Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 3, 1989

I woke up at ten o’clock. Alex and I had breakfast then I had a shower and got dressed. I made the beds, did the dishes and the laundry. He had an early lunch since we had to go to the hospital this afternoon.

We left at twelve fifteen for the hospital. There were quite a few people there already. Mary was back thank goodness. Otherwise it takes a couple of hours to get the results back from upstairs. I asked if she was okay and she said she was.

At two o’clock, Krisann asked us the routine questions. While she was doing this Dr. S asked if she had Alex’s chart. The doctor said to Krisann so low. Krisann said yes I don’t know why. After Dr. S had left I asked her if Alex’s blood count was in. Krisann said yes that Alex’s ANC was low. Krisann said it might be because Alex has been coughing and sneezing.

We saw Dr. S shortly afterwards, she said that Alex’s ANC was too low and that they wouldn’t be able to do the LP today. Dr. S said she was stopping Mercaptopurine and Methotrexiate. She also said to continue giving Alex Septra and Prednisone.

Joan, Krisann and Dr. S all asked us what happened to Alex’s eye. They actually asked Alex what happened but he didn’t answer them. Usually he doesn’t answer them anyways. I told them what happened to Alex. Dr. S looked at me sort of funny.

We went to the pharmacy then we came back. We waited awhile before it was time for Alex to have his Vincristine. Alex was very upset when Lenore was putting the needle in. Alex tried to pull his arm away. Lenore had to stop and call Krisann into the room to help hold Alex’s arm. I talked to Alex and tried to explain that if he didn’t keep his arm still that Lenore might have to do it again. Alex cried and cried. He said it was going to really hurt. I said it’ll hurt but if you blow it won’t hurt so much. Alex said he couldn’t blow. Finally it was done and Alex calmed down.

We left the hospital, we had gone a block when I realized we had forgotten to pick up Alex’s pills. I said I forgot to pick up your pills. Alex said why didn’t you remind me. I said what are you talking about you didn’t remember either. Alex said we were both silly.

We finally were able to leave the hospital. The second time we didn’t have to pay for parking.

We went to Lougheed mall where Alex decided he wanted a G.I. Joe as a prize. Then we went to the drive through at McDonald’s and came home.

When we got home I phoned Mom to let her know we were home and what had happened. Someone had left a message on the machine, a child. I don’t know who it was.

We had dinner at five o’clock. After dinner we played a game and video games.

Alex go ready for bed at eight o’clock. I watched TV and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
