Diagnosis: Leukemia; August 30, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself. Dad phoned he said he wanted to come up to get his saw. I got dressed and by that time Dad had arrived. Charlie went with him, he brought his wooden horses for Dad to sue.

Alex’s friends came to the door to see if Alex could come out to play. I told them that he wasn’t ready yet but he would be out soon. I got ready to go to the hospital this afternoon I had an early lunch and got dressed to go.

Charlie phoned to tell me that he was at Mom and Dad’s and that I could take his car to the hospital. It annoyed me that he had left knowing that we had to go to the hospital. It meant that I had to do everything which also meant that I had to deal with Alex complaining because he wanted to play with his friends. I wouldn’t have minded any other day..

We left to get Charlie’s car at twelve o’clock. Mom asked what Alex was having which was too bad since I hadn’t told Alex what or where we were going. I just find it’s better if I don’t tell him as he complains a good part of the time. We had to go upstairs to the second floor as they are renovating the clinic downstairs. They sure are in tight quarters now, I couldn’t believe it. We were there at one o’clock which isn’t a busy time so I can’t imagine what it would be like or where they would put anyone. They put us in a small waiting room which had a sign saying “Quiet Zone”. I thought this will be interesting as Alex will have a hard time to keep quiet.

After awhile Heather came to weigh and measure Alex. Alex wanted me to come with him. Heather wanted to remeasure Alex as she said that he couldn’t have grown that much. I told her we had been to the doctor and that Alex had grown one inch within the last month. She said that was okay then. Another nurse took over but I didn’t see what her name was. She took Alex’s blood pressure. I asked how often it was done since Alex hadn’t had it taken within the last year. She said the last year? Her tone of voice was are you sure? I told her that it had been a very long time. She checked Alex’s chart and it hadn’t been done within the last month. She said I wonder if there is a reason for it. Then Mary came to take Alex’s blood, her room must be the worst. She’s in a closet with some of their supplies, that must be really hard.

At two o’clock Dr. S came to ask how Alex was doing. I told her that Alex was very irritable for the time he was taking the prednisone and two weeks after that. Dr. S told me that prednisone only makes them irritable for three days. So it has nothing to do with him being irritable. I told her that before prednisone was increased Alex was irritable for two weeks and now that it was increased he is irritable even more. Dr. S said well we cannot decrease the amount of prednisone he is taking. I just wanted her to know that Alex was very irritable when he is on the prednisone. I also mentioned that Alex had an allergy to the suntan lotion that he was using, and that Alex complained that his legs were bothering him. I thought it was due to jumping around too much.

Dr. S then examined Alex in the waiting area. Dr S said she had to wait for Alex’s blood count to come up before she ordered his Vincristine. She gave me Alex’s prescription. We went down to the pharmacy which the pharmacist said would take forty five minutes to fill. We walked around outside since I figured the Vincristine wouldn’t be up yet, it seems to take an hour to get up to the clinic. Alex decided to get his prize from the store in the hospital, he picked a Transformer. We went back upstairs and had to wait about half an hour before it was ready. Alex was happy because he got to watch Transformers before we left.

We went back to the pharmacy, the pharmacist said just who I wanted to talk to. She said that Dr. S had prescribed the Septra in the adult pills and he was to take ½ a pill. I told her that we had taken them before and Alex had a hard time taking them. In fact he had thrown up a couple of times with them. She phoned the doctor and was able to get them changed to the other ones.

We left the hospital at three thirty. We went to McDonalds afterwards, it was a bit early but that was okay. Afterwards we came home, Alex rode his bike outside with the other kids when we got home. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
