Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 22, 1989

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had a terrible headache as soon as I woke up. Charlie had put the heat on when he got up which was a few hours before and that’ll do it for me.

It had snowed last night again, it sure has snowed a lot this year, or I should say this winter. Mom was going to get Dad this morning, he’s being discharged today. I had told Mom is she didn’t want to drive one of us would take her. We didn’t hear from Mom until later.

I had a shower, got dressed and then Alex and I had breakfast. Charlie went grocery shopping around ten o’clock.

Mom phoned before eleven o’clock the first thing she said was what happened to you last night. I said we went to the Auto show last night. Mom said I thought you were going to bring Alex down here while you went to the Auto show. I said no I told you it was okay we would bring Alex with us.

Then Mom said she got Dad. She wasn’t too sure how they were going to manage. Mom said they went to Pharmasave to get Dad’s prescription for pain killers but they weren’t open yet. I said I could get the prescription filled if they wanted. I said I would be down shortly.

When Charlie got back form grocery shopping. I went to Mom and Dad’s then I went to Save-On-Foods where I got the prescription.

I went back to Mom and Dad’s, I stayed awhile. Dad said he was feeling okay, he wasn’t in any pain. He explained to us why he hadn’t gone through with the amputation. As far as I was concerned there wasn’t any need for it. It’s a terrible decision to make and if he has to take more time to decide that’s okay. Dad said he could have told the doctor to go ahead with the amputation but he just couldn’t do it.

I came home at two or three o’clock. Patrick had come over before I left earlier. I had asked him if he had been sick lately. Patrick said a long time ago. I said ask your Mom and come back. Patrick did come back, he said his mom wasn’t home but his dad was and that he had been sick a long time ago. I said okay you can come and play.

I tided up the house then it was time to cook dinner. After dinner I did the dishes and we went down to Mom and Dad’s. I thought Charlie acted a bit odd towards Dad. The thought of the amputation has affected him more so it seems.

Alex wasn’t good at all. I had to tell him to stay away from Dad. I had visions of him tripping and landing on Dad’s foot. He has enough problems as it is. Alex kept asking me to do things. He did a lot of complaining.

We came home at nine o’clock. Alex was really mad when I told him to get ready for bed. I went to bed shortly after Alex.
