Diagnosis: Leukemia; February 27, 1989

I woke up at ten o’clock. Alex was watching tv when I got up. I had a shower, got dressed then I made our breakfast.

We had an early lunch and left for the hospital. It was quite busy when we got there. Half an hour later Mary called Alex for his blood test. Usually I go in with Alex but he told me to stay in the waiting room, he wanted to go by himself.

We saw Sheila but she didn’t stay long. I told her I had registered Alex for Kindergarten. She said if anyone wants to talk to her to give them her phone number. Sheila said she deals with the schools.

At two o’clock we went to the cafeteria, when we came back Dr. S asked us to go to the examining room. I told her Alex had the pain in his leg. Dr. S told me I should keep a detailed report on when and how Alex gets the pain. She said if necessary they would x-ray his leg. I thought that was pretty strange since she had told me before that it was from jumping. The only reason I brought it up is they want you to tell them what has happened during the month.

Ale wasn’t very good while I was talking to the doctor. He was hitting the door and running into the walls. I told Alex to go to the playroom. Alex said NO, I’m staying here. A student nurse was outside the room and took Alex to the playroom. The problem was I was feeling pretty lousy and all that waiting and Alex acting up didn’t help.

The student nurse got Alex to do a puzzle with her. I told Alex I was going to the Pharmacy. Alex said okay and I went. The pharmacist said it would be half an hour. I went to the gift shop and the cafeteria before going back to the clinic. We waited until three thirty until the Vincristine finally came.

We had quite a time with Alex he didn’t want to have it, he told the nurse and myself. I had to hold his arm out so Lenore could check Alex’s veins. When it was all finished Alex told her he wasn’t coming back next month.

When we went to the pharmacy they said it wasn’t ready yet. We had been there more than an hour before and they had said half an hour. All we seemed to do was wait, wait and wait some more!

We finally left at ten to four. Alex fell asleep on the way to the mall. Alex wanted a COPS figure and the only place I thought they would be was at Metrotown.

When we got to the mall, Alex wanted me to carry him but I just didn’t feel that good to do so. Alex said then lets go home. I said you’ll be okay just hold my hand. Alex was still mad, he said he couldn’t walk but he did anyways.

We went to “Just for Kids” where they had quite a few COPS figures. They had Sergeant Mace, Barricade and Highway. Alex asked me which one I liked best. I said I like Sergeant Mace. Alex said ooh how come? He said he liked Barricade better. I said it’s up to you which one we buy. Alex decided on Barricade.

The traffic on the way home was terrible. We got home at five o’clock. I told Charlie who was already home that I wasn’t cooking dinner. I just felt too lousy to do it.

We went to Bonanza for dinner then I went to BCAA to renew my car insurance while Charlie and Alex went to Save On Foods.

Alex said he wanted to go see Grandma and check on how she was doing. We didn’t stay long. I was very very tired.

When we got home I went to bed. Charlie got Alex ready for bed.
