Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 14, 1989

Alex woke me up at nine o’clock. Alex was calling is anyone up or who’s up. Nobody was up yet so I went into his room. Alex said since your up can I have breakfast. I said yes I guess so. Charlie got up as well.

I asked Alex what he wanted for breakfast but he said he didn’t know. It took him an hour before he decided what he wanted. I had breakfast in the meantime. After I had gotten Alex his hot cereal for breakfast I had a shower and got dressed.

Charlie asked what time we should go to the bank to transfer our accounts. I said it looks like it’s trying to snow so we had better go soon. By the time we got ready it had already started to snow.

We were able to transfer our accounts and Alex got a green machine piggy bank. Alex was happy about that. When we left the bank it was really snowing. We went to the lighting store to get Alex a lamp for his room. We went to Simon Fraser University then towards Hastings Street. The road to S.F.U. was really covered but it wasn’t too bad to drive on. On the way back the road was really covered and very slippery. We had to drive very slowly or we would have slid all over the place!

We stopped at the video store and rented a couple of movies. We knew we wouldn’t be going anywhere tonight.

We had lunch when we got home. Charlie put up Alex’s light and made the frame for the puzzle. I did the dishes and vacuumed the house.

Alex went out to play in the snow. He can’t stay out for very long. His face gets very red and if he does stay out too long it really hurts when he comes inside. When Alex was in the front Kurt, Patrick and Benjamin asked him to help them roll a big snowball. Alex didn’t want to and came inside.

Alex seems to be by himself quite a bit, of course one factor is because of his Leukemia. It could have a lot to do with his personality. With all the medication he is one he may not be the same person, as if he wasn’t taking any medication. He and I do spend a lot of time together. The other kids come to ask him to come over or to play but it’s very rare that Alex will seek one of his friends out.

A little later on Alex went to the backyard to shovel the snow. He said he didn’t want any kids bugging him.

We ordered pizza for dinner. Alex was annoyed because on the way home Charlie said he was going to Burger King for dinner. Alex said Charlie would have to order one hundred pizzas. Charlie said so I’ll order one hundred pizzas. When Alex talks like that you either have to agree with him or tell him to quit it.

After dinner we played video games. Alex and I played bumper cars after Alex had his snack. I had put the leftover pizza in the freezer and did the dishes.

Alex went to bed at eight thirty. Alex complained that he didn’t want to go to bed. I told him to stop saying that, he needs his sleep.

I watched the video once Alex was in bed. I wrote in the journal until eleven thirty. I’m going to bed soon.
