Diagnosis: Leukemia; September 22, 1989

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast. Alex woke up at nine o’clock. Since Alex started back on his medication, I’ve noticed a big change in him. He’s once again cranky and moody.

I left for the doctor’s at eleven o’clock. I didn’t have to wait very long. Dr. C asked about Alex, I told her his counts had come up. When I told her Alex would have to have another bone marrow test a day before my due date. Dr. C was really upset, she said do they know what your due date is? I said probably not. Dr. C said you better tell them to change the appointment. I told her once they make the appointment you can’t change it. She said in that case make sure you have a ride to the hospital. I had told her Charlie was taking the day off to take him to the hospital. I said my parents will be here. Dr. C said where do they live, are they close by? I said they only live a few blocks away.

I asked Dr. C when she would be away. She said she was going on a seminar on the 11th, 12th, and 13th of October. If I went into labour after hours she would be doing the delivery. The only thing is if I’m downtown at the seminar I might get stuck in traffic and not make it, she said. I told her Dr. W didn’t make it for Alex’s delivery.

Dr. C felt for the baby’s position. I asked her what the hard bump in the middle of my stomach was. She said she thought it was probably the baby’s bottom. Dr. C said she couldn’t determine the position of the baby, so she wants me to go for an ultra sound. Dr. said it’s better to know the position of the baby so we are prepared. She thinks it might be breached, I didn’t tell her Mom had Blair breached. I always thought the baby could move right up until it’s born.

Dr. C also ordered a blood test to check my iron and folic acid level.

I went to the lab and had my blood test. I also went to the reception to book the appointment for the ultra sound. She seemed to be annoyed that I only wanted a Tuesday appointment. Dr. C said I might as well go the same day as when I go to the clinic. The receptionist said she would phone later as there wasn’t anyone there.

I went to Safeway to buy a few groceries then I went home. Charlie had taken Alex to school.

I tided up the house after I had my lunch. Charlie phoned Dean, he phoned back later to say he got a verbal confirmation that the purchasers mortgage had gone through. That sure was good news. I’ll feel better when we get it in writing.

Charlie went to work, I went to pick Alex up before three o’clock. Mrs. Wall said to Alex show your Mom around the classroom since she didn’t come last night. I told her I hadn’t been able to come. She said I hadn’t missed much.

Alex showed me where the story books are kept, the toys and where they did the games. Alex said he did the dinosaur game and he got a sticker.

We went home right after school. Alex watched tv, he did phone a few of his friends but they were already playing. Alex really wanted to play with someone, and was quite upset.

We made rice crispy squares which Alex really enjoyed.

We ate diner at six o’clock, after dinner we watched tv. Alex went to bed at eight o’clock.

I watched tv and went to bed at eleven o’clock.
