Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 31, 1988

I woke up at nine o’clock, I gave Alex a bath and got him dressed. Then he had breakfast and watched TV.

I vacuumed upstairs and downstairs then I washed all the floors.

I made Alex go for a nap after lunch. Which he didn’t want to do but he was pretty tired.

Alex was suppose to go to gym class today but I felt it would be better for him to rest more.

Alex and I watched Mary Poppins then Charlie came home from work.

Charlie went to Save-On-Foods while I was cooking dinner. When he came back he said the clerk told him to get out of the store, there was a bomb scare. Charlie said people were actually waiting outside to go back into the store.

After dinner Alex and I went downstairs to exercise then we played video games.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight thirty but he didn’t fall asleep until ten o’clock.

I wrote in the journal and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock, Alex seems pretty cranky today. Not enough sleep I suppose. Alex had breakfast but he only ate about a quarter of it. After breakfast I got him a blanket and he watched TV.

I had a shower and got dressed. Actually I cleaned the bathrooms first.

After lunch we went to see Dr. W, he said Alex didn’t have the mumps that mumps would have gone by now. Dr. W said Alex didn’t have anything wrong with his glands from Chemotherapy. The doctor said it looked like Alex had eaten a few extra groceries. He told me that a mump test could take up to six weeks to do.

I told Dr. W we lived near a power tower and had he seen the study that had been done on it. Dr. W said he hadn’t seen it.

When we got home I got to thinking about what he had said. It seems to me that he really didn’t know why Alex’s jaw line was swollen. Alex also has a rash were it is swollen on the right side.

Alex watched tv while I did some work around the house.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. When Charlie came into our bedroom where Alex was watching tv, Alex said to Charlie “Get out of here!” Which made Charlie mad and he said to Alex what’s the matter with you. I told Charlie Alex wasn’t feeling good and it was better to leave him alone. Charlie said I didn’t do anything and Alex screamed at me. I said I know but there’s still no point in talking to him.

I phoned Shirley to wish her Happy Birthday at work earlier but the line was busy.

We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner Alex and I played video games. Then we went outside and did some gardening. Charlie cut the grass and I put the top soil around the trees. We moved one of the Maple trees by the stairs to the right side of the yard.

We came inside and Alex went to bed at nine o’clock.

I wrote in the journal and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up before nine o’clock, Alex had gotten up earlier and Charlie had given him breakfast.

I had breakfast then I had a bath. Usually if I have a bath I don’t feel so tired. Today I feel like I didn’t sleep at all.

I was planning on doing some gardening but when I got outside it started to pour.

I decided to tidy up the house, it seems to be always in a mess. I did the dishes and made the beds.

Mom had invited us for dinner. By the time we got ready it was three o’clock. Alex had a nap after lunch and slept until just before three o’clock.

Mom was just getting dinner ready when we got there. We had breaded veal cutlets which was a really nice change from roast beef. We brought strawberries for dessert.

Alex wasn’t feeling that good. He kept on arguing with me. I had to slap his hand because he started to hit me. Then Alex stepped on my foot which felt like the skin was coming off.

We left at eight o’clock, I had enough of Alex arguing with me for one day.

When we got home I put Alex to bed. He didn’t fall asleep until eleven o’clock. At ten o’clock Alex asked for a snack, he said I can’t wait, I can’t wait.

I watched TV then I went to bed at eleven thirty.

I was able to sleep until nine thirty this morning. I had told Charlie I was so tired and that I needed to sleep in. Alex did come in and asked if his temperature should be taken around eight o’clock. I got up but I still felt pretty tired. I had breakfast, a shower and got dressed. I tried tidying up the house but I just didn’t have the energy to do it.

After lunch we went to Capilano mall. As soon as we got there Alex said he was hungry. Charlie bought him some fires and a drink. Alex also said he couldn’t walk but we hadn’t brought the stroller so Charlie got a shopping cart.

We looked around the stores. Charlie had seen in the paper that Cotton Ginny was having a sale. He said he would give me the money for some clothes. I got a pair of pants and a t-shirt. I thought that was really nice of him.

Then we went to a Won-Ton House for dinner. We came home at seven o’clock.

Alex and I played some video games then he went to bed. I went to bed at nine thirty.

Alex woke me up at eight thirty. I made breakfast, had a shower and got dressed. I tided up the house, did a number of loads of laundry, changed the sheets on Alex’s bed and did the dishes.

I phoned Allison to see if we were still getting together for lunch. She said give us five minutes we just got back.

Alex had been talking about Kurt all week. He really enjoys going over there for lunch.

Alex was really excited to hear that we could go. He wanted to wear his raincoat over to show Kurt and Allison

The kids enjoyed themselves they had a good time playing together. Allison has a cold so she didn’t sound that great.

As usual I had a hard time getting Alex to leave. Erin was over she stays at Allison’s and Mac comes to pick her up at five. Rayon works form Thursday to Sunday.

By the time we left it was four thirty, I’m sure Allison was glad to see us go! It was quite a house full with all the kids.

When we got home Charlie was back. Alex asked if we could go out for dinner.

We left at five o’clock, we went to the bank then we went to Boston Pizza.

After dinner we went to the mall. The Bay had comforters on sale for $19.99 we got one for our bed. It sure is a lot nicer than our old one. It’s beige, pink and grey and has nice big flowers on it. It sure matches our bedroom.

We came home around eight o’clock. Alex and I played video games for awhile then he went to bed.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 24, 1988

I woke up at eight thirty. I phoned Dr. W and they said they would give him the message. Dr. W phoned back at nine thirty. I told him I was concerned about Alex, the swelling hasn’t gone down yet and on Saturday the other side was swollen. He said he was going to phone the hospital and wanted me to phone five minutes later. Dr. W said he wanted the hospital to explain what chemotherapy can do to a patients glands.

I phoned the hospital and they said to come in at one o’clock. I asked them if we could come at three o’clock instead. Joan checked and said that was okay.

I had a shower and got dressed. Alex and I went to the bank and McDonald’s. We came home and had lunch.

We took Kurt to gym class, they had “friend day” today. There was about twenty kids there. The parents were told to stay and supervise their child and his or her friend. It sure was exhausting following Alex and Kurt around. They didn’t stay on anything for very long. The last twenty minutes the instructors made up games for the kids to do.

We took Kurt home, Nora invited us in but I told her I had to take Alex to the hospital. Nora said I hope it’s nothing serious. I told her my doctor thought it was from Chemotherapy.

We went to the hospital and got there before three o’clock. Alex and I played some games while we waited. We saw Dr. R, I told him all Alex’s symptoms. Dr. R said Alex had the mumps, but he said they would do a test to confirm it. I asked Dr. R if Alex could be around other children. He said Alex couldn’t be around his kids but other kids would be okay. He told us to wait in the room for the tests. Mary did a blood test and Heather took a throat swab.

Heather asked us to go out the back door so we wouldn’t infect anyone.

We went to Mom and Dad’s, Mom had invited us over. We had dinner then Mom and Dad watched the hockey game on TV.

Alex said he didn’t want me to leave him while I went to the Candlelighters meeting. It’s a support group for parents of Cancer patients.

Alex said he was really tired and wanted to lie down. I put him into Mom and Dad’s bed. Alex asked me to lie down with him. Alex fell asleep and about fifteen minutes later I left for the meeting.

When I got to the meeting there were three people there. The chairperson, her husband and another woman. The chairperson introduced herself and the other woman. They asked me who my child was and what type of Cancer he had. Both of their children had ALL and were about the same age as Alex. They said their kids were on radiation which surprised me. The other woman said her son was a high risk patient. The chairperson’s daughter had been given a double dose of Methotrexiate by the hospital.

Once the meeting got started we had to tell who we were, how many children we had, what our child had, and how they were doing. I do terrible in front of more than four people, so I had a hard time. I was the second person to speak and I got quite emotional. I cut my intro quite short but if I had carried on I know I would of broken down.

One of the women broke down and cried when she talked about her son. She has twin boys, one of the boys has a tumour around his pelvis and they were unable to operate. That’s all she could say.

I felt really badly for her it’s very hard talking to people about a sick child.

After everyone had done their intro, the chairperson told us some of the things they planned to do.

She explained that Candlelighters isn’t from the hospital. The hospital group would be having a meeting on June 21st. The group then decided to have their next meeting a week after the hospital.

The meeting finished before ten o’clock and I went to get Alex.

Mom had made me some tea and cake when I got back. Mom seemed quite anxious to hear about the meeting. I told her all about it. Then Alex woke up and we went home.

On the way home Alex asked why I hadn’t gone to the meeting. I told him I had gone. Alex was really surprised I had gone. He said I didn’t see you go. I said that’s because you were asleep.

When we got home we both went to bed. It was about eleven thirty by then.

Shirley phoned at nine o’clock and woke us up. She’s going to Science World and wondered if we wanted to come. Aaron was going to his parents in Surrey to help do the landscaping. I told her I would phone back. Charlie was getting out of bed.

We decided to go and went to meet Shirley and the kids down there at eleven o’clock. Brent and Alex really enjoyed everything, especially the dinosaurs. They’re so life like they gave me the creeps. The dinosaurs are made half the size as they were in real life. No wonder humans weren’t around yet! We decided to get a membership.

We all went to Whit Spot for a late lunch. The kids all had Dinosaur packs!

Brent kept on asking Shirley if he could go to Alex’s house to play. I told her they were welcome to come over. They stayed for about an hour then Monique started to complain. She was pretty tired.

Alex fell asleep at six o’clock., and woke up at nine o’clock. He said he was hungry, I got Alex finally went back to bed at eleven o’clock. I went to bed as well.

He told me when they went to White Spot they had the same dinosaurs that Grandma had gotten him. Then he asked me if I had a good time. Alex finally fell asleep at four o’clock.

Then Alex woke me up before eight o’clock, he said he wanted breakfast. I was hoping to sleep in until at least nine o’clock, too bad!

After breakfast I had a shower, got dressed and vacuumed the house.

Shirley phoned to say they would be coming over around two thirty.

Before one o’clock I told Alex to go for a nap. Alex was really mad that he had to go for a nap. He screamed and yelled and tried to get away. He finally fell asleep.

Shirley and Brent came over at 1:45 p.m. Alex was still asleep. Brent played video games while Shirley and I talked.

I woke Alex up at two thirty, but he said he was too tired to get up yet. Brent was really upset that he couldn’t play with Alex. When Shirley told Brent it was time to go he started to cry. Brent said but I didn’t get to play with Alex.

Alex woke up when they were leaving. I thought he would be really mad but when I told him Brent cried. Alex thought that was really funny. Charlie came home from work shortly afterwards. Mom had invited us for dinner, we left at four thirty.

Charlie stopped to buy gas, they were having a gas war at Turbo. They were selling it for $39.9 a litre.

We got to Mom and Dad’s at quarter after five. I thought we might be late but dinner wasn’t ready yet.

I told Alex we wouldn’t be going to Allison’s for lunch today that Kurt was sick. Alex started to cry and he said but I want to go to Kurt’s house. Then he said I’m going to go over there right now!

I phoned the dentist and was able to get an appointment for 11:30 a.m. Alex’s face is still swollen and I thought there might be something wrong with his teeth.

We left before eleven o’clock. Dr. E looked at Alex. I told him that Alex had been grinding his and that his jaw was all swollen. Dr. E said that Alex probably got a Charlie horse when he ground his teeth. He also said that it’s very painful.

I had my bottom teeth cleaned. Alex sat in the room with me and played with his cars.

We left at twelve thirty. I told Alex since he had been so good at the dentist I was taking him out for lunch. We went to Lougheed mall and shared lunch. We walked around the mall for awhile then we came home.

Mom had given Alex two Dinosaurs that they had gotten from White Spot. She had also given Alex posters and a dinosaurs shirt.

Alex had hot cereal for breakfast. I made bran muffins which Alex help make.

Alex watched TV while I had a shower and got dressed. When I was drying my hair Alex came in and said the phone is ringing but I’m not answering it. He’s like I was when I was a kid, I hated to answer the phone.

Mom had phoned and I phoned her back. She was wondering how Alex was.

I had phoned the dentist earlier to find out if the swelling on Alex’s jaw could be from Alex grinding his teeth. Megan said oh my kids use to get pinworms when there jaw swelled up but that’s not your problem. Some people have no brains. She knew that Alex has Leukemia so why say something so stupid. Megan said well we can’t fit you in today and the long weekend is coming so you’ll have to come on Tuesday at noon. That really annoyed me, if someone has a problem why not try and see them right away.

I forgot that’s gym day so I’ll have to cancel the appointment tomorrow.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex was just waking up, his face is still swollen. He said his jaw was hurting again. I gave him Tempra and got him his breakfast.

After breakfast I phoned the hospital. I talked to Heather and she said I should take Alex to the family doctor. She didn’t think it was from the Vincristine. I told her Alex never had any jaw pain from it before. Heather said to phone back if the doctor found anything wrong with Alex.

I phoned and made an appointment with Dr. W. I had to tell the receptionist that Alex has Leukemia and that his face was swollen before I could get an appointment. She had said he was fully booked which is usually the case.

I had a shower and got dressed. We left at eleven thirty.

Dr. W said he had received a letter from the hospital. He said the letter stated that Alex was doing good on his treatment. I gave Dr. W the latest blood counts.

I told Dr. W that Alex’s face was swollen. He checked him but he said he couldn’t find anything wrong with him. Dr. W said we would have to wait and see but there was no ear infection or gland problem. He said sometimes when you have chemotherapy a patient can experience swelling in the glands.

I said to him I hear your leaving. He said let’s sit down and talk about it. Dr. W said after a lot of deliberation he had decided to take the offer from the College. He said he had worked there at the college during the year for a few weeks.

He said when he thought of patients like Alex it was a hard decision. He talked about all Alex’s problems and how strong he was through it all.

Dr. W said he was leaving at the end of June and that Dr. C would be taking over his practise in July. He said she worked in the clinic last summer and the other doctors were surprised at the amount of medical knowledge she had. Dr. W said he wanted someone he could recommend well to his patients. He asked me what I was going to do I said the only doctor I saw was Dr. B and I felt he was quite good. Dr. W said he was a very good doctor.

We came home and had lunch afterwards we watched Annie.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. We had dinner at five thirty. After dinner we watched TV.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight thirty. At nine o’clock Alex said he couldn’t sleep. He had a nap this afternoon. He finally went to sleep when I did at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex woke up last night at eleven thirty. He said his jaw really hurt. I gave home Tempra but he said he had to sleep in our bed.

Mom phoned and said they had slept in and would be leaving soon. They have to go to Kelowna to have the van repaired. Mom said she didn’t know what to do with Geordie so I said I would look after him.

They came over at ten o’clock. Mom seemed a bit upset about leaving Geordie behind.

Once they were gone Geordie kept on looking for Mom and Dad to come into the house. After an hour he started to cry. I told him they had to go to the store and they couldn’t bring him with them. Not to worry they were coming back. Believe it or not this little talk seemed to help him. Geordie settled down but still followed us around the house.

We went out in the afternoon to Triple Tree nursery. We bought some seeds, vegetable plants and a couple of plants.

After we got home I took out the bulbs at the front. Halfway through doing the bulbs, I started to feel sick. I felt sick to my stomach and had pains in my stomach.

Alex and Kurt played together until five thirty. We started to cook dinner and ate at six o’clock. After dinner we took the dogs for a walk.

Alex fell asleep watching TV at seven o’clock. He woke up at nine o’clock. Alex said his jaw really hurt. At eleven thirty when I put Alex back to his bed he started to cry he said his jaw really hurt. I brought him into our bed and we could see that on his right side his face was swollen. I phoned the hospital and they said they can experience some jaw pain with Vincristine. There shouldn’t be any swelling. The nurse said to give Alex Tylenol and to take his temperature. If Alex still was in pain and had a fever he should come into the hospital. We should phone first.

It took Alex quite awhile before he fell asleep.

At two o’clock Alex woke me up. He was really warm. I took his temperature, it was 38.29c. We went back to sleep.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I didn’t have breakfast as I wanted to go to Dyna-fit.

I went to the class. Alex and Charlie went to the mall. When I came home they were already home. I got changed and had lunch.

Alex and I left for the hospital at one o’clock. There wasn’t anywhere for us to sit when we got there. On the way in Alex told me he liked having a poke for the blood tests. Mary thought this was a bit weird.

Dr. S wasn’t there, we saw Dr. R. I told the doctor that Alex has a cold and a cough. She checked him over and couldn’t find anything unusual. She said he was okay and gave me his prescription.

When we went to get the prescription the pharmacist said that the doctor had changed the medication. Dr R had put Alex on liquid Septra instead of the pills which he has been taking. I told the pharmacist that Alex wouldn’t take it, so she phoned the doctor. I was able to get it changed to the usual pills. Then the pharmacist said the doctor had increased the dosage on 6MP. I told her I was going to check it to be on the safe side.

I had noticed on the prescription that the doctor had written that Alex was to take his Methotrexiate on Fridays instead of Mondays. I’m going to leave it on Mondays since Dr. S wanted it that way.

Lenore gave Alex his Vincristine. The first time she couldn’t get it in, so she had to take it out and put it in the other arm. Krisann came when Lenore was doing it the second time. Krisann was surprised that Alex was crying. She held his arm when Lenore was doing it and Alex started to kick the table. Krisann told him to stop that, she said you might kick my baby. Alex said what baby. I told him Krisann had a baby in her tummy didn’t he know that. Alex said NO!

We left the hospital at four o’clock. I took Alex to McDonald’s for dinner. He had fallen asleep on the way.

After McDonald’s Alex wanted to go to the mall. We found a Ghostbuster’s slide for his view master and I bought it for him.

I looked around for something else for Mom for Mother’s Day. Then we came home at seven o’clock.

I measured Alex then I got dressed.

Shirley phoned and said they would drop by if we were free. I told her we didn’t have anything planned.

Marla came about ten minutes later. We exchanged stuff, I wished her a good trip and she thanked me for the kids stuff.

Charlie and I had a disagreement in the car which makes it difficult to walk in the mall.

We were there only bout half an hour when Alex said he couldn’t walk. So we left and came home. Just before we left I said I would meet them in the car that I wanted to get a scratch ticket. Alex practically jumped out of Charlie’s arms and said he wanted to do it. Charlie said I thought you couldn’t walk. Alex said I’m fine now and went to the information area!
