I woke up at six thirty. Actually I didn’t sleep well last night, I must of woken up at least three times. I’m really worried about Alex. It’s hard to know what’ll happen now.
I had a shower, got dressed and had breakfast. Alex woke up at seven o’clock. He had breakfast after he had his shower and got dressed.
We left for the hospital at eight fifteen. The traffic wasn’t very good on the freeway. When we got to the hospital it took us fifteen minutes to find a parking space.
Alex’s appointment is for nine o’clock but we got to the clinic at nine twenty. It was nine forty before he had his blood test.
Alex and I went to the cafeteria, Alex had a chocolate donut. He wanted chocolate milk as well but I said no that was too much chocolate at one time.
It was ten forty five before Alex had his LP. I heard Laurel say to the other nurses, 4.9 that sure is a lot better form the last time he was in. I thought they couldn’t be talking about Alex. I checked the printout and sure enough Alex’s WBC is 4.9, his ANC hadn’t come in yet. I didn’t get my hopes up that it had come up. Since all the numbers from the Neutrophils down make up the WBC.
I talked to Charlie before Alex’s LP. He had stayed home to wait for the appraiser to come. The appraiser had phoned last night, I told him we had an appointment and I didn’t know when we would be back. He gave me his pager number to let him know. So I asked Charlie if he had gotten a hold of him yet. Charlie said he would be there at eleven o’clock. Charlie asked about Alex I told him his WBC is 4.9 and his ANC wasn’t here yet. Charlie said to phone him back when I knew more.
So anyways Alex had his LP, his ANC is 3087. It sure came up in one week. Alex was really upset that he had to have an LP. When the nurse put him on the table, he said but it’s going to hurt. I said I thought you told me it was better than a bone marrow test. Alex said yes but it still hurts. I said yes it does but it has to be done so they can check the water in your back to make sure its okay.
Dr. S told him I would hold him during his LP. I told her I wouldn’t be able to as I have back problems. Even if I was able to I don’t know where I would put my stomach!
Joanne held Alex while I showed him the pop up books. Another nurse was standing by watching. I had never seen her before, she must be new.
Alex is really good through out the whole procedure. He just had a normal problem with it. Once it’s all over with he’s fine. It’s too bad he couldn’t sit straight but he usually sits crooked.
Joanne took Alex to the waiting area to lie down. There were a lot of people there now. I had to sit across the room from Alex which he didn’t seem to like.
I asked Joanne if Dr. S had left Alex’s prescription yet. Another nurse was just bringing it. I told Alex I was going to the pharmacy. He said don’t take too long. Alex asked me to buy him chocolate raisins.
The pharmacist said it would be half an hour for the prescription. I bought Alex his raisins and myself some grapes.
On the way back to the clinic Dr. S stopped me. She told me she was going to stop the Septra. She said she thought it might be interfering with Alex’s counts.
During Alex’s LP, Dr. S told me Alex would have to have another bone marrow test. They would have to check it to make sure the immature cells were gone. I said so you’ll do that at least three weeks after Alex has chemotherapy? Dr. S said we’ll do it just before he has chemotherapy. I’ll schedule it for next month.
I phoned Charlie to let him know that Alex’s counts were up and that he had a LP. Charlie said that sure is good news. I’ll phone Mom and tell her. I said okay.
At eleven forty, Margaret called Alex to have his chemotherapy. Unfortunately Laurel threw Alex’s medicine out. Margaret had opened two patients medicine together and had done the other child’s first. Now we have to wait for another forty five minutes.
Laurel did apologize a couple of times but there was nothing to be done.
Margaret said Alex doesn’t mind staying longer do you Alex? Alex said no he doesn’t mind. I said he might not mind but I sure do.
At twelve thirty, Alex finally had his chemo. Lorraine blew bubbles for Alex which helped him get his mind off of it.
I showed Margaret Alex’s arm where his skin has become scarred. I wondered if it was where the chemo had burnt the inside tissue. One of the nurses had put the needle in the vein, but it had gone through to the other side. The chemo went into the tissue instead of the vein. Karen said most likely it was.
We got home after one o’clock. It was too late to take Alex to school and anyways he had enough for one day.
Charlie said the appraiser had been at eleven o’clock. He took a lot of pictures of the house, inside and out. The appraiser checked the walls, looked at the paint. Charlie told him all the features of the house and gave him the house plans. The appraiser said he would mail them back to him.
Charlie went to work at two thirty. Alex and I went to see Mrs. Wall at his school at two thirty. We also returned Alex’s library book.
Mrs. Wall told Alex she was happy to see him. I told her the doctor said Alex could come back to school tomorrow. She said that’s really good.
I asked Mrs. Wall if she had heard anything about the measles break out and if there were any in the school. She said she hadn’t heard anything but she would let me know.
Mrs. Wall gave Alex a squirrel to cut out and a picture for him to draw of himself. She said she wouldn’t give him too many things to do just yet.
We went to the bank and then to the mall. Alex wanted to buy sewer swingin Donatello and I said he could also have Rockn’roll Michelangelo. We went to McDonald’s for dinner and came home.
I was exhausted from everything we had to do today.
Alex played with his new toys and even put Donatello in the bath tub.
Alex went to bed at eight o’clock. I watched tv and went to bed at nine o’clock.
