Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 17, 1989

I woke up at eight thirty. After I had breakfast I phoned Mom to tell her I was going up to the hospital at the same time and I would be coming home at the same time. Mom said she thought Dad might need her longer than that. I said I would find someone to look after Alex so we could stay longer. Mom said that would be good. She seems to need the added support that I can giver her.

I got ready to go but first I phoned Marla to ask her if she would be able to look after Alex. Marla said she was taking Lanie to her skating lesson at two o’clock but she could take Alex with them. I said as long as you don’t mind and it’s not too much trouble. Marla said it was no trouble she would pick Alex up at one thirty.

I told Charlie that Marla would pick Alex up at one thirty. That they would be going to the ice rink and that Alex had to wear his snow suit. I explained to Alex why he had to go with Marla. Alex said that was okay.

I picked up Mom, and we stopped at Pharmasave to buy a few things for Dad.

When we got to the hospital, Dad was in another room, a semi-private. Dad seemed to have accepted the news quite well.

Jeff came to see Dad about half an hour after we got there. It really helped Dad to get his mind off his troubles even for a moment. Jeff left around one o’clock.

Dad sure was funny he kept on poking at Mom. He seemed to disagree with Mom on just about everything they talked about. Maybe he’s just feeling bad about what he had done to himself.

We left at three o’clock. We picked Alex up at Marla’s. She invited us in for tea but I said my Mom wasn’t really up to it. Marla then asked about Dad. I told her that the doctor thought he would have to have part of his leg off. Marla said boy some doctors sure are blunt. We said our goodbyes. I said see you tomorrow for lunch. Marla said are your sure, we can change it to another day. I said no tomorrow is fine.

When we got in the car I told Mom, Marla had invited us in for tea. Mom said it’s too close to dinner. I don’t think she was up to it anyways.

Alex said they had a really good time. He said Lanie got Playmobile for Christmas. They played with that and some other stuff.

Mom invited us for dinner, I said we could stop and pick something up. Mom said no she had chicken or sausages we could have. We had chicken, baked potatoes and peas. We stayed until eight o’clock. Alex was getting tired.

We talked about Dad and his condition Mom is upset that Dad would do such a thing to himself. She felt she tried to watch him but unfortunately he sneaked out while she was sewing. Dad claims he didn’t know you couldn’t do a lot of things.

When we got home I got Alex ready for bed. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
