Diagnosis: Leukemia; September 13, 1989

I woke up at seven thirty. Alex was just getting up when I closed his door. He sure is happy these days being off his medicine. He always wakes up in a good mood. It sure is strange that his ANC is so low.

I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast. Alex also had breakfast, his shower and got dressed.

We left for the hospital before nine o’clock. Once we got to the hospital we had to wait about fifteen minutes for Alex to have his blood test. Mary wasn’t there today, Mike did Alex’s blood test. Alex wanted me to come in with him. I had to hold his hand while it was being done.

Then we waited for the results I wasn’t expecting Alex’s counts to come up too much. I didn’t expect it to drop so much. His ANC went down to 294 from 700 last week.

We saw Dr. S, I told her Alex had a mouth sore, a sore throat and was sneezing this past week. She said Alex could have some kind of virus and that was why his counts had dropped. Dr. S said they would have to wait until next week and if Alex’s counts didn’t come up he would have to have another bone marrow test. She said she conferred with Dr. R and that was his discission.

I had talked to Heather about Alex’s counts. She said sometimes when patients are on chemotherapy it will make their counts low. I said it seemed strange that just the ANC was dropping down. When Alex was first sick all his counts went down. Heather said that was because the Leukemia cells were taking over and there was no room for the good cells.

I asked Heather how the WBC and ANC are connected. She said they add up all the figures from the neutrofils down and that gives the the WBC count.

Heather asked if Alex is taking Septra. I said yes he is she said they might take him off that as it sometimes interferes with their counts.

I asked DR. S about that. She said because Alex might have a virus it wasn’t’ advisable. It might make things worse.

By the time we left it was eleven o’clock. Nora came over while we were getting into the house. She told Alex, Kurt hadn’t expected on getting a present from him. He sure liked his present. She said Kurt had tried it our last night in the bather tub. We had bought him Sewer Swing Donatello.

We went into the house to get things for Alex to take to Mom and Dad’s. Charlie said don’t bother, mom is coming here Dad has a sore throat.

Mom came at twelve thirty. We left to meet Dean at a house. I wasn’t too impressed with the house. It had no dining room and the square footage of the main floor is 1090. It was just too small for me. Charlie really liked the backyard but it would be nice to get a private yard and a house we both like in our price range of course!

We came home to get Alex’s library book. We went to the school and I briefly talked to Mrs. Wall. I told her Alex had to go back next week and he wouldn’t be in school until at least that time. Mrs. Wall said I could get Alex another book.

After that we drove around Ranch Park to look for any houses but we didn’t see anything. We came home and Mom left shortly afterwards.

I was pretty upset by Alex’s counts. It’s such a worry not knowing whets wrong with him.

We ate dinner at five thirty. My patience are wearing very thin theses days. Alex dropped the butter container on the floor then he spilt his juice. Then he said he wasn’t hungry anymore. What a trying time we’re having!

Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I wrote in the journal until eight thirty. Kelly had a seizure tonight half an hour after he had his pill. He had it upstairs so I had to move him to the kitchen. He usually cuts his tongue. Then I had to take him down to the backyard to wash him down.

It sure has been one depressing day.

Dean phoned just after nine o’clock. He said he had a client from Winnipeg whom he wanted to bring tomorrow morning. He said between ten thirty and eleven.

Then I had to do a bit of cleaning as I didn’t want to do all of it tomorrow morning.

By the time I had my snack I was exhausted. My feet have really swelled up tonight. I was probably on my feet too much today.

I went to bed at eleven thirty.
