Diagnosis: Leukemia; October 3, 1989

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast.

I left for the diabetic clinic at ten o’clock. There were quite a few people there already. One of the women told me I could go ahead and get weighed. I went down the hall and the nurse weighed me. She said try 8 kilos but I was 79.2, I had lost a bit. It seems they aren’t happy if you put on or take off!

Ann said my blood sugars were good except for the last one of the day. I told her I wasn’t exercising as Dr. B told me to rest more. My blood pressure was up last week. Ann said if the doctor tells you to rest you must rest.

I had to wait quite awhile for Dr. B, she was behind by about three patients.

Alex’s swimming teacher, Margaret sat down beside me. I asked her if she taught at Chimo pool. She said yes she did. I said my son Alex went swimming there. She said I thought I recognized you last week. We talked for quite awhile. She said she’s on insulin the last few weeks and her baby is due in the middle of November. When she asked me when I was due some of the other women said it must be nice to be due this month.

I saw Dr. B, she took my blood pressure which was 140/80. I told her I had it taken yesterday and it was 120/80. She said a few of her patients blood pressure were up so maybe there’s something wrong with her cuff. She asked me to have the nurse take my blood pressure when I have my non stress test.

Dr. B asked about Alex, I told her he was going in tomorrow for a blood test. She asked if Alex went to a lab. I said no he has to go into Children’s Hospital. She asked why was that. I said I don’t know but that’s the way they want it. Dr. B thought that was rather funny.

Dr. B said to keep on resting and I’ll see you in one week.

Then it was a long wait for the non stress test after I saw the dietician.

I talked to the woman beside me, she said this is the first pregnancy that’s gone full term. The first two were born two months early.

Another woman was overdue, she was induced on Saturday but the baby didn’t come. She was having a non stress test and an ultra sound today. That must have been pretty depressing.

Finally I had my non stress test but the nurse didn’t put the chair back so the baby didn’t move around that much. I counted four movements.

The nurse took my blood pressure and it was 110/70. That was good to hear so the doctors cuff must be not working.

I left the hospital at twelve thirty. I came home and had my lunch.

Mom and Dad came over at two o’clock. They bought us a stroller. I told Mom you didn’t have to do that. Mom said I know but we wanted to. They bought it at the Bay, it was on sale and they got 15% off with their seniors discount. It’s much nicer than the one we had for Alex. Alex’s stroller is falling apart and is badly stained.

They left at two thirty. Charlie hurried to leave for work. I did a few t things and picked up Alex.

All the other kids came out except Alex. I went inside the school. Mrs. Wall said Alex was in the library. I said I wondered what happened to him.

Carter was waiting for Alex when we came out. Miriam asked when Alex could come over next. I said any day would be okay. She said how about Tuesday next week. I said Tuesday they have no school. She said oh yea, I forgot then Wednesday? I said sure that would be good.

Alex and I came home. Alex was mad at me because I didn’t buy his prize yet. I told him I wasn’t going to make myself sick just because he had to have his prize. I also told him the hospital phoned and he wouldn’t be going tomorrow he would be going on Thursday. Alex said that’s what really makes me mad when they change the day.

We ate dinner at six o’clock. Dr. C phoned while we were having dinner. I had left a message for her earlier. I told her what my blood pressure was. She said I thought you were going to tell me it was up. You put my blood pressure up! I asked if she still wanted me to see the obstetrician. She said yes because you lost weight, your blood pressure was up and the baby’s growth has slowed down. She said it’s better to have everything checked out to be on the safe side. I told her I had been under a lot of stress at that time. She asked me to tell her exactly what kind of stress. I said well first of all you know about Alex then at the same time our dog started having seizures again. She said oh no that’s a lot of stress. Then I told her I was moving she couldn’t believe it. She said your stress level must have been high. I said we didn’t plan on moving then but that’s how it worked out. Dr. C said she wants me to have my ultra sound on Friday at one thirty and to confirm the appointment. So I’ll see you Friday morning she said.

After dinner I was pretty depressed wondering if the baby is alright. Since Dr. C said the baby’s growth has slowed down it really makes me wonder. Alex was never measured or I should say my stomach was never measured when I was carrying him. So when I lost weight at the end of the pregnancy with Alex I don’t know if he slowed down in growth or not.

Alex watched Cosby while I did the dishes. Alex put away his toys, he was in bed by eight thirty.

I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.
