Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 20, 1988

I woke up before eight o’clock, gave Alex his breakfast, got dressed and vacuumed the house. After I had finished I had a shower and got dressed. I phoned Allison to make sure we were still getting together and she said to come over any time. I wasn’t quite ready yet as my shorts were not dry yet. I put them in the sun to dry then I did my hair and got Alex ready to go.

We left at twelve thirty, Kurt’s friend Meagan was there and Alex was really silly in front of her. It seemed like he was trying to show off. Meagan said to me Alex sure is silly. She’s probably never seen anyone quite like Alex! We had our lunch as soon as we got in, Alex wouldn’t settle down which made it harder on the other two to eat properly. I kept on telling Alex to settle down or we would be going home but it didn’t seem to do much good. After lunch the kids went outside to play in the sandbox and Alex threw sand at Meagan which started Kurt to do the same thing. They just wouldn’t stop so Allison had to close the sandbox. They then went into the pool and Alex chase both of them especially Meagan with the water. This is getting to be a bit much! We left their house after four o’clock and Charlie was already home.

Shirley had phoned while we were out and said she would be over between five and five thirty. Marla also called and said to phone when I had a free minute. I phoned her back she said she probably couldn’t make it on Friday as she had to register herself for school. We decided to make it for Tuesday.

I got ready to go out for dinner with Shirley. I made the mistake of asking Charlie if I could use his car since it was so hot. I thought Alex realized that I was going out with Shirley and that I was leaving him at home. Alex had heard the recording of Shirley’s message that we were going out but when I asked Charlie about the car, Alex had an absolute fit. He ran after me as I went down the hall and said don’t leave me, don’t leave me. Then he started to cry, he must of cried for about half an hour before he calmed down. He didn’t even want to talk to Charlie. It was as if he was mad at Charlie that he had to stay with him. He was still crying when Shirley came in, I hadn’t even been able to get dressed yet. Alex held on to my neck so tight that I could hardly breathe. Alex came into our room while I got dressed and I sat with him on our bed and told him that there was no need for him to act that way. He was going to be with his Papa and they would have a good time while I was out. I told him that Pa was going to take him somewhere and probably buy him something if he was going to be good. After that Alex realized I was going out and he seemed to accept the fact.

We left around six o’clock, I figured P.J.’s would be nice and cool but they don’t have air conditioning! We didn’t stay there very long, I couldn’t stand the heat. We went to the theatre to see Short Circuit 2. Shirley said since we were her for the early show why didn’t we see a late show as well. So we saw Coming to America. They were both really good movies but I liked Coming to America a lot better.

We got home at eleven thirty, Charlie was fast asleep on the couch. He had left me a note that he hadn’t given Alex his medicine as he didn’t know what to give him. That really irritated me, he just doesn’t want to know is all it is. I have to do it all the time and I don’t get any relief. Shirley had to make a phone call so while she was doing that I woke Charlie up to tell him we were home. He got mad at me and said he had no idea what to give him. I then told him Shirley was in the kitchen, he said where? I told him on the phone, he seemed rather embarrassed that he had raised his voice! Charlie went to bed, Shirley left shortly afterwards. She said Aaron would be over on Friday with Chris’ cake, I told her that was fine.

I watched TV for a little while then I went to bed.
