Alex woke me up at eight o’clock to tell me he had gone to the bathroom. I got Alex dressed and gave him his breakfast. I tided up the house and did the dishes.
Alex and I went to Metrotown, unfortunately I didn’t know that they opened at noon and we got there at eleven thirty. The mall was opened but the stores weren’t except for the food section. I bought Alex a cookie and something to drink. We didn’t stay long in the mall as Alex was getting tired.
We went to Westwood mall to get some things for Alex’s party. Then we went to Toy City to get some prizes for Alex’s bucket.
We got home around two o’clock. I started to cook dinner at three o’clock.
Charlie came home from work at four o’clock.
Shirley dropped by for an hour or so with Monique.
We had dinner before six o’clock.
Alex and I played a game before he went to bed. He went to bed at eight o’clock.

I watched my movie after Alex watched his for the second time.
In the afternoon we went to Mom and Dad’s to get the mail. Then we went to the motor home show. Alex said Wow look at all the motor homes. He really enjoyed himself, we went into almost every motor home. I was really tired by the time we left. We saw Jeff and Martina there. Martina went to look for her mother and friend.
We went out for dinner then we came home. Alex played some games with us before he went to bed. He went to bed at nine o’clock.

Alex woke me up at seven thirty. He’s been getting up between seven thirty and eight o’clock every day, it’s hard to get use to getting up that early. I can’t complain some children get up even earlier.
I got Alex dressed and gave him his breakfast.
We met Marla and the kids at Coquitlam Rec Centre. Marla and Paxton went to their class while we went to the park beside the Rec Centre.
When the class was over Marla invited us to their house for lunch. Alex had a really good time playing with Lanie, this time they didn’t even fight. We left before six o’clock as usual I had a hard time getting Alex to leave.
We stopped at the video store and rented a couple of movies. Alex watched his movie as soon as we got home.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; February 25, 1988
I woke up at eight o’clock. I got Alex dressed and gave him his breakfast.
We left for the hospital at ten o’clock. Alex had his blood test done at eleven o’clock. Dr. S said Alex’s blood count was down and she couldn’t figure what had happened. She said I guess I’ll have to take Alex off his medicine. Then she said that maybe the Septra was interfering with the blood count, she said that it often happens. She said she wanted to change the Septra dose from seven days a week to three days a week.
Dr. S then asked when Alex had Methotrexiate last. I told her he has it on Mondays. She said how come you didn’t change the day. I said you told me to change it back to Mondays. Dr. S then said well Alex will have to come back on Monday and don’t give him his Methotrexiate until later.
Dr. S really makes me wonder, it was obvious that she was trying to blame me. As far as I’m concerned things were really messed up. I feel if I hadn’t given Alex his Methotrexiate on Monday, before his first appointment (February 10) his blood count would be different. Heather said it wouldn’t affect the blood count and to go ahead and give it to Alex. Everything probably would have worked out like they do normally. Alex’s blood count might have been a little lower than normal since he had a cold.
We left the clinic at 11:30, Alex wanted to have some Jell-O before we went home.
We went to PoCo Rec Centre after the hospital. Alex fell asleep on the way.
I read in the car while Alex was in Mini Sport. Cindy (the teacher) asked if Alex was sick since he hadn’t been to class for the past two weeks. Then she commented on the band aids and bruises on Alex. I felt I had to say something. I said that Alex has been quite ill and that he had been for a blood test. Cindy said do they know what the problem is? I told her Alex has Leukemia.
It seems like every time I say Leukemia especially someone I don’t know very well I get emotional. She seemed to feel badly that she had asked. I told her Alex’s hair was grown in quite a bit and said that Alex was doing pretty well. She said she thought Alex just had baby fine hair.
We came home and played some games.
We had dinner after five o’clock. After dinner we went downstairs and exercised.

We went to fit-time at ten thirty. I mailed a parcel to Mom and Dad after I took Alex to his class. Then I went back and sat down. I wrote in the journal for the hour.
We came home and had lunch. After lunch we went to the mall. Alex wanted to buy something with his money. He decided he wanted operation by Playmobile.
We came home and started to put the toy together. It has little people (nurse and a doctor) with all the equipment you would find in an operating room.
Shirley phoned around four thirty and asked if we wanted to meet them at Lions Park. We met them there at 5:45 p.m. Shirley and Monique arrived there at the same time as us.
We didn’t stay very long as it was pretty cold. All of us went to White Spot for dinner.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex was watching TV, I made him breakfast.
Charlie had to go to work again today.
Alex and I went outside, Alex rode his bike while I swept the garage.
The girl next door came over to see Alex. She introduced herself she said her name is Erin and she’s seven years old. I think she’s too old to be playing with Alex. She kept on saying she could take Alex to the backyard but I won’t to be able to see him.
After I finished sweeping, we all went to the backyard. I cleaned up the backyard while they were playing, then we came in.
Erin wanted Alex to come to her house but I told her she could come over to our house. I told her to ask one of her parents.
Erin came back and said it was okay. As soon as they got in she started taking all the toys down. I figured at her age she could put the stuff back after her. I told her it was time for her to go as we were having lunch. She said she wanted to come back, I said well we might be going out later on.
We had our lunch then before two o’clock Erin knocks on the door. I was hoping she wouldn’t come back! It’s pretty hard to say no to a kid that wants to play with your child.
Around two thirty one of Erin’s friends rings the doorbell. So off the two go with Alex wondering what just happened. It was hard for Alex to understand why she had left so suddenly. I just hope she doesn’t make a habit of it.
Charlie came home around three o’clock. We went out for dinner at Shanghai then we went to the Chew’s.
We told Alex to say Gung Hai Fat Choy but at first he wouldn’t say it. Andrea gave him a packet and he got ten dollars. Then Mrs Chew gave him two packets and Alex said Gung Hai Fat Choy.
Mrs Chew said Jolene was at her class. I asked her if Laura was still going. She said oh no she’s pregnant. That sure was a surprise. I never thought they would have another child.
We got home around eight o’clock. My leg is bothering me again so I had a hot bath.

We met Shirley and Brent at McDonald’s for lunch. We came back to our house. Brent and Alex played in the spare room.
Brent had brought a fishing game with him. They played that for awhile and they didn’t fight. Just before they left we noticed that there was writing all over the wall. I asked Alex who did it and he said that he and Brent had done it. I told him they should know better then to write on the wall. I told him if Brent had started to do it he should of come and told me. By what Alex said it really sounded like Brent had started it and Alex followed him since Brent is older.
Shirley cleaned most of it off the wall. I put away some of the toys.
Alex and Brent started running around the house. I told Alex to go into his room that it was not the time to be fooling around when they had done such a bad thing.
They left before five o’clock. Charlie came home shortly afterwards from work. Alex went and hid he thought Charlie was going to yell at him. Charlie wasn’t very mad which really surprised me.
We went to Boston Pizza for dinner. We came home and I got Alex ready for bed at nine o’clock.
Shirley phoned and asked if Charlie was really annoyed. I told her he wasn’t she said Aaron was really annoyed at Brent. They’re punishing Brent pretty hard but two months ago he wrote all over his bed with felt pens.

Alex woke up before seven thirty. I made him breakfast he still likes hot cereal with brown sugar.
We took Alex to the hospital. Dr S wanted to check Alex’s blood count. I told her Alex has a burn on his arm and there is a blister. She asked the chemotherapy nurse if they could do anything but Martina said there’s nothing they can put on it. She said if Alex likes ice on it that was okay.
Dr. S said Alex’s blood count still wasn’t up 100%. So she said that we could increase his medication, 6MP (Mercaptopurine) to ¾ of a pill and Methotrexiate to 3 ½ pills.
After the hospital we went for Dim Sum. We got home before one o’clock. Alex had fallen asleep on the way home but he woke up when we got home. He was pretty upset when we got upstairs. He started to cry for no reason. I decided he really need a special present, I gave him the Fisher Price Birthday cake (fun food). His face really brightened up when he got it. We played with it all afternoon.

As soon as we got in the car Alex asked if we could go out for dinner. We went to McDonald’s. I sat down by the windows, I thought Alex would enjoy watching the cars go by. Alex got mad and said he wanted to sit at another table. Someone had sat down at the table he wanted. I went to a different table but Alex didn’t like that one, he said he wanted to sit at the window!
We went back to the window seat but the woman sitting next to us had moved to the seat Alex was sitting in. So the seats we sat in we couldn’t see outside very well. Alex was mad that he couldn’t see. The woman said she would move and I thanked her.

II woke up at nine o’clock.
I made Alex hot cereal. He really likes the Quaker Oats that cooks in the pot. Alex doesn’t like the variety pack that cooks in a few minutes. He calls it my cereal, since I told him I use to have it with brown sugar when I was a kid.
In the afternoon we went to Pacific Centre then Charlie took us to the Keg at Granville Island for Valentine’s dinner. Alex and I shared steak, lobster and a salad. Alex had mud pie for dessert. Charlie had the special.
Before we went to dinner we went to Mom and Dad’s and got their mail.
We came home after dinner as Charlie has to work tomorrow.
I forgot to give Alex his prednisone in the afternoon so he’ll have to have the evening one at eleven o’clock.
Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I woke him up at eleven o’clock for his medicine. He didn’t complain at all and he went back to sleep almost immediately. I went to bed as well.

Marla brought Lanie over at ten thirty. Lanie didn’t want to stay, she had a fight with Marla in the morning and wanted to stay with her. She kept on telling Marla how much she loved her.
After she came in the house, I had to take Alex’s ice pack off. Alex started to cry and this took Lanie’s mind off of her problems.
Marla came back around noon and stayed for a little while.
I’m still having trouble talking, my voice s a little better but not much.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex’s arm is really bothering him. I put an ice pack on his arm. He seems to be really upset, quite down today. He said he doesn’t want to go to Mini-Sport today.
Dr S phoned in the morning, she said Alex’s blood count was down and to stop 6MP (Mercaptopurine) and Methotrexiate. She said he really shouldn’t have had chemotherapy. I told her about he burn and should I continue putting ice on it. All she said was oh yes but it doesn’t have anything to do with his blood count.
It really upsets me when they act like that, they sure don’t have any bed side manner. It’s also a worry for me anyways not knowing if Alex will be okay. His breathing isn’t normal and then there’s a problem with his arm. Nothing has come up yet but Alex says it’s very painful so it must be. Alex doesn’t complain much and he seems to tolerate a lot of pain.
Marla phoned and asked if we wanted to come over for lunch. We went there around noon.
It really helped Alex to be there and play with Lanie. It made him take his mind off the pain.
We stayed until five o’clock. By the time we left I had almost lost my voice. It sure is hard to communicate without it!

I woke up before seven o’clock, I couldn’t get back to sleep. We have to go to the hospital so I would have to get up at eight o’clock anyways.
Alex woke up not long after I did, I got him his breakfast. Then I had a shower and got dressed.
We left for the hospital at 9:45 a.m. We got there at 10:20 a.m., but we drove around the parking lot until 10:45 a.m. looking for a parking space.
When we got to the clinic everything was very rushed. Dr S asked how Alex was and I told her Alex had a cold and a cough. She said he might not be able to have Chemo today.
Dr. S decided after looking at Alex he would have Chemo today. She asked when he had Methotrexiate last. I told her last Monday, she said well that’ll bring his blood count down.
We went to the waiting room and waited until one o’clock for the Vincristine to come.
Lenore did the I.V. push, when she first put it in Alex said it hurt. Lenore kept putting the medicine in. after she had put almost all of it in Alex got a lump on his arm and it was as hard as a rock. Lenore said Alex will probably get a burn on his arm. She also said Alex would have to have n ice pack on his arm for the next two days. I told her that it would be very difficult since Alex probably wouldn’t do it.
We left the hospital at one thirty. All the way home Alex cried he said he didn’t want the ice pack on his arm. Lenore had put an ice pack on before we left the hospital. I told Alex to take it off it was bothering him. Alex said then I’ll get a burn. I then told him he had to make up his mind whether or not he wanted it on. He cried for quite awhile then he decided he had better keep it on.
Alex was still pretty upset by his ordeal. It really annoys me to think that something like that could happen. Lenore had hurt her back and was in agony, she shouldn’t have been working as far as I was concerned. She seems to have trouble giving Alex his Chemo. It’s funny because Martina doesn’t seem to have any trouble at all. Unfortunately we don’t get to pick which nurse we want.
When we got home Allison phoned she said the kids were having their naps so they would have to come another day.
I gave Alex his present for being so good at the hospital. He’s really good he hardly complains unless it’s very painful
After he got his present he felt much better and it got his mind off his arm. We played with waffle town most of the afternoon.
Charlie had worked the day shift and came home at four o’clock. He left for a retirement party before six o’clock.
I took Alex to McDonalds’s for dinner. I thought he deserved an extra treat. We were halfway through eating dinner when Alex decided he had to go to the bathroom. We had to bring the tray into the bathroom.
They had face painting at McDonald’s that night so Alex had two hearts painted on his face.
We came home and we played with waffle town some more.
Alex went to bed at nine o’clock.

The phone woke me up at eight thirty. It was the hospital they said Dr. S had phoned in sick and she would be in on Wednesday. She had hurt her back. They wanted us to change our appointment form this afternoon to Wednesday morning. I said ok, there’s not much I could say. We have to come in when they say. The lower mainland patients can come in on Mondays and Wednesdays only, the other days are for the patients that live out of town.
I had a shower and got dressed. Then I got Alex dressed and made him his breakfast. We left at 10:15 a.m. for his class.
Marla had phoned earlier to say Lanie didn’t want to go. She asked me if I would tell the teacher that Lanie wouldn’t be back.
Nora phoned before we left, she said Kurt wanted Alex to come over to play. I told her he was going to his class. She said phone me when you get home.
While Alex was in his class I wrote in the journal for an hour.
We came home and I phoned Nora. She said she had a meeting this afternoon. I told her that Kurt could come over. She said she would bring Kurt over before one o’clock.
While the boys played upstairs I went downstairs and cleaned the basement. After I finished I let the boys come downstairs and play. I went upstairs and did the dishes.

Charlie started to move some of the furniture into the kitchen. Then Charlie started to clean the carpet. Alex and I went into our bedroom. Alex said that the machine was too noisy. I opened the patio door as the smell was really strong.
Charlie finished the living room and dining room and started on the bedrooms. Alex and I went down to the basement. Alex was really enjoying playing with the train set.
I went upstairs to have my lunch while Alex was playing downstairs.
Charlie finished cleaning all the carpet in the house and he went to return the carpet cleaner.
We went to the mall in the late afternoon. Alex loves to go to the toy store and look at everything. We went to Wendy’s for dinner afterwards.

I woke up at ten o’clock, I still feel unenergetic. I really didn’t do much in the morning. I tided up the house, made the beds.
Marla phoned in the morning to say Paxton was going in to the doctors. He’s still not able to walk as yet. Lanie wants to go with them so she wouldn’t be coming over today. Marla seemed really down. I phoned her back and asked if she wanted me to come over and keep her company. She said yes she would. Just the way she sounds I can tell she needs someone to talk to. I know for myself it helps having Shirley there and having someone to talk to about everything I felt.
We got there at eleven o’clock and left at twelve thirty. Alex didn’t want to leave he was playing with the train set. Marla told Alex he could borrow it for the weekend. I thought that was really nice of her. Especially since it would have been really difficult to get Alex to leave.
We came home and had lunch. Later I phoned Allison to invite her over but she was busy. We decided next week would be better.
Alex and I went to the mall in the afternoon. We got home before six o’clock.
We opened a parcel that Mom had sent us. I got a sweatshirt and Alex got a t-shit, unfortunately my sweatshirt is too small.

We watched TV after dinner. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at ten o’clock. I’m not feeling too energetic this morning. It’s probably all the things that have happened lately.
I had a shower and got dressed. I tided up the house, got Alex dressed then we had lunch. We left at 12:40 p.m. for Alex’s class. After I had put Alex in his class I went looking for a present for him. I like him to get something when he goes to the hospital.
I got back to the Rec centre at 1:45 p.m. we came home after the class. I phoned Marla to see how everything was and someone else answered the phone. The residence of, first of all I thought it was Marla being funny. I left a message and the person seemed a bit ticked off that I had phoned. It really disturbed me that someone would act that way. She made me feel as though I should be doing more for Marla.
Alex and I played some games and cars in the afternoon.
Shirley came over at five o’clock by herself. She tried to get a hold of Aaron, but Brent hadn’t got back from swimming yet. Shirley left just after six o’clock. She then phoned at 6:15 p.m. to ask if we had dinner yet. She said why don’t we go to McDonald’s.
Shirley and Brent came over and we went in the one car down to McDonalds. We stayed there for an hour or more. Then we came home, Brent and Alex played together for a while.
Mom phoned when we had just got in the door. Shirley had answered the phone since I was downstairs with Alex taking his shoes off. Shirley said Mom said hi how are you. Shirley told her just a minute then when I answered she said who was that?
I had a nice conversation with them, it’s always good to talk to them.
Shirley and Brent left at ten o’clock.
I got Alex ready for be and I went to bed shortly afterwards.

Leukemia Diagnosis; February 2, 1988
I woke up at nine twenty. I had a shower and got dressed. Alex woke up half an hour later.
We left at 10:15 a.m. for Lorrie’s. Alex was very quiet, I think he still hadn’t woken up yet.
Lyle doesn’t seem to like Alex too much. Every time they’re together Lyle always rips whatever toy Alex has in his hand. Today I had enough of Lyle doing this. I told him no, not this time. The other women might think I was too much.
Nora baby sits Lyle but she doesn’t do any disciplining. Nora, Kurt and Lyle left at eleven thirty. After they left all the kids seemed to get along a lot better.
We walked home with Allison and her kids. I invited her over tomorrow. She said Kurt had a class tomorrow but if it was still snowing she wouldn’t go. I said I would phone her.
It had started to snow this morning and it hasn’t stopped yet. When we got into the house Alex said he wanted to shovel the snow. I told him he had to have lunch as he had a gym class at one o’clock. Alex had a temper tantrum and refused to take off his jacket and boots. Alex said he didn’t want to go to gym today he would go another day.
I went upstairs to get Alex clothes ready for gym class. Charlie went downstairs to talk to Alex, he finally convinced Alex to come upstairs and have lunch.
After lunch we went to the gym class. We went down Mariner hill which was pretty slippery. I had a hard time controlling the car. Halfway down the car slid into the curb. Alex said can we do that again, that was fun.
We made it to the gym but not everyone came. Alex was the only boy in the class. One of the instructors said the group is slit into two groups. Alex was the only one in his group that showed up.
Alex really enjoy himself. I could tell how much he enjoyed it by how involved he was. He was really showed a lot of enthusiasm in the class, much more than his other classes.
We came home after the class. We went the long way home. I wanted to go by the bus route to make sure the car could get up the hill.
Charlie had left a note that Marla had phone and wanted a favour. Marla was really upset, she said that Paxton couldn’t walk. When he stands up his legs give out. She said they were taking him to the hospital tomorrow for tests and could I look after Lanie. I told her no problem.
It was upsetting to hear that someone else has to go through the pain of having an ill child. I wish there was something I could say or do. Only time will help them to get over it. I still am not totally over it but things get a little easier.
We had dinner after five o’clock. After dinner we played games and cars.
Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV, it was hard to concentrate on anything. I went to bed after eleven o’clock.
