Diagnosis: Leukemia; April 29, 1988

Alex woke me up just after eight o’clock. He was calling Pa, oh Papa, but Charlie was still asleep. He wanted help in the bathroom.

I got our breakfast and I made Charlie his coffee.

I had a shower and got dressed while Alex and Charlie watched TV. Then I gave Alex a bath and got him dressed.

I did the dishes, the laundry and tided up the house.

We went to Marla’s for lunch. Alex and Lanie argued quite a bit. Whatever one of them wanted to do the other one wanted to do something else. Then they decided they would tie me up.

We left after four o’clock. Charlie didn’t work again today so we had to get back early for dinner. I started to cook dinner when we got home. We ate dinner at five thirty.

After dinner I had a bath, I’m not feeling myself. Too many things seem to be coming at once. Alex being sick will never leave my mind. It’s something I think about every day. Then Charlie isn’t working that much. The company is holding work back because their contract hasn’t been settle yet. Today it just seemed to be too much to handle. It makes me wonder where we’re heading.

Charlie and Alex went for a walk. I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock.

I wrote in the journal and watched TV. I’ll be going to bed soon it’s after eleven o’clock now.

We didn’t go to gym class today, we went to Alain’s birthday party. It was at Chuck E. Cheese. Alex was really excited to go there.

Alex went on some of the rides before the party started. Most of the kids had pizza and the mother’s had the salad bar.

Marla and I went to the salad bar and we had to pay for our meal. I don’t think it was planned very well, we shouldn’t had to pay for our meal I don’t think.

Alex wanted to go back to Alain’s house but Coral wasn’t having people back to the house. Marla said she had to study, so I asked if Lanie could come over.

I took Lanie and Alex home. Marla said she would pick Lanie up at four thirty.

I told Alex tonight I was going to register him in some classes. I asked him what classes he wanted to go into. I told him all the classes so he could decide which ones he wanted to go into.

Alex finally decided on Mini-Sport and Dinosaur Delight.

Charlie go home around four o’clock.

I left not long after Marla took Lanie home.

When I got to the registration there wasn’t very many people there. I was the twelfth person there and Allison was number 1. I had phoned Allison in the afternoon but she had already left. She had told me she had phoned the rec centre and they said to come at three o’clock. I told her that was probably too early and that she should go at five o’clock. I guess she decided to go at three o’clock.

I talked to Allison for awhile while we waited for the registration to start.

I was able to get Alex into both classes. By the time I left Dinosaur Delight was full.

I got home after seven thirty, I had dinner that Charlie had made.

The phone woke me up at ten o’clock. Before I could answer the phone, it had gone to the answering machine. They didn’t leave a message though.

Charlie was outside washing his car. He wanted me to phone Shirley and tell her he would pick Alex up at noon. Shirley had said she was going to bring Alex back around six o’clock but Charlie didn’t like that idea.

Shirley said she would bring Alex back after lunch since Brent wanted to play some more with Alex.

I had breakfast, had a shower and got dressed. Then I tided up the house.

It did us all good being apart for almost a day, especially Alex and myself.

When Alex came home he gave me a hug and told me he had a really good time. Then after awhile his mood changed and he started to argue with me.

Alex told Charlie that he had a cut inside his mouth. He said he got it from the pencil he had been drawing with. The pencil had slipped and gone into his mouth. Shirley said she wasn’t in the room at the time so she doesn’t know what happened.

It worried me since he said the lead of the pencil had made the cut.

Brent, Monique and Shirley left around four o’clock.

Shirley came back around six o’clock to take me out for dinner.

I woke up at six o’clock. I knew I had to wake up early to go to the hospital. I was planning on getting up at eight but I couldn’t sleep.

I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast. I woke Alex up at eight o’clock. I made Alex his breakfast then I gave him a bath and got him ready to go to the hospital.

We left after nine o’clock. When we got to the hospital we had to wait awhile for Alex’s blood test.

Dr. S said Alex’s blood count was up so they would go ahead with Chemo and the LP about fifteen minutes later. They started Alex’s Lp, Dr. S asked if Alex was going to lie down or sit up. I told her we had never tried it sitting up. The doctor said we might as well try.

It was a lot easier, Alex sat down with his back to the doctor then he put his arms around my neck. It was over a lot faster. Dr. S told Alex he was really brave but Alex said he wasn’t. The Doctor kept on telling Alex he was brave but he wouldn’t believe it.

I took Alex out to the waiting area and put him in one of the beds. I told him he had to lie down for awhile which he didn’t like at all.

While he was lying down I went to the Pharmacy. They told me to come back in an hour and an half. They were going for lunch in a half hour and they couldn’t fill it before they left. I said we were almost finished and wanted to go. She said go to the cafeteria for lunch.

I bought Alex a couple of treats then I came back to the clinic.

I had a bit of a hard time getting Alex to lie down.

At one o’clock the Vincristine hadn’t come up yet. Martina phoned and they said they never got Alex’s prescription. So she sent another one down.

Sheila came into the clinic, at first Alex wouldn’t talk to her. Then he told her about Ghostbusters and Sheila said why don’t you go and slim the nurses Alex. Alex thought this was a wonderful idea. At first he wouldn’t go by himself, he wanted me to go. Sheila said she would go with him. For the rest of the time we were there Alex slimmed the nurses.

Heather couldn’t figure out what they were doing. She said what is the slimming business. One of the other kids said it’s Ghosbusters.

Alex’s medicine came up and he had his I.V. push. Martina gave it to him so it was okay.

We left around two thirty and picked up the medication at the Pharmacy. We got home after three o’clock. I phoned Marla to let her know we were back. We were suppose to go over but it was too late. I didn’t think it would take that long. I apologized for not phoning earlier but I didn’t have their phone number with me.

Mom had left a Happy Birthday message on the answering machine. She actually sang Happy birthday on the tape. I phoned her and thanked her.

Shirley came around five o’clock to take Alex for the night. Alex had complained since we got home that he couldn’t go. He said he would miss me too much and that they didn’t have a bed for him to sleep on. I told Alex he could bring our sleeping bag.

Alex was fine once he got in the car with Shirley.

We got ready to go our for dinner, we went to the Keg in Coquitlam. Then we went to see a movie which was a real treat.

Dinner was really enjoyable we took our time to eat and just enjoyed the time together. It was great to go to a movie since we hadn’t gone for a very long time.

We got home at eleven thirty. I went to bed not long after we got home.

It’s Alex’s Birthday! Happy Birthday Alex!

At 1:30 a.m. some kid was skateboarding out on the street. Kelly was barking so I knew it had to be someone outside. When I went to the window the kid left. Then as I was coming up the stairs, Alex called Mama, Mama. I thought oh no I hope Alex isn’t going to wake up now. I went into his room and he said look what the Easter Bunny left me. He was really excited, I told him to go back to sleep. Alex said okay and he was asleep in a few minutes. I went back to sleep as well.

We were awoken at six thirty from a phone call for Lin. Their friends were leaving and wanted to meet them at McDonald’s in Chilliwack. They weren’t even dressed yet, they had to really rush around.

They left not long afterwards, they gave Alex $20 for his birthday which was really nice.

We gave Beau and Tina Easter chocolates.

I could hear Alex and Tina looking for the Easter eggs. Alex said that silly Easter Bunny put an egg in Miss Mouse’s bed.

After they had left, Alex came into our room and said look at all the Easter eggs the Easter Bunny left. Then he started to look through our room. Alex said wow look the Easter Bunny left some eggs for you too!

We then had breakfast and got dressed.

I started to make Alex’s cake, it took most of the morning.

We went to Mom and Dad’s in the afternoon. Mom and Dad had a lot of presents for Alex. They gave him a Mickey Mouse bank, a musical truck, Easter chocolates, pants, shorts and a t-shirt.

We gave Alex a Fisher Price mixer and Kelly gave him a puzzle. Charlie told me I was something else. The reason I gave him something else besides his bike was I thought we would be by ourselves.

Alex had a good time opening all the presents and having his Grandparents back.

We left around nine o’clock. Alex fell asleep on the way home. I put him to bed.

I went to bed around eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; April 2, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex was playing with Tina. Charlie had given Alex hot cereal for breakfast.

Charlie and Simon went downstairs to fix the cars. Charlie had asked Simon if he could fix the brakes on both cars, Simon is a mechanic.

I made breakfast for Lin, the kids and myself. The kids said they weren’t hungry. Tina and Beau don’t eat very good, they eat a lot of junk food.

Lin was giving Beau chocolate chips cookies for breakfast. She was going to give Alex some but I told her Alex was not allowed to have any. This really seemed to surprise her. Lin said her kids didn’t eat very well so she gave them a lot of junk food.

Charlie and Simon came upstairs, Charlie asked me to make Simon breakfast. After they finished they went back downstairs to do the brakes. Lin seemed a bit annoyed as she wanted to go to Chinatown.

I asked Lin about her sister who had passed away from Cancer when she was sixteen. She said she had cancer in her throat and she went to Singapore for treatment. She stopped going for treatment and she seemed okay but the Cancer came back and shot got a lot worse. Lin said she was till at home when she passed away. Lin had been dating at the time she said she feels guilty that she didn’t spend more time with her sister.

It was good for me to know what kind of Cancer Charlie’s sister had since he didn’t know.

Simon and Charlie finished doing the cars and then they got ready to go to Chinatown. We didn’t go as it was raining so hard.

Later we met them at Shanghai for dinner. Alex really enjoyed his hot and sour soup. Their kids didn’t eat that much, Beau would only eat pork in small strips.

After dinner they went to their friends place and we came home.

Mom phoned not long after we got home. She said they had just gotten home and she wanted to have us over for dinner tomorrow for Alex’s birthday. I said I would bring the cake since Alex wanted a helicopter cake.

We watched TV and went to bed around midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; April 1, 1988

Today is Good Friday!

I woke up at ten o’clock. I’m still pretty tired, I haven’t recuperated yet.

Lin and her family had already left, they’re going to go to Seattle with their friends.

We went to the mall in the afternoon.

Alex said he was annoyed that he couldn’t play with Tina. He said he couldn’t understand why they had gone out so early.

We ate dinner at six o’clock, Alex and I played some games before he went to bed.

We watched TV for awhile. Lin and family came back around nine o’clock. They were surprised that Alex had gone to sleep so early. Lin said Tina and Beau usually go to bed around ten or eleven o’clock. They get up around six or seven in the morning. I didn’t think that was enough sleep for a child.

We went to sleep around midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 31, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. Every morning Paul seems to expect me to make breakfast I just don’t feel that I should have to make everyone breakfast. The last few mornings he got it himself but this morning he told Blair he wanted a four minute egg and toast. Then he walked away. Blair said why do I have to do it?

After breakfast they packed up all their stuff. They’re staying at Yvonne and Jaz’s until Sunday.

They left around eleven o’clock. Blair asked if we were coming up this summer I told her we might be going to Disneyland this summer.

There’s no way I could stand to go up there this summer. I’d rather stay in a motel, their hide-a-bed is the lumpiest bed I’ve ever slept on. Last summer after we came home from there my back hurt for three weeks after.

Marla was suppose to come for lunch but Paxton wasn’t feeling very good. She said she had to work on her assignment for school.

The hospital phoned the other day, they said they had over booked and they were changing our appointment to the 8th. Joan, the receptionist said is that okay. As far as I was concerned it definitely was not okay, not on my birthday. She said that was the only day. So we don’t have any choice but to go that day.

I cleaned up the house, it was pretty messy from Blair and them. I also had to clean the sheets. Lin and her family were coming down tonight.

Alex and I went to get Fish and Chips for dinner. We ate around seven o’clock.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. I wanted to make sure he was asleep by the time they arrived. They didn’t arrive until ten o’clock. They showed us the pictures Barbara had taken when she went home to Brunei. Charlie’s mother doesn’t look very good, it looks like she had a stroke.

They went to bed around eleven o’clock. Tina didn’t want to sleep with Alex. They all slept in the spare room, Beau was in the small playpen.

I went to bed around midnight.
