Diagnosis: Leukemia; February 28, 1989

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex came into my room to tell me he couldn’t sleep anymore. I told him to watch tv, that I would be up soon.

I made breakfast for Alex and myself. I was going to have a shower but Alex said he had to have one first.

Alex isn’t in the best of moods today but that’s pretty normal after he has had his treatment.

Alex played while I did some work around the house.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at five thirty, after dinner we watched tv.

I talked to Mom to see how Dad was, she said the doctor said he could come home on the weekend. That seems awfully soon after surgery.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I went to bed at ten o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; February 27, 1989

I woke up at ten o’clock. Alex was watching tv when I got up. I had a shower, got dressed then I made our breakfast.

We had an early lunch and left for the hospital. It was quite busy when we got there. Half an hour later Mary called Alex for his blood test. Usually I go in with Alex but he told me to stay in the waiting room, he wanted to go by himself.

We saw Sheila but she didn’t stay long. I told her I had registered Alex for Kindergarten. She said if anyone wants to talk to her to give them her phone number. Sheila said she deals with the schools.

At two o’clock we went to the cafeteria, when we came back Dr. S asked us to go to the examining room. I told her Alex had the pain in his leg. Dr. S told me I should keep a detailed report on when and how Alex gets the pain. She said if necessary they would x-ray his leg. I thought that was pretty strange since she had told me before that it was from jumping. The only reason I brought it up is they want you to tell them what has happened during the month.

Ale wasn’t very good while I was talking to the doctor. He was hitting the door and running into the walls. I told Alex to go to the playroom. Alex said NO, I’m staying here. A student nurse was outside the room and took Alex to the playroom. The problem was I was feeling pretty lousy and all that waiting and Alex acting up didn’t help.

The student nurse got Alex to do a puzzle with her. I told Alex I was going to the Pharmacy. Alex said okay and I went. The pharmacist said it would be half an hour. I went to the gift shop and the cafeteria before going back to the clinic. We waited until three thirty until the Vincristine finally came.

We had quite a time with Alex he didn’t want to have it, he told the nurse and myself. I had to hold his arm out so Lenore could check Alex’s veins. When it was all finished Alex told her he wasn’t coming back next month.

When we went to the pharmacy they said it wasn’t ready yet. We had been there more than an hour before and they had said half an hour. All we seemed to do was wait, wait and wait some more!

We finally left at ten to four. Alex fell asleep on the way to the mall. Alex wanted a COPS figure and the only place I thought they would be was at Metrotown.

When we got to the mall, Alex wanted me to carry him but I just didn’t feel that good to do so. Alex said then lets go home. I said you’ll be okay just hold my hand. Alex was still mad, he said he couldn’t walk but he did anyways.

We went to “Just for Kids” where they had quite a few COPS figures. They had Sergeant Mace, Barricade and Highway. Alex asked me which one I liked best. I said I like Sergeant Mace. Alex said ooh how come? He said he liked Barricade better. I said it’s up to you which one we buy. Alex decided on Barricade.

The traffic on the way home was terrible. We got home at five o’clock. I told Charlie who was already home that I wasn’t cooking dinner. I just felt too lousy to do it.

We went to Bonanza for dinner then I went to BCAA to renew my car insurance while Charlie and Alex went to Save On Foods.

Alex said he wanted to go see Grandma and check on how she was doing. We didn’t stay long. I was very very tired.

When we got home I went to bed. Charlie got Alex ready for bed.

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and had breakfast.

We left to pick Mom up to go to the hospital. Since I’m writing this in May I’m quite vague about what went on today. I think this was the time Dr. F had decided that Dad would have to have his foot amputated. When we got there Dad told us that another doctor had suggested he have his nerves cut for his foot. When they cut the nerve it helps the vein or artery to heal or make new veins. Mom didn’t take the news very well. She was almost annoyed that the doctor had suggested such a thing. She told Dad you were all set for the amputation and now you won’t be having it? Dad said he would rather try every alternative first before having his foot amputated.

Alex and Charlie had gone somewhere, it’s too hard for Alex to bed quiet for very long.

They came back around three o’clock. We all left shortly afterwards. We dropped Mom off, she didn’t want to get anything to eat.

We went out for dinner then we came home. Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Nora had also invited Nadine who lives half way down on Westlake and Charlene who lives in Allison’s house.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

After lunch I took Alex to the school to register him for kindergarten. Alex stayed in the kindergarten classroom while I went to the Library. I sat near Michelle, she was registering Lyle for kindergarten for January. The principal talked to us for awhile then the teacher and the school nurse. Then we had to fill out the form. When I gave the form to the principal I explained to him that Alex had Leukemia and that he might miss some school. The principal was really understanding. He said that’s part of his life and it’s something that has to be done.

Then I saw the school nurse, they photo copied Alex’s immunization card. I explained to the nurse that Alex wouldn’t be able to have his last shot for school entry. She asked me when Alex would be able to have his shot. I said not until Alex’s treatment was finished and maybe longer then that.

I went to the kindergarten classroom where I talked to the teacher. I explained about Alex having Leukemia and that he might miss school I told her that if there was flu, measles, mumps or chickenpox in the school I would have to keep Alex out. The teacher thought that would be pretty hard to do. I said well I did it last winter when Alex’s counts were so low.

Alex and I got home after two o’clock. I was exhausted form explaining about Alex’s condition.

Charlie got home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner we watched tv.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast. It had snowed last night. Alex said Kurt was outside and quickly got dressed. By the time Alex got outside Kurt went inside. I told Alex to go to his house and ask him to come outside. Alex came back to tell me Kurt was coming out soon.

About half an hour later Alex came home to say he was going to Kurt’s house.

Patrick came to play with Alex. I told him he was at Kurt’s house.

Then half an hour later Alex, Patrick and Benjamin came back. Alex said Kurt and his Mom were going shopping.

Morgan phoned at eleven thirty she asked me to send Patrick home, they were going shopping.

Benjamin stayed until noon when I told him it was time for us to have lunch.

After lunch I phoned Mom to see if they needed anything. Mom gave me a list of things she wanted. Mom hurt her back so she can’t go anywhere. Alex and I went to Save On Foods. We got to Mom and Dad’s at two o’clock. Mom’s in agony she can hardly move.

Dad’s doctor phoned at three o’clock. Mom told him to ask her about the color of his foot. His foot has been red and blue. The doctor told him to go to UBC hospital right away.

I said I would take Dad to the hospital. I figured Mom wouldn’t be able to since she hurt her back. She seemed quite happy to stay with Alex.

We left just before three o’clock. We stopped at my place to put the groceries away and leave a note for Charlie.

We got to the hospital at three thirty. We sat out in the waiting area until five thirty. I followed Dad in the emergency area but the nurse said I had to wait in the waiting room until they got Dad settled.

I waited for quite awhile but they didn’t call me so I went in. The nurse was doing an electrocardiograph then later another nurse took blood. An emergency doctor came to see Dad before six o’clock. She checked him over and said there wasn’t any point in him staying but she would check with Dr. F.

Dr. F saw Dad, I was coming back from phoning Mom. I told her the nurse had been able to get a pulse out of his foot. She was really thrilled to hear that. I said I would phone back later.

Dr. F said to me is this your guy. I said yes he is. Dr. F said well he can go home, there’s nothing we can do for him.

I phoned Mom back to tell her we would be home soon.

We got home around seven o’clock. Mom had made us dinner. I was so hungry I had the shakes!

We stayed for an hour or so and came home. I got Alex ready for bed. Alex wanted to play for awhile so I let him stay up until nine o’clock.

Alex woke up at ten o’clock. He said he had a really good sleep. He watched tv then asked for his breakfast.

I wanted to go out to the mall and get a few things but Alex said he had to build the police station. Then he asked me to help him. I said if your not going to cooperate why should I help? Alex went into his room and slammed the door. When I told Alex he could buy something with the money he got, Alex couldn’t wait to go.

We went to the mall after lunch. Alex decided to buy the assault vehicle of the COPS. We came home at two thirty. Alex asked me to put the assault vehicle together then he played in the spare room.

I watched tv for awhile then I went downstairs and clean up the basement. Alex came down with me to play and listen to Ghostbusters.

Charlie came home before we finished. He had a shower and went to Save On Foods. I started to cook dinner at four thirty. Alex and I waited until twenty after five then we decided to eat dinner. Charlie arrived back at five thirty, he had gone to a couple of places.

After dinner I did the dishes and went to London Drugs. I got home at seven o’clock. I gave Alex the felt markers I bought him. He used them right away.

At seven thirty I told Alex to get ready for bed. Well, you know what Alex did, he got mad! He said I don’t like going to bed. I told him I didn’t like going to bed when I was a kid either. Alex felt better when he heard that. Alex took the assault vehicle and two figures to bed.

We came home at three o’clock. Alex hid Pa’s Valentine’s present in the spare room closet.

After Charlie had come home we got ready to go out for dinner. We went to Hon Lock, it sure was busy. Luckily we were able to get a table.

Alex wasn’t watching what he was doing. First he spilt his tea then he spilt his 7UP all over Charlie. I sure was glad I wasn’t sitting beside Alex!

Charlie phoned the Chew’s to see if they would be home and if anyone was sick. They said they would be going out at six thirty. Charlie said he had a present to drop off for Carrie, Robert and Neil.

When we got there they asked us to come in for awhile. Alex played with the other kids for awhile. Alex got money from Mr and Mrs Chew, Paul and Laura for Chinese New Years.

I did some work around the house and got ready to go down. Charlie went grocery shopping. We waited for him but he wasn’t back yet so we left. Charlie arrived about twenty minutes later. Mom left at two thirty to next door. They didn’t tell her what occasion it was for but I saw birthday balloons outside so maybe it someone’s birthday! Mom said she would feel badly if it was since she didn’t bring a gift.

We watched tv while Mom was gone. Alex and I also played a video game.

Mom came back before four o’clock. She said she didn’t know anyone there. It was a party for two of their children’s their birthday.

Mom asked us to stay for dinner. We didn’t eat dinner until six o’clock.

It was too long for Alex to be there. He’s use to playing in his own house or being able to watch one of his tapes. Alex didn’t behave very well after dinner. I told him not to do something and he kicked me. Then I tapped his hand and he ran towards the family room screaming. I told him to come here right away. Alex hugged me once he came over to me. He hugged me so hard it hurt my throat. Alex apologized five minutes later and was okay the rest of the time we were there.

We left at nine o’clock. I told Alex he had to go to bed right away. Alex was mad because he thought he could play for awhile. I said not when you were naughty at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Alex said can I have a snack please. I said yes but don’t take too long to decided what you want.

When we got home Kurt phoned Alex. Alex went over to his house to play. I watched tv and started to cook dinner at five o’clock. Alex came home before six o’clock. He said he had a good time. They took William somewhere, he was late getting home from school.

We ate dinner after six o’clock. After dinner Alex and I worked on his writing. Alex is learning to print with capital and lower case letters. Alex seems to give up very easily. I told him that Brent didn’t know how to write with lower case letters which made it harder for him. I said I want you to be able to print so you won’t have any trouble when you go to school. Alex said okay I’ll try. Alex did really well he printed the alphabet twice, first in lower case then in Capital letters.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. Alex was mad he said I never have any fun! Then when we went to do speak and read the batteries were too low so it didn’t work. Alex picked a prize from Grandma’s basket. Alex got dinosaur stickers which we did before he went to bed.

I woke up at ten o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. I changed the sheets on our bed, did the laundry and the dishes.

After lunch Alex and I went to take Dad the Coleco Vision but my car’s battery was dead. Charlie hadn’t closed the drivers side door properly on Saturday night, when he had come home from work.

We went back into the house. Charlie put the charger on the battery.

Patrick came to play with Alex in the afternoon.

Charlie checked the car, he said by just having the charger on for a few hours the battery is okay.

We told Patrick we were going out and he left. Alex and I went to Mom and Dad’s while Charlie went to work.

Dad and I tried to get the Coleco vision hooked up but we needed a cable adapter which we didn’t have.

We left at three thirty. Alex watched COPS while I did the laundry.

I started to cook dinner at five o’clock. We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner we watched tv. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv, wrote in the journal and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; February 3, 1989

I woke up at nine thirty. I heard Charlie leaving and the phone ringing. Charlie came back upstairs to answer the phone. It was Kurt on the phone. Charlie told Kurt that Alex was still in bed. I said Alex is awake just wait. Alex talked to Kurt, Kurt asked Alex to come over. Alex said he wasn’t dressed but he would be over soon.

Alex had a shower and got dressed then he went to Kurt’s house. I tried to get him to have breakfast but he didn’t want anything. I had breakfast, I had already gotten dressed while Alex was in the shower.

When Charlie came home he said he wanted to go for Dim Sum. Alex came home at eleven forty five. We left shortly afterwards. Alex was in a better mood than he has been all week. So it was an enjoyable lunch!

After lunch we went to Fanny’s Fabric. I let Alex pick out the material for curtains for his room. Alex picked out cars and trucks. The sales woman was rude. I asked her how much material I would need for a window 34” X 46”. she said haven’t you figured it our yet. I said how wide is the material. She said it’s 60” wide. Then Charlie and I figured out how much I should need. A lot of help she was!

We came home and I asked Charlie to put the sewing machine upstairs. Alex watched tv while I tided up the house.

I phoned Mom to see how they made out yesterday. She said she was going to take Dad out to the store. Mom said her foot hurt so much she couldn’t get he shoe on. Mom asked me to get Dad 100 Tylenol capsules, extra strength. I said I was going to go out at five o’clock. I promised Alex we would go to McDonald’s for dinner. She said that was fine.

Mom phoned back shortly afterwards, she said Dad wanted a hamburger and fries from McDonald’s. I asked her if she wanted anything. She said she wanted a chicken burger and fries.

We left at four thirty, first we went to Pharmasave. Alex wanted to buy something. I said no because their toys are quite expensive. Alex was really mad, he stomped his feet as we walked down the aisle. Alex grabbed a package of lifesavers. I told him to put it back. If Alex had asked me I would have said yes. Alex was really mad then. I said you shouldn’t act like that. Alex apologized and I told him he could pick out something but he had to be quick as it was my turn soon at the cash register. By the time it was my turn Alex hadn’t decided. I told him to come and stand beside me it was too late. Alex was really upset and started to cry.

We left Pharmasave and went to McDonald’s. Alex played in the playroom before we left.

Mom was in a lot of pain with her foot. It was a good thing she didn’t have to cook.

We watched tv after dinner. We came home at ten o’clock. Alex went to bed right away. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

We didn’t do too much the rest of the day. With Alex being on prednisone he gets pretty cranky. There’s always a lot of fighting, especially between Charlie and Alex. Charlie seems to enjoy making us mad. He just doesn’t understand that he should treat Alex differently when he’s on prednisone. I always do, I usually leave him alone and let him do what he wants within reason!

Kurt came over in the afternoon after school. They play pretty good together, there isn’t any fighting usually.

We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner Alex colored while I did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at ten o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. I did the dishes and tided up the house.

After lunch I took Alex to his class. While Alex was in his class I went shopping for Mom. When I picked Alex up he said that they made jello surprise. Alex said he saved some for me.

We stopped at Mom and Dad’s on the way home. When we went to go at three thirty Mom invited us for dinner. I went home to put my milk away I had bought. Before I went back I rented a couple of movies. We ate dinner at five o’clock.

After dinner Alex watched his movie. Dad fell asleep while it was on, he’s not getting very much sleep maybe a few hours a night.

Alex sure made a lot of noise while we’re there and he also complains a lot. I know it’s hard for him to be quiet but he can’t be too noisy when Dad isn’t feeling very well.

We left at nine thirty. I told Alex he could watch the rest of his movie. As soon as it was over Alex went to bed.

I went to bed shortly after Alex.

I phoned Mom after I had finished getting my hair trimmed. She asked me to pick up a few things. I stayed at their place until two o’clock and came home. It had started to snow but it’s so cold I don’t think it’ll last.
