Diagnosis: Leukemia; September 15, 1989

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast.

I wrote in the journal for about an hour. I wrapped Pearl’s present and Charlie went out and mailed it.

In the afternoon I worked on my knitting. I haven’t done it for quite awhile. Mind you I’m almost finished, I just have to do the collar and the front middle where the button wholes go.

Alex and I left to go to the doctors. We didn’t have to wait very long in the waiting room but we had to wait quite awhile in the examining room.

Dr. C said your Mom tells me Alex’s counts are down. I said yes. I told her Alex’s ANC is 294 and he has been off his chemo pills for three weeks now. His counts haven’t come up just yet. I also said I wasn’t too pleased about Alex having a bone marrow test. I explained that Alex had it too soon after having chemo and finished his prednisone. Dr. C understood what I was talking about but didn’t comment on it. She checked Alex out and said you seem to be okay Alex, what’s going on with you. You seem to have become sensitive to chemotherapy all of a sudden.

Then it was my turn, she gave me a kick chart to fill out. She said to record ten movements of the baby daily.

Dr. C checked the baby and she said the baby’s heartbeat is 150. She also checked my blood pressure which is 120/60. I told her my feet were swelling up. She said are you putting up your feet? I said yes I am. My feet seem to swell up in the evening. Dr. C said the callus on my foot would be giving me pain as it is so thick. She said try soaking and removing it or using a corn pad. If that doesn’t work I’ll send you to a foot doctor.

Unfortunately I forgot to ask her about calcium supplements.

We went to McDonald’s drive through and came home. Alex plays a lot with his toys since he can’t go anywhere. He’s in such a good mood it’s unbelievable. Since August he’s put on two pounds the doctor said.

We watched Cosby, it comes on twice daily. Alex gets to watch the second one only if he’s in his pajamas and has put way all his toys.

Alex was in bed by eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at ten o’clock.
