Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 10, 1989

I woke up to Alex calling me at seven o’clock. Alex wanted a drink of water. I had put the cup in the kitchen when Alex called me again. He said after he had drank the water it had come back up. So I gathered he had thrown up. He got it on himself, the pillow and Mr. Bear. I got Alex another pajama top. Alex couldn’t get it off himself so I did it for him. He’s very pale and looks very ill. Alex’s temperature is 37.70, I gave him Tempra hopefully he’ll start to feel better.

We went back to bed. I woke up at nine o’clock. I was dizzy when I woke up, probably because i didn’t eat when I was suppose to. Then I didn’t sleep as well as I should of.

I had my shower, got dressed and had my breakfast. I still didn’t feel that well.

Alex didn’t wake up until after ten o’clock. Alex’s temperature is down, he seems to feel okay but he’s still very pale.

After lunch we went to the lab for my blood test. Then I took Alex to Mom and Dad’s while I went to the diabetic clinic.

There were a lot of people there already. I thought there wouldn’t be so many people in the afternoon. I had my weight checked, I had put on a couple of pounds. Then I saw Ann, she said I won’t have to spend too much time with you. You’re always good with your counts. I said why? Have you been having a lot of trouble today. She said not too bad but a few people don’t want to follow the diet.

I had to wait awhile before I saw Dr. B. Some of the other women were talking about being diabetic and where was the cheapest place to buy supplies.

Dr. B checked my blood pressure. The first time it was 150/80 but when she checked it with a different cuff it was 125/80.

She asked me if I was going to go right up to my due date. I told her the obstetrician said if I didn’t have the baby by October 20th I would be induced. Dr. B said they were happy with the way my diabetes has been going.

When Dr. B was measuring my stomach I told her Dr. Be said the baby is engaged. She said well he’s the expert. Later she said she agreed with him!

Then I had to wait to see Mary. First of all she said I don’t really need to see you, do I? I said I don’t know. She said well come in anyways. Mary said you have put on quite a bit but considering you don’t have much longer I won’t change your diet.

At least I didn’t have to wait long for the non stress test. I had a different nurse put on the belt for the machine. She kept on putting it on the right side. I never had it put there before. The baby kept on kicking it off, I thought that was pretty funny. The nurse changed me to another machine but was still having trouble. She finally asked me where it was put before. I told her it was usually the left side more to the middle. Finally she was able to get it so the baby didn’t kick it off and she didn’t push down so much.

The baby is quite active considering it’s engaged.

By the time I left it was three forty five. The traffic going home was quite heavy. I was going to stop at London Drugs but I didn’t feel like it. I was too tired by that time.

When I got to Mom and Dad’s, Mom said she took Alex’s temperature with a fever test and it was 102F. I told her the hospital said they aren’t accurate. She said she had phoned Charlie and he was on his way down with the thermometer. When he came down and took Alex’s temperature it was 38.06C. Charlie gave him Tempra, you’re not suppose to do that without talking to the hospital. The clinic isn’t open and if you phone the ward they would probably tell you to bring him in. What a time for Alex to get sick!

Alex and I came home while Charlie went to buy more Tempra. I waited for Charlie to come home before deciding on what to have for dinner. After today I really don’t have the energy to do any cooking.

Charlie cooked dinner when he got back. After dinner Alex watched Cosby then he picked up his toys and went to bed.

I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.
