blood tests were okay and I had put on 2 ½ pounds. She asked me how I was feeling. I said okay how are you feeling?!

I saw Dr. B, she said I wouldn’t have to come for a month. She asked me how old Alex was. I told her he was five and going to Kindergarten in the fall. Dr. B said I thought there was quite a gap between the two. I told her that Alex is sick and that we had decided to wait for awhile. She asked me what was wrong with Alex. I told her Alex has Leukemia and is going to Children’s Hospital fro treatment. Dr. B asked me what type of Leukemia Alex has. I said Lymphoblastic. She said is that ALL and I said yes. Dr. B told me that when she was training in Toronto she worked at a Children’s Hospital. She said she couldn’t stand working there when there were so many sick children there. Dr. B said it has to be the worst thing for a parent to deal with, being ill yourself you can deal with it but in a child it’s very hard. I thought boy she’s very understanding for a doctor. Dr. B asked if we were going on holidays soon. I said we wouldn’t be back until the seventh of August. Dr. B said to come in on the 8th.

Then I saw the dietician, she said she wanted to add more calories to my diet since I only put on two pounds. She said I might need it later in the month.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I spent the rest of the morning doing laundry, making the beds, tiding up the house and cleaning the bathrooms.

In the afternoon we sent Alex to bed for a nap. He was very irritable and cried at almost anything. It’s medicine time!

I made Mom a birthday cake while Alex was asleep. Alex helped me ice the cake, he was feeling a lot better, not so irritable!

For the rest of the afternoon all Alex asked me was when were Mitch, Grandma and Grandpa coming. He must of asked me about twenty times!

They arrived just before five o’clock. We had dinner before six o’clock. Mom didn’t realize we were having them for her birthday, she seemed quite surprised.

Before dinner while we were sitting in the living room, I noticed something different on the fireplace. I have two ceramic pigs that Mom and Dad gave me. There were three babies sitting beside one of the pigs. Thinking back I didn’t remember them being there but then I wasn’t sure. After dinner Mom asked me about them and then it came out that they had seen them and decided to buy them for me. Mom thought it was funny when I first noticed them. She’s pretty sneaky!

We watched a movie on tv. They left around eleven o’clock. Alex and I had our snack. We went to bed at midnight.

We didn’t do too much in the afternoon. We went down to Mom and Dad’s before five o’clock. Charlie, Alex and Mitch went to the fireworks around seven o’clock. There were other things going on before the firework display.

Kelly and I stayed at Mom and Dad’s. Kelly started to act funny around nine o’clock. I quickly gave him a pill then I had to hold onto him because he was very jumpy. Luckily the pill stopped the seizure from coming on. It must have been very close in coming.

When I left at eleven thirty I had to carry him up the stairs, Kelly was really out.

Charlie, Alex and Josh were just coming back when I left. Alex had a snack when he came home. He said he had a good time tonight.
