Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 31, 1989

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

All week I’ve been cleaning the house; the bathrooms, dusting all the furniture and washing all the floors. I’m trying to get the house nice and clean for Alex’s birthday party. My leg has been quite sore from all the work. When I was pregnant with Alex, Dr. W told me it was because the sciatic nerve is pinched. It puts pain in my back and it travels down my leg. It is usually the right leg that is affected. My mother had it during her pregnancies as well as Blair and Joan.

Charlie got home at four o’clock. We went out for dinner then we went to the mall and came home.

Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 30, 1989

I woke up to the alarm at seven o’clock. We have to be at the hospital at nine o’clock this morning.

I had a shower, got dressed then I woke Alex up. He wasn’t too pleased about me waking him up but there’s nothing I can do about it.

We had breakfast, Alex didn’t eat very much as he said he would get something at the cafeteria!

We left after eight o’clock. When we got there the clinic was pretty busy. It wasn’t very long before Alex had his blood test done. Then we had to wait a long time before anything else was done.

Karen (a new nurse) asked the routine questions. I told her about Brent having scarlet fever and about Kelly having a kidney infection. Karen said she hadn’t heard of scarlet fever for a very long time. I said well this child has had it twice now. She said that’s really unusual and that Alex should be okay. Karen said with our dog we should wash our hands and that he shouldn’t be contagious.

Before eleven o’clock Mary gave me Alex’s blood count. Alex’s ANC level was below 1000 so I thought Alex wouldn’t have his LP. At eleven o’clock Joanne said she had checked with Dr. Ch and he said it was okay. I wasn’t too pleased since in the past Dr. S said below 1000 the LP couldn’t be done or it could cause infection.

Dr. S wasn’t there this week. The doctor doing the LP I had never seen before. I asked the doctor before he started whether or not it was okay to do an LP when the ANC was below 1000. I told him what Dr. S had told me before. The doctor said he would phone Dr. Ch but I told him Joanne had already phoned. This doctor told me that they didn’t do it below 500 but it is safe between 500 and 900.

There really wasn’t a heck of a lot I could say. I could have refused having the LP done but I do trust their judgement. I’m sure Joanne thought that I was being ridiculous but that’s too bad. I want to make sure of these things first.

I told Joanne I wouldn’t be able to hold Alex so she went to get another nurse. Joanne held Alex while I sat beside him and Lorraine read Alex stories. They had quite a time getting Alex in the right position and when the doctor put his finger on Alex’s back Alex yelled that hurts! I told Alex that was just the doctors finger but he didn’t seem to believe me. The doctor said maybe it would be better if Alex laid down on his side and the nurse held him. I said that’s even worse and Alex agreed. Finally it was over with and Alex got to lay down. I entertained Alex for quite awhile. It’s pretty hard to get Alex to stay lying down.

Dr. P asked us to come into the examining room. I had to carry Alex which really bothered my back. Dr. P said Dr. S and Dr. R were both away. The doctor checked Alex and I told her Alex had a cough again similar to the cough he had in November. Dr. P said it would be better to decrease the dosage on his medication. Dr. P changed his Mercaptopurine to ¾ of a pill alternating with 1 pill daily, and Methotrexiate to 4 ½ pills weekly. Prednisone stays the same at six pills daily for 5 days and Bactrim ¼ pill twice daily. Bactrim was one pill twice daily but it was paediatric pills. The pharmacy didn’t have paediatric pills so we had to take adult pills but the dosage is the same.

I got Alex to lay down on the bed while I went to the Pharmacy. When I came back Alex was playing on the bed but he was lying down which is important. After having an LP if you don’t lie down you can get a migraine which is suppose to last for a couple of days.

I went back to the pharmacy since it was getting close to them closing for lunch. The pharmacist said the doctor had forgotten to write down Bactrim and did I need any. I said I did I’ve almost run out. She said she would phone the doctor, they don’t have paediatric Bactrim anymore the company stopped making it. I told her I would get a prescription from Dr. P and come back.

I’m beginning to feel like a yoyo. The clinic and the pharmacy are a fair walk between the two. When I got back to the clinic, Alex was calling for me. I told him I had to talk to the doctor and go back to the pharmacy because the doctor forgot to give me a prescription for Bactrim. Alex was upset that I had to go again but there wasn’t much I could do about it.

Dr. P gave me the prescription for Bactrim, she said you might as well have a years supply that way you won’t have to worry about running out for awhile.

When I got back to the pharmacy the pharmacist said it probably would be after lunch. I said I might come back tomorrow then.

I wasn’t feeling that good, my leg was bothering me, my stomach was upset and I was really tired.

Finally I was able to stay with Alex. He kept on asking for different toys to play with then it was time for Alex’s arm poke. Krisann does it now, she said Alex had fallen asleep when I was at the pharmacist and woken up calling for me. Alex must of wondered where he was and where I was.

We left after twelve o’clock. We stopped at the mall on the way home. Alex picked out Checkpoint of COPS as a prize. We came home, we didn’t get home until after two o’clock. Charlie came home at four o’clock.

We ate dinner at five o’clock, after dinner we watched tv. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I went to bed at ten o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I went to see Dr. C this afternoon, yesterday I had been having pains in my lower abdomen. I had phoned Dr. C and asked her if it was normal. Dr. C said it wasn’t normal and I should come in and have it checked. I said I tried to make an appointment but the nurse said you were fully booked. Dr. C put me on hold while she went to the front desk. Then she told me to come tomorrow afternoon.

Dr. C checked me and she said that it could be a cyst in the uterus. She couldn’t find anything. Dr. C said everything looks okay, it could be that the uterus is stretching to make room for the baby. She said it is different in the second pregnancy. Dr. C said she wanted to know about the pain if it happens again.

I picked up Alex from Mom and Dad’s, we came home. We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner we watched tv. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I went to bed at ten o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

I still don’t feel right after I eat. It seems like pancakes are the only breakfast food that sits well with me. It’s later after I eat that I feel extremely tired and I feel sluggish. I sure don’t remember feeling this tired when I was pregnant with Alex. When I was pregnant with Alex I was working 5 days a week. I remember when I got home from work, I had dinner and went to bed. So maybe I was really tired but I’ve forgotten how much!

Kurt came over in the afternoon to play with Alex. They played well together, hardly any fights. I helps that Alex isn’t taking Prednisone at this time. It sure changes he’s mood and makes him very irritable.

We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner we watched tv. Alex went to bed eight o’clock.

In the afternoon we went to Mom and Dad’s. Alex wanted to play with Karen before she went home. She’s suppose to go home tomorrow or the day after. While we were there Paul and Jay came. They were down for Jay’s soccer game. Blair and Holly didn’t come with them. Paul had promised to take Jay to a baseball game at the Dome. Blair and Holly are planning on going to Edmonton mall later in the year.

We came home around three o’clock. Karen came with us. I phoned Mom to let her know that Karen was staying for dinner.

Kurt came over to play with Alex. Alex told him that his cousin was here and she was older than him. Kurt said oh yeah. Kurt sure was surprised when he saw Karen. I don’t think he was expecting Alex’s cousin to be that big. The three of them played together, Kurt seemed to be a bit scared of Karen. It was rather amusing.

We ate dinner at six o’clock. I took Karen to Mom and Dad’s at nine o’clock.

Then Alex collected the chocolate eggs around the house. Alex said the Easter bunny sure is silly, he puts chocolate eggs in my drawers especially my underwear drawer.

We ate breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

In the afternoon we went to Mom and Dad’s. They invited us for Easter dinner, Karen was there as well.

Alex had a lot of fun playing with Karen. It sure helped me out, they must have played the whole time we were there.

Alex played most of the afternoon in the spare room. He hasn’t seen much of his friends lately. I think sometimes kids need a break from each other. They play so much together then they start fighting. So I don’t think it hurts for them not to play with each other for awhile. Alex still likes to have me close by, sometimes I think he would rather play by himself and know that I’m close by. I’m sure it has to do with everything he has gone through.

Dr. H phoned this morning, he said the test results showed that Kelly has a kidney infection. He said he wants Kelly to start on antibiotics which I could pick up today. This should stop the seizures. The reason why Kelly was having seizures was that he wasn’t getting enough blood to his brain due to the infection in his kidney. It was a relief he didn’t have a tumour, I don’t think I could of handled that right now.

I picked up the medicine after lunch. It has to be given every eight hours so we figure two o’clock p.m., midnight and eight o’clock a.m. Charlie said he would give Kelly his midnight pill.

Charlie took Kelly to the vet this morning. Kelly had a seizure last night. It has to be one of the most horrible things to watch since you can’t do anything but wait. Kelly also had one this morning. On the stairs. I had talked to a vet last night, he said he could have epilepsy but couldn’t be sure. This morning I talked to the Animal Hospital, they said they didn’t have an appointment available until this afternoon. I told them Charlie was going to work in the afternoon. They said we could bring Kelly in but we would have to leave him there until someone could look at him.

Dr. H phoned in the afternoon. He said Kelly’s blood count was quite low and he was possibly anemic. Dr. H said Kelly could have a tumour, kidney problem or epilepsy. He wanted to send a blood sample to another lab first. Dr. H wanted to keep him overnight but I said I wanted to take him home. Dr. H said to give him until four o’clock.

With Alex I couldn’t eat beef, eggs or spicy food and I ate very healthy food. I usually ate hot cereal for breakfast then a bran muffin. For lunch I would have a sandwich and later an apple. For dinner I would eat a salad and cottage cheese.

I made pancakes for breakfast, Alex and I ate some. Charlie still wasn’t back yet. I didn’t’ use the whole batter, I saved the rest for tomorrow. I had a shower and got dressed. By that time Charlie had come back from grocery shopping.

Mom phoned to tell us Dad was home now. I said are you going grocery shopping. Mom said no. I said why? Then she said very quietly Dad’s not too good. He sobbed and sobbed when I got him home.

Mom phoned back later to ask if one of us was going shopping. I said I didn’t know, why? Mom said she needed one dozen oranges and vanilla ice cream. Mom said she wanted to start Dad on milk shakes to fatten him up.

I asked Charlie if he could go I didn’t feel up to going. Kurt was over playing with Alex anyways.

Kurt went home at noon. Charlie came home soon afterwards.

After lunch Kurt phoned to ask if he could come over to Alex’s house again. I told Alex he could go over to Kurt’s house instead. It seems that Kurt comes over more.

We went out at two o’clock. I had phoned the Andrew’s to send Alex home.

We went to the new mall downtown that’s connected to Pacific Centre. I had to have something to eat right away. Alex hadn’t had lunch so he had something as well. We didn’t stay very long, it was pretty crowded. Anyways I can’t walk around too long, I started to feel sick.

After going for a drive, we went to a Won Ton House for dinner. It was too early really to have dinner. We didn’t eat much but took the rest home. We stopped at Mom and Dad’s for awhile.

Dad hugged me and held onto me for quite awhile. He seemed to be quite emotional but he has been through a lot and with all the medicine he was taking it’s no wonder. Dad has lost a lot of weight he looks quite thin.

Kurt phoned at nine thirty. Alex told him he hadn’t had breakfast so he couldn’t play. When Alex hung up I told him why didn’t you tell Kurt you could play after you had breakfast. Alex phoned back to tell Kurt that but Kurt said he could play tomorrow not now. Alex was mad when he got off the phone.

Alex got dressed, watched COPS and played. I watched tv and relaxed.

Shirley phoned at eleven o’clock to tell me Brent has scarlet fever. Luckily we haven’t seen him but I did see Shirley on Monday. She said their doctor said we couldn’t get it unless we came in direct contact with Brent.

I phoned Children’s Hospital to make sure. I talked to Heather, she said it would have to be direct contact. She also said Alex is on Bactrim which stops infection like that.

I’m concerned about the baby. I did have contact with Shirley so it makes me wonder. Then this afternoon my throat started to bother me which is one of the symptoms. Of course Alex has a cold and a cough so it could be from him.

After lunch I asked Alex to put away his toys. It took him an hour and with a lot of complaining.

I phoned Dad at three o’clock but he said he would phone me back. He phoned back fifteen minutes later. Dad said he had been waiting to talk to Dr. J. The clinic phoned and said Dr. J said the doctors at the hospital would look after his PT level.

Dad seemed quite upset that they would do it that way. What he wanted to know was how much he should take during the weekend. In a few days it went from 12.5 to 17.0. He was concerned that it would go too high.

Charlie got home after four o’clock. We went to McDonald’s for dinner. Charlie wanted to go to the mall but I didn’t feel up to it. I was too tired.

Diagnosis Leukemia; March 6, 1989

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

We didn’t go visit Dad today, since Charlie is on dayshift. Dad isn’t up to having any children around just yet.

When Mom got home from seeing Dad she phoned me. She said that Dad’s still quite depressed and he’s not eating. He says he doesn’t have an appetite at all. Mom said she’s going to buy him a bottle of an energy drink.

Charlie came home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at five thirty. We watched tv after dinner. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 5, 1989

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had breakfast and a shower. Alex was up shortly after me and had breakfast with me.

We left at ten o’clock for the hospital. Dad’s still feeling pretty badly but his coloring is getting better. On Friday his coloring was greyish but today it’s more normal color.

Dad acts quite ornery, he tells Mom to do a lot of things and is forever poking her.

Charlie and Alex came back at three o’clock. We left shortly afterwards, we picked up chicken on the way home. We went to Mom and Dad’s and ate dinner there. We didn’t stay very long Mom’s pretty tired. Alex went to bed at nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

Joan was already there when we arrived. She had come down by herself. Charlie and Alex stayed a short while then they left.

At noon when lunch came for Dad we went to the cafeteria. Dad didn’t want his lunch mind you it’s mostly liquids.

Joan stayed until two o’clock to catch the ferry. Charlie and Alex came back around three o’clock, then it was time we all left.

We asked Mom if she wanted to go out for dinner with us but she said she wasn’t hungry and just wanted to go home.

After we had taken Mom home we went out for dinner, we came home shortly afterwards.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 3, 1989

I woke up to the phone ringing at five thirty this morning. Charlie answered the phone, he said Mom asked if I could let Geordie out that they were at Eagle Ridge Hospital. I couldn’t figure out what had happened and why they hadn’t gone to UBC Hospital. I went back to bed, not that I slept that well. I woke up at eight o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

Mom phoned to say they were still at Eagle Ridge Hospital. She said she had phoned for an ambulance at three o’clock this morning. I said you should have called us. Mom said she didn’t want to bother us! Mom asked me to phone Jeff and asked him if he could stay with Dad for awhile. Mom said the doctor in the emergency ward said he thought Dad had kidney stones. That seemed rather strange to me considering he had just had surgery on Monday.

Alex and I went to Mom and Dad’s and let Geordie out. I phoned Jeff to ask him if he could go to the hospital. He said he would be able to. I told him Mom said she would phone back around noon.

Alex and I went to McDonald’s for breakfast. While we were having breakfast I thought I can’t wait around so after we had finished we went to the hospital.

Dad looks terrible, we got there around eleven o’clock and he’s been there since three thirty this morning. Mom said when the ambulance took him they said they had to take Dad to Eagle Ridge Hospital. Mom told them he had just had surgery at UBC Hospital and she wanted him to go there. They said their policy is they take him to the nearest hospital.

The nurses kept on giving Dad pain killers every time he needed it but it didn’t help him at all.

I had quite a time with Alex he didn’t understand how sick Grandpa really is. Alex kept on asking when we were going home.

There were a number of times when Mom left to phone the doctor that Dad had. Dad looked like he wasn’t going to make it. His coloring wasn’t very good, he was sort of a greyish.

The doctor in the emergency ward said that the ultra sound came back he doesn’t have kidney stones but he didn’t know what was wrong with him. Mom told him if he didn’t phone Dr. F and have Dad transferred then she would.

It was around noon before the ambulance came to take Dad to UBC Hospital. I had gone to Nora’s to take Alex there. I had phoned her earlier and she said that was okay but she had a few errands and would take Alex with her if that was okay. I said that was okay I just didn’t want to bring Alex with me that I felt Mom needed me with her.

I went back to the hospital so Mom could follow me back. By that time Dad had already been taken in the ambulance.

Mom wanted to go home and have something to eat. I phoned Jeff and apologized for not phoning back. He said that was okay and I explained to him what had happened. I told him Dad had been transferred to UBC Hospital.

We left after one o’clock for UBC Hospital. Dad was still in the emergency. Mom went to admitting while I stayed with Dad. It was really hard staying with him, a few times I thought he was going. I was really glad when Mom came back.

Dr. F came to talk to Mom. He said Dad was bleeding internally and pushing the lining of his stomach out that was why he was in so much pain. Dr. F said the only way to relieve the pain was to get rid of the blood. He said he would have to operate to do that. Dr. F said surgery would be around five o’clock and would have to take an hour or two probably the later.

Dad sure was in a lot of pain and it was unbelievable how many pain killers they gave him. It seemed every time he needed it they gave it to him.

Dad went up for surgery at four thirty. We went to the cafeteria for dinner then we went up to the ward and put Dad’s stuff away. The rest of the time we spent in the tv room. It was about seven thirty when Dad finally came up. It sure was a relief to see him. He seemed okay for his ordeal and quite alert.

We left shortly after Dad was in his room. Mom told him she would see him tomorrow.

I took Mom home and went home myself. Charlie had phoned Nora to send Alex home. I think they went out for dinner. Charlie gave Alex his medicine.

Alex went to bed around nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.

I woke up at nine o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

Mom phoned before eleven to tell me she had gone to the hospital and taken Dad home. I said isn’t that a bit soon. Mom said she thought so but the doctor said he was discharged today.

In the afternoon, Alex played while I rested. I don’t have much energy. I’m so tired. It’s a bit hard on Alex since I’m not doing as much with him as I usually do.

Charlie got home at four o’clock. We ate dinner at five thirty. After dinner we went down to Mom and Dad’s to see how Dad was doing.

Dad looked very pale, he did a lot of pacing around the house. Around eight o’clock Dad cried out in pain. He was in the kitchen when it happened. It looked like he was falling backwards but Alex had put a chair there. Dad was coloring a picture and Alex was watching him.

Dad was in agony, Mom and Charlie got him upstairs. Then Mom got him his P.J.‘s and got him into bed.

Lars came shortly afterwards, he stayed for a short time and left.

We stayed for a short time after Dad was in bed.

Alex got ready for bed at nine o’clock. I went to bed shortly afterwards.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 1, 1989

I woke up at eight thirty. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

After lunch I took Alex to his class. I came home and did some work around the house. When I went to get Alex he said they made pita pockets. We came home right after the class.

When Charlie got home I left to go to the doctors. I told Dr. C I was here for a pregnancy test. I said I haven’t been feeling very good lately. I’ve been feeling nauseated, very tired and my right leg is really bothering. Dr. C sent me to the lab with my urine specimen from this morning and said to come back. Dr. C examined me and said that I must be pregnant but she would check with the lab. When she came back she said the test was positive and my due date is October 17th. Dr. C said to come back in three weeks.

When I got home Alex was asleep. Charlie had started to cook dinner which was already ready. I woke Alex up who said he was too tired. He shouldn’t have gone to sleep so late in the day.

After dinner I told Alex we were going to have a baby. Alex was really surprised, he didn’t say very much.

Alex didn’t go to bed until after nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.
