I woke up at eight thirty. I had a shower and while I was in there, Alex was knocking on the door. He seems to have to know where I am or do everything with me. For the last week Alex has been sleeping in our bed. He usually comes into our bed after two o’clock. I’m usually too tired to argue with him.
After my shower I got dressed and made our breakfast. I got ready to pick Mom up and go to the hospital. We left at ten o’clock and stopped at Pharmasave.
Dad seemed to be feeling pretty good with the exception that he still has pain in his foot.
While we were there, Dr. F came to talk to Dad and Mom. Dr. F explained that Dad was scheduled to have surgery today. They were going to see what shape the lower arteries were in. They haven’t been able to find a pulse as yet. Dr. F said they would try and graph the artery but if it was plugged up with gristle they wouldn’t be able to. Dr. F said to Dad since you don’t want it amputated if it’s unsuccessful then we will just leave it and you’ll go home once it has started to heal. That’s another problem, his leg might have trouble healing. I asked Dr. F what happens to the arteries when they’re plugged. He said they probably would wither away. Dr. F told Dad he would be very limited, he would only be able to walk to the bathroom. He would be in a lot of pain and he would have to come back into the hospital to have it amputated when he had made up his mind. Dad said he understood that but he still didn’t want to go through with the amputation just yet. Dr. F sad he could understand that, it’s very hard to make the decision.
Dad insisted that we go down to the cafeterias for lunch. Mom didn’t really want to go but Dad kept on about it. He asked me but I said if Mom wanted to go that I would go too. After much insisting from Dad we went to the cafeteria. Mom said she didn’t want to but she had a sandwich anyways. I had a sandwich as well. I find it’s too long by the time we get home.
The nurse came in at one thirty, she said he had to get ready for surgery, they would be coming soon. We stayed as long as we could but at two fifteen Mom said we had better get going. We didn’t get home until after three o’clock. Charlie was annoyed because he said he would be late for work. There was nothing I could do. I stayed that long because I thought Mom wanted to stay as long as possible.
Mom phoned at four thirty, she said the doctor had phone and the surgery was unsuccessful. Mom was very upset and started to cry on the phone. I told her if she needed me to come down I would. She said right now she’s in shock, she thanked me anyways.
We ate dinner at five thirty. It was hard to do anything when I received such bad news. I explained to Alex what was happening to Grandpa. He understand what would happen. Alex said that was terrible.
Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
