I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I gave Kelly his pill. Kelly must have had another seizure this morning. His mouth had salvia on it as well as the side of his face. Then I had a shower and got dressed.
We went to the City Hall to pay the taxes then we went to the library to photo copy Alex’s schedule. By the time we got home it was time for lunch.
After lunch I phoned Dr. H. he phoned back later in the afternoon. He said to increase Kelly’s medication to 2 ½ pills daily. I told Dr. H about Kelly’s breathing that it was quite rapid then he starts to pant and drool. Dr. H said that was alright. I really don’t like it when he breathes so heavily.
When Charlie had come home from work we went to the mall. I looked for a present for Mom’s birthday but I couldn’t find anything. I said I would go by myself tomorrow.
We came home around eight o’clock. We watched tv and Alex got ready for bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 29, 1989
I woke up at six forty five, I had set the alarm for seven o’clock but I woke up earlier.
I went downstairs to give Kelly his pill. He must of just finished having a seizure. I checked the basement and saw that it must have been in the laundry room. I cleaned his mouth, the salvia is so bad that it almost makes me throw up. Then I put him out and gave him food and water.
I had a shower, got dressed and had breakfast. I went into Alex’s room and luckily he was just getting up. Alex had a shower then he had his breakfast.
We left for the hospital at eight fifteen. When we got there, there was only one other family there. It wasn’t long before it started to fill up.
By the time Alex had his blood test and we saw the doctor it was after ten o’clock.
Alex wanted to go to the cafeteria, I told one of the nurse where we were going. Dr. S said you might as well get your prescription done while your at it. It will be quite awhile for Alex’s LP. I thought so why do we have to come so early.
The pharmacy at Shaughnessy is still closed because of the nurses strike. We went to the Jean Matheson Pavilion to the pharmacy, it sure is a long walk. It didn’t take long for the prescription. We walked outside back to Children’s Hospital then inside through the other hospital buildings.
We went to the cafeteria and Alex decided upon Rice Krispies. We went back to the clinic and waited and waited. At eleven fifteen I asked the nurse how much longer it would be for Alex’s LP. The nurse was rather rude, she said his medicine isn’t even here yet. Another nurse said an LP is being done now.
It was just before noon before Alex had his LP done. Lauren held him while Laurel read Alex stories. I sat beside Alex and held his hand. Alex was very good, he cried but he didn’t fight having it done or yell. They probably wish every child was more like Alex.
I asked one of the nurse to lift Alex up on the bed so he could lie down. Lenore put Alex into the bed. I sat down and read my book, unfortunately I couldn’t sit close to Alex’s bed there were so many people!
I kept on having to get up to tell Alex to lie down on his side. Alex had opened his hospital prize while we were at the pharmacy. He was now playing with them on his bed.
Lenore gave Alex his Vincristine I.V. push at one o’clock, then we left for McDonald’s. Alex fell asleep on the way there. We went to the McDonald’s across form Lougheed mall. By the time we got home it was two thirty.
Alex did his new Ghostbusters puzzle and I helped him with it.
Charlie came home at four o’clock. He wanted to go out to the mall tonight but later changed his mind. Maybe he noticed how tired I must have looked.
After dinner I laid down for a nap, I was very very tired! I woke up at seven o’clock and watched tv.
Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Charlie woke me up before seven o’clock. I have to drive him to the motor vehicle branch today. I had a shower, tested my blood and had my breakfast. Charlie woke up Alex, got him to have a shower and gave him his breakfast. I asked Charlie to give Kelly his pill before we left.
Charlie was complaining that we were going to be late since we left at eight o’clock. When we got there, they weren’t open until eight thirty. We had to wait twenty minutes. Charlie lined up at the door so he wouldn’t have to wait once they opened. Charlie had no problem getting his drivers license renewed even though it had already expired.
We got home before nine o’clock. Charlie rushed to go to work. Alex phoned Patrick to come over to play. They played until eleven o’clock when Patrick went home. Alex was really mad. He asked Patrick if he could come with him but Patrick said he wanted to go home. I think Patrick didn’t understand what Alex meant.
I wrote in the journal, after lunch and did the laundry.
I started to cook dinner at five o’clock. Charlie didn’t get home until six o’clock.
After dinner we went to Mom and Dad’s to see their new car. They traded in the Subaru for a newer Subaru. Dad said the old one didn’t have enough power especially for going up hills. I liked the new one a lot better, it’s a sand color and the shape is much nicer.
Mom said the doctor told her that her x-ray was okay. Dad said it’s a terrible ordeal having the stomach x-rayed since they also x-rayed the colon. They have insert something into the rectum. Mom still has to go for a physical before Cr. C will change her pills.
We came home at nine thirty. Charlie went to bed while I got Alex ready for bed. Alex finally decided he wanted a banana boat for a snack. After he had eaten it he said he had a stomach ache. I told him to get ready for bed. Alex complained he couldn’t get ready by himself. I helped him and Alex finally got into bed with a few cars and a couple of turtles. I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at eight o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I gave Kelly his pill and had a shower.
In the morning I changed the sheets, did the laundry, the dishes, and wrote in the journal.
After lunch Alex phoned Patrick to come over to play. Patrick left at three o’clock, he said he wanted to go home. It didn’t help that Alex got mad and said he was going to play something that Patrick couldn’t play. I don’t blame Patrick for going home.
Alex and I had dinner at five thirty. Charlie had to go get Alex’s pills at Children’s Hospital. Joan had phoned on Friday afternoon. She said Dr. S was only working half days and they needed to change Alex’s appointment to Thursday. I said I wanted to check to see if I had enough pills. I didn’t, so Joan checked with Dr. S. she said the doctor said to get more pills on Monday or Tuesday and to come again on Thursday. They sure are something else, we always seemed to be getting bumped.
Charlie got home at six o’clock, he said he had a hard time getting Alex’s pills. The pharmacy in Shaughnessy Hospital was closed due to the strike. The pharmacy at Jean Matheson Hospital is to be used. It was very hard to find Charlie said.
After dinner we watched tv. I told Charlie he had forgotten to renew his drivers license. He phoned the motor vehicle place but they were closed. He then phoned the police, they said it was beside Mother Tuckers and opened form 8-4. This means that I have to drive Charlie tomorrow morning. Charlie phoned Adam and asked him to let Tom know he would be late in the morning.
Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.

I woke up at eight o’clock. I could hear Charlie and Alex getting ready to go. I explained to Alex that he had to stay with Charlie and Mitch. He had to hold their hands. Alex said I know already! I said well I don’t want to hear that you got lost. Alex said okay, okay.
They left before nine o’clock to pick up Mitch and then go to the Dragon Boat races at Expo.
After I had my breakfast I gave Kelly his pill and had a shower. Shirley phoned when I was getting out of the shower. I didn’t bother answering it since I knew the answering machine was on. By the time I got out of the bathroom the phones was ringing again, this time I was able to get it. We had planned on meeting for lunch today. Shirley wanted to go to Knight and Day in New Westminster but I wasn’t up to it today. First of all I have to take my blood, and secondly I had such terrible pains last night in my abdomen I just feel I’m not up to going very far. We decided on White Spot.
I watched the end of the video then I got ready to go. I went to London Drugs to buy more strips then I went to White Spot. I couldn’t see Shirley’s car so I went to the other White Spot in Coquitlam. Then I saw her car at Lougheed and Dewdney Trunk, so I had to turn around and go back. What a time I had!
Shirley’s friend Aimee was there as well with her son Dan. They said they wanted to have a BBQ tonight. I said I didn’t know what time Charlie and Alex would be coming home, so I would phone her later.
Bt the time I got home I started to have pains in my lower abdomen. I realized that I had eaten a double portion of starch. I did my blood test and it was at 8.6. I did it again in half an hour but it was still the same. I then exercised which seemed to help quite a bit.
Mom asked u to come for dinner, we went down before five o’clock. I had talked to Shirley earlier and told her I wasn’t up to a BBQ tonight. There would have been four other kids there and that would have been too much for Alex. He was really tired when he got home.
While I was having dinner, I was still experiencing sharp pain in my lower abdomen. After awhile the pain went away. I t seemed when I ate protein it helped.
We came home at ten o’clock. Alex had a snack and got ready for bed.

In the afternoon Alex phoned Mitch to see if he wanted to come to the parade today.
Aft four o’clock Charlie, Alex and Mitch went in the bike parade. I sat outside and watched. I knew I wouldn’t be able to walk on the route. Unfortunately it was organized by a child and it started half an hour late. Everyone must have been really hot from sitting in the sun so long. The man who was driving didn’t have his stereo on loud enough and then he drove too fast Charlie said.
When Alex came home his face was really red and he was so tired.
We rested for awhile then we went to a Won Ton House in New Westminster for dinner. Mitch had phoned Mom to let her know he would be having dinner with us.
We stopped at a video store on the way home. Alex was really mad he couldn’t rent a video but there would be no time for him to watch it. Tomorrow they’re going to watch the Dragon Boat races. I rented Clean and Sober.

I woke up at seven thirty, Alex and I had breakfast then I gave Kelly his medicine and had a shower.
I phoned the vet but Dr. H is off until Monday. I left a message for Dr. R.
We went to Coquitlam Centre at nine thirty but it doesn’t open until ten o’clock. We sat down until the stores opened in the mall. After Alex looked in the toy store we went and bought Charlie a couple of t-shirts for his birthday. Then we bought Alex’s hospital prize. Alex wanted micro masters, the patrol set and a Ghostbusters puzzle.
We got home at twelve thirty, after lunch Alex phoned Patrick. Patrick said he didn’t want to play right now. Alex was upset about that, he said what am I going to do now. I said I don’t know. Then later I suggest he phone Mitch and see if he wanted to come over. Alex wasn’t too sure about that at first but later decided to phone anyways. Mitch said he would be over soon.
Dr. R had phoned while we were out. I phoned him back and was able to talk to him. I explained to him what happened last night and I wanted to know if it was normal. Dr. R said it was quite normal, that it must be very frightening for him and he’s probably trying to get away from the seizure. He said once they have a seizure they don’t know they’re having it. Dr. R said this information is based on people having seizures. He asked if Kelly was still throwing up. I said no he seems to be okay. Dr. R said to keep his medicine the same.
I wrote in the journal most of the afternoon. Charlie came home at four o’clock. Charlie was going to open his present when he got home but we wouldn’t let him.
We went to Mom and Dad’s for dinner. Mom made a black forest cake for dessert, it sure looked good. Alex said I couldn’t have any unless it was on my list! To say the least I didn’t have any. Charlie opened his presents, Mom and Dad gave Charlie two t-shirts, Alex and I gave him two t-shirts.

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast, Alex had a bath then I had a shower.
We went shopping, I had to buy dog food, get gas, get my prescription fill and buy a few groceries. First of all Alex didn’t want to go and told me he was going to be bad in the store. Some how or other he changed his mind. Especially when I said we either go in the morning or in the afternoon when Patrick might be coming over!
We had lunch when we got home. Alex asked me to set up his pool in the backyard. He didn’t go in it for very long as it was cloudy then sunny then cloudy again. Alex was getting cold he said.
Charlie came home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at five thirty after dinner I went for a nap. Alex said he had to have one too. I was really tired and not feeling good at all. When my back or leg starts to bother me it really tires me out.
I didn’t sleep very long as the phone was ringing. About five or ten minutes later I heard voices, it sounded like Mitch to me. I woke Alex up that I thought Mitch was here. Alex jumped out of bed to see then he went to hide. What a silly boy he is. Just this afternoon he was so upset because he hadn’t asked Mitch over yet. Alex is so afraid Mitch will go home before he comes over.
Mitch stayed until nine thirty. He had ridden Dad’s bike up and it was starting to get dark.
Alex said he had a good time playing with Mitch. After they had played in the spare room and Alex’s room they played video games.
Kelly came to us and he looked really scared. I got up to give him a pill but it was too late. He started running like he was trying to run away from the seizure. To me he looked like he was going crazy, I had never seen him act like that. Charlie gave him a pill after Kelly was alright. I put Kelly outside and left him downstairs for awhile until he had clamed down.
We watched tv for awhile then Alex got ready for bed. I had quite a time with him, he didn’t get to sleep until after midnight. I was trying to keep him in his own bed. Alex took a lot of stuffed toys up to bed and a couple of COPS and crooks. The problem was that Alex had a nap earlier and he just wasn’t tired.
I finally got into bed after midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 21, 1989
I woke up at eight thirty. I had my breakfast and Alex woke up after I had finished. I made Alex’s breakfast then I gave Kelly his pill and had my shower.
Mom phoned before ten o’clock, I had told her that when I was out yesterday someone called for her. Charlie said someone asked for by her full name, and when Charlie said it was her daughters number they hung up. Mom said none of her friends call her by her full name. I said I had given the doctors office her full name when I made the appointment. She said it must be them then. I said I would phone the doctors office to confirm our appointment.
When I phoned the doctors office they said to come ten minutes earlier. I phoned Mom back to tell her our appointment was okay. She asked what time I would be coming to get her. I said we would come after lunch as Alex wanted to see Mitch. Mitch had asked Mom if he could come home with them when they were at Gibsons yesterday.
I made our bed and did the dishes before lunch then we went to Mom and Dad’s.
Alex and Mitch played video games until it was time for us to go. Mitch stayed with Dad, Alex came with us since the appointment was for him. We got there too early and had to wait awhile. Alex was really bored and had a hard time sitting still. Mom went in first, she had a longer appointment since she’s a new patient. Alex was going to go in with her but I grabbed him before he got away. He’s use to going in with me!
When Alex and I saw Dr. C she said you didn’t tell me your mother was coming today. I said I didn’t think I had to. She said well you told me Alex was coming in but you didn’t tell me your mother was coming in.
Dr. C had gone out to check if my results had come back from yesterday. She said it showed I have a yeast infection, so I’ll give you a prescription. I asked if it was safe to use while being pregnant. She said yes, just put it one the outside.
Dr. C checked Alex, she said it sounds like Alex has a cold. I said yes he’s just getting over one and he’s coughing in the middle of the night.
Dr. C said Alex is due for his booster shot. I told her I was told at the hospital that he wasn’t allowed to have any shots. Dr. C said she knew that certain shots were not allowed like polio and measles because they have the live virus. Diphtheria and Tetanus can be given and Alex should have his booster shot for those. I said we were going in next week so I would check with the doctor.
Dr. C said to watch that Alex doesn’t get a temperature with his cold. His chest sounds okay.
It was funny this time when Cr. C came in. She scared Alex instead of him scaring her! Alex didn’t like that at all.
When we came out to the waiting room Mom wasn’t there so we walked outside. Mom was just coming out of the lab, she had to have a blood test. They gave her a special bandage and a sticker for Alex. Mom said she had to have an x-ray done next week but it’s on Elgin Street.
As we walked to the car, Mom said the doctor sure is thorough isn’t she? I said yes, she’s good that way.
We went back to their house, someone had cut the lawn while we were out. We both said if it was Dad he would be in big trouble. Dad thought that was pretty funny when I told him. It was Mitch who cut the grass anyways. In my opinion neither of them should be cutting the grass.
Dad was really happy that Mom had gone to the doctor and had a thorough going over. He said all he has to do is find a doctor himself.
We stayed for awhile then we came home.
Charlie was already home when we got there, he said he wanted to go to the mall. We left at four forty five, we ate at the Bay and did some shopping and came home.
We watched tv and Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I went to bed at ten thirty.

I woke up at eight thirty. I had my breakfast and while I was having it Alex woke up. I made Alex his breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
I put away my laundry, did the dishes, made the beds and wrote in the journal.
Kelly threw up water this morning. I put him outside and when I checked on him later he was eating grass.
We took Kelly to the vet in the afternoon. Alex was really good, he didn’t interrupt me once while I was talking to the doctor.
Dr. H said Kelly looked a lot better today. He said he was really worried about him last week. He thought he was going downhill. He said it could have been from all the seizures. I asked if he could find out exactly where his growth was. Dr. H said he was very hard if not impossible. He said x-rays don’t show tumours on it until they are very large and even the brain doesn’t show up. Usually only bone maters show up on the x-ray. A cat scan can be done but they don’t have the facilities for it in B.C. I told him one of the other vets told me about a dog having it done at UBC hospital. Dr. H said that particular case the owner was a technician at UBC Hospital for the cat scan. He said unless you know someone they won’t do it. Dr. H said the teaching facilities do it but the closet ones are in Saskatoon and Spokane Washington. He said even if they did find a tumour on Kelly’s brain chances are they wouldn’t operate. He said they don’t like to as they don’t know what the dogs chances are for being normal.
Dr. H said the other thing that could be causing the seizures is a cyst on his brain. That would be much better since a cyst doesn’t grow and he would be alright. He said you just have to hope for the best.
Dr. H said try not to let Kelly eat too much grass, it wouldn’t be good for him because of his past history of pancreatitis.
He said he didn’t know why he was panting more and having to drool. It could be his medication but more it was due to his growth.
We then came home, Alex phoned Patrick but he was out playing. However Patrick did come over about half an hour later.
When Charlie got home from work, I left to go to the doctors. I sure seem to have the problems, it sure is different from when I was pregnant the first time.
I had to wait about twenty minutes before I was taken to the examining room. I explained to Dr. C that the opening was quite itchy now. After examining me she said it could be a yeast infection but she wanted to make sure before she gave me a prescription. I had told her I was coming in tomorrow with Alex, she said she would know by then.
Dr. C asked me when I was going to the diabetic clinic next. I said at the beginning of July but I wasn’t sure of the date. She wondered if I would be going in because of the nurse’s strike. I said I hadn’t heard anything yet but I should soon. I told her Alex had said he wouldn’t be going to the hospital as the nurse’s are on strike. I told Alex he would be going no matter what. Alex said how come? I explained that if he didn’t he would become very sick. Dr. C was really surprised that Alex was aware of the nurses strike.
I went to Safeway to buy milk and a few other things then I went home.
Charlie and Alex had already eaten dinner. I ate as soon as I got home.
After dinner we watched tv then Alex and I put away his toys. Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched tv and went to bed at ten thirty.

I woke up at eight thirty. I tested my urine and blood, then I had breakfast, gave Kelly his pill and had a shower.
Alex woke up at ten o’clock. He had a shower then he had his breakfast.
I changed the sheets on our bed, did the laundry and the dishes.
In the afternoon, Patrick came over to play. I heard them making a lot of noise in the spare room. I told Alex not to make too much of a mess. Then I heard Alex tell Patrick to help him put things away. As I walked by Alex said don’t come in the spare room or my room okay, Mama. I said okay.
Mom phoned this afternoon to see how Kelly was, she wondered after he was so twitchy last night. I said Kelly seems to be okay, I think he’s feeling better. He did go out and eat grass and throw it up. Mom said they were going to Gibson’s tomorrow to give Joan her birthday present. I said I would give her the card I was going to mail.
Charlie came home at four o’clock, he said he was so tired. He said he was too tired to cook dinner. You would think he cooked dinner every day. I said I didn’t say you had to cook dinner, you can’t BBQ anyways since it’s raining so hard.
After dinner I did the dishes and my blood test then we went to Mom and Dad’s to give them the card to take with them tomorrow.
Alex, Charlie and Dad all played video games. We came home at nine o’clock. Alex had a snack and went to bed.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
Alex gave Charlie his Father’s Day present and card. He had put a couple of pennies and a nickel in with his card. Alex sure is good to share his money.
I changed Alex’s sheets and washed his comforter and other laundry. Then I did the dishes and tided up the house.
Patrick came over at noon to play but his mother phoned at twelve thirty to tell him to come home for lunch.
Alex, Charlie and Kelly went for a walk in the afternoon. Kelly seems to be feeling a bit better, he hasn’t thrown up for awhile now.
I put away Alex’s toys and tided up the house again before we got ready to go out.
We went to Sek Kee for Father’s Day dinner. Dad seemed to really enjoy the food, I don’t think they go out for Chinese food very often. Mom’s foot seems to be getting better, at least she can walk without a crutch now.
We went back to their house. Alex and Dad played the new game we gave him. Mom is mad at Blair and Jeff. Blair didn’t send anything yet, she did that last year and it came late. Jeff told them he couldn’t afford to buy them anything for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Then he told them he went away for the weekend and he invited his staff over for a BBQ. Mom said she didn’t care about herself but considering what Dad has been through the last year. I found it a bit hard to believe Jeff couldn’t afford to buy a present. I said he could buy something that didn’t cost too much money.
I had made a butter cake for dessert which everyone had except me. We came home at ten o ‘clock. Alex had a snack and went to bed. I went to bed shortly afterwards.

I woke up at eight o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
Laura phoned just after I had gotten up. She said did you talk to Charlie about the party. I said no I haven’t, she said you haven’t yet?! Laura said I phoned to give you the address of the farm we’re going to for Carrie’s party. The farm is in Maple Ridge. She said Jolene was coming so they should be able to find it. I said a lot better than Paul! Laura said I hope because of what Paul did at Alex’s party it won’t threaten our friendship. She said I think Charlie is still sore about it. I said well this isn’t the first time he’s done it, it’s happened twice now.
After I got off the phone I told Charlie what she had said. Charlie said he wasn’t going because they hadn’t come to Alex’s party twice.
I find it really irritating myself that they didn’t turn up after going to McDonald’s for Alex’s fourth birthday. I had no idea why they didn’t come to our house for cake and ice cream until later we found out that Paul couldn’t find our house. Then for Alex’s fifth birthday, Paul couldn’t find McDonald’s or our house. For me that really did it.
We went to Metrotown in the afternoon. We shopped on the Eaton Centre side, the Sears side is not connected to it. Sears section must be loosing money.
We came home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at six o’clock.
Mom phoned while we were having dinner. She said they were going to the neighbour’s for their daughters birthday party. Then she asked me how Kelly was doing, I told her that the vet said Kelly must have a growth because of his blood test. I said I didn’t like his answer since he can’t tell me exactly where it is.

I wrote in the journal after I had done the dishes and swept the floor.
In the afternoon Patrick came over to play.
Kelly’s still eating a lot of grass and he doesn’t look very well. I phoned the vet but Dr. H wasn’t in, he’ll be back on Monday. I asked to talk to Dr. R, the nurse said she would get him to phone me at five o’clock. I still hadn’t heard anything so I phoned back. The nurse said Dr. R was very busy and hadn’t been able to phone back. I told her I would be going out in the next few minutes so I didn’t want him phoning when we wasn’t home. The nurse said she would try to get him to phone in the next five or ten minutes. Dr. R did phone in about ten minutes. I explained to him that Kelly was throwing up from eating grass. Dr. R said the side effects from Rivotral are depression, sleeping all the time, not eating and drooling. Everything he mentioned Kelly has. Dr. R said to give Kelly 1 pill twice a day. I asked if I thought Kelly was about to have a seizure and I gave him a pill should I give him another one at his usual time. Dr. R said not unless he seemed like he needed it. It told him when I gave it to Kelly a couple of hours earlier he went to sleep. Dr. R said then he shouldn’t have another one at the usual time. He said you can’t hurt them by giving them more.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 15, 1989
I woke up just after eight o’clock. I had my breakfast and read for awhile then I gave Kelly his pill and had my shower.
Alex woke up around nine thirty. I gave him his breakfast, he’s been wanting hot cereal for the last week or more.
Kelly sure isn’t feeling well today, it really pains me to see him like that. Yesterday after having his second pill, Kelly starting panting and breathing quite heavily. Today he’s trying to throw up but nothing comes up. It’s rather surprising since he did have his dog food this morning. He keeps on going outside and chomping down grass like he just couldn’t get enough.
After lunch I took Alex to his last gym class. I went to K-Mart and bought Dad his video game. Dad had said he wanted to get Zelda next, so that’s what we got him. Then I went to Safeway to buy milk and bread.
Alex said he really liked his class, the teacher gave them a piece of gum and a sticker. We came home after his class. Alex phoned Patrick but he had gone to someone else’s house.
Alex watched tv while I wrote in the journal. He seemed to be quite tired today, he laid on our bed and watched tv.
We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner Charlie, Alex and Kelly went for a walk. First of all Kelly didn’t seem to want to go, he sure is feeling sick. He was outside earlier chomping down grass. Kelly did throw up but it was just grass that came up. When Kelly came back from his walk he was drooling. It’s hard to know if it’s from the growth or from the medicine.
We watched tv then it was time for Alex to go to bed. It took him an hour since he wanted to play on his bed. He tends to take longer and longer playing. He was really making me mad, I told him from now on, no more playing just before you go to bed. By the time he was in bed it was ten o’clock.
I went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 14, 1989
I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
I phoned to make an appointment with Dr. C but all I could get as an extra. The receptionist said to come before noon.
I wrote in the journal for awhile. Mom phoned at eleven o’clock. She said Dad’s treatment had been cancelled because of the nurse’s strike. I told her about Kelly, I think it really upset her as she remembers how it was with Missy. I said I was waiting for the vet to phone back this afternoon.
We left to go to the doctors office. We had to wait a very long time. Dr. C checked me while Alex played in the hall. Dr. C said she thought it was from the pressure of the baby but she sent a sample to the lab. I told her I also felt like I had to go to the bathroom all the time. D. C said you should have a urine test as well.
By the time we got home it was after one thirty. I had lunch and Alex phoned Patrick to come over and play.
Morgan came to get Patrick at two o’clock. They had just gotten home. I think Morgan was happier to see Patrick than Patrick was to see her.
I phoned Dr. H, he said he compared the blood test to the one in March. The WBC was a lot higher than before which indicates a growth in Kelly’s body. He said it must be in his brain because of his eye sticking out further. The pancreas, liver and kidney were all okay, so something must be attacking his vomiting system. Then he said we would have to decide with Kelly what to do. If he had too many seizures, if he had to be sedated too much or if his quality of life wasn’t good. So all along he wasn’t epileptic, that makes me mad that it took a month and a half for them to figure out what was really wrong with Kelly. Dr. H said he was sorry to have to give us such bad news.
Talk about depressing news it’s hard to know what to think. When Charlie got home I told him what the vet had said. I said I wouldn’t be surprised if it hadn’t had something to do with the heavy power lines at the back. Charlie said it was just a coincident. I find it a bit hard to believe.
We went to the mall, had dinner and looked for the video game. K-Mart seems to be the cheapest place to buy it. We also bought Charlie’s Father’s Day present, he wanted a pair of shorts.
We got home at seven o’clock. I put away most of Alex’s toys. Alex put away the COPS stuff in the kitchen.
Alex got ready for bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at ten thirty.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 13, 1989
I woke up at nine o’clock. I sure had a good sleep for a change. Alex was still in bed. I had my breakfast but I hadn’t finished when Alex woke up. Alex said he wasn’t feeling good. I asked him if he had a headache or if his stomach hurt but Alex said no.
I gave Alex his breakfast, he wanted fruit cup but we didn’t have any so I had to give Alex canned pineapple. Alex also had hot cereal.
I said to Alex I was going to have a shower. Alex said he had to have one first. Luckily he didn’t take too long so there was enough hot water left.
I phoned Dr. H to let him know Kelly had another seizure last night. He phoned back after eleven o’clock. I also told him that Kelly couldn’t go on Biosol-M because when I give it to him he throws up right away. Dr. H didn’t seem to like that. He said he wanted me to bring Kelly in today to do some tests. I talked to the nurse and she checked with Dr. H who said Kelly could be dropped off while they do the tests. I said I would bring him in after lunch, the nurse said that would be fine.
Patrick had come over to play earlier. His Grandma phoned and asked if Patrick was there. I said yes and she said please send him home for lunch.
We had lunch then we took Kelly to the vet. The nurse said Dr. H would phone us later in the day. We came home.
Alex played for awhile then Patrick came over. I worked on Alex’s sweater I’m making him.
Dr. H phoned at two thirty. He said Kelly’s right eye was out and his abdomen was tender. Dr. H said he was sending Kelly’s blood test to another lab. He wanted to do an x-ray because of his eye, to see if there was anything there. I asked when I could get Kelly. He said in an hour. I said I would come at four o’clock.
When Charlie had come home from work I went to get Kelly. I saw Dr. H, he said nothing showed up on the x-ray but he wanted to wait for the blood test. He said Kelly can’t continue on having so many seizures. Pretty bad news for Kelly, it’s heart wrenching just thinking about him not being around.
After I got home I told Charlie wheat the vet had said. He was really upset, he said how can he say that it’s not his dog. I explained that ever time he has a seizure some of his brain cells die and he can’t continue on that way. Charlie said well he looks fine when he’s not having a seizure.
We at dinner at six o’clock. After dinner I worked on my knitting.
I talked to Dr. C at five o’clock. I’ve been having a pain in the lower region and I wanted to know if it was the same as the pain I had in the lower abdomen. Dr. C said no it wasn’t the same but she would have to look at me. She said it could be from the baby pushing down.
At seven o’clock Alex and I put away his toys. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I went to bed at ten thirty.

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.
After I had given Kelly his pills he threw up. I had talked to Dr. H yesterday. He had said to give Kelly Biosol-M again to help him get over his pancreatitis and to start on Rivotral, 1 pill twice daily. This morning when I gave Kelly the Biosol-M he threw up five minutes after he had it. I phoned the Animal Hospital and talked to Dr. H this morning. He said to stop the Biosol-M and to keep on giving the Rivotral twice daily.
I changed the sheets on our bed, did the laundry and did the dishes. Then I wrote in the journal.
After lunch Patrick came over to play. He left before three o’clock, he said he wanted to go home. We had to go out anyways so it worked out okay. Alex said he was too tired to go anywhere. I said that’s too bad because I have to buy milk. We stopped at Mom and Dad’s on the way back to pick up the video game. Alex played before we left.
On the way to the video store we saw Charlie but he didn’t see us.
We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner I exercised and put away Alex’s toys. Alex helped me about half way through.
Alex, Charlie and Kelly went for a walk at eight o’clock while I wrote in the journal.
Alex went to bed at eight thirty. We watched tv and I wrote in the journal.
Kelly had another seizure at nine o’clock. It took him about five minutes before he got up. He was breathing very fast after the seizure, it must be hard on his whole body. I gave Kelly a pill.

I woke up at five o’clock. I checked on Kelly, he was asleep by the front door so I went back to bed. It wasn’t any time when I heard a crash. I woke Charlie up to check on Kelly. I just can’t stand to see him like that. After that I didn’t sleep very well. I gave Kelly a valium before seven o’clock and let him out then went back to bed.
Alex woke me up at eight thirty, he wanted his breakfast. I got up, was I ever tired but I made our breakfast. Charlie slept until after ten o’clock.
I gave Kelly another pill around ten o’clock then I had a shower and got dressed.
I tided up the house, did the dishes and Alex’s laundry.
My leg is really bothering me, every time I get up I can hardly walk. I just don’t seem to be able to do very much.
Patrick came over in the afternoon to play with Alex. We sent him home around two o’clock. We went out to look at video games. Alex wants to buy one for Dad. On Friday Alex asked Pa for money to buy one. Charlie said they cost too much and he wasn’t giving him any money. Alex came to me to tell me this, he was so upset that he almost started to cry. I said you’re really upset you can’t get Grandpa a game aren’t you? Alex said yes he was and Pa isn’t getting anything for Father’s Day. I said maybe if you pay half Pa will consider buying it. Alex thought that was a good idea. Alex and Charlie agreed they would do that.
After looking at games Charlie thought we should rent one first. Then we went to the vet, the vet had left us a prescription. We went to Save On foods to fill it. The pills sure are expensive, $14.32 for pills and $.98 for dispensing it. Then we rented a video game and came home.
Charlie took the pine tree out of the backyard. It was all dried up, I think spiders had gotten it. I put the poppy’s in the spot.
We ate dinner before six o’clock. I did the dishes then we went to Mom and Dad’s. Alex and Dad play the game most of the time.

I woke up to hear Charlie vacuuming before nine o’clock. He never picks up Alex’s toys before he starts so I had to pick them up. When I was vacuuming I always did it before I started, it makes it a lot easier. Of course if there are toys in the spare room, Charlie just wouldn’t vacuum there. Alex helped me so that was good.
I had my breakfast, Charlie had already gotten Alex his breakfast.
I gave Kelly his pill, he had a seizure last night while we were out. I talked to the vet and he said to increase the dosage to three pills a day. Dr. H said once they’re on medication they shouldn’t have any seizures.
At eleven o’clock we left to go to Science World. Last year they had a dinosaur display but his year it was gone. I wasn’t impressed with it at all, I like last years a lot better. We went to the laser show but I had to leave, it started to make me feel dizzy. We left at two thirty.
We dropped my clothing off at Salvation Army then we went to Produce City to buy fruit. We came home around four o’clock.
Kelly must have had another seizure again. I called the vet but he was gone so I left a message.
I wrote in the journal then it was time to cook dinner. We ate before six o’clock. After dinner we watched tv. Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and wrote in the journal. Charlie fell asleep as usual and then wanted to know what happened in the movie. I went to bed at eleven thirty.

Alex woke me up at eight o’clock. He said he wanted his breakfast now. I told him his show COPS was on now and I would be there in a few minutes. I fell asleep but not for long as Alex came back. He was annoyed with me for going back to sleep. Alex said I want my breakfast. This time I had to get up, Alex wasn’t leaving the room until I got up.
I made breakfast for Alex and myself then I gave Kelly his pill and had a shower.
Alex played while I wrote in the journal. Alex phoned Patrick in the afternoon but he wasn’t home. We watched Cinderella, Alex didn’t want to watch it at first but he seemed to enjoy it once it was on.
Alex asked if he could phone Patrick again. It was an hour since he had phoned. I said one more time and that’s it. Alex said when he phoned, Patrick’s grandma answered the phone. She said Patrick was outside sitting on the bottom stair and she would tell Patrick.
Patrick and his grandma came over. She wanted to know if Patrick left his runners here. I said I remembered him going home with them yesterday. She said Alex can come to Patrick’s house you know. I said okay thanks.
They played until four o’clock then they went to Patrick’s house. Alex came home at four thirty. He said Patrick was going to Timothy’s house and I didn’t want to go. Alex also said he was mad at Patrick for pushing him off the bars. The bars are under their deck, sort of like a playhouse.
We went to Boston Pizza for dinner but stopped at TD bank first. At the restaurant Alex spilt his juice twice, first glass was on my arm and I had to change my chair. The second time Alex was reaching for the glass when he knocked it over. The juice went all over my purse and the chair it was on. The juice went inside my purse as well what a time we had! Alex said it’s not my fault you did it!
We went to Mom and Dad’s, Alex asked Dad to play a video game with him. Alex sure enjoys playing with Dad. We watched a video of Charlie’s company.

Alex woke me up just after eight o’clock. He’s been doing that for the last couple of days. He hasn’t slept in like he use to for quite awhile. Alex use to get up around ten o’clock. Of course it doesn’t help that he has a cold, the cough probably wakes him up.
Anyways I got up and made our breakfast, did the dishes, gave Kelly his pill and had a shower.
I still am really tired from vacuuming and my leg is painful, I can’t do much today. I wrote in the journal before lunch.
Marla phoned before lunch, she said she had planned on having us over for lunch today but they got a load of bark mulch. I said well I have to take Alex to his gym class this afternoon anyways. She asked if we cold come over next Wednesday. I said yes that should be okay.
After lunch I took Alex to his class and came home. Unfortunately I had to have white bread for lunch since the brown bread had mold on it. It made me feel pretty bad. I exercised after I got home, took my blood and wrote in the journal.
Alex and I went to Save On Foods to buy bread. Alex wanted to buy Shreddies cereal, they have Turtle stickers inside. I said we could buy it since you’ve almost finished the other box.
Alex phoned Patrick when we got home, he came over shortly afterwards. At three thirty Timothy came to play as well.
I found a spot of blood when I went to the bathroom. I phoned and left a message for the doctor.
Alex and I went to McDonalds for dinner. Charlie had gone to get his hair permed. When we got home Alex went to play in his sandbox and I exercised.
Dr. C phoned while I was exercising, she said to tell the answering service I was a maternity patient of hers and I would be able to talk to her. Dr. C phoned about five minutes later. She said to watch and see if any more appears. Dr. C said at 21 weeks there isn’t too much to be done. She said it could be caused from a blood vessel or hemorrhoids.
Alex and I watched tv, Charlie came home at eight o’clock. Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched tv and wrote in the journal. I went to bed at eleven thirty.

Alex and I watched tv, Charlie came home at eight o’clock. Alex went to bed at eight thirty. I watched tv and wrote in the journal. I went to bed at eleven thirty.

Alex woke me up at eight o’clock, he said he wanted his breakfast. I got up and made our breakfast. Then I gave Kelly his pill, had a shower and got dressed.
I feel really tired today, it was a mistake to vacuum yesterday but I was quite energetic yesterday. My leg is painful today which tends to tire me out. Charlie doesn’t understand that I can’t do any house work and he’s not too thrilled to do it himself. The house gets really dirty before he does anything about it. Charlie’s excuse is he works all week. What about me, I use to work and do the housework!
In the afternoon Patrick came over to play. I wrote in the journal most of the afternoon.
Charlie came home at four o’clock. Alex and Patrick went to Patrick’s house just after Charlie got home. Alex came home at five o’clock. He said Patrick’s parents have gone away for seven sleeps and his grandparents were looking after them.
We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner I exercised, did the dishes, cleaned up the kitchen and put away Alex’s toys. Alex isn’t feeling very well, he has a cold and a cough. I gave him cold medicine this afternoon.
Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I wrote in the journal, watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 6, 1989
I woke up to the alarm at seven thirty. I did my tests and was just about to make breakfast when Alex came out of his room. It’s pretty early for Alex to be up.
We had our breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. Alex was glad he had gotten up early, he was able to watch COPS.
We left at nine fifteen for Royal Columbian Hospital. I was going to park in the underground parking but I remembered I didn’t have enough money so we parked on the street. It was quite a walk to the main entrance. We were late by the time we walked there.
There wasn’t anyone in the waiting room but we had to wait for awhile. First I saw Ann, she weighed me, my weight was the same. Then she had me test my urine, there was a slight trace of glucose in my urine. She said my counts were good then I saw Dr. B. Alex had come with me. I introduced Alex to the doctor. Dr. B talked with Alex for awhile then she checked my blood pressure it was 130/70. She felt the baby and tried to hear the baby’s heartbeat but she said it was too early. Dr. B said my counts were good and asked if my technique was okay. I said it was okay. She said then you can come in a month for the next three months. If you gain a lot of weight, your blood sugar goes too high or you have any questions call us. She said to test my blood two days a week but space the days don’t do two days together. So my next appointment is on July 4 at 9:30 a.m.
We sat in the waiting room for Ellie to call us. It was hard having Alex there. He was talking quite loud and made it difficult for me to talk to the people.
When I saw the dietician I asked if I could go back to 2% milk and omit the afternoon milk as well as put the protein back to breakfast time. Ellie said that should be okay but to watch that I don’t start putting on too much weight.
Then we were able to leave except we had to come back since I realized I didn’t have enough sheets to keep the blood sugar readings.
We got home before eleven o’clock. Alex wanted to go to the park but he hadn’t been doing what I wanted and he called me a few bad names.
Alex played in his room while I vacuumed the house. I won’t be able to do it very often, it really bothers my leg. I know I’ll pay for it later but Charlie didn’t vacuum the house for more than a week.
After lunch Alex phoned Patrick, he said he would be over after lunch. They played until three o’clock when Patrick said he wanted to go home. Alex said I’m letting Patrick go home this time. He seemed quite pleased with himself. I said does Patrick want you to go to his house? Alex asked Patrick and he said he did.
I wrote in the journal while Alex was gone. Charlie came home at four o’clock. At five o’clock I phoned Morgan and asked her to send Alex home.

I woke up at eight o’clock. Alex woke up while I was having my breakfast. When I was finished eating I made Alex’s breakfast. Then I did the dishes and tided up the kitchen. I gave Kelly his medicine, had a shower and got dressed. Alex had a shower as well and got dressed.
We left before ten o’clock for the doctors office. It was my turn to see Dr. C today. I had gained two pounds so that was pretty good. Dr. C said she was happy with my weight and the way everything was going. She said it looks like the diet is helping.
Alex got a balloon and then we came home. I tided up the house before lunch. After lunch I exercised and wrote in the journal. I have most of March, April and May to finish. I was so tired during that time I just couldn’t do it. The first few months I was tired from the hormonal changes. Then the third month I was tired every time I ate. It wasn’t until I went on the diabetic diet that I started feeling better. If I had known I would have tried it before. Bread was the worse thing it made me feel so tired. I could hardly stay awake. I should have been on the diet in April but I couldn’t get an appointment for six weeks.
Alex phoned Patrick but Patrick said he had to wait for his Grandparents to come. Alex was quite upset since he was hoping Patrick would watch the Turtle movie with him we had rented yesterday. Alex kept on asking me if he could phone Patrick back. Alex thought that Patrick meant, he would come later but he had to stay and visit with his Grandparents first.
Charlie came home at four o’clock. I was on the phone with Mom. She said did you know there’s a really nice London Drugs on North Road. I said yes I thought you knew there was one there. Mom said she didn’t know about it.
We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner I exercised and tided up the house. Charlie and Alex took Kelly for a walk while I put away Alex’s toys.

Alex woke me up at eight thirty, he said he wanted his breakfast. I got up to make it when Kelly started to complain. I had to get dressed to let him out in the front. Kelly had been sick again, he threw up by the door.
I made Alex and my breakfast, did the dishes, gave Kelly his medicine and had a shower.
We left at eleven thirty for Como Lake. They were having remote control sailing boats.
Alex and I went to the playground and walked around the lake while Charlie drove to the other side and parked the car. The boats were nothing special they sailed the boats around the lake. I thought they would be having a race.
We went to Lougheed mall to have lunch and for Charlie to buy a pair of shoes. We got home before two o’clock. I wrote in the journal and sat outside.
Alex and I came in at three o’clock to watch the end of the telethon but it wasn’t on.
We started to cook dinner shortly after we had come in, we had BBQ steak.
After dinner I exercised then I phoned Mom to make sure it was okay if we came down, Alex has a cold and I didn’t want Dad to get it. Mom said it was okay as long as Alex didn’t kiss Grandpa.
We watched a movie we had rented with Mom and Dad; Gorilla’s in the Mist.
We got home at eleven o’clock. Alex wanted to watch his movie. I said he could watch some of it then I wanted him to get ready for bed. Alex said he would. When I told him it was time he said he had to have a snack. Then Alex got ready for bed but he wanted to play in his room first. I said no that it was late, eleven thirty already. Alex was really upset and started to cry. He said if he couldn’t play he would kick and punch. I told him to get to bed right now! Finally Alex went to bed, I went to bed after I gave Kelly his pill.

I woke up at nine o’clock. I woke Alex up and told him his show was on, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Then we had breakfast, Alex got dressed while I had a shower and got dressed.
I did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen while Charlie and Alex put away the toys. When I was finished I helped them.
We left after eleven o’clock to the Dogwood parade. Luckily we were able to get a place under the shade. The parade started on time and was just the right length to me. Charlie thought it was too short.
We went to Loughed mall after and had lunch. I bought a pair of thongs then we went home.
It sure is hot today, I sat outside in the shade and wrote in the journal. It’s too hot for me in the house. Alex and Charlie came to see what I was doing. Alex raked the garden, he sure does good work.
We left at four thirty for Hon Lok. After dinner we stopped at the Chew’s. Cindy is due already but she hasn’t had the baby yet. Laura said the baby is already engaged so it should be any minute now.
They were going to Clyde’s for a BBQ. His daughter is one year old now. They invited us to come along but we didn’t want to go. I would rather be invited by the people themselves.
When we got home we watched Children’s Miracle Network Telethon. I wrote in the journal most of the night.

Alex woke up at nine thirty. He said he had to have his shower right now. After Alex had his shower, gotten dressed, I made Alex his breakfast.
We went to White Pine Beach in the morning. There were quite a few people there already. Alex had a lot of fun playing in the sand. He made wholes in the sand and poured water into them. Alex sure made a lot of lakes!
We came home at one o’clock. Alex phoned Patrick after lunch and asked him if he could ride his bike. When Patrick came he didn’t bring his bike. They played inside while I sat outside, Charlie was inside with them.
Charlie left for work at two thirty. I had my snack and wrote in the journal.
Just after four o’clock I heard one of the kids crying. It was Patrick he wanted to go home but Alex wouldn’t open the door so he could leave. I told Alex to open the door and when your friends want to go home you have to let them go. Alex was really mad, he went to run after Patrick. He said he was going to punch Patrick for leaving. Alex was so upset he started to cry, he said he wanted Patrick to stay and play. I tried to make him understand that when someone wants to go home, you have to let them. Maybe they want to see their mother or they just want to go home. Alex was still mad but he calmed down.
I started to cook dinner, we ate at five o’clock. We went to McDonalds, Alex had an ice cream cone and played in the playroom. Then we went to Safeway to buy milk and came home.

We all went outside, it’s really nice today. Charlie washed his car while I swept the garage and tided it up. Alex did a lot of work. He rode his bike, watered the garden, raked the garden and painted a box.
After lunch I took Alex to his class. First we picked up Mom, after we had dropped Alex off we went to the mall. I bought Shirley her birthday present and card. Mom bought Dad a billiard video tape for Father’s Day. We picked up Alex from his class and Mom saw where Alex went for gym class. Then we went to Van city, Mom wanted to deposit a cheque.
We went back to Mom and Dad’s. The people were there pouring the cement for the sidewalk and the extension for the driveway.
Mom asked us to stay for dinner, we had steak, fries and peas, for dessert ice cream which I didn’t have.
We left before six o’clock, so I could tape the news for Charlie. I was really tired and I had a headache. I seem to get headaches when I’m hungry.

I woke up at eight thirty. I took my blood, had breakfast, gave Kelly his pill and had my shower. I sure was tired, Alex woke me up three times last night. The first time Alex woke me up at one o’clock, he said he couldn’t sleep anymore. I took Alex back to his room and asked him why he couldn’t sleep. Alex said he couldn’t sleep unless he had a snack. I said okay lets go into the kitchen and get you a snack. Alex had six crackers and a cup of juice, then he went back to bed in his own bed.
The second time Alex woke me up at three o’clock. I told him to get into bed with us, I was too tired to get up.
The third time Alex woke up at five o’clock. He said he was too hungry and wanted something to eat. I said there was no way I was getting up I needed to sleep some more. Charlie said he would get up and get Alex something to eat. Alex was really mad that I wouldn’t get up. He stamped his feet, yelled and screamed then went into his room and slammed the door.
I went back to sleep and woke up again at eight thirty. I could have slept longer but I have to eat at a certain time with the diet from the diabetic clinic. My eating times are 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
I found out later that Alex went back to sleep after he had woken us up at 5:00 a.m. and went back to bed in his own bed.
Charlie was really tired since once he’s woken up in the morning he can’t get back to sleep.
In the morning I didn’t do too much. I did the dishes and tided up the house.
In the afternoon Patrick came over to play with Alex. Around two thirty I told Alex he should go to Patrick’s house for awhile. Alex said okay as long as he could bring his Lego vehicle. When they left Alex said remember to phone me. I said yes, do you want me to call you when it’s dinner time? Alex said okay.
I watched tv and wrote in the journal while Alex was at Patrick’s house.
Alex came home after four o’clock. He was really upset, he said Patrick kept on fighting with him. He also said when he left Patrick wouldn’t help him find his Lego man. I asked him if he got it and he said yes. Before he had left Patrick went outside to ride his bike.
We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner we went downstairs to exercise. Then we watched tv and of course we watched Cosby!
