Diagnosis: Leukemia; September 29, 1989

I woke up at eight o’clock. I had a shower, got dressed and had my breakfast.

I made the beds and did the dishes. I had washed the baby clothes last night. Alex was pretty funny when we were looking through the boxes. Practically every item he said ah isn’t that cute. When I showed Alex a undershirt, size 3 months he couldn’t believe he had worn it.

I went to the doctors before noon. Charlie took Alex to school. I had a long wait for the doctor. When Dr. C came in she said she had hoped she would be on time. When she took my blood pressure she kept on saying calm down. I was thinking to myself I am calm. My blood pressure was 140/80 so she had me lie down on my left side and it was 130/76. It was still up from last week which was 110/75. Dr. C said it means something when the blood pressure goes up 20 points. I told her when I was pregnant with Alex my blood pressure was quite high and it was checked quite often. Dr. C looked in my chart and said oh yes it was much higher. I said what was it? She said it was 165, maybe your more relaxed in this pregnancy. Dr. C said sometimes in a pregnancy the placenta doesn’t function right. I asked if the swelling and salty foods had anything to do with it. Dr. C didn’t think it had anything to do with it.

Dr. C had asked how Alex was doing. I told her the hospital had phoned this week and Dr. S wants to see Alex next week. She asked if it was for a bone marrow test. I said no they wanted to check Alex’s counts.

Dr. C said I want you to have your ultra sound next week instead of the tenth and I also want you to see an obstetrician next week. She said she would arrange everything for me. Dr. C wanted to see me earlier in the week but then realized I wouldn’t be able to with going to the diabetic clinic and Children’s Hospital.

Dr. C told me to rest in the afternoon. I think she realized I can’t do anything when I have a five year old to look after.

Dr. C asked if Mom could take my blood pressure daily and if it goes up to phone her right away.

I came home and had my lunch. After lunch I tried to relax and not do too much. It’s pretty hard to do.

I picked Alex up at three o’clock. I saw Miriam and told her Alex wanted Carter to come over on Monday. She said that would be okay. I told her Charlie would be taking Alex there and I would pick them up.

Alex and I came home, he watched tv and played awhile. We went to McDonald’s for dinner. I ordered a ¼ pounder but I had to have it without cheese and pickles. It sure doesn’t taste the same.

We went to Mom and Dad’s, Alex had a good time playing Nintendo with Dad.

We came home at nine o’clock. Alex watched Chip and Dale then he went to bed. I went to bed after Alex.
