Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 16, 1989

I woke up at eight thirty. I made breakfast for Alex and myself. I got ready to go pick Mom up to go to the hospital. We left at ten o’clock. Charlie stayed home with Alex.

It took us quite awhile to find a parking space. When we got to Dad’s room he was fast asleep. I would have just let him sleep but Mom tried waking him up. First of all she called Dad but he didn’t wake up. I sort of wondered about him but I did notice his breathing was normal. Mom started to hit his hand. She seemed to bet getting a little alarmed but Dad finally woke up. When he did Dad didn’t know where he was or who we were. It took Dad awhile but he finally realized where he was. He really looked out of it.

Mom went to the nurses station to give them Dad’s medication, they didn’t have any in the hospital. While she was gone Dad held onto my hand really tight. He said he didn’t sleep well last night. Dad said he was awake until three o’clock this morning because the pain was so bad. It was the third medication they gave him. The first two didn’t take and they had to wait so many hours before giving Dad another medication. So finally at three o’clock the nurse said are you still awake. Dad said yes. Then she asked if he had slept at all. Dad said no. The nurse said she would get something, she came back with a shot and that finally helped.

When mom came back he held onto her hand. Dad avoided talking to Mom about him shovelling the snow. He dozed on and off while we were there. We left before two o’clock, I had to be home so Charlie could go to work.

I asked Mom in for something to eat but she wanted to go home. I asked Mom to phone me when she heard from the doctor. Dad’s to have an operation to see what’s wrong with his leg.

I had something to eat. Then Alex and I built Lego. Alex phoned Kurt but Kurt said he didn’t want to play, maybe tomorrow. Alex was really upset but there was nothing I could do about it.

We ate dinner at six o’clock. After dinner we played video games. After I had gotten Alex to bed I phoned Mom. She said she hadn’t heard from the doctor yet and was getting quite concerned. Dad was suppose to have his surgery at six o’clock, Mom said she phoned the hospital and the nurse told her the surgery was changed to nine o’clock. This was in a later conversation with Mom. She asked me what time I would be up. I said Charlie got home at midnight but I usually go to bed at eleven thirty. Mom said she would phone if she got any word from the doctor before then.

I watched tv and wrote in the journal. Mom phoned before eleven thirty. She was very upset the doctor had phoned with not very good news. Dr. F said they couldn’t find any arteries in Dad’s foot. They couldn’t tell why or what was wrong with the arteries. Dr. F said he wanted to do an anagram tomorrow to see if the arteries could be located.

I went to bed after I talked to Mom. It was hard to get to sleep.
