Diagnosis: Leukemia; August 30, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself. Dad phoned he said he wanted to come up to get his saw. I got dressed and by that time Dad had arrived. Charlie went with him, he brought his wooden horses for Dad to sue.

Alex’s friends came to the door to see if Alex could come out to play. I told them that he wasn’t ready yet but he would be out soon. I got ready to go to the hospital this afternoon I had an early lunch and got dressed to go.

Charlie phoned to tell me that he was at Mom and Dad’s and that I could take his car to the hospital. It annoyed me that he had left knowing that we had to go to the hospital. It meant that I had to do everything which also meant that I had to deal with Alex complaining because he wanted to play with his friends. I wouldn’t have minded any other day..

We left to get Charlie’s car at twelve o’clock. Mom asked what Alex was having which was too bad since I hadn’t told Alex what or where we were going. I just find it’s better if I don’t tell him as he complains a good part of the time. We had to go upstairs to the second floor as they are renovating the clinic downstairs. They sure are in tight quarters now, I couldn’t believe it. We were there at one o’clock which isn’t a busy time so I can’t imagine what it would be like or where they would put anyone. They put us in a small waiting room which had a sign saying “Quiet Zone”. I thought this will be interesting as Alex will have a hard time to keep quiet.

After awhile Heather came to weigh and measure Alex. Alex wanted me to come with him. Heather wanted to remeasure Alex as she said that he couldn’t have grown that much. I told her we had been to the doctor and that Alex had grown one inch within the last month. She said that was okay then. Another nurse took over but I didn’t see what her name was. She took Alex’s blood pressure. I asked how often it was done since Alex hadn’t had it taken within the last year. She said the last year? Her tone of voice was are you sure? I told her that it had been a very long time. She checked Alex’s chart and it hadn’t been done within the last month. She said I wonder if there is a reason for it. Then Mary came to take Alex’s blood, her room must be the worst. She’s in a closet with some of their supplies, that must be really hard.

At two o’clock Dr. S came to ask how Alex was doing. I told her that Alex was very irritable for the time he was taking the prednisone and two weeks after that. Dr. S told me that prednisone only makes them irritable for three days. So it has nothing to do with him being irritable. I told her that before prednisone was increased Alex was irritable for two weeks and now that it was increased he is irritable even more. Dr. S said well we cannot decrease the amount of prednisone he is taking. I just wanted her to know that Alex was very irritable when he is on the prednisone. I also mentioned that Alex had an allergy to the suntan lotion that he was using, and that Alex complained that his legs were bothering him. I thought it was due to jumping around too much.

Dr. S then examined Alex in the waiting area. Dr S said she had to wait for Alex’s blood count to come up before she ordered his Vincristine. She gave me Alex’s prescription. We went down to the pharmacy which the pharmacist said would take forty five minutes to fill. We walked around outside since I figured the Vincristine wouldn’t be up yet, it seems to take an hour to get up to the clinic. Alex decided to get his prize from the store in the hospital, he picked a Transformer. We went back upstairs and had to wait about half an hour before it was ready. Alex was happy because he got to watch Transformers before we left.

We went back to the pharmacy, the pharmacist said just who I wanted to talk to. She said that Dr. S had prescribed the Septra in the adult pills and he was to take ½ a pill. I told her that we had taken them before and Alex had a hard time taking them. In fact he had thrown up a couple of times with them. She phoned the doctor and was able to get them changed to the other ones.

We left the hospital at three thirty. We went to McDonalds afterwards, it was a bit early but that was okay. Afterwards we came home, Alex rode his bike outside with the other kids when we got home. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; August 29, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock, I sure feel tired. I was planning on getting up earlier but just couldn’t get out of bed. I made breakfast for Alex, then I had a shower and got dressed. Kurt came over to ask Alex to come over to play. Alex went out after he got dressed. I did the laundry, made the beds, did the dishes and some other things around the house while Alex was playing.

After lunch Alex went outside again. He played with Patrick outside for awhile then they came in to play. Patrick seems quite nice, I found out on the weekend that he had his fourth birthday on Saturday. Melanie who lives down on Lost Lake said her son was going to Patrick’s party (27th) Benjamin, he is also 4. Patrick goes everywhere which I found very hard to take at that age.

They played inside the house most of the afternoon. I told him to go home at five o’clock as we were going to have dinner soon.

After dinner we went outside to ride our bikes. I figured I might as well ride my bike with Alex and get a little exercise. The tires on my bike are flat and I couldn’t find the air pump. We took Kelly for a walk instead. Patrick came with us for the walk then we all went inside for awhile. Before eight o’clock I told Patrick to go home as I thought his mother might be looking for him.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I did my knitting and watched TV. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made Alex breakfast , I didn’t have any as I wasn’t hungry. Kurt came to the door at ten thirty but I told him Alex wasn’t ready yet and that he would be out shortly. Alex quickly got dressed and was outside in no time. I had my shower earlier so I was finishing doing my hair and getting dressed.

I made our beds and did the laundry and other things around the house while Alex was outside. The kids went to Patrick’s house which is down on Westlake, they didn’t ask Alex to come I guess they figured he would come with them. Alex was pretty upset that they didn’t stay outside with him.

In the afternoon I started to prepare some of the food for tonight’s dinner. I also did quite a number of other things around the house to make it as tidy and clean as possible. After I had finished doing the food I set up the table in the dining room. Everything was pretty well ready when Charlie came home from work. Charlie had been working overtime today. Charlie had a shower and got dressed. Not long after that Mom and Dad came over with Geordie. Mom brought a peach pie for dessert.

After dinner Alex went outside and asked Grandpa to see his sandbox. Then Alex came in to change into his swimming trunks. Alex asked Grandma and I to come out and watch him run through the sprinkler.

Mom and Dad left at eight thirty, they still looked pretty tired I hope they aren’t over doing it.

We watched TV, I cleaned up the kitchen and dining room during the commercials. The award show was on. Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven thirty.

I woke up at nine o’clock, I’m sure feeling tired today I don’t know why. I made breakfast for Alex and my self then I had a shower and got dressed.

Alex went outside to play. I tided up the house which seems to be a natural occurrence these days. It sure is hard to keep it up.

After lunch we walked down to Mom and Dad’s but we stopped at Allison’s first. She had said that they would be at the Island next weekend and that she would like to see us if we could come over. Allison, Kurt and Pearl are all sick with a combination of things. She gave me the telephone number where they would be at in Port Alberni and to phone them when we got there. Then we went down to Mom and Dad’s.

Dad wasn’t there when we got there he had been at the old house showing someone the car (Joan’s car). They both have been working on the house or I should say the backyard. They ordered top soil which came Thursday and they have finished spreading it around. They both look really tired especially Dad. It looks like they are doing it too fast and not taking their time.

It’s Mom and Dad’s Anniversary today, we gave them a card, Alex wanted to give it to them so when Dad came back Alex gave it to them.

We didn’t stay too long, as I knew that they wanted to get some plants for the garden. When we got home I did some things around the house. Alex fell asleep while watching TV.

We went out for dinner and just when we were getting ready to go Alex woke up. That was good timing! We Went to the Won Ton House on Hastings Street. We went past the PNE we were surprised that Alex didn’t say that he wanted to go in. There sure were a lot of people there, a lot of people were lined up for the ride on the water slide.

After we had dinner we went to get some Rum for tomorrows dinner. We invited Mom and Dad over for dinner tomorrow. We went to three or four Liquor stores before we found one open. Then we went to Save-On-Foods and bought a few things and rented a couple of movies.

We got home at seven thirty, Alex played outside for awhile, he came in at eight o’clock. We watched his movie then we watched ours. Charlie didn’t watch any of it, he was in the bedroom watching TV and of course falling asleep! Alex went to bed at ten o’clock and I went to bed at eleven thirty.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made Alex and myself breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

Alex went outside to ride his bike while I did some work inside the house. It sure is difficult to let Alex go outside by himself but I leave the front door unlocked so Alex can get inside if he has to.

Most of the day was spent the same. Alex seemed to really enjoy playing with the other kids.

We had dinner at five o’clock and Alex went outside again to play. I told Alex it was time to come inside which made him pretty mad but it was starting to get dark.

Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty, I had a shower and got dressed. Kurt Andrews came over at ten o’clock to play. We went out for Dim sum at twelve o’clock and sent Kurt home. We went to Sek Kee in Port Coquitlam, it’s really good which surprised us.

When we came back Alex played with the other kids in the neighbourhood. We went to get Alex’s hair cut at two o’clock. I finally convinced Alex that he should get his hair cut. It’s getting quite long at the back and very hard to manage. It was pretty quiet at Toppy’s when we got there so Galena took us right away. Galena told us that she had a hard time cutting Robert’s hair the other day. She said she only got half way and Robert wouldn’t let her cut his hair any more. Galena was really surprised at how still Alex was when she was cutting his hair. She said she might as well take her time since he was so good.

After Alex had gotten his hair cut we went to McDonald’s for dinner. We came home at six o’clock and Alex rode his bike until eight o’clock. He played with the other kids while he was outside.

Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself then I had a shower and got dressed. I went to the mall by myself, Alex isn’t very good in the mall so there isn’t much point in taking him to the mall. It was quite nice just to have a break away from it all. When I got back Charlie and Alex had gone out. I had my lunch in peace and quiet what a nice change!

After lunch I did some work around the house. I let Alex ride his bike outside while I worked inside. I feel he is old enough that I can trust him to be on his own. It seems that most kids are a lot younger when they go out on their own. They also seem to be able to go anywhere they want to go. Which I still find really hard to do. I let Alex go outside but I want him to stay close to the house and at least to stay on his own block.

We ate dinner at six o’clock and after dinner Alex fell asleep after dinner. Shirley and Brent came over at six thirty then we went to Dairy Queen for ice cream. Alex wasn’t too happy about being woken up, but once we got to Dairy Queen he was okay. We went to Lions Park afterwards. Alex and Brent seemed to have a lot of fun running around. They sure were dirty when we left. We got home around eight o’clock and Alex didn’t go to bed until ten o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty to hear Alex in the bathroom. Then he went into the spare room, I figured I had better tell him to be quiet as Charlie was still sleeping. Charlie had worked overtime last night so he didn’t get home until two o’clock in the morning, so I bet he’s tired!

I made Alex his breakfast and started to make our dessert for today’s lunch. After I had finished doing that I did the dishes, cleaned the bathroom and had a shower. I got dressed and started to make lunch.

Allison and the kids arrived at noon, Allison sure looks tired. It must be hard packing and looking after two children under the age of three. She said she isn’t feeling very good and that she might be coming down with something. That sure makes it even more difficult. They have so much to do considering they’re moving out on the 27th.

They didn’t stay very long as Kurt wasn’t feeling very good, it looks like he has a bit of a cold. He seemed to cry very easily. Alex pushed him and chased him a few times which didn’t help much. Allison said she was going to put both kids to bed and lay down herself, good idea!

Not long after they left, Mom Dad and Karen arrived. They had just been walking in Moody Park. Mom said they were going to Gibsons tomorrow to take Karen back, she said that Karen was getting bored. They went home about the same time as Charlie left for work.

Alex watched his tape as usual while I typed in the journal. It’s pretty hot to be typing but I would really like to get caught up in the journal.

I started to cook dinner and we ate at five thirty. After I did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen I went outside to water the plants. Alex came out after I was finished and rode his bike for awhile. Allison was going out to get dinner and she stopped to tell me that they had sold the car and they got almost what they had asked for. That sure was quick, it was less than a week since the ad.

We came in after seven o’clock and I got Alex ready for bed shortly afterwards. He seems to require more sleep the last few months. He must get between twelve and fourteen hours of sleep every day. I wonder if it is because he has had his medication increased.

I watched TV for awhile then typed in the journal and guess what? I’m actually caught up I don’t believe it! It’s now before ten o’clock, I’ll probably go watch TV and then go to bed.

Allison phoned at twelve thirty to see if we could get together for lunch tomorrow as she is having company from Wednesday on. I told her that would be okay. She apologized for giving such short notice but I told her it was okay as I had figured it would have to be tomorrow.

After lunch I vacuumed the house and typed in the journal until it was time to cook dinner. We ate at five o’clock, then we exercised downstairs. I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock, he watched Ghostbusters before he went to bed.

I woke up at nine thirty, I’m still tired, I feel like I didn’t sleep at all. I made pancakes for breakfast. I gave Alex three and he complained that he had too many and he wouldn’t be able to eat all of it. I told him just to eat whatever he could.

After breakfast I did the dishes, did three loads of laundry and tided up the house. Charlie went grocery shopping while I was doing all that. I then had a shower and got dressed.

In the afternoon I did some more stuff around the house, then I got ready to go to Mom and Dad’s. At two o’clock I went to Pharmasave to buy Dad a card and wrapping paper for his present. Mom phoned at four o’clock to tell us that Jeff, Martina and the kids were there and that we could come any time. We left shortly afterwards.

When we got there Dad, Jeff, Martina and Orion were playing a game of pool. I stayed upstairs and helped Mom with the dinner. After dinner Martina went downstairs and played pool with Jada, Orion, and Jada’s friend. We didn’t see too much of them most of the evening as they were playing pool.

Alex was pretty hard to handle. He was running all over the house either chasing Karen or she was chasing him. Alex wouldn’t listen to me when I told him to stop running around. Alex was being quite rude and I had to give him a slap which he said DIDN’T HURT! Alex was very naughty indeed.

We left at nine o’clock, Alex wanted to stay longer but I had enough of him running all over the place and not listening to me. I got Alex ready for bed at ten o’clock. I went to bed shortly afterwards.

I woke up at seven thirty, we’re taking Alex and Karen to the PNE parade this morning. I had a shower and got dressed, then I had my breakfast. Alex woke up at eight o’clock but he said he didn’t want anything to eat. We left to pick Karen up at eight thirty.

We got downtown after nine o’clock and sat at the beginning of the parade route. Most of the spots on the route had already filled up by the time we got there. Alex seemed to enjoy the parade even though he kept on getting up all the time.

We told Mom that we would be late coming back as we had decided to go to the PNE after the parade. We got to the PNE after twelve o’clock, we parked in the back lot, which was already starting to fill up.

The first thing that Alex wanted to do was to go on the rides. Charlie got Alex an all day pass but he didn’t get anything for Karen. I told him to get her a pass but Charlie got Karen tickets to go on the rides. In the end I think it cost us more than by getting a pass. We went to some of the buildings after the kids had been on the rides for awhile. Alex wasn’t very nice when we were going through the China buildings, he fell on the floor and said that he couldn’t walk. We didn’t stay there very long, we then went to see some of the animals. We ended up in the petting zoo which Alex and Karen seemed to enjoy. After that we went to the kids world where Alex had his face painted. We had to stand in the line for about half an hour and then Alex said that his face hurt and I had to take him to the washroom and take the paint off his face. Charlie wanted to see the truck show so we went to get a seat. Charlie and Karen walked over to the games while Alex and I stayed at our seats. Alex said that the trucks were too noisy when they were moving them into position. When Charlie and Karen came back, I told Charlie that Alex didn’t want to watch the show. Karen, Alex and I went to the rides while Charlie watched the show. Charlie met us back at the rides, then we went to get something to eat. By this time it was eight o’clock. After we had something to eat we went through the Show Home and bought the tickets to win the house or the car. We left at nine o’clock and dropped Karen off at Mom and Dad’s before ten o’clock. We came home and I got ready to go to bed and also got Alex ready for bed. Alex said he wasn’t tired and that he hadn’t had a chance to play yet. I was really tired from all the walking around we had done today.

Alex asked if someone could come over and I told him we were going somewhere for lunch. I tided up the house and did the dishes before we left for Allison’s. Alex and Kurt didn’t play very well together, they didn’t want to play together after they had waited all morning to see each other.

Allison said that they had rented the house out for September 1st and they would be moving out on the 27th. They sure will be busy packing up. Allison said they haven’t had time to pack yet. I told her that if she would like I could take Kurt any time next week.

We left around four o’clock, Alex wasn’t being very nice at all. I asked Allison if they would have time to come over next week for lunch and she said she would phone me and let me know.

I took Alex to McDonald’s for dinner, even though he doesn’t deserve it. I wanted to get the last glass for the McDonald collection. We went to the mall afterwards and as usual Alex wanted to buy a toy. I have a lot of trouble saying n0. I remember when I was a kid how much I would of loved to have a new toy, which I didn’t get very often.

I went to London Drugs to buy myself shampoo then I went to Toy City to buy Kurt and Pearl a present. I bought Kurt a view master and Pearl a shape sorter. Pearl’s was the hardest one to buy, most baby toys seem to be so expensive. Then I went to the mall to pay the telephone bill and to buy wrapping paper and cards for the kids. I got home at noon but Charlie and Alex were out. It sure was nice to have my lunch in peace and quiet for a change!

Alex was quite nice to me for a change, I think I should do this more often, maybe he would appreciate me more.

In the afternoon while Alex was watching his tape on TV I vacuumed the house.

I decided to move Alex’s Mercaptopurine pill from night time to morning time. I’m going to do it gradually to make sure he doesn’t get sick. I’m hoping that if he takes it in the morning it will help him so he doesn’t have an accident at night.

We ate dinner at five o’clock. At six o’clock I turned off Alex’s tape so I could tape the news for Charlie. Alex was really mad that I had done this. Alex said to me to put his Ghostbusters tape on right now! I told Alex if he was going to talk to me like that he could go to his room. Alex screamed and yelled and went into his room. I went to check on him and he was fast asleep. I changed his clothes.

I woke up before eight o’clock. I made breakfast for myself and Alex then I cleaned the bathrooms and the floors. I also cleaned some of the dirt spots on the carpet through out the house. After I finished doing this I had a shower and got dressed.

Alex had been watching his tape on TV while I was working. I told Alex it was time for him to have a shower. Alex was really mad about that, he said he wanted to watch some more of his tape. While I was getting him dressed after his shower, I noticed a rash on his back and a lot worse than it was when we had gone to the hospital. Dr. S had said it was a heat rash, but it hasn’t been that sunny lately so it must be something else. I made an appointment to see Dr. C for later this afternoon.

We went to see the doctor after lunch, actually we went shopping first. I wanted to buy something for Kurt and Pearl’s birthday, their birthdays aren’t until September and November but I want to give it to Allison before they leave.

We got to the doctors office early but we didn’t have to wait in the waiting room but we had to wait in the examining room. Dr. C said Alex’s rash was either from soap or from sun tan lotion. I told her we were using a new lotion and she said that was probably it and we should go back to the old one. I also told her that Alex wasn’t toilet trained at night yet and that I was concerned as to what was the problem. Dr. C said first of all she would do a urine test to make sure everything was okay. I asked the doctor if could be because of all the medication Alex was on and she said that could be the problem. Dr. C said she would phone me if their was a problem. Then she weighed and measured Alex, Dr. C was quite surprised that Alex had grown an inch in a month.

We then went to the lab where they gave us a small bottle for Alex to put his urine in. Alex was really good he didn’t complain at all.

Then we went home to have dinner, Alex wanted to eat out but we had been out for lunch yesterday. After dinner we went downstairs to exercise, Alex listened to the Ghostbusters record while I was on the exercise bike.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and typed in the journal, I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Alex and Karen watched TV for awhile then it was time for us to go out. We took them to McDonald’s for lunch. I thought Karen would like to go since they don’t have one up in Gibsons. After McDonald’s we went to Woodward’s, it’s $1.49 day today. Then we went to Save-On-Foods to buy bread and while we were there we got Alex a pair of jeans. Charlie told the kids they could both rent a movie.

When we got home Alex and Karen played with the Playmobile that they had gotten on $1.49 day.

Mom phoned after three o’clock and said that their company had left and would we like to come for dinner when we brought Karen back.

We went down after four o’clock. After dinner we let the kids watch the movies that they had rented. We didn’t stay too long, we had a long day and Alex was getting tired.

After lunch I vacuumed the house, Mom said that Joan and the kids were coming down as Mom had invited Karen to stay with them for awhile. I figured since they were going to Mom and Dad’s they would at least stop by and see us. I had cleaned up the house in case they did come by but I also sort of felt that they wouldn’t show up.

We had dinner at six o’clock. Mom phoned at seven o’clock to tell me that Joan was sorry but they just didn’t have enough time to come and see us. I didn’t say anything to Mom because it would only upset her but I was really annoyed with Joan’s excuse. We only live five minutes away from Mom and Dad’s. I just feel with all we have been through in the last while Joan could have stopped by. I feel what they did was very rude and if I had done that I would have never heard the end of it by everyone.

Alex and I went downstairs to exercise, Alex rode his bike and tried to talk to me while I was on the exercise bike which makes it very difficult to exercise while I’m listening to music!

I woke up at seven thirty. Alex had said that he wanted to go on a picnic with us, Grandma and Grandpa. I told Mom after I had invited them that we would decide today what time if the weather was okay.

When I got up it was pretty cloudy but we decided to go anyways. I had a shower and got dressed. Then we started to pack up. I had made chicken last night and we are also bringing potato chips, ginger ale and buns. Mom said she would bring dessert. Mom said they would follow us to the beach. She said that Dad had made coffee and they were bringing it so Charlie figured there wasn’t any point in bringing his. After we had left Charlie stopped to ask them if they had. They hadn’t because they said I had told them not to! We went back to the house while they stayed there then they followed us again.

We got to White Pine Beach and there were quite a few people there considering how cloudy it was. We had our lunch right away. After lunch Charlie and Alex went into the waster with the rubber boat that Charlie had bought yesterday. Alex really enjoyed being in the boat. Alex also played in the sand and made sandcastles with Charlie. Alex made some more of his cakes like he did last time he was at the beach.

Dad and Alex took a walk along the beach. Alex seemed to enjoy his day at the beach. We left at two o’clock. Mom and Dad came back to our house as we had put the boat in the back of their station wagon. They took some more stuff since they were here.

We relaxed the rest of the afternoon. I did some work around the house later on. Alex and Charlie had dinner after five o’clock. I didn’t have anything until later, I wasn’t too hungry from the picnic. Later that night we watched TV and Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched TV, did my knitting and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up after nine o’clock. Alex and Charlie were already up and Charlie had given Alex his breakfast. I had my breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I tided up the house, made Alex’s bed and put away his toys. Then we went out, we went to Queen Elizabeth park, Stanley park and then to Oakridge mall before we went out for dinner.

Alex sure wasn’t very good at the mall. He decided that he was going to buy something. I told him that he didn’t have any money and that he had gotten something yesterday so he didn’t need anything today. Alex got really mad and yelled at me that he had to buy something today. I didn’t buy him anything but Charlie did. I don’t like to buy Alex anything when he is so demanding.

We went to Shanghai for dinner then we came home. When we got home we watched TV. I got Alex ready for bed at nine o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight o’clock. We had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. Marla had given Alex a Ghostbusters sweater that her mother’s friend had made. Alex has wanted to wear it all week and as usual he wants to wear it today. I told him it was too hot and that he’ll have to wear a t-shirt today. Alex was pretty mad that he couldn’t wear his Ghostbusters sweater. I’ve seen ghost buster t-shirts at Sears so I think I’ll have to get him one.

After lunch Alex fell asleep on the couch. I put him into his bed. I sat down and actually relaxed for a change!

Alex didn’t wake up until four o’clock. We left at five o’clock to go to McDonald’s for dinner then we went to Sears to see if they had a Ghostbusters shirt. Last time we were there they had Ghostbusters shirts on a rack but they didn’t have them there this time. Alex was really disappointed but I told him we should look around some more maybe they were somewhere else. Then Alex saw one way up on the wall close to the ceiling. I thought that was pretty good for a little kid. We picked out a t shirt then we told the clerk we wanted a Ghostbusters iron on. The clerk gave Alex the paper after he had finished ironing on the Ghostbusters logo! Alex was really happy now that he had a Ghostbusters t-shirt and the paper with the Ghostbusters logo on it.

We walked around for a while then we came home. Alex wasn’t tired since he had such a long nap. We watched TV and went to bed at eleven thirty.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; August 11, 1988

I woke up at seven thirty, Alex said he wanted to have breakfast. I gave him his breakfast and I figured I might as well stay up. There isn’t much point in going back to sleep now even though I would like to.

Charlie got up around nine o’clock and we decided to go to the beach for lunch. Charlie first went to the bank and came back. We left at eleven o’clock, there weren’t very many people there yet. It wasn’t all that warm today.

We had a good time helping Alex build sand castles, Alex also made all sorts of cakes. He said he had chocolate cake and vanilla cake. We left at one o’clock much to Alex’s disgust but Charlie had to go to work today.

Charlie wasn’t too thrilled about going! Alex and I watched TV in the afternoon. We ate dinner at five o’clock.

At seven o’clock Kurt Andrews came to the door. He asked Alex if he could come out to play. Alex asked me and I told him he could go outside. Alex then told Kurt he could and Kurt said don’t forget to bring your remote control car. I thought to myself Kurt wants to play more with the car then he does with Alex. We went outside with the car. Kurt seemed to fight over using the car. Patrick from up the street came over as well at first he played with Alex quite a bit but he wanted to use the car as well. Patrick and Kurt fought over using the car. Alex didn’t want to use it at all he just wanted to ride his bike. Patrick got tired of waiting for the car so he left. Then I told Kurt it was time to put the car in the house. Kurt said where did Patrick go and I told him that he had left. Kurt said that he was going to go find him. I thought how rude that was of him to use the car all that time and he didn’t want to play with Alex. Nora had heard him say he was going and she told him to stay around here much to his disgust!

I told Alex it was time to go inside, Alex didn’t seemed too interested that he hadn’t played with Kurt. I was glad because I was afraid he was going to be upset.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I forgot to mention that today we went to the library and we saw Maggie there. We had just got there and returned our books when I heard someone call my name. I turned around and saw someone coming towards me but I didn’t recognize her until she got closer. I thought to myself oh no now she’ll want to keep in touch which is exactly what she said! For some reason she wants to be close and as far as I’m concerned we having nothing in common. The last time when we got together at her place when she was still living with Rodney I felt she had gotten pretty weird. They had nude pictures of her all over the house. I mean they even had them in the dining room, could you imagine eating and looking at a nude picture of your hostess!

Maggie and I went to school together, but that was a long time ago and we have changed greatly. She was always pretty wild and I don’t think time has changed her in that aspect. She probably has gotten worse.

She asked me for my phone number and address so we could keep in touch and she then gave me her phone number and address.

Anyways that was it for today.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast, had a shower and tided up the house. Allison and the kids are coming over for lunch.

Alex was pretty excited to see them, he told them what his Pa brought back for him. Then he and Kurt went to play with the Ghostbusters toys.

Allison told Charlie she was sorry to hear about his mother. After we had gotten everyone ready for lunch, Allison told us that they were going to California for sure now. She said that the company wants them there at the beginning of September. The company also wants Davis to go to Toronto on August 29 for one week. This means that Allison will have to do most of the last minute things, like getting the stuff into storage. I didn’t think that would be too good but I guess they don’t have too much choice.

Alex and Kurt didn’t play that well together Kurt wanted to stay with Allison. They had been playing in the sandbox but Alex wanted Kurt to do something a certain way which Kurt didn’t like.

They left around three o’clock. I felt exhausted from everything, this week has been really tiring.

We ate dinner at six o’clock, after dinner we went outside. Alex played with his remote control car that Charlie had bought him. A lot of the kids in the neighbourhood came to watch. Kurt Andrews asked if he could use the control and Alex told him okay. I went inside to do the dishes and tidy up the house.

They came in at eight o’clock. I got Alex ready for bed at eight thirty. I watched TV and went to bed at ten o’clock.

We woke up at nine thirty to hear the phone ringing. It was a friend of Mom’s, she had been trying to get a hold of her but their was no answer. She wanted me to tell mom that she had been trying to get her and she gave me her phone number.

I made breakfast then I went and had a shower and got dressed. After lunch we went to Oakride to get Charlie’s glasses repaired. Charlie had a shower and left his glasses in the bathroom. When he finished he went to put his glasses on and the one lense had shattered.

We thought we might have trouble getting it replaced but the clerk said it was something that happened maybe one in a hundred.

We walked around the mall while we were waiting. Alex said he wanted to buy something. I told him to go ask Charlie’s I didn’t have any money. Charlie bought him another Ghostbusters figure with the money that Grandpa gave Alex.

We got home around three thirty, I started to cook dinner shortly afterwards and we ate at five o’clock.

Alex has been playing with his Ghostbusters stuff for the last few days. He puts Marshmallow man on the string and reels him up on the helicopter.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at ten o’clock, I’m pretty tired.

I woke up at seven thirty. I had a shower and got dressed. By that time Alex had woken up. Alex had a fruit cup for breakfast, which usually means he’s not feeling too good. We got ready to go to the airport. We left at nine thirty, I had phoned the airport before we left and they said that the flight was late about forty five minutes.

Almost as soon as we got in the car Alex complained that his throat hurt so I gave him a candy to suck on. About ten minutes before we got to the airport Alex really started to complain. I asked Alex if he wanted me to stop the car and he said yea. I stopped the car and before I could get the blanket on him Alex had thrown up. He even got it on me! Unfortunately I didn’t bring Alex any spare clothing so I had to just wipe it off him.

We finally got to the airport but they didn’t list Charlie’s flight so I didn’t know if it was coming in or not. We went upstairs two times to find out but they don’t give out arrival times.

Alex wasn’t too cooperative, all he wanted to do was play video games or get something to eat. Alex played two video games, one was a police chase and the other one was Ghostbusters. After we had gone up for the second time and come back down we saw Charlie waiting there. He must have really wondered what had happened to us.

Charlie gave Alex Marshmallow man and Bug Eye Ghost. Alex was really excited to get them. Before we could leave Alex had to order something to eat!

Alex was pretty shy towards Charlie at first but after he got his presents he was fine. We got home at one o’clock.

We had lunch when we got home, Charlie fell asleep on the couch. He said he didn’t sleep very well on the plane. He said he actually felt sick. Alex and I went out to the bank and went to the bakery to get a loaf of bread and came home. Charlie said he didn’t even know we had gone out.

We had dinner at five o’clock. Charlie said he didn’t want anything but he ended up, eating what was left!

Mom had asked us to drop by. I told Charlie we could go tomorrow but he said we could go today. Mom and Dad both told him how sorry they were about his mother. After Dad and Charlie had gone to the kitchen Mom told me that she thought Charlie looked very tired and that he was going to cry. She said she didn’t like to ask him too much for fear that he would.

We didn’t stay very long, we came home at eight o’clock. I got Alex ready for bed and did a few things around the house and went to bed myself.

Diagnoss: Leukemia; August 7, 1988

I had a shower as soon as I got up which was eight thirty. Before I had a chance to get dressed or even dry my hair, Shirley came to the door. I told her to make her self at home while I finished getting ready.

I made us tea and toast for breakfast. I guess Shirley hadn’t had time for breakfast yet. At ten o’clock we got ready to go and pick Brent up at the Church. Brent wasn’t back from his trip to the senior’s home, so Shirley showed me around the Church. She seemed to be very proud of it although she doesn’t go there that much any more.

We went to McDonald’s for lunch and then the boys went into the playroom for awhile. We decided to take the boys to a movie. Brent wants to see Pee Wee’s Big Top Circus. Unfortunately Brent and Alex had a fight in the car and Alex told Brent that he didn’t want to be his friend anymore. Alex said he didn’t want to go see the same move as Brent. We went to see Bambi which was rather funny since I had tried to get Alex to go before and he said he didn’t want to go.

Our movie started half an hour before their movie so it ended about forty minutes before theirs. We walked around for awhile and I bought Alex an ice cream cone, then we waited in the car for them.

Mom had asked us to drop by so Shirley could see the house. We didn’t stay very long as Shirley had to take Brent back to the Church for the Children’s Festival.

After they left we stayed at Mom and Dad’s for dinner. Mom had asked Shirley and Brent to stay but as I said they had to leave for the Church.

We didn’t stay very long at Mom and Dad’s, we left around eight o’clock. Alex was pretty tired from his busy day.

I put Alex to bed and then I washed Charlie’s car. I had planned to do it before but I hadn’t gotten around to it. People probably thought I was really weird for washing it so late but I didn’t really care. After I washed it I vacuumed the inside so it was nice and clean for when Charlie comes home tomorrow.

It really bothers me that he didn’t phone since last Monday. I sure hope everything is alright.

I finished tidying up the house then I went to bed.

Alex woke up at eight o’clock. He said he wanted to have breakfast. I made us our breakfast and put Ghostbusters on. I don’t know what it is but every weekend Alex always seems to wake up earlier than he does on the week days.

I had a shower and got dressed. I went outside to cut the grass. Alex stayed inside the house and watched TV, he didn’t want to come outside. I feel I can really trust him to be on his own for a short period of time when I’m outside.

After lunch I vacuumed the house. Dad came to get some more stuff. I told them they could borrow the ladder, so Dad took it in the van.

Alex and I went out at three o’clock. We went to the video store to return the movies, then to the bank, we went to Boston pizza for dinner. They were quite nice at the restaurant, they got Alex crayons and paper. It seemed like they couldn’t do enough for us. I know I’ve gone there with Alex before and they have treated us very different from other people there because we weren’t with a man!

After we had dinner we went to Save-On-Foods to buy our groceries for the week. Then we went to the video store to get another couple of movies for tonight.

When we got home Mom phoned, I told her that I had rented a movie and that they could come up and watched it. Mom asked us to come down instead. I said we would be over in a little while.

Allison had left a message on the answering machine, so I called her back. She wanted to borrow the food gun to try to make spritz cookies. I told her sure and that I wasn’t planning on using it for quite awhile! Allison said she would be over in a little while. When they came over Allison asked if they could come in for awhile. I said sure I was just putting away the groceries.

Alex and Kurt played for awhile but Alex kept on scaring Kurt, so he kept on running to get on Allison’s lap. Allison said that Davis’ office phoned while they were on holidays and asked him if he would be willing to go to California for ten months to a year. Davis said that he would be willing to go, his boss said they would talk move about it and finalize it when he got back to work. That was quite the news, I’ll miss not having them around. It’s really fun having lunch together once a week even when the kids are screaming and running around!

After they left we went down to Mom and Dad’s and watched the movie. Alex fell asleep at ten o’clock on the couch. We came home at eleven thirty, I put Alex into his bed and got ready to go to bed myself.

Alex was pretty bored after awhile, he did help pile up the newspaper which was a help. We had brought Kelly with us so we took him home before we went out. I had promised Alex that we would go to McDonald’s for dinner.

After we went to McDonalds we went to the video store, we each rented a movie. Alex watched his movie when we got home. In fact he watched it quite a number of times before he went to bed. I had forgotten to give Alex his medicine this afternoon, so I had to give him the rest of the medicine at nine o’clock. I had to keep Alex up until he had his medicine. Alex went to bed at nine o’clock.

I watched the movie that I rented, it was called Nuts. It was a comedy drama, it was really good. I went to bed at midnight.

Alex woke up at seven thirty, he said he was hungry and wanted his breakfast. I got up and made him and myself breakfast. Alex is very irritable this morning, he’s unbearable to be around. It’s hard since I’m the only one and he couldn’t stand not to have me around. It’s nice to know your wanted but everyone needs their time away.

At nine o’clock I told Alex to go to his room, he had quite a few temper tantrums and he was just so irritable that I figure it would be better if he did rest for awhile. Alex was really mad to think he had to go to bed, he said he didn’t have a chance to play. He was in bed for about half an hour. He had screamed for about fifteen minutes before he was quiet. He was quiet after that so I thought he was asleep but he was still awake. Alex said he was sorry for screaming and could he please come of out of his room. I told Alex he could come out and that we had to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s new house to let in the delivery man. Alex wasn’t too happy about that but I told him to get some toys to take there.

We got there at eleven o’clock, the telephone man had left a message that he had called about installing a jack for the alarm. I phoned to let Mom know and she asked me to phone them she didn’t know anything about it. When I phoned they said that Steve of the alarm company had placed the order. She said they would send out an installer as soon as possible.

The delivery man came at one o’clock with the stove and fridge. Mom phoned at one thirty to say they would be leaving. She asked if the alarm man had come yet but I told her he wasn’t there yet. Mom said he was suppose to be there at twelve o’clock.

Alex and I cleaned out the fridge while we were waiting for everyone to come. The security man came at one forty five. Mom and Dad came at two thirty. Mom made us lunch, Alex and I were starving by this time!

Before Mom and Dad came Alex had a temper tantrum when the security man was here. Alex wanted to listen to a tape that was in the tape deck that we had brought over. I told Alex to turn it down and showed him which button to move. Alex got mad and said he couldn’t do it and started to scream. I thought for sure they guy would come to see what was going on but he didn’t! I told Alex to stop screaming that if he didn’t know how to do something he should just tell me instead of screaming.

After lunch Alex and I went home to give Alex his medicine, we came back with a load for Mom and Dad. By this time the movers had come. We left at five thirty and the movers were still there.

I phoned Mom later to see if they wanted me to bring some fried Chicken down for them. I thought they probably wouldn’t want to do any cooking. Mom said that would be good, she said she hadn’t started to cook dinner yet. I told Mom I would be down when I finished cooking.

Alex and I had diner at home then we went to Mom and Dad’s with their dinner. We didn’t stay very long as Alex wanted to go home.

Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty, I got dressed and cleaned the bathrooms. Alex woke up about ten minutes after I had started. I got his breakfast and he watched TV. About half an hour later Shirley phoned to see if we could get together on Sunday. Then a little while later Marla called to see how we were doing. I was beginning to wonder if I would get the bathroom cleaned! I finally finished, had a shower and got dressed.

I started to make lunch, I invited Mom and Dad over for lunch. They arrived at noon, lunch wasn’t ready yet so Dad took a load down to the house.

After lunch I helped them take the boxes from the basement down to their house. Three of the trips I brought two bottles of coke, ice cubes and popsicles. We stopped at five o’clock. I think Mom and Dad were getting pretty tired, it’s pretty exhausting work. The security people were there and they kept on closing the windows and doors to test the alarm. So it was pretty hot in the house!

We came back to our house, I gave them something to drink and cheese and crackers. I was going to see about dinner but Mom said they were going to have dinner later, she wasn’t that hungry. They left before six o’clock.

Alex wasn’t feeling that well, he said he didn’t want anything to eat right now. We sat and watched his tape on TV. I think he was just tired from all the medicine but he couldn’t go to bed yet as he still had to have prednisone. I gave Alex his dinner at seven thirty, I got him ready for bed at eight o’clock. After Alex was asleep I went outside and watered the plants. Then I watched a bit of tv and typed in the journal. It’s close to eleven o’clock, time for me to go to bed.

I woke up at eight thirty. I sure didn’t sleep too good last night I kept on thinking about Charlie’s mother.

I had my breakfast then Alex woke up and I made his breakfast. I had a shower and got dressed, Alex was watching TV

Mom and Dad came at eleven o‘clock, they had been at the house and unpacked some kitchen stuff. I didn‘t tell them about Charlie‘s mother, I just wasn‘t up to talking about it just yet. They asked me if I would turn the hose off. I told them I was going to the hospital this afternoon and I would turn it off when I went.

I had lunch, Alex didn‘t want anything, he said he wanted to eat at the cafeteria. I got Alex to have a shower and then we both got ready to go to the hospital.

When we got to the hospital there was no one else in the waiting room. I told the nurse when she was asking the routine questions that Alex was upset because Charlie had to go home. All Margaret said was that it was normal. Even when I told the doctor this, she didn’t even inquire as to what could be bothering Alex. I asked Dr. S about sun tan creams but she said she didn’t know anything about it. She said everyone should wear sun tan lotion and it should be applied half an hour before going out into the sun. It should be reapplied two hours later. Dr. S also said people shouldn’t go out into the sun between ten a.m. and 3:30 p.m. she said that Alex should be using the strongest degree. I told her that I had heard after 15 it didn’t make any difference. She said she didn’t know. Dr. S said she was going to increase Alex’s Methotrexiate to 6 pills weekly. She then told us she would order his chemo and to wait in the waiting room.

Alex and I went to the pharmacy, which they told us there would be a forty five minute wait. We went back to the clinic and it wasn’t long before Alex had his medicine. Margaret was giving Alex his chemo, she said she replaced Martina who had gone somewhere else. She then told us that the clinic was moving upstairs. I said I’m glad I found out or we would have come and there would have been no one here. Alex was really good he held quite still even though at first he didn’t want Margaret to look at his arm.

Evelyn and Joan told us that the clinic was to be moved to the second floor, they said when you get off the elevator you turn left then right and go through the blue doors.

We went to the pharmacy to get Alex’s pills after we finished at the clinic. The pills still weren’t ready, she said another fifteen minutes. We walked around for awhile then they were finally ready.

We went to the mall to get Alex’s prize for being so good, Alex wanted Siren, he’s a transformer. We got home at four thirty, Mom had phoned but I waited until after we had dinner to phone. I told Mom about Charlie’s mother she was pretty shocked. I was afraid she would cry but she didn’t.

After dinner Alex played with his transformer. I got him ready for bed at eight o’clock. Alex didn’t want to go to bed but it’s better for him to get more rest the first week after he has gone to the hospital. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty had a shower and got dressed. Alex woke up shortly afterwards, I told him he should have a shower or a bath. Alex said he was too hungry and that he would just fall down. Then Alex went into his WOO dance and fell on the floor. Alex finally got into the shower and I got him dried and dressed. I made Alex his breakfast and got changed to cut the grass.

Before I could start, Mom and Dad arrived. They had brought the van as well as their car. They want to leave the van here so they don’t have to bring it over when they move. They then went down to their house to do some stuff and to put a few things in.

I cut the grass, it sure was strange for me, I hadn’t cut any grass since I was a teenager! Mom and Dad came back in the middle of me cutting the grass. Dad said he would do it but I wouldn’t think of letting him do it. They left and said they might be back but not to wait for them.

I finished cutting the grass in the front and we went to the backyard. Alex played in his sandbox while I cut the backyard. The front yard is easy in comparison to the backyard it’s really back breaking with all the trees and the slope. We came in when I finished and had lunch.

We went to the mall after lunch, I had seen on the billboard that they had the scream machine. When we got there it was the scream dream, it was a ride you could go one and it looks like a sky train car. Alex wanted to go on it but I didn’t think it was a very good idea in case Alex didn’t like the ride. I figured we wouldn’t be able to get off, since you can’t see in.

We got Dad his birthday present and Alex got Dinosaur flashcards. We were on our way home and I thought I would go by Mom and Dad’s new house to see if they were there and they were! Alex had a great time checking out the house. We all came back to our house, I invited them in for a drink. Mom looked to be pretty hot. They stayed until four o’clock and left.

Alex and I went to Mom and Dad’s new house to move the sprinkler for them. Then we came home and I started to cook dinner, I also made us an apple pie for dessert.

Charlie phoned at five o’clock, Alex talked to him first and Alex was nice to him this time. I talked to Charlie and he said he had bad news. He said that his mother passed away eight hours ago. I told him how sorry I was and then asked him what had happened. He said at midnight Ma broke out in a sweat and then she started to foam at the mouth. Pa wanted to take her to emergency so Charlie and the other brother as well as Pa took Ma to the hospital. He said they came home and half an hour later they were told that she had passed away. I was so shocked I knew that she was sick but I didn’t realize she was that bad. I felt so bad for Charlie it’s terrible to loose someone and even harder when it’s your parents. It seemed hard for Charlie to talk so he said that’s all for now and hung up.

After I got off the phone I explained to Alex that Grandma had died. Alex said what? I said it again and he asked home come. I told Alex that Grandma had been very sick this past year and he seemed to accept that and he didn’t ask anymore about it.

I finished cooking dinner, we ate at six o’clock. Alex could hardly wait to have dessert. After dinner we went back to Mom and Dad’s and turned off the water and put the hose by the front door.

When we got home we took Kelly for a walk, Alex wanted to go in the stroller as he said he couldn’t walk. We watered the grass when we got home, Alex played in the sandbox for a little while and came in. He looks pretty tired. We watched TV and then I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. I tided up the house and did the dishes and the laundry. By that time it was nine o’clock, I typed in the journal and it is now eleven o’clock. I’m going to go to bed now, good night.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 31, 1988

Alex woke me up at six o’clock and told me he had an accident in the bed. He had come into bed with me during the night. I told Alex he could get changed and go and sleep in his own bed. Alex said he wanted to have a bath and then get dressed. I gave Alex a bath and got him dressed then I put the TV on for him to watch cartoons. I told Alex that I was so tired that I had to go back to bed.

Alex kept on coming into my room so many times that I really didn’t get much sleep anyways. Alex wanted me to get him breakfast but I told him we were going to go to McDonald’s for breakfast, I had a shower, got dressed, did my hair and changed the sheets on my bed and put them in the wash. Meanwhile Mom phoned to see if I wanted to come over for dinner with Alex. I said it would be nice to get out for a change.

Alex and I left for McDonald’s at ten thirty. On the way there Alex said that he was going to be sick. I think it was because he was too hungry. I told Alex to chew some gum until we got there that it would help. Alex was okay and didn’t throw up on the way there.

Alex wanted a McDonald glass, they are only $.79 I figured that was pretty good. Alex played in the playroom after he had eaten his breakfast, he only ate half of the hotcakes. I ate the other half, I figured I needed to eat more I was feeling pretty weird. On the way to McDonald’s the vision on my right eye went blurry on the outside corner. While I was eating it was there and then all of a sudden it disappeared and left me with a terrible headache. We went home and I took two panadol. I laid down but it was hard to rest with Alex coming in and out of the room. I got up and put a bag of frozen peas on my head. It took the headache away but the pain went into my eye. The strange thing was that the pain was on the left side. Alex saw me with the bag of peas on my head and decided that he should have one on too, so he got the bag of corn. We must of looked pretty funny!

I laid down again and fell asleep. I checked on Alex and he was asleep on the couch. I felt a lot better for having the sleep.

We left for Mom and Dad’s at three o’clock, on the way there we took back the video’s. We got there before four o’clock, Alex played quite a bit with Dad. He had told me before that he thought Grandpa was pretty silly.

After dinner Alex watched TV with Grandpa they both watched his tape believe it or not! We went home at eight thirty. Alex wasn’t tired at all when we got home. We watched TV and I tided up the house before we went to bed. Alex went to bed at eleven o’clock, much to his disgust he said I should be going to bed as well. I went to bed at midnight. Kelly barked three times before he settled down. I had to get up and check to make sure everything was okay. Then I finally was able to go to sleep.
