Diagnosis: Leukemia; July 5, 1988

I woke up at eight o’clock and woke Alex up to have a shower. We have to be at the hospital at nine thirty, so we have to hurry this morning.

I got Alex dressed and gave him some juice, he said he didn’t want breakfast. I got dressed and we left for the hospital at nine o’clock.

We were late but nobody seemed to care. The hospital was pretty full so we sat near the LP room. We waited fifteen minutes before Mary called us to get Alex’s blood. Alex complained that it was going to hurt. Mary told him that he’s always so brave and that it doesn’t hurt. She asked him if he had forgotten. Alex said he had.

We went to the waiting room and Alex played with the toys.

Dr. S called us into an examining room. She said she didn’t have Alex’s blood count yet.

I told the doctor that Alex had thrown up once when he was coughing. She didn’t have anything to say about it.

I asked Dr. S if we could have our next appointment delayed as we wanted to go away. She said it should be alright but she wanted to see Alex’s blood count before doing it and the prescription.

I asked the doctor if I could give Alex his prednisone twice a day instead of three times a day. Dr. S said they usually do that only when a child is having trouble taking his medicine.

I also asked her when Alex could go back swimming. She said it wouldn’t be advisable for Alex to go swimming until his treatment was finished. Dr. S said if Alex was to go swimming and got an infection he would have to have his treatment stopped.

Dr. S said Alex would be able to go to a water park or the beach. When he was at the beach he shouldn’t put his head in the water.

I told Dr. S that Alex said his nose was really itchy. She said he might have an allergy.

Dr. S said that they would be getting ready for Alex’s LP.

Sheila came into the clinic while we were waiting. The kids sure love her, she really makes them feel good.

I asked Sheila about the study in the United States about children living near power lines that were prone to cancer. Sheila said she knew of it but it was in the early stages. I told her after we had moved we realized we were across the street from power lines. Then after four months Alex got cancer. Sheila said it might or might not of had anything to do with Alex getting cancer.

We went into the pain room for Alex’s LP. Alex had his LP sitting up, he did very well, he sure is brave. Alex only cried when the doctor put the needle in for the freezing. The nurse read a pop-up-book during the procedure.

After it was over I took Alex out to the waiting area and put him on a bed. I had a difficult time to get him to lie down. I had given him Winston (a Ghostbusters guy) and he didn’t want to lie down. I had to keep telling Alex to lie down on the bed!

I told Alex I was going to get his prescription. Alex cried and told me not to leave him. He sure was upset that I was leaving him there. I talked to him for quite awhile before I went I wanted to make sure he wanted me to go to the Pharmacy. Alex said it was alright as long as I went very fast. I told him I would go to the Pharmacy and come right back.

I bought Alex a Dinosaur placemat at the small store, while I waited for the prescription to be ready.

When I came back Alex wasn’t in his bed. I asked Lorraine where Alex was and she said Gee, I don’t know. Then one of the other mother’s said she saw the nurses take Alex into the room for his I.V. I couldn’t believe Lorraine, she then said I’m glad we didn’t have to get alarmed. Give me a break!

I went in to see Alex and Lenore was giving Alex his I.V., another nurse was holding Alex. They both said I ruined their surprise, they were going to give Alex his I.V. without me. It took them three tries before they got the I.V. in Lenore had to put it in Alex’s foot, Alex didn’t like that at all.

Alex cried when Lenore put the I.v. in for the second and third time.

Alex got a prize from the treasure box when it was all over.

Dr. S gave us our appointment for five weeks which is really good.

We left after one o’clock, we stopped at McDonald’s for lunch. After lunch Alex wanted to go to the mall. We didn’t stay long as Alex seemed quite tired.

We got home around three o’clock, Alex watched TV. when we got home.

Charlie got home at four o’clock. He made diner for us which was really nice.

After dinner we watched TV. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV. and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
