I woke up at ten o’clock, I sure was tired and still am. Don’t know why but I sure have been lately. Alex and I had breakfast then I talked to Mom. I asked her if she thought it would be alright if Alex and I went up to see Dad in the hospital. She said if should be alright now, then she asked me when I would be going up. I said I probably would go after lunch. Mom said why don’t we go together. We decided that I would pick her up just after twelve o’clock.
Alex and I got ready then we had our lunch and left to get Mom. The traffic wasn’t too bad going over there but when we got to the University they were having some kind of a race. It took us quite awhile before we could go. Dad was really happy to see Mom, as soon as she got there Dad held her hand. He didn’t let go for most of the time we were there. Alex and I went downstairs to get something to eat and drink and to buy Dad a newspaper. After we came back to Dad’s room Alex said that he was tired. He laid on me and fell asleep. He sure was heavy. Alex slept for about an hour. We left when Dad got his dinner, we stopped at McDonald’s for dinner. Mom suggested we go there which was nice of her. Alex got to go to the kitchen to see how French fries were made, he was happy about that. When we had finished eating we went to the playroom. We got to Mom’s around seven o’clock, Mom asked us to come in for awhile. Alex had asked if we could go to the mall and buy a toy but I told him maybe later that we were going into Grandma’s for awhile. Mom was really relieved that Dad had gotten through the surgeries. It’d been a terrible strain on her especially since Dad had gotten so depressed. We left around nine o’clock, when we got home I got Alex ready for bed. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

The alarm woke me up just after seven o’clock. Alex goes to gym class today and it starts at nine thirty. Before I had my shower I went to see if Alex was awake yet, he was just waking up. I told Alex I was going to have a shower. After my shower I helped Alex to get dressed then I got dressed myself. We had breakfast then it was time to go to Alex’s class. Alex was pretty excited about going to the class, he wondered if Cindy would be his teacher.
When we got to the class most of the kids were all ready there. The teacher said that her name was Joan and that she wanted the parents to leave as it was much easier on the children. I changed Alex into a pair of shorts and he took off his socks. Then I left to do some errands and came back. I read until it was time for me to go and get Alex. Alex said he really enjoyed the class, he said that it was much better than the other gym class he was going to.
After the class Alex asked if he could go to Toy city to see if they had a Halloween costumes yet. They still hadn’t put all of them out yet. Alex wanted to look around the store but I told him that we had done that yesterday.
After we got home it was no time before Marla and the kids came over for lunch. The house wasn’t that tidy but I didn’t have too much time to do it this morning, hopefully Marla didn’t mind. Alex wasn’t that good today, he did a lot of complaining. He seems so much better when we go over to their house. It’s also hard to keep Paxton entertained, he just seems to go from one thing to another. Paxton has four stitches in his chin, he fell at McDonalds and the foot rest went into his chin. Their nanny took him to a doctor and had him take a look.
After lunch the kids went outside to play in the sandbox and the swings. They left at three thirty, Alex watched his show after they left.
We had dinner after five o’clock. After dinner Alex went outside to play with his friends. Mom phoned when she got home, she said that Dad’s surgery had been changed form six o’clock to three o’clock. So by that time she got there they were getting Dad ready to go for surgery and then she came home.
Mom then phoned back later and said that Dad had phoned her to tell her that everything was okay. She said Dad sure was funny, he said I sure love you Mom and I’m getting all sniffly. Mom said if you’re not doing anything come on down. I took it that she wanted some company, we went down as soon as Alex had gathered up his toys. Alex played for awhile then he laid down on the couch, but then Alex said he was hungry so Mom got him something to eat. We left around ten o’clock, Mom had quite a few phone calls while we were there.
I got Alex ready for bed then I watched TV and went to bed.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; September 28, 1988
I woke up at nine o’clock. Mom phoned shortly afterwards, she was really upset. She said that Dad had phoned and was really depressed. He is on a blood thinner that they use to kill rats. They have to use it to thin down his blood so it doesn’t clot. He said to Mom that he feels like a mouse ready to die. The doctor had come in to see him this morning and said that he didn’t know when he would be having his surgery, maybe on Friday but he wasn’t scheduled.
Mom said she wanted to go to the hospital right away and she wondered if I would look after Geordie. I told her that I would. It sure was upsetting to hear their conversation, I didn’t know if there was any meaning to what Dad was saying or he was just depressed and wanted to come home. We have been through quite a bit lately I don’t think I could handle much more.
Mom came over around ten o’clock and Geordie stayed with us. Geordie seemed quite happy to see us, he’s probably glad to see someone else. Mind you I had to keep calling him upstairs or else he would just sit by the front door and cry.
After lunch we went to Alex’s class. I thought maybe he would complain about being left alone in the class but he was fine. After the class we went to Toy City to see if they had any costumes for Halloween but they didn’t have them out just yet.
When we got home Geordie was sure glad to see us. I phoned Jeff to see if Mom had phoned him to tell him about Dad but Mom hadn’t. I told him that I still had a cold or I would go up to the hospital. Jeff was quite surprised to hear that Dad was so depressed. He said he had talked to him last night and he seemed to be okay. Jeff said he was going up today but he would go earlier and spend more time with him.
I also phoned Joan to ask the same thing and she said she hadn’t talked to Mom either. She said she knew the woman who booked the surgeries and that she would give her a call to see if something could be done.
We ate dinner at six o’clock. Mom came around seven o’clock, she said that Dad was doing much better. She said that when she got there Dad told her that he had to talk to himself and stop being so silly. I was really glad to hear that he was feeling better.
After Mom had left and I had gotten Alex ready for bed I phoned Dad. When he first started to talk his speech was quite slurry. At first I thought he was joking around, then I realized he was serious. He said I’m going to have my sloperation tomorrow you know. The more he talked the more his speech improved. Dad said that the nurse had given him a shot because he had an allergic reaction to the blood thinner. He said it sure makes me feel drowsy. Then he told me that the nurse was going to give him another shot at ten o’clock. He wasn’t suppose to have it until one o’clock but they didn’t want to wake him up so they were going to give it to him earlier. I didn’t like that at all, especially when the drug makes him so drowsy anyways. Then he told me that they were going to give him a sleeping pill. He said I’ll be lucky if I can wake up. Then he added until noon. I said don’t start talking like that. Then he told me how depressed he had been this morning and how he had to talk himself out of it.
After I had talked to Dad I phoned Mom to find out if she had talked to him. Mom said she had and we both agreed that Dad sure was slurry.
I watched TV then I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty. I made Alex and myself breakfast then I got dressed. I cleaned the bathrooms and cleaned all the floors. I had a shower and got dressed by this time it was lunch time.
After lunch I tided up the house. Alex has taken to bringing a lot of his toys into the living room while he watches TV and making a big mess.
Evelyn from Children’s Hospital phoned to tell me that she would have to cancel our appointment for tomorrow as Dr. S was sick with the flu. Evelyn asked us to come in next Tuesday afternoon. I asked if Dr. S would like Alex to see another doctor and Evelyn said no that they were too booked up this week. I said well Alex has to have a LP, how can it be done in the afternoon? Evelyn said that they were sharing the facilities with another clinic so they had been doing them in the afternoon. I said okay then we’ll see you next Tuesday.
Alex went to Kurt’s house at four o’clock. Kurt had phoned and asked Alex if he could come over to play. Kurt said he couldn’t come over to Alex’s house to play. That was good since when Kurt asked Alex if he could play Alex said can you come over to my house. I said to Alex don’t say that maybe Kurt wants you to come over to his house. Then Kurt said I can’t come over but you can come over here. I thought maybe Daniel was looking after Kurt but it was Nora who said that. When I took Alex over Nora waited until the boys were upstairs to tell me that she had told Kurt that he couldn’t go over to Alex’s house that she thought it would help Alex.
I phoned Shirley when I got home, she asked us to come over after dinner. She said she would be over at the house looking after the kids. A very different set-up but it seems to be okay.
I went to get Alex at five o’clock. Nora said that Alex could stay longer but I told her that we had to go out.
Alex had said earlier that he wanted to go to McDonald’s. He seemed so upset that I figured we might as well. Afterwards we went to the library to photo copy Alex’s schedule for the upcoming months. We had to go to two libraries since at the first one the photo copier was out of order. Then we went to Shirley’s, Aaron answered the door. He seemed so surprised to see us that I said I guess Shirley didn’t tell you we were coming. He said no I knew you were coming.
The were just finishing dinner, then Aaron left to go to bible study. Brent and Alex played in Brent’s room for awhile. They went down to the basement and jumped on an old mattress down there. Then Alex asked if they could watch his tape that he had brought. After watching the tape they played upstairs for awhile.
Monique sure was cute, she asked me if she could sit with me and have a cuddle. Shirley put her to bed around eight o’clock. We left around nine o’clock.
I got Alex ready for bed when we got home and also gave him his medicine. I gave him his Methotrexiate since we aren’t’ going to the hospital this week.
I watched TV and went to bed at eleven thirty, just as I’m getting into bed I heard Alex crying. I went into his room and he said that his legs hurt. I gave him Tempra for the pain but Alex still complained. I took him into our bed then I got an ice cube and put it where he said it hurt. We finally got to sleep around midnight. The only way Alex would go to sleep was for me to hold him.

I woke up at nine thirty. I feel pretty tired these days. I made Alex and myself breakfast. Then I had a shower and got dressed. I did housework today, like the laundry, and cleaning up the house so I would be able to vacuum later this afternoon.
After lunch I vacuumed the house. Alex watched TV, I still don’t want him to play with the other kids just yet. We have to go to the hospital this week and I’m hoping that he’ll feel better by then.
We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner we watched tv and played with Alex’s play mobile. Charlie is still on afternoon sift so it’s just Alex and myself again.
Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I phoned Dad once Alex was in bed to see how he was doing. Dad said he was doing okay, that he was able to get around but he was waiting to find out when he had to have the next surgery. He said that he didn’t want to go home before it was done. He thought that would be harder just waiting and thinking every time the phone rang whether or not it would be the doctor to tell him that he wanted him to come in for the surgery. He said but on the other hand it’s hard waiting in the hospital, knowing he’ll have to have the next surgery done.
I also talked to Mom and she said she hopes that Dad will have the next surgery very soon. She doesn’t want Dad to come home before the next surgery as she thinks it will be harder for him to come back for it again.

This morning I was woken up at two o’clock by Alex coughing. I got up and gave him some medicine and went back to bed.
I then woke up at ten o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed. Then I had something to eat before we went out. We went to the Brick, Charlie wanted to look at bedroom furniture. He said he wasn’t going to buy anything but just look. I want a new bedroom suite, I’m tired of the old one. I’ve given up asking Charlie to find one he likes. We actually found one we both like and Charlie actually bought it, that sure was a surprise! We can’t get it until October 8 as the headboard is out of stock.
After that we went to K-Mart, where I found a jogging suit for Alex. When I went to pay for it the cashier said you can’t buy it the top and bottom aren’t the same size. Then she went to ring in the person from behind me. So I said what happens now and she said you’ll have to look for the proper size. That really annoyed me, it’s as if I had switched it with another set. I looked but there weren’t any more 6X’s left. I came back and told her that and she said you still can’t have it, it could be anywhere on the floor. I felt like saying so another words you don’t want me to buy it. Then she tells another clerk to explain about mix matched clothing to me. This clerk was nicer but I told her that I couldn’t find another one. She then phoned for another clerk who goes to search for it. They ended up letting me have the suit mix matched!
We came home and I started to cook dinner. Charlie went down to Mom and Dad’s and cut their grass. He came back a couple hours later, he said it was hard to cut because it was so long.
We had dinner at five thirty. Then Charlie left to go visit Dad. Alex and I watched TV and played a board game. Charlie came back at eight o’clock. I got Alex ready for bed and Charlie read him a story.

After two o’clock we went out shopping and went to a Won-Ton House for dinner on Kingsway. We came home afterwards and watched TV.
Mom phoned when she got back from the hospital, she said that they had Dad up walking around today. They don’t want him walking too much just yet. Mom gave me Dad’s phone number and said if I had time to give him a call. I phoned him after I had talked to Mom. Dad said they keep asking him if he had smoked, they said that smoking is one of causes to the problem in his vein. I found that quite surprising, I would never have thought that smoking would damage a persons veins.

I woke up at eight thirty, I can hardly breathe which makes it pretty difficult to sleep at night. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. I let Alex watch TV before I got him to have a shower. I helped him get dressed as he doesn’t want to get dressed by himself.
The hospital had left a message on Wednesday to phone them about Alex’s appointment for next Tuesday. I phoned yesterday, Evelyn said that his appointment would have to be changed to Wednesday as they were over booked. I told her that we couldn’t as Alex was going to his first class that day. Evelyn said that it would have to be changed as Dr. S had to cover the ward that day. So another words they were phoning to tell me that the appointment was changed and that was final!
We didn’t do much today as Alex and I are both not feeling that good. Charlie went to visit Dad before he went to work, so he left at twelve o’clock. Alex wanted to go to the mall but I wasn’t feeling good enough to go anywhere.
Mom dropped Geordie off at one o’clock. Then she went to the hospital. I had sent Alex to bed for a nap since he was so cranky. Alex woke up at four o’clock and was surprised to see Geordie here. Alex is quite annoyed that we can’t see Dad but it’s better this way. We don’t want to give him a cold!
I invited Mom to stay for dinner when she got back from the hospital. She said it was too late but I told her that I would have something ready for her when she got here.
I started to cook dinner around five o’clock. I was already cooking Macaroni and Cheese, when I realized I didn’t have enough Macaroni. I made enough just for Alex, I had to make something else for Mom and myself. We ended up having chicken, baked potatoes and corn.
Mom came after seven o’clock and we had dinner about half an hour later. Mom left at eight o’clock, she was pretty tired.
Alex and I watched TV, we have been watching the Olympics all week which sure is exciting. Alex went to bed at ten o’clock. I watched some more tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up after ten o’clock. I had woke up quite a number of time in the night. I have a cold now too.
Alex had already gotten up. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
I phoned Mom to let her know that Charlie was going up to see Dad around noon and if she wanted Charlie to take Dad up anything. She said no and that she would be going up around two o’clock. I said that I wouldn’t be going up since I have a cold and I hoped that Dad didn’t mind.
After that I didn’t do that much, had my lunch and watched TV and typed in the journal. Later in the afternoon Alex said he wasn’t feeling that good and could we go to the mall and get him a prize. I said we could go to Woodward’s since they had a sale on toys. Alex said so what if there isn’t anything I like. I told him if there wasn’t anything we might go somewhere else.
We got a few things for Alex at Woodward’s, not all for today and then we came home. We both watched TV and had a snack. Then at six o’clock Alex asked when I was going to tell him it was time to go to bed. I said well if your tired why don’t you go now. By the time we did his story and I got him ready for bed it was seven o’clock.
Blair phoned to see how Dad was and I told her everything I knew. She was glad that he was doing okay. After I got off the phone I finished putting Alex’s toys away. Alex was still awake, he wanted some toys to play with. I checked a little while later and he was fast asleep.
I phoned Mom to see if she was home yet and she was. Mom said Dad fell asleep quite a few times which is quite normal. Dad said that the nurses asked him to sit on the chair while they made his bed. While he was sitting there he felt dizzy and asked Charlie to hold onto him. Mom said the nurses realized what had happened and quickly changed the bed and got Dad back into bed.
Mom said that Dad’s leg is really swollen and that they would be giving Dad a sleeping pill tonight.
After I got off the phone I typed in the journal. I’m going to watch TV and then go to bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex was already up and having breakfast. He still has a bad cough and cold, I gave him some more cough medicine then I had my breakfast and had a shower.
Mom phoned while I was in the shower. I phoned her back and she said she was going back up to the hospital later in the afternoon. It seemed to me that she wanted to go with me, so I asked her if she would like me to pick her up or if she would rather go by herself. She said if I was going to go later in the afternoon that would be fine. I told her it didn’t matter to me when I went. Actually I thought if would be better to go later on as Charlie had planned to go there around noon. I told Mom I would pick her up and then asked what time she would like to go, Mom said three o’clock would be fine.
Patrick came over around eleven o’clock but I told Alex he couldn’t play with anyone today as he has a cold. When Alex went down to the door he got mad, he said he couldn’t play and slammed the door. I told him to open the door and I told Patrick that Alex had a cold and couldn’t play. Alex sure was mad at me but he just isn’t up to playing with the other kids, he needs to rest.
I tided up the house and vacuumed then I had lunch. Joan phoned to ask about Dad so I told her that he would be having surgery. There really wasn’t a great deal for me to tell her as Dad was having tests today.
Alex and I left for the library after two o’clock then we went to pick Mom up. Mom said that Dad was to have surgery at eight o’clock tonight. They sure don’t fool around.
I told Mom that Charlie had phoned and that Dad wasn’t in his room that they had taken him down for tests at eleven thirty and that he would be back at one thirty.
We got to the hospital after three o’clock, closer to four o’clock. We had quite the time finding his room, when we got upstairs we couldn’t remember which room Dad was in since we had gone to the gift shop before going to his room. Mom asked the nurse which room Dad was in but she told us that he was down having an ultra sound. We went into his room anyways and Jeff was there fast asleep.
Jeff said he just got there when they had to take Dad down for the ultra sound. He said that Charlie went down with them and then left. Jeff said it was twenty minutes ago that Dad went down. Jeff left shortly afterwards, he said he had to get back to work.
Dad came back up and he looks good considering what’s wrong with him. He said that his leg is still quite painful. Last night he said that the nurse gave him morphine three times before it finally took. We stayed for an hour then we went for dinner. Someone came to shave him so we figured that was a good time for us to go.
We went to a small restaurant on tenth, a English restaurant which was really quite good. We got back at seven o’clock, Dad was glad to see us. He looked nervous about the operation, he kept on asking what time it was.
We left at eight o’clock, they hadn’t brought Dad down for his operation when we left. The nurse said she didn’t know when he would be going down.
We took Mom home, she talked a great deal on the way home. It’s such an upsetting time, she needs to talk get her feelings out.
Alex fell asleep on the way home so I couldn’t go in, I made sure though that Mom was okay. We came home and wouldn’t you know it Alex woke up. I got him ready for bed but he didn’t go to sleep until after Charlie got home. I went to bed at eleven thirty and Alex had come into bed with me but Charlie sent him to his own bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex woke up shortly afterwards, I gave him a shower and got him dressed. Alex had fruit cup for breakfast.
Charlie went to the dentist at nine thirty. I got ready to go to Marla’s for lunch. When Alex found out that we were going there he told me to hurry up and get dressed. He said we can’t be late. We left at eleven o’clock for their place.
Lanie was excited to see us, Paxton wasn’t too sure who we were. We haven’t seen them too much lately. Lanie and Alex had a good time playing together. They didn’t even fight!
Marla said she found a Nanny for the kids for when she goes to work on Monday and Fridays. We stayed until five o’clock and came home to have dinner. Alex didn’t eat very much, his cold is still bothering him. Alex went outside and played with Kurt for awhile then he came in because he said it was too cold outside.
Mom phoned at seven o’clock, she said that she had just come back from the hospital. Dad has lumps behind both his legs at the knee. The doctor said he had to do some tests and would probably have to have surgery. I asked Mom if she wanted some company tonight, she was really upset.
We stayed for a few hours, Alex was feeling pretty tired. There really wasn’t too much we could do or say to help. Mom said that Dad hadn’t slept too well the night before because of the pain in his leg. He said it was okay when he sat up. So Mom told him to go downstairs and sleep in the chair. Dad did finally get to sleep after going downstairs.
We got home at nine thirty, I got Alex ready for bed. I watched TV and went to bed at ten thirty.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had breakfast and got dressed by that time Alex woke up, he had a shower and got dressed with my help. Then I made him breakfast, he wanted fruit cup. Alex isn’t feeling too good today, he has a cold.
Ales said he wanted to have some medicine for his cold. He wanted the cough medicine that Lanie has which he wouldn’t take before. He must really be sick if he wants to take that medicine.
Alex watched his tape on TV while I cleaned all the furniture. Charlie went out shopping around eleven. I finished cleaning then I had a shower and got dressed.
After lunch Patrick came over and asked Alex if he could play. Alex asked him to come in without asking me first.
Later in the afternoon I typed in the journal. I had done the dishes and tided up the house previous to that.
Morgan phoned before four o’clock to ask if Patrick was still there. It annoyed me that he always seems to be here. Morgan said that Patrick had asked if he could go to Alex’s house to play. She said she had told him that he could but that he couldn’t play outside as he didn’t have a jacket. I thought she sure has a nerve sending her child down here and not even asking if it was okay with me. Morgan said when you’ve had enough of him send him home. Then she told me to phone her when I send him home.
I sent Patrick home after Ghostbusters were over. Then I started to make dinner. Alex didn’t want anything to eat. He probably shouldn’t have had anyone over today.
I got Alex ready for bed at seven o’clock. It took Alex about half an hour to do his stuff in the bathroom. Then I read him a story and Alex was asleep in no time.

I did some work around the house in the morning and early part of the afternoon. Later in the afternoon we went out to the mall. Then we came home and I started to cook dinner. We ate around five o’clock.
At seven o’clock I phoned Mom to see if they would be home tonight, then we went down to their house. They had been working in the garden, they moved some of the trees that were in the front window garden to the hill in the front. They both looked exhausted especially Dad. He looked very tired like he had been doing too much all at once. We came home around nine o’clock. I got Alex ready for bed. I watched TV then I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex was already up and asked me to get him some breakfast. I made breakfast for us both then I had a shower and got dressed. I then gave Alex a shower and got him dressed then it was time to leave for the doctor’s office.
We saw Dr. C, she asked if Alex was doing any better. She wanted to know if I was getting out and if Alex was upset about it or not. I told her that now Alex wouldn’t even go to one of his friends house’s when he was invited. Dr. C said that it sounded like Alex was suffering from separation anxiety. She said that we would just have to take it easy for awhile. Hard as it must seem.
We also talked about my problem with my scalp and she gave me a prescription. We went to London Drugs after the doctor’s, we bought my prescription and few more items and it was $22!
We came home around noon and had our lunch. After lunch Alex played outside with his friends. I did some work around the house.
Charlie came home around four o’clock. We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner Alex went outside with his friends and rode his bike. He came in at seven thirty and I got him ready for bed. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. After Alex had watched TV for awhile I told him he had to have a shower and get dressed.
I did some housework then it was time for lunch. After lunch Alex went outside and played. He plays mostly with Patrick since the other kids are in school. Kurt goes ever day now to Kindergarten. All the kids are still coming to our house since Alex won’t go to there’s, I’m going to have to asked the doctor about that. It’s hard having the other kids here every day and I think Alex needs to be away form me sometime during the day.
Charlie got home at four o’clock, he’s working day shift today or I should say this week. I left at four thirty and told Charlie that nobody could come inside since Alex had been invited over to Kurt’s house and he wouldn’t go. I went to the rec centre to register Alex for some classes. I got there at four forty five and I was at the beginning of the second row. It was hard sitting there, I brought my book but it was hard reading. I thought I was going to fall asleep, I walked around a bit and then they started registration. I got home around seven thirty and when I got home there were two kids in the house besides Alex. I was really annoyed, I said to Charlie I told you Alex couldn’t have any kids in the house. He said he forgot and Alex said the same thing. Charlie sent them all home.
I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower, got dressed, gave Alex a shower, and helped him get dressed.
We left at ten thirty, Alex and myself are going to Kurt Andrew’s birthday party. Kurt had come over yesterday with his birthday invitation. I had gone out yesterday afternoon and gotten his present. Nora said that Kurt had been upset when he had brought his invitation over when we were on holiday, it was probably the first day that we were away. She said from then on Kurt had come over every day or phoned to see if we were home.
Alex had a pretty good time, he wasn’t watching what he was doing and dropped his hamburger on the floor. Nora went and got him another one.
There were all boys except for Toni, and were they ever noisy. We left at twelve thirty and came home. Alex thought the party was much too short. He played with Patrick when we got home. They played most of the afternoon and then Kurt and Timothy came over. I sent them all home at five o’clock.
We had dinner at six o’clock. After Alex went outside and played with his friends. I called him in at seven o’clock and got him ready for bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

We all woke up at ten o’clock, it was nice to have a good sleep in, in our own beds. We had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. I gave Alex a shower and helped him get dressed.
Mom, Dad, Geordie and Kelly arrived around eleven o’clock. They had come to water the plants, they didn’t realize that we would be home. They didn’t stay long. Mom phoned later and asked us if we would like to come for dinner.
I tided up the house while Alex went outside and played. We went down to Mom and Dad’s at four o’clock. We brought them back a sovereign form Coombs, it was an embroidery that had an R.V. on it. Alex brought some of the stuff he got on his holiday to show them. We came home around nine o’clock, we were still pretty tired form the holiday. Alex went to bed when we got home. We watched TV and went to bed around eleven o’clock.

I woke up at seven thirty and realized Alex needed to be changed. I let him sleep on my side. Alex said he didn’t like me sleeping with Pa, that it wasn’t fair. I told him that he should go back to sleep as we had a lot of things to do today. Alex never did go back to sleep, sure hope he’s not a grouch today!
We decided last night that we should leave after dinner tonight. It just seems like such a waste to pay for another night in a motel. So we packed up our stuff then we got ready to go. Alex had a fruit cup for breakfast then we left the motel.
We went to a small mall in the downtown area and had breakfast. Then we did some shopping. We also went to the tourist stores. Alex said he was getting tired so we went for a drive.
We had lunch at a restaurant that Allison recommended called the Dutch Bakery. It was crowded when we got there but we were able to get a table not long after we got there. After lunch we went for a drive around the waterfront, Alex finally fell asleep thank goodness. He sure was getting cranky.
I forgot that before lunch we had gone to another cottage called Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Allison said they had been there and that we should go. It was alright but nothing in comparison to Fable Cottage.
After our drive we went back to the tourist area and looked at all the shops. Then it was time to go for dinner. It took us quite a long time to find the restaurant. Charlie wanted to go for Chinese food, he finally went into the mall and found a phone book to look it up. We got there and then unfortunately they put us in the smoking section which we didn’t realize until it was almost time to go. Alex said when someone lights a cigarette that’s dirty they shouldn’t be doing that in here go and tell them to put it out. We told Alex that you can’t say that put he was still mad.
We then drove to the ferry, Alex was glad that we were going home. I guess he misses his friends and all his toys, and probably most of all his bike! We made it onto the ferry, there sure were a lot of people getting onto the ferry. The parking lot seemed to be almost full. It was nice going across the water at that hour, we caught the seven o’clock ferry. It was just starting to get dark as we came in we could see the lights of the city.
When we were driving home we took the wrong turn off, which really annoyed me. We got home after nine probably nine thirty, or ten o’clock. I started to unpack right away, I don’t like to leave it until the next day.
Alex went to bed the same time we did which was eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Charlie and Alex were already up. We got fruit cup last night so Alex was able to have one this morning. We packed up our stuff and went to a different motel. It’s called Stay’n Save, Charlie can’t figure out why since it’s not that cheap but it’s really nice inside. Well decorated and clean, I’ll be able to sleep well anyways.
After lunch we went to the Fable cottage, we had been there when Alex was 1 ½ years old and he really enjoyed it. This time Alex liked it but I didn’t think he was excited as he had been before.
After the Fable cottage we went to Sealand. Alex enjoyed that a lot better. The shows were really good especially the seals, they’re almost comedians. After Sealand we drove along the water then we went back to the motel to rest before dinner. We decided to try a restaurant that Allison recommended, it’s Italian food so we thought they would have pizza. When we got there is wasn’t on the menu when we finally got to sit down. We had a bit of a wait since the restaurant was full. Alex was really mad that they didn’t have pizza and he said he wouldn’t eat anything else. We told him since we had promised him pizza we would get it later on. Alex had a little bit of mine then he feel asleep on my lap. By the time we got to the car Alex woke up. Then we went to the mall.
While we were in Woodward’s, I saw a Ghostbusters lunchbox. I made the mistake of saying to Alex look at this isn’t that neat. Alex said he wanted one but we said he had enough toys for one holiday. Alex was pretty upset about that. On the way back to the car Alex started to cry, I asked him what was the matter. He said that every kids was going to ask their Mama for a Ghostbusters lunchbox and there wouldn’t be any left for when he could get one. Charlie said let’s just go and get him one. So Charlie and Alex went back and bought one while I went into the food floor at Woodward’s.
We got back to the motel before nine o’clock and watched TV. Alex went to bed at ten o’clock. I watched TV some more and did my crossword puzzle then I went to bed.

I woke up at eight o’clock and had a shower and got dressed. Alex woke up shortly afterwards and said he didn’t feel very feel. Alex said he wanted a fruit cup for breakfast, which we didn’t have. Alex was very upset about that. Charlie phoned the restaurant in the motel and they said they had fruit salad.
We went to the restaurant for breakfast and Alex was happy since he could order hot cereal and fruit salad.
After breakfast we checked out of the motel and drove to Victoria. We first stopped at Chemanius to see all the painted murals on the buildings which were really nice. We were going to go on a wagon ride but Alex said it wasn’t safe as the horse might do something. They have a lot of nice shops in Chemanius, Alex found a toy store and wanted to buy something. Alex bought a king and queen from the play mobile set and their prices were normal which surprised me.
Then we drove to Cowichan Valley to go on the train ride. Alex ran towards the train and said hurry up before it leaves. We just made it that was lucky! Alex didn’t like it when the train blew it’s whistle. He covered his ears, I tried pulling them away but Alex screamed. Then we had everyone looking at us so we just left him alone.
The train stops at a big playground that has a slide, a play tractor, a play house and other things. Beside that there is a museum about how far they have come in the logging industry. They also have a small restaurant and antique cars and trucks.
We had lunch there then we got back on the train. Alex had played in the playground before we had lunch. Then we drove towards Victoria. We got to Victoria around three o’clock. We looked for a motel, Charlie wanted to stay at this motel he had gotten a coupon for when we had come over on the ferry. From the outside it looked okay but the inside needs to be redecorated. It had purple carpeting, a green flowered couch, and blue bedspreads. The place didn’t make me feel that relaxed or comfortable. We stayed there anyways just for the night. It was $49 a night which was pretty cheap for Victoria.
We went to Chinatown around four thirty, I wanted to look in the shops but Alex said he was too hungry. So we went to the restaurant first then we went into one of the stores.
We drove around the city for awhile then we went back to the motel to rest. Charlie feel asleep and snored so loud that Alex was hitting him and telling him not to make so much noise.
Alex went to bed at nine o’clock, I watched TV and went to sleep at eleven o’clock.

We had to go back to put our clothes into the dryer. Then we had lunch in the mall and it was time for us to get our clothes. We came back to the motel. Alex and I changed our clothes to get ready to go to Maureen’s. Alex was really excited about going to see Maureen, he didn’t remember her from before.
We got there after one o’clock. The area sure has changed it doesn’t look the same at all, in fact we got lost.! Eric wasn’t there when we got there but he came about half an hour later. He looks pretty good considering all the medication and trouble he’s been having. Friends of theirs dropped by, she’s 57 and he’s 81, she thought he was ten years younger until someone at the wedding said that he was 69. She apparently was really mad.
Maureen asked us to stay for dinner. I f I had known we would have come a little later. I don’t have a great deal in common with Maureen. I also found that she wasn’t as friendly as the last time I had seen her. Maybe she’s changed or maybe she didn’t know how to react to Alex being sick. People can be very strange.
After dinner Alex said that he was tired, so Maureen said he could lie down on the bed in the spare room.
We left at eight o’clock, Alex was still asleep but I just picked him up and went to the car. Maureen gave Alex crayons and a coloring book which was nice. Alex woke up on the way to the motel. When we got back we watched TV. Alex and I went to bed around ten and Charlie was already asleep snoring away.

We planned to go to the beach today but the weather isn’t that good. I said that we should go to Nanaimo and if the weather is good the following day we could come back since it isn’t that far away. Charlie thought that was a good idea.
We got to Nanaimo before lunch time and went into the mall. We phoned Maureen to see if she was free today but she said she was having company. So we decided to meet tomorrow at their house.
Alex wanted a prize from the mall so Charlie bought him Janine of the Ghostbusters. Alex was really happy with that, now he has all the people of the Ghostbusters.
In the afternoon we looked for a motel, we went into the downtown area but didn’t find anything we liked. We ended up getting a motel across from the mall that we had been in earlier. It was really nice, it must have been only a few years old and was really clean. One of the cheaper motels we have been in.
We went to Bonanza for dinner, there sure were a lot of people there. It was pretty well full, after dinner we drove around then we came back to the motel. While we were out we stopped at a park near the waterfront which Alex really enjoyed.
Alex and I watched TV when we got back to the motel and Charlie fell asleep and snored as usual! Alex went to sleep at nine o’clock and I went to bed at ten o’clock.

Charlie was already up when I woke up at eight thirty. He had gone to get himself some coffee. Alex was still asleep. I was suppose to take the rest of the medicine but I didn’t as it makes me so drowsy.
I had a shower and got dressed. Then I got our stuff ready as we are leaving to go to Qualicum Beach today.
Alex woke up at nine o’clock. I gave him a shower and helped him get dressed. We left the motel at ten o’clock. We stopped at the McMillan Bloedel tall trees. Alex didn’t like the place at all, we were going to go along the trail but Alex said he didn’t want to go. It seemed like he was really scared. We then went to Coombs where I bought some sovereigns. Alex went on a pony ride which he seemed to enjoy. We left at about one o’clock and went to Qualicum Beach. We drove around town to find a motel and settled on one near the beach. It looked really nice from the outside and was okay inside but there were spiders all over the place.
Charlie and Alex went down to the beach in their bare feet. I didn’t think it was a very good idea but they said they didn’t want to take their shoes. When they came back they said they should of taken their shoes as there were so many rocks and shells on the beach.
At four o’clock we drove to Parksville to see the beach we had gone to when Alex was 1 ½ years old. It was about the same as the beach at Qualicum Beach. Then we came back, we wanted to go to a restaurant to eat but Alex said he would only eat fish and chips. We tried to change his mind but Alex was set on having fish and chips for dinner. We stopped at a take-out and brought it back to the motel to eat.
At least the motel has pay TV so we can watch a good movie. Charlie fell asleep around seven o’clock and drove Alex and myself crazy with all his snoring. Alex had a great time hitting Charlie and telling him to quite snoring.
Alex and I went to bed at ten o’clock. I slept with Alex so I could tell when he needed to go to the bathroom.

We woke up at six thirty. Charlie was already up but Alex was still asleep. I had a shower and got dressed. I finished packing then I got Alex up, got him to have a shower and get dressed. Alex didn’t want anything for breakfast he said he wanted to eat at the ferry.
We left for the ferry at eight fifteen, we had planned to leave at eight o’clock. Charlie wasn’t too happy about that but there’s nothing we could do now. We got to the ferry terminal at eight fifty five and we were able to get on the ferry. The ferry left at nine o’clock, so we were pretty lucky!
When we got off the ferry we drove to Parksville and phoned Allison from there. The operator wouldn’t take our number for a third number billing so we had to pay about three dollars in coins by the time we finished the call. Allison said that they were feeling better but that Davis had an ear infection and was on medication. We decided that it should be okay and Alex was so looking forward to seeing Kurt.
Davis’s father met us in Port Alberni in front of one of the motels, then we followed him back to his house. He doesn’t live too far from town and he lives on farmland. Quite a nice place with chickens and a big garden. Davis grew up on the farm which surprised us both, we thought he grew up in Vancouver.
Allison had a lot of stuff to eat. After we had eaten the boys took us out to see the chickens, then they picked blueberries.
We left at three o’clock and checked into our motel. We went to the Salmon Derby to have smoked salmon, not exactly my kind of meal but Charlie liked it. Alex said he wouldn’t eat salmon so we went and got a hamburger and corn on the cob which wasn’t that good. It took Charlie about twenty minutes before he could get his salmon and then Alex said he wanted some!
After we had all eaten we walked around and I got stung by something. I didn’t see it so I thought my arm just hurt. My arm got all red and a blister appeared. We left and came back to the motel. When we got back I felt strange so Charlie suggested that I go to emergency. When we got there, there were quite a few people there already. We had to wait quite awhile before a doctor a came to look at my arm. He said I was having a normal reaction to the sting and he would give me a prescription. The nurse gave me the pills and I couldn’t believe it the doctor and prescribed prednisone to take. Alex said that’ll make you really hungry!
I went to bed not long after I took the pills, they made me so drowsy.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had breakfast and also made breakfast for Alex. I had a shower and got dressed. I started to get stuff ready for the Island tomorrow. I did the laundry but found that the dryer wasn’t working so when Dad came over to get one of his tools I asked if we could use their dryer. The first load we hung up on a line in the basement but the other load once they were washed I took down to Mom and Dad’s to dry. I made about three trips down in the afternoon. Mom was nice and folded all the laundry.
We went out in the afternoon, late afternoon. Then we went out for dinner. After dinner we came home and I started to pack Alex and my clothing.
At eight o’clock we went to Mom and Dad’s to pick up the rest of the laundry and to leave Kelly there while we went away. We came home around nine o’clock and I finished packing. Alex went to bed at ten o’clock. I went to bed around midnight.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I made Alex and myself breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
Alex got dressed and went outside to ride his bike. After lunch I told him he had to have a nap as he was so cranky. While Alex was having a nap typed in the journal. Alex woke up around two o’clock then he went outside to ride his bike. I did some work around the house.
We went to McDonalds for dinner, then we came home. There is no point even considering going to the mall with Alex since every time we go there Alex wants to buy a toy. I find it very difficult to look at anything with Alex. He keeps on saying he wants to go to the toy store to buy a toy.
Alex rode his bike when we got home and played with the other kids. They all wanted to come in but I said no. I just find it a bit much having the kids in the house every day, it just has to be in the afternoon. I feel like a real creep but they don’t seem to go to anybody else’s house.
Alex went to bed at ten o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; August 31, 1988
I woke up at nine o’clock. I made breakfast for Alex and myself then I had a shower and got dressed. At ten o’clock Alex’s friends came and asked him to come outside. I waited for Charlie to have a shower and get dressed before I left for the mall. I try to get out by myself at least once a week so Charlie and Alex can be together by themselves.
I came back before twelve o’clock expecting them to be out but when I got home there were three kids in the house besides Alex. Patrick, Kurt, and Timothy were there playing in Alex’s room, more like they were playing with Alex’s toys. We told them to go home because we were having our lunch. They weren’t too happy about that. I had to tell them quite a few times before they would leave.
After lunch they all came back. I didn’t mind when it was only one or two but when there is four of them it gets to be a bit much. They never did clean up the room so it ended up to be Alex, Kurt and I who cleaned it up. Alex said he wanted to ride his bike so I sent them all outside. Then they played in the sandbox for awhile. Timothy had gone home and Kurt went somewhere with Nora so it was just Patrick and Alex in the sandbox. They rode their bikes some more but they started to fight. Alex isn’t feeling too good I think it’s the medicine coming through. It’s hard to explain to the other kids since they don’t realize that Alex is sick.
I told Alex have had to come inside for awhile and Patrick went home. Kurt came back about an hour later and we invited him inside to play. Some of the other kids came over but I told them we were looking after Kurt and maybe tomorrow they could come over.
Kurt went home at six o’clock and then we had dinner. After dinner Alex went outside with his friends and played until eight o’clock. Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
