Diagnosis: Leukemia; August 24, 1987

I woke up at ten o’clock. I had breakfast and cleaned up the house. Charlie went to get the groceries. Alex had a shower and I got him dressed. Charlie had given Alex his breakfast.

When I told Alex he had to go to the hospital, he was really mad. He started saying things about the hospital and the nurses.

We had lunch and after lunch Alex had an upset stomach. Mom phoned and invited us for dinner.

We left for the hospital at 12:50 p.m. Just after we got there they asked Alex if he would like to go on a parade. Alex was really excited that he was going to be in a parade. We went through the third floor and then we went outside where they judged the different floats. Chemotherapy won best medical float.

We got back to the clinic at 2:45 p.m. I went to the pharmacy and they said it would be half an hour.

Alex had an I.V. push when I came back. Winnie did it and just as she was putting the needle in Alex moved. The needle went right through the vein, so Winnie had to take it out. She decided to use the vein in his foot. I didn’t really like the idea but Winnie said Alex’s veins in his hands and arms are crooked and very thin. Actually it seemed better when it was done in his foot.

We left at three thirty, we picked up the medicine from the pharmacy and went to Mom and Dad’s.

We had dinner at five o’clock. We left before eight o’clock. Alex fell asleep on the way home. I put Alex in his bed.

I read for awhile then I went to bed.
