Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 30, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed.

I phoned Shirley to see how Monique was. She said Monique was doing better but she also had the flu. Shirley said she might drop by later in the afternoon by herself.

In the morning I went to register Alex for a gym class.

In the afternoon Alex and I went shopping. We rented a movie, Charlie had to work tonight.

When we got back Shirley was parked in the driveway. I had Charlie’s car and I had to open the garage door. Shirley thought I was being funny and started to drive in then she backed out and parked on my side.

We went into the house and had a laugh over her going into the garage.

Alex watched the movie while Shirley and I talked. Alex fell asleep at four o’clock and woke up just before Shirley left.

We had dinner at six thirty. Alex and I watched TV. We went to bed at eleven o’clock.

We had dinner after five o’clock.

I woke up at ten o’clock. I had a breakfast, had a shower and got dressed.

We went to Marla’s in the afternoon. Alex had a good time playing with Lanie. He said he likes going to her house because I stay with him.

I wanted to leave after four o’clock but Alex didn’t want to leave. We left after Alex had a snack and Ducktales was over.

Shirley was suppose to phone us at home around 4:45 p.m. we were meeting at Bino’s, they were having an Anniversary Special.

I thought if we went down to the restaurant they would be there. When we got there they weren’t there so we came home. Not long after we got home Shirley phone and said they were at the restaurant. We must of just missed them.

We went back to the restaurant. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant. Shirley and Aaron were quite disappointed with the menu. They had changed the menu from last year. Last year the whole menu was half price but this year it was only a few items that were half price.

Monique wasn’t feeling too good, her eye looks infected. She was feeling pretty miserable by the time we finished dinner.

Aaron and Monique went home. Shirley, Brent, Alex and I went to McDonalds. We stayed for an hour or so then we drove them home and went home ourselves.

Alex had a snack then went to bed.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 26, 1988

I forgot to write in January 25 entry that I went to the doctor. By the afternoon the pain in my face was terrible. I couldn’t get an appointment but I was an extra. Alex wanted to come with me, he said he didn’t want to go to Kurt’s house without me. He said he doesn’t like it when I leave home there, he says I take too long.

We were sitting out in the waiting room when Dr. W came out. He came over to say hi, he asked if Alex was coming to see him. I told him I was coming to see him, I had pain in my face. Dr W said just a moment I’m going to talk to someone and I’ll see you in a few minutes. The nurses called us and we saw him right away.

The first thing he said was thank you for your Christmas card. He went on to say that if he had given any help he was glad. He also said you’ve had a hard year let’s hope you have a better year this year.

I thought that was really nice of him to thank us.

Dr. W said I had a sinus infection. He gave me a prescription and I told him we would be back on Thursday. Dr. W said to Alex I’ll see you in three more sleeps. We went to London Drugs and came home.

Alex wanted me to play with him but my face hurt too much.

Now back to January 26.

I woke up at ten o’clock. The pain has decreased quite a bit, my jaw still aches.

We went out to the mall and came home at lunch time.

I played with Alex a little bit in the afternoon. I really wasn’t up to much.

We had dinner after five o’clock. We watched TV after dinner, Alex went to bed at eight o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex was awake but he was already mad. He was cold and didn’t want to get dressed. I finally got him dressed then he wanted to sit on the sofa and have a blanket wrapped around him. He said he didn’t want anything to eat.

I went and got ready to go out, we had to go to Alex’s class. I told Alex if he wanted something to eat he had better eat because we had to go soon. Alex said he wasn’t hungry but when it was time to go he said he was hungry. I told him we had to go and he said he had to eat. I said ok what do you want? Alex said he wanted hot cereal. I brought out the cereal box which Alex smashed out of my hand. He said I don’t want that kind of cereal, I want the kind Pa makes. I said fine I’m going to phone your teacher and tell her to cross your name off her list. This really changed things. Alex said her wanted to go right now, but he wanted to bring the blanket with him because he was cold.

Believe it or not we made it to the class on time. Marla was there with Paxton and Lanie. I said to her if I had to go through this every Monday we wouldn’t be coming.

Marla and I sat and talked while the class was on. It was really quite relaxing.

Alex was fine throughout the class but Lanie came out crying.

When we got home we had lunch . Alex asked me to play with him. We had dinner at five o’clock. We watched TV after dinner, alex went to bed at nine o’clock.

Charlie went out shopping, Alex played in the spare room most of the morning.

Alex and I got ready to go to Monique Chew’s birthday party. Charlie had to work overtime. Alex and I left for the party. They had the party at McDonald’s in Vancouver near the Expo site. Monique is so shy that she didn’t want to leave Andrea.

Most of the kids wanted to go to the play room but I couldn’t see the playroom form my table. So I went with Alex and stayed with him. I was the only one who stayed with their child.

After the party Alex and I went to the Chew’s, only a few people came back to the house. We stayed until eight o’clock. My teeth were really aching and the pain hasn’t lessened yet.

When we got home I put some ambesol on my teeth but it didn’t do anything.

We watched TV, Alex and I played the game. Charlie was going to the bank so I asked him to take Alex as I wasn’t feeling that good. Alex got mad because he didn’t want to go. Finally he decided he would go.

I had a shower and got dressed. Then they were back again.

I did a lot of resting as I still don’t feel that good. I washed the dishes after lunch then I phoned Nora to see if Kurt could come over. Nora said why don’t you bring Alex over since Kurt came over to your house last week.

I took Alex over and came home. I wrote in the journal for about an hour. Then I tided up the house.

Nora brought Alex back at three o’clock. Kurt said he wanted to come and play with Alex. I said that was alright. Nora said she would be back after she took William to the dentist.

Kurt went home around five o’clock.

We went to McDonald’s for dinner. Then we went to the mall, my teeth were hurting so we didn’t stay long. I think it’s my sinuses that are bothering me.

I woke up at 5:45 a.m., Alex came into our room and asked me to fix his comforter. I did and he went back to sleep, I also went back to bed.

Alex woke me up again at eight thirty, he asked if he could have his prize for sleeping in his own bed. I’ve been giving him a prize for sleeping in his own bed. Since Christmas it’s been the first time in a very long time that he has slept in his own bed.

I made breakfast for us and we watched TV. Alex wanted to play memory but I told him after I had a shower. This made Alex mad and he started screaming. I told Alex he needed to have a bath. He was still pretty mad when I was getting him reading for his bath. Alex screamed all the way to the bathroom, he finally stopped when he went into the bath.

I got Alex dry and dressed then we played memory game. Charlie was having a shower so I had to wait awhile.

After the game I had a shower and got dressed. I went out shopping by myself. I came back before one o’clock.

Charlie and Alex came back from McDonald’s about five minutes after I got home.

I told Alex to go for a nap.

We were suppose to go to Marla’s but her kids have the flu.

I told Alex after his nap he could watch a movie and invite a friend over.

Nora phoned before two o’clock and asked if Alex could come over. I told her Alex wanted Kurt to come over to watch the movie we rented. I told her I would phone her back when Alex woke up.

I woke Alex up at 2:15 p.m. and gave him his medicine.

Kurt and Nora came over at 2:45 p.m. I asked Nora to stay for tea. She stayed for awhile then left after three o’clock as her other boys would be coming home from school.

I wrapped some prizes I bought for Alex. The boys played and watched the rest of the movie.

I made them hot chocolate, gave them cheese, fun fruit and a sandwich.

Kurt went home at five o’clock. We had dinner around six o’clock.

We watched TV after dinner. I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. It’s a lot easier to get him ready for bed now that he doesn’t complain to get ready for bed. Alex likes to sleep on the top bunk and he sleeps there all night, most nights.

I made bran muffins and watched TV. My throat is sore I think I’m getting a cold. Alex had a cough for a few days now.

After the muffins came out of the oven Alex and I had one. Then I had a shower and got dressed.

Charlie went out shopping and came back after twelve o’clock.

I told Alex he had to have a nap. He went to sleep at one o’clock.

I watched TV and had lunch.

I woke Alex up at two fifteen. I gave him his medicine.

We watched TV and played Hamburger, light and learn and big bird games. Then we did some gluing with tissue paper, cotton balls and macaroni.

We had dinner after five o’clock. We watched TV and then I wrote in the journal for a while.

Alex wants me to continually play with him. He seems to need all my attention today. While I was writing in the journal he was playing with his cars. He tried to annoy me by making loud noises and putting his cars where I didn’t want him. I told him to stop and if he didn’t I would put the bucket of cars back to the spare room. He continued to do this, so I put them back. Alex had a temper tantrum, I left him alone. He went into the spare room and slammed the door. Alex came out five minutes later and apologized.

At seven thirty I gave Alex his medicine and got him ready for bed.

I watched TV, put away Alex’s toys did the dishes and tided up the house.

I wrote in the journal some more then I’m going to go to bed.

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower and got Alex to have a bath.

Charlie was really cranky, Alex had woken up at five o’clock and was calling out. Charlie had gotten up and couldn’t go back to sleep. Charlie was quite irritated that I had sleep through it all.

I got Alex dried and dressed. Then I got dressed and packed the diaper bag. All the time Charlie was saying we’re going to be late hurry up, hurry up. Meanwhile he’s sitting on the sofa doing nothing!

We left for the hospital before nine o’clock and got there at nine forty. When we got there Ida the children’s’ therapist was there. Alex did some painting, the doctor saw him and he had his blood taken.

Charlie asked me what Alex was having done today which totally irritated me. You would think by now he would remember. I told him so and he said well I can’t remember everything. I said so it’s up to me to remember it all.

The Dr. S asked us when Alex had Methotrexiate. I told her not last Monday but the Monday before that. No doubt she didn’t understand as she said why was that. I said because Alex is suppose to have a LP today, so I didn’t give him any this week. She said oh you mean last Monday that past. I said Yes!

Dr S said they would be ready for the LP in five minutes.

Charlie said he was going to the Pharmacy. I told him to go later as if he wasn’t there Alex wouldn’t go in. The doctor and the nurses would have to wait which would annoy them.

Charlie does try to get out of going. He doesn’t like to watch, especially since Alex always cries out in pain.

After Alex had his LP he laid down for an hour. Alex didn’t want to but otherwise he’ll end up with a headache for a couple of days. That would be terrible!

Before noon Alex had Vincristine I.V. push and some more blood taken. The blood is to check that his liver and kidney are okay.

We went home, we stopped at Church’s for lunch. On the way home Alex fell asleep, I put him into his bed.

I watched TV and did the dishes. I let Alex sleep as long as he wanted I figured he had been through a lot today and he needed it.

Alex woke up at four o’clock. I gave him a present for being so good at the hospital, he hardly complained at all. I was really proud of him.

I got him light and learn, it took me an hour to put it together. It’s very poorly made, I sure wouldn’t recommend it.

Then I tided up the house. Shirley and the kids came over before seven o’clock.

Alex and Brent were playing light and learn but they started to fight. The problem was Brent would tell Alex the right answer therefore, Alex felt he should have another turn. They started to fight as to who’s turn it was.

I took the game away from them since they wouldn’t stop fighting.

They left at nine o’clock. I got Alex ready for bed shortly after they left.

I also went to bed at ten thirty.

I woke up at ten o’clock. Shirley phoned when we were still in bed. I had phoned her yesterday afternoon but she was out. Aaron was so polite when I had phoned it was ridiculous. I told Shirley about it we laughed over his change of tune.

After I got off the phone I had breakfast and got dressed.

Alex and Charlie had lunch, after lunch Charlie dropped us off at the theatre. Alex and I saw Cinderella.

It was the first time in a long time that Alex hasn’t complained and wanted to go home. Charlie picked us up and we came home around three o’clock.

I put away the dishes then we went out for dinner. It was good to get out. I’m not use to staying home that much on the weekend, but Charlie wasn’t feeling too good this weekend. After dinner we went to a new video store. The place we usual go to, the owner has been rude to us a few times. Charlie said there’s no way he’ll go back.

We got home at seven o’clock. Alex watched his movie right away.

Kelly knocked over one of my plants and I had to vacuum up the dirt. After I finished and I started to put away the vacuum, Alex threw something at me. He’s been very cheeky lately and doesn’t listen to me. I told him not to do it and he called me a few names. I told him he had to go to his room then he started to scream. He screamed for about half an hour off and one.

I got Alex ready for bed and he went to sleep at nine o’clock.

We watched the movies we rented.

Mom and Dad phoned, I think Mom was worried that we were okay.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed. I got ready to go to the mall. Alex wanted to stay home with Charlie, but Charlie said he felt terrible and he couldn’t look after Alex. Charlie has a cold.

I finally convinced Alex he should come. We went to pay my credit card bill then we went to Toy City, the mall and McDonald’s. Everywhere was really busy.

We got home at two thirty. We ate lunch which we had brought from McDonald’s.

I made dinner for Alex and Charlie. I didn’t want to eat since we had a late lunch.

After dinner we watched TV. I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock.

It started snowing this afternoon. At one point it was really coming down. Alex wanted to go outside to shovel the snow. I stayed in the garage and cleaned out my car while Alex shovelled the snow.

One of the neighbours’ two houses up came and asked if she could use our phone. She said her name was Donna Bentley and she had forgotten her key. She said her daughter was suppose to be here already. We talked for awhile then she went to her car to wait for her daughter.

Kurt came over to help Alex shovel the snow. Alex and I took him home after they had played for awhile.

We had dinner after five o’clock. Then we went to the mall.

We came home at eight o’clock. We watched TV then I got Alex ready for bed.

I woke up at ten o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed. I put away Alex’s laundry and washed the towels.

Marla phoned in the afternoon to tell me registration for Coquitlam Rec Centre is tonight.

I decided to put Alex into a class that Lanie was going in. I told Marla I would save her a place.

Alex had gone for a nap at one o’clock. I woke him up at three o’clock.

I started to make dinner at three thirty. We ate at four thirty.

Nora phoned and said she would be at the Rec Centre at five thirty. I told her no as it was too early. Registration isn’t until seven o’clock, there just handing out numbers.

We left for the Rec Centre at six o’clock. We went to Chimo pool but it was in the Social building. We met Alex’s swimming instructor at Chimo and I explained why we hadn’t been. Unfortunately I got a little emotional. I still find it difficult to talk to people about Alex being sick.

We went and sat down and waited for a number. Marla came about five or ten minutes later. We talked until they gave out the numbers. It was nice to talk to someone else.

Alex and I came home and watched TV. We played a game before he went to bed. Alex went to bed at nine o’clock.

I watched TV, cleaned up my desk, did the dishes and tided up the house.

I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Barbara phoned at eleven forty five. She asked to talk to Charlie, she said she was going to Borneo tomorrow. Charlie was just coming in so he talked to her.

Charlie said his mother is out of the hospital. He expects she’s alright now.

I went back to bed.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 6, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex had woken me up at four o’clock. He came into bed with us.

When I woke up at nine o’clock. I got ready to go to my exercise class. I came home at eleven thirty.

I had a shower, got dressed and had my lunch when I got home. I told Alex he had to have a nap. He went to sleep at one o’clock. I washed both bunk bed sheets, did the dishes and tided up the house.

I woke Alex up at three o’clock. We went to London Drugs and then we at ate McDonald’s. We came home at five o’clock. We got ready for Shirley to pick us up. We’re all going to the Ice Capades together. They arrived at 6:20 p.m. and we all went in their car. There was six of us, four in the backseat. It was a pretty tight fit!

The Ice Capades weren’t bad but I liked last years better. It was my first year last year. So it might have made a better impression. Shirley’s in-laws were there, they were really checking us out!

I bought Alex a few souvenirs, I can never resist.

After the show we came home. Shirley just dropped us off and went home as well.

I got Alex ready for bed it was almost eleven o’clock by this time.

He’s been a lot better about going to bed. He hardly complains at all, he must need this extra sleep.

I had a bit of a time with him at the Ice Capades. Near the end of the show he started to complain, he said he wanted to go home. He called me a stupid idiot. At one point I had to cover his mouth, he was screaming so much.

I went to bed around eleven thirty.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 5, 1988

I woke up at eight o’clock. Charlie and Alex were still asleep. Alex woke me up at four o’clock.

I had a shower and got dressed. Alex woke up at nine o’clock. We got ready then we went to Lorrie’s, she’s having a play group.

There were 5 mothers and five children, two babies. Toni was the only girl beside the babies which was too bad as the boys picked on her. I had to scold Alex a couple of times.

We walked home with Allison, Kurt and the baby.

Charlie went out and when he went to go Alex started to cry. We both tried to help him get his boots and jacket, but he refused to let us help. He had such a bad temper tantrum I had to take him to his room. He’s definitely over tired.

He got himself in such a rage he became hysterical. He ran downstairs to the garage. I called to Charlie to come back. They left after I got Alex’s jacket and boots on.

It really upsets me when we fight like this.

I went for a walk with Kelly. I was still pretty upset I couldn’t calm myself down.

When they came back I told Alex he had to go for a nap. He didn’t complain too much.

I wrote a letter to Mom and Dad. Then I woke Alex up at three o’clock. I let home pick a prize.

We played the small car game. Then I wrote in the journal for a couple of hours. I’m about a week or more behind in the journal, or I was!

I started dinner, we ate at four o’clock. I wrote in the journal after dinner.

We went downstairs and I exercised.

Alex helped me put away his toys. Then he said he was ready to go to bed. This really surprised me! Alex was in bed by eight o’clock.

I wrote in the journal until nine o’clock. Then I collected the garbage and took it downstairs. I did the dishes and the laundry.

I wrote in the journal and watched TV. I’ll be going to bed soon.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 4, 1988

I woke up at ten o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed.

I started to take down the Christmas tree. Alex was quite annoyed I was taking it down. He said I want it to stay up longer. I told him even if I did that you would still complain.

After I took everything off Charlie took it outside and put it on the sun deck.

I vacuumed the house and did four loads of laundry.

Alex fell asleep at three o’clock, I woke him up at five o’clock.

After diner we went to K-Mart then we went to pick up a parcel at the post office. We opened the parcel when we got home. Alex got a puzzle from Ken and I got P.J.’s from Naomi.

I watched TV and wrote in the journal.

I got Alex ready for bed at ten o’clock. It’s a lot easier to get him to brush his teeth after he heard about Robert. Robert went to the dentist and had four cavities. The dentist gave him a couple of needles and drilled and filled his teeth.

I still find it a little strange filling a child’s tooth when there still baby teeth. Now every night Alex brushes his teeth, it think he’s afraid he’ll have to have a needle in this mouth too!

I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 3, 1988

I woke up at eleven o’clock. I must have been really tired. I had a shower and got dressed.

I had lunch and got ready to go out. We went to Oakridge, Shirley phoned earlier to ask if we wanted to go to a movie. I told her we were going out.

We went to A & B Sound and I found a new cd. Then we went to Shanghai for dinner. After dinner we went to the Chew’s. Jolene was on her way out to an adult birthday party.

Alex gave Carrie and Robert a car to play with while we were there. Next thing we know Carrie said she can’t find the car Alex let her have. Robert gave the car back to Alex but we couldn’t find Carrie’s.

Then she said, it disappeared. That was very suspicious. It really irritated me that she would act like that. Alex wasn’t too upset about it. He said he could always buy another one.

Paul finally found it behind a potted plant. We left shortly afterwards.

Alex went to bed at ten o’clock.

I watched TV and went to bed around midnight.

We woke up at nine o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed.

I tided up the house, did the dishes, laundry and put away Alex’s toys.

We met Shirley, Aaron, Shirley’s stepfather and the kids at Stanley Park. We went on the train together then we went to Fresco’s for dinner. We came back to our house.

I brought out my baking stuff and Charlie gave everyone wine. Then later in the evening I served coffee and tea.

Alex had a temper tantrum when he was playing a game with Brent. He said Brent had cheated, but Brent was just playing the game. In Hamburger if you land on the other persons kitchen they can take one of your tiles. Alex landed on Brent’s kitchen, therefore Brent took Alex’s tile. Then Alex said you cheated.

Alex screamed and yelled and made quite a scene. It was a bit embarrassing having Shirley’s stepfather there.

I took Alex to his room and told him to be quiet. I also told him he had to stay in his room until he stopped. He finally calmed down and he came out with me.

He refused to play with Brent for an hour or so.

Alex finally started to play with Brent. They left at eleven o’clock. I put Alex to bed shortly afterwards.

I also went to bed.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; December 31, 1987

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed.

Shirley phoned and asked what time she should pick up Alex. I told her we couldn’t find anywhere to go. Most people we know seem to be staying home.

I asked Shirley if they were going to their friends as planned. She said the friends cancelled after they found out Shirley and Aaron were having marital problems.

I told her they should come over here and we could have snacks throughout the night. We arranged to get together at eight o’clock.

Charlie and Alex went to Save-On Foods to get the food for tonight. They dropped me off at the mall. They met me an hour later at the Bay and we came home at three o’clock.

I tided up the house, vacuumed the house, cleaned the living room furniture. Then I started to prepared the vegetables to go with the dip.

I had a shower and got dressed. It wasn’t long after that they arrived. Shirley and I got the food ready. Charlie got everyone some wine. We had a vegetable tray consisting of broccoli, carrots, celery and dip, chips and dip, and baking stuff. Shirley brought small quiches, sausage rolls, tortilla triangle, pretzels and Nanaimo bars.

We had our snacks, Aaron and Charlie were watching a movie which was over at ten o’clock. Shirley and I played video games until it was over then we watched a movie we rented.

When the movie was over Aaron, Brent, Alex and I played bumper cars. Then it was midnight! We went to the sun deck and yelled HAPPY NEW YEAR!! The corner house on Westlake was out and they were about to go in but when they saw us they came out again.

We came in and Charlie opened the bottle of Champagne, we toasted each other.

It sure was an enjoyable evening. One of my better New Year Eves!

We watched another video, Shirley, Aaron and Monique left at two thirty.

I cleaned everything up and finally went to bed at three thirty.

Alex went to bed at one thirty, Brent stayed overnight.
