Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 30, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. I still feel really tired. Alex didn’t wake me up, he was playing with Jay.

Blair said she wanted to go to Metrotown. Paul said he was going to stay home as he was tired of going to the mall. We left around eleven o’clock. I decided to take my own car as I thought Alex might get too tired. I didn’t want a screaming child in the mall!

Jay wanted to come with us. Blair and Holly went ahead and told us to meet them at the 6/49 counter.

We looked around at a few stores after we met them. Then we went for lunch. We shopped for awhile then Alex and I came home.

Alex was feeling pretty tired. He laid down on my bed.

At four o’clock we went to return the movie. I rented Dirty Dancing for tonight.

When we got back Blair, Holly and Jay had come back. They had bought quite a lot of stuff.

Everyone was happy I had rented Dirty Dancing. Blair and Paul said they had heard it was really good.

We went to Chuck E. Cheese for dinner. Jay was really pleased he had asked Paul to take him there. Paul wasn’t too pleased, he said do they take plastic. It seemed that he thought he was suppose to get free meals the whole time they’re here.

We had a good time at Chuck E. Cheese. The kids took Alex around so I had a chance to relax.

Blair talked quite a bit about Jays computer. About how Jay was paying for it and that he had bought a printer since they were down.

We got home around seven o’clock, I got Alex ready for bed. Paul informed me that Charlie wanted to watch the movie and he had to get up early you know! Like give me a break, I really don’t know what he thinks I am. He must think I’m a lousy wife, I’m going to worry about Charlie watching the movie when I’m the one who had to get Alex ready for bed every night.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock then we watched the movie. It was really good, I really enjoyed it. Charlie fell asleep during the movie so I guess he didn’t enjoy it.

I went to bed around midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 29, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex had gotten up earlier but he didn’t wake me up. Charlie’s on dayshift this week. Paul had told Alex to stay in his room and he did.

I was really tired, the party really tired me out. I did a lot of cleaning and preparation. I also wanted the house in good shape when all the company came this week.

Blair was meeting her old boss for lunch. Paul and the kids were going somewhere else. They all went out together.

Alex and I went out to look for a present for Alain. We came back in the afternoon to cook the roast.

Blair and them came back around four o’clock. We had dinner around six o’clock.

Charlie told them he was too tired to go to the hockey game. This really seemed to piss Paul off. They left for the game not long after dinner.

We went and rented a couple of movies. I got Alex ready for bed at eight thirty. We watched the movie.

Blair and them came back around ten thirty.

I went to bed around midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 28, 1988

I woke up around eight o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself. Alex watched TV while I got dressed.

I finished getting the spare room ready. Blair, Paul and the kids arrived before ten o’clock. I helped them bring some of their stuff into the house. Paul wanted me to make some coffee but when he hears that I wasn’t too sure how to make it, he decided to make it. As Paul was making it, he complained that while he was on holidays he had to work. He must of forgotten last summer when we came up. Paul asked me to do the cooking since Blair was working. If anyone needed a holiday or a break it sure was me!

All of them were hungry so Blair made them lunch.

We went to the mall around one o’clock. I was going to come home around two but Alex wanted to stay with his cousins.

We got home around four thirty. They expected me to cook dinner but I had planned to cook a roast and now it was too late.

We decided to order some food, Charlie and Paul went out. They got pizza for the kids and Chinese food for us.

Charlie said Paul paid for the food. Then Paul said, I paid for it as I expect you to make me dinner for the next while. I thought what is with him we never expected them to give us our meals when we go up. We usually buy the food for every other night.

After dinner we watched TV, Paul asked if we wanted to go to a hockey game. I told Charlie we probably shouldn’t go since he just started dayshift. I figured he would be too tired. He said he would be okay. The game is tomorrow night.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. Then we all watched a movie on TV. I went to bed around midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 27, 1988

I woke up a couple of times in the night. I usually do that when I know I have to wake up at a certain time.

I got up at eight o’clock, had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I did some last minute tiding up, then I set up the table for the party. I started to blow up the balloons to put on the banister. Charlie and Alex finished while I went and rented a movie for the party and bought some film.

Blair, Paul and the kids came around noon. We left shortly afterwards for McDonald’s. We had to wait awhile for them to clean up but we were early.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Ryan brought Alain but he didn’t talk to us at all, I found that a bit weird. Marla told Ryan she would take Alain home.

The hostess asked if they could take some pictures of the party for a promo. They said they would give us a 5X7.

We all ordered our food and the kids played at the end of the caboose. After the kids had finished their lunch they went on a tour of the kitchen. The kids went to the playroom for about ten minutes then we came home.

We looked for Blair and Paul but they had disappeared. We decided to go on ahead, we told Holly and Jay to stay by the car. They came back not long after we got back.

Laura, Paul, Andrea and the kids didn’t come back to the house. They said they had to go somewhere else. That really annoyed me, they seem to do this every year. They always have to go somewhere afterwards.

The kids played for awhile. Blair said oh Nancy when she saw all Alex’s toys. I said I know I spoil him. Then I walked away, Marla seemed quite taken back by her comment.

Then I got the birthday cake ready. We sang Happy Birthday and Alex blew out his candles.

At McDonald’s Brent said he didn’t want any cake but when he saw that it was a Ghostbusters’s cake he wanted to eat the head.

After we had our cake Alex opened his presents. Alex got houses from Kurt (Allison); t-shirt and two cars from Kurt (Nora); track for the wooden train from Lanie; rocket hockey, three different types of art design, a bag and bubbles from Brent; yoyo and activity book from Carrie and Robert; Lego and a cassette from Alain; a big truck from Monique (Andrea); and a time jammer and Ducktales puzzle from Blair, Paul, Holly and Jay.

After Alex had opened all his presents Charlie brought up our present. We gave Alex a two wheeler with training wheels. Alex was really happy that he got his BMX bike. The other kids thought it was nice.

I had rented a movie but the kids were more interested in playing. The mothers enjoyed the movie more! I had rented Lady and the Tramp.

Most of them left around four o’clock.

We went out to dinner with Shirley and Monique. Brent had gone with Aaron to a Easter concert.

After dinner we went home, Shirley went home to put Monique to bed.

Alex went to bed before eight o’clock. I tided up the house, it took me a long time to clean up. I also had to take all the toys out of the spare room and get it ready for when Blair, Paul and the kids come tomorrow.

I went to bed around midnight.

I woke up at eight o’clock. Shirley had asked us to baby sit her kids. She said she would bring them over at nine o’clock and pick them up at twelve o’clock. I really had a lot planned to do today to get ready for Alex’s party tomorrow. I find it really hard to tell her I can’t.

Shirley phoned at nine to say she would be over in about an hour. I really don’t know what’s going on. Shirley came at ten o’clock and left. It gave me a chance to get to know Monique. Brent and Alex played in the spare room.

Shirley phoned at twelve thirty to say she was at a friends house and was staying for coffee then going to look for a present for Alex. She said she wanted to know if it was okay. Well she did say until noon and I had told Shirley I had a lot of cleaning in the afternoon. I told Shirley we had to go to Mom and Dad’s to pick up the mail. She said she would come soon then and not go to the store for the rest of Alex’s present.

I found it a bit weird that she would ask us to baby sit while she told me she was looking for a present for Alex. I would never ask her to baby sit Alex while I got Brent or Monique a present.

Shirley came before one o’clock and left right away. We left as well to pick up the mail from Mom and Dad’s. Then we went and picked up the cake and came home.

I started to vacuum the house, Charlie brought a take-out home. We had dinner, after dinner I washed the floors.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock but he didn’t fall asleep until ten o’clock.

Alex wanted to draw pictures for each child that was coming to his birthday party.

I did some more cleaning up, as I didn’t want to do much cleaning tomorrow.

I went to bed around midnight.

He said that since Alex had Methotrexiate on Monday that’s probably why he was so tired. I also told Dr. W about the pain in Alex’s arm. Dr. W said that because of the burn from chemotherapy Alex’s tissue was burnt and that could be causing some pain around his bone.

After the doctors, we went to have lunch then we took Alex to his class.

Shirley and the kids came at five o’clock. Brent and Aaron left to go swimming at five thirty.

We left at six o’clock for McDonald’s, Aaron and Brent met us there after swimming.

As soon as we got our food Alex said he had to go to the bathroom. Luckily Shirley and Monique were there so we could leave our food there. This is the third time he’s done this while we have been out.

While we were having dinner Monique was terrible. She acted like a little brat and Shirley just ignored it. She asked me if I did the same. I told her I couldn’t, that it really bothers me. I don’t think it’s right for people to let their children to continue to cry.

Alex and I went to the playroom. Shirley and Monique joined us later, then Aaron and Brent came.

At eight o’clock Shirley, Brent, Alex and I came home. Aaron and Monique went home. They stayed until nine o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 7, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock, I had breakfast, had a shower and got dressed. Alex had gotten himself dressed, and Charlie had given him his breakfast.

We left after ten o’clock for the fit-time class. I sat in the car and read while Alex was in his class. I came down with another cold on Saturday, so I’m not feeling that great.

We came home and had lunch. Then we got ready to go to the hospital. Alex wanted to have Kurt over but we couldn’t. He was pretty mad about that.

We left for the hospital and got there after one o’clock. There were quite a few people there, but it wasn’t too busy.

Alex didn’t know he was having chemo, he though he was just going for a blood test. I told him, he would have to have chemo and explained what the nurse would do, that it was important he keep his arm really still and not move it. Alex said he couldn’t keep from moving his arm. I told him I had a special prize for him at home if he could be good and keep his arm still. Alex said he would try and do it. He was excited that he was getting a prize.

Dr. S asked us to come into the room. She said Alex’s blood count was up and that the 6MP (Mercaptopurine) would go back to the original dosage of 1 pill and ¾ pill alternating. She also said to increase Methotrexiate to four pills. Dr. S said Alex would be having chemo.

Alex and I went to the pharmacy then we came back to the clinic. On the way back we got some Jell-O.

Martina did the chemo, Heather helped to hold Alex’s arm. Martina said Alex has a fat vein but she was having trouble getting it. Alex cried a little bit but he didn’t move his arm. It was done very quickly and then we went home.

Alex fell asleep on the way home, but when I picked him up and put him on his bed he woke up.

I gave Alex his prize, a Lego set. We played with it most of the afternoon.

I started to cook dinner at four o’clock, we ate at five o’clock.

After dinner we went downstairs to exercise.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty. I got Alex his breakfast then I gave him a shower. Then I had a shower and got dressed.

We took Alex to the clinic for a blood test. It was so busy, there wasn’t anywhere to sit down. We went and sat out in the hall. Alex had his Jell-O then we went back inside. We had gotten there before eleven o’clock and Alex didn’t have his blood test until after twelve o’clock. Then we had to wait for Dr. S to talk to us. She said Alex’s blood count had come up but it wasn’t enough to put him back fully on his medicine. She said change his Methotrexiate to Monday. I told her it was already on Monday, she said that was okay keep it on Monday. We left the clinic. In the area by the elevators they were selling cookies. We bought some from the clinic section.

The we went to McDonald’s for lunch. We got home before two o’clock.

Alex and I played cars, games and wrestling.

I was feeling pretty down, it really worries me when Alex’s blood count is not high enough.

Marla phoned after five o’clock, she wondered how Alex was doing. Then she told me that Paxton does have Arthritis but it’s a lesser strain that they first thought. She said she was quite relieved that it wasn’t so bad. There’s nothing the doctors can do, they’ll give Paxton pain killers when it gets really painful.

We had dinner before six o’clock. Then we went downstairs and exercised.

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
