Diagnosis: Leukemia; January 9, 1989

I woke up at nine o’clock. I had breakfast and made Alex his breakfast. Alex had told me I couldn’t have toast for breakfast. I told him that he wasn’t going to tell me what I couldn’t eat. Alex said okay you can have toast.

After breakfast I had a shower and got dressed. I made our beds, did the laundry and the dishes.

We had an early lunch then we left for the hospital. The roads were okay but I had a hard time finding a parking space.

Krisann weighed Alex and also measured him. There wasn’t much of a change since they had done it last week.

Mary had trouble getting the blood out of Alex’s finger. She said in future she might have to take it from him arm. She also said Alex’s fingers were getting tough. That will be a big problem, hopefully it won’t happen for awhile.

Alex was able to have his LP, his ANC was normal. Alex asked me if we could go. I said no not yet. Alex asked if he had to have a poke in his arm. I said no not in your arm. He said somewhere else? I said yes and he asked where. I told him in his back. Alex was very upset, he almost cried right in the waiting room. I explained to Alex why it had to be done. Alex said it hurts over and over again. Alex did understand why it had to be done but now he realizes when he gets his pokes especially the back one it hurts a lot. I really don’t know what to tell him. Alex knows he should keep still but he still fights it anyways. He’s become of an age where he identifies with pain and he’s not old enough to be told not to act that way.

Anyway we went to have the LP done. Once Alex was in position he started to fight having the LP done. I held onto Alex while he was sitting up for his LP. Alex started to scream as soon as Dr. S. touched his back. Unfortunately my ear was an inch from Alex’s mouth. The doctor, Krisann and I talked to Alex. Alex kept saying it’s going to hurt. I told him it was okay to cry but please don’t scream. Alex said it’s going to hurt. I said I know it’s going to hurt but the more you move, scream and tense up the longer it’s going to take. It’s going to have to be done and I already told you why.

Alex calmed down a little bit. Krisann read stories to Alex while the doctor froze Alex’s back. Alex started to cry but at least he didn’t scream.

While the doctor was waiting for the freezing to take. She said to me I should have a talk with Alex and explain why he has to keep still. I told her last week when Alex had his chemo he pulled his arm away. She was rather surprised. She said at Alex’s age he should understand that he has to keep still. I thought to myself Dr. S. doesn’t have children, she couldn’t anyways.

Finally it was all over and I took Alex out to the waiting room to a bed to lie down for an hour. Alex was feeling pretty upset so I tried to cheer him up with the stuffed toys they had in the room. Alex started to laugh when I made the animals pop up at him from the bottom of the bed.

I went to the pharmacy and came back. Alex and I played some more with the stuffed toys. I went back to get Alex’s pills then it was time to go.

We left at four thirty and went to McDonald’s for dinner. Alex slept most of the way there. We came home after dinner, Alex got his prize. Alex was really happy to get Buttons McBoom Boom, a crook from COPS. Alex played with all his COPS figures. He wanted me to play as well but I was too tired.

Alex got ready for bed at eight o’clock, he took Buttons McBoom Boom and some other figures to bed with him.

I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
