Diagnosis: Leukemia; March 3, 1989

I woke up to the phone ringing at five thirty this morning. Charlie answered the phone, he said Mom asked if I could let Geordie out that they were at Eagle Ridge Hospital. I couldn’t figure out what had happened and why they hadn’t gone to UBC Hospital. I went back to bed, not that I slept that well. I woke up at eight o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed.

Mom phoned to say they were still at Eagle Ridge Hospital. She said she had phoned for an ambulance at three o’clock this morning. I said you should have called us. Mom said she didn’t want to bother us! Mom asked me to phone Jeff and asked him if he could stay with Dad for awhile. Mom said the doctor in the emergency ward said he thought Dad had kidney stones. That seemed rather strange to me considering he had just had surgery on Monday.

Alex and I went to Mom and Dad’s and let Geordie out. I phoned Jeff to ask him if he could go to the hospital. He said he would be able to. I told him Mom said she would phone back around noon.

Alex and I went to McDonald’s for breakfast. While we were having breakfast I thought I can’t wait around so after we had finished we went to the hospital.

Dad looks terrible, we got there around eleven o’clock and he’s been there since three thirty this morning. Mom said when the ambulance took him they said they had to take Dad to Eagle Ridge Hospital. Mom told them he had just had surgery at UBC Hospital and she wanted him to go there. They said their policy is they take him to the nearest hospital.

The nurses kept on giving Dad pain killers every time he needed it but it didn’t help him at all.

I had quite a time with Alex he didn’t understand how sick Grandpa really is. Alex kept on asking when we were going home.

There were a number of times when Mom left to phone the doctor that Dad had. Dad looked like he wasn’t going to make it. His coloring wasn’t very good, he was sort of a greyish.

The doctor in the emergency ward said that the ultra sound came back he doesn’t have kidney stones but he didn’t know what was wrong with him. Mom told him if he didn’t phone Dr. F and have Dad transferred then she would.

It was around noon before the ambulance came to take Dad to UBC Hospital. I had gone to Nora’s to take Alex there. I had phoned her earlier and she said that was okay but she had a few errands and would take Alex with her if that was okay. I said that was okay I just didn’t want to bring Alex with me that I felt Mom needed me with her.

I went back to the hospital so Mom could follow me back. By that time Dad had already been taken in the ambulance.

Mom wanted to go home and have something to eat. I phoned Jeff and apologized for not phoning back. He said that was okay and I explained to him what had happened. I told him Dad had been transferred to UBC Hospital.

We left after one o’clock for UBC Hospital. Dad was still in the emergency. Mom went to admitting while I stayed with Dad. It was really hard staying with him, a few times I thought he was going. I was really glad when Mom came back.

Dr. F came to talk to Mom. He said Dad was bleeding internally and pushing the lining of his stomach out that was why he was in so much pain. Dr. F said the only way to relieve the pain was to get rid of the blood. He said he would have to operate to do that. Dr. F said surgery would be around five o’clock and would have to take an hour or two probably the later.

Dad sure was in a lot of pain and it was unbelievable how many pain killers they gave him. It seemed every time he needed it they gave it to him.

Dad went up for surgery at four thirty. We went to the cafeteria for dinner then we went up to the ward and put Dad’s stuff away. The rest of the time we spent in the tv room. It was about seven thirty when Dad finally came up. It sure was a relief to see him. He seemed okay for his ordeal and quite alert.

We left shortly after Dad was in his room. Mom told him she would see him tomorrow.

I took Mom home and went home myself. Charlie had phoned Nora to send Alex home. I think they went out for dinner. Charlie gave Alex his medicine.

Alex went to bed around nine o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
