Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 31, 1987

The alarm woke us up at eight o’clock. We have to be at the hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. I’m so tired I wish I could sleep in this weekend but it looks like I won’t be able to sleep in for the whole month of June. Alex’s shots are scheduled for Friday to Monday.

I got Alex dressed then Alex went to ask Charlie to get him breakfast. I had a shower then I got ready to go to the hospital. We left the house at nine o’clock and reached the hospital at 9:30 a.m.

The medication wasn’t there yet so the nurse phoned the pharmacy. The pharmacy said they would mix it up and send it over.

We waited about 15 or 20 minutes. Two nurses came into the playroom where we were and asked us to bring Alex. One of the nurses asked me if Alex knew what was going to happen. I told her I didn’t tell him as it always makes it worse.

We were going to go into the treatment room but it was occupied so the nurses took us into room 8. That’s the room Alex stayed in before. He sure hasn’t forgotten where he stayed, he even remembers how he changed beds.

Alex cried a little bit but he was really good. The nurse brought the treasure chest out to the hall for Alex to pick his prize. Alex chose a prehistoric animal.

We left the hospital and got home around eleven o’clock. Alex had lunch and then I told him he had to have a nap as Shirley, Aaron, Brent and Monique were coming over for dinner.

I went out to get a couple of movies for tonight and to get a birthday cake. It was Shirley’s birthday yesterday and when Alex found out it was her birthday he wanted to have a birthday party for her. He said this when he was still on Prednisone which was pretty surprising as all he ever thought of was food.

I came back at 12:30 p.m., I had a terrible headache and I took some panadol. Alex still hadn’t had his nap yet. I put him in his bed and told him to stay there even if he wasn’t tired. He complained he wasn’t tired and even tried to come out of his room. I told him to go back to bed or I’d phone Brent and tell him to stay home. That made him furious but he finally fell asleep after one o’clock and he slept until 3:45 p.m. when I woke him up.

I went to have a bath, I thought it might help my headache go away. Then I got dressed. Shirley came by herself, she had been out earlier and she said it was easier if she went home anytime she wanted too.

Aaron and the kids came before five o’clock. The hockey game was on so we watched the game. It was the finals Oilers vs. Flyers.

We had B.B.Q steak, pork and ribs with salad, cauliflower, mushrooms and buns. We had black forest cake with ice cream for dessert.

Alex and Brent played really well together. I had to keep an eye on them as I didn’t want them to play too rough. Alex and Brent watched a Mickey mouse movie while we watch Heartburn.

Aaron and Brent left after nine o’clock. Shirley and Monique stayed until ten o’clock.

Alex had his medicine, he complained the whole time he took it. He finally went to bed around ten thirty. We went to bed by eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 30, 1987

Charlie woke me up before eight o’clock. We have to be at the hospital between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Alex woke up shortly after. I got out of bed, I got Alex dressed then Alex asked Charlie to get him breakfast. I had a shower and got ready to go.

We left the house at nine o’clock, we arrived at the hospital by 9:30 a.m. We went to the nurses station and told a nurse that Alex was here. The nurse, Laurel looked at the board, I told her Alex was an out patient. She said oh we weren’t expecting anyone today. I thought oh no I hope we don’t have to stay too long.

We went into the playroom while they checked everything out. Laurel came and told us it wasn’t up from the pharmacy and it would be 15 minutes before it would be up.

Laurel called us after about twenty minutes to go into the treatment room. Alex had his ARA-C shot, he blew bubbles while another nurse put the needle in. Alex was really good, he hardly cried at all.

Alex picked a toy moose out of the treasure chest and the nurse gave us two dimenhydrinate pills She said to give Alex ¼ of the pill every four hours.

We left the hospital and went home. We got home around eleven o’clock. We had lunch around noon. Before that I gave Alex a ¼ of the dimenhydrinate pill. After lunch Alex played with the puzzles, games and his cars.

Charlie left at 4:30 p.m. to get us a pizza for dinner from Boston Pizza. Alex and I watched TV while we waited. Charlie got back at 5:30 p.m. as they made a mistake, they thought we wanted a small individual instead of a small.

We had dinner and then we got ready to go to Mom and Dad’s. Alex got a Mickey mouse hat from Mom and Dad. We left around nine o’clock.

Alex fell asleep in the car and I had to wake him up to take his medicine. Alex was furious he said he wanted to go to sleep. I finally got Alex to take his medicine after a lot of screaming and yelling.

I got Alex ready for bed at 10:30 p.m., now he is wide awake and he’s talking a mile a minute.

Charlie and I went to bed shortly afterwards. Alex climbed into bed at eleven o’clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 29, 1987

The alarm woke me up at 7:30 a.m. It sure was an exhausting night. I woke Alex up at midnight and got him to go to the bathroom. I tried to get him to drink something but he kept on telling me he was too tired. After half an hour he said he was going to be sick. Charlie got him some ginger ale and I told Alex to try not to throw-up and to try to calm down.

Alex drank a glass of ginger ale and then after he had drank it he threw up. I phoned the hospital and they said to give Alex some gravol. Alex said he felt okay and wanted some pea soup. He had about half a bowl then he went to bed. Alex said he wanted to sleep in our bed so Alex and I slept together, Charlie slept in Alex’s bed.

After about ten minutes Alex threw up again all over the sheets and pillow case. I gave Alex some gravol and he threw up some more . After that Alex didn’t throw up any more but he still complained his stomach hurt. I rubbed his stomach for awhile and then I just left my hand on his stomach and he fell asleep.

At 7:30 a.m. Alex and I got out of bed. I got Alex dressed then Alex went and asked Charlie to get him breakfast. I gave Alex his medicine he now takes 2.5 mg of Prednisone and he still has to take Bactrim until June 11th.

I had breakfast and then had a shower and got ready to go to the hospital. We have to be there at ten o’clock. We left the house at 9:30 a.m. and we arrived at the hospital at 10:10 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m. Alex had a spinal tap. They didn’t give Alex a sedative as they thought he would be okay. Alex screamed and cried but he didn’t move too much. Krisann had to hold Alex tight which he hates but they were afraid he might move when they put the needle in. After they drew the fluid off Krisann let go of Alex and he calmed right down. We showed him a pop-up book and he was okay. Alex picked another puzzle and then they got ready for the ARA-C shot. Alex had the shot in his right arm. Lenore told me it hurts more than having an I.V. Alex cried when they put it in but not for long.

Alex picked another prize from the other treasure box.

After eleven o’clock Krisann gave Alex some gravol, at 11:30 a.m. we left the hospital and went home.

We had lunch, Alex and Charlie had macaroni in a soup. I had cheese and a bun.

I went to the mall to buy Shirley a birthday present as it’s her birthday tomorrow.

I came back at 2:46 p.m., Charlie was a bit mad, he left right away. Charlie said Alex had thrown up about four times. Alex was lying in our bed. Alex got out of bed and showed me the puzzle Charlie had done.

Alex was in the kitchen and said his throat hurt and he was going to throw up. Before I could get a bowl he threw up on the floor. He threw up again into a bowl and then I got him some ginger ale and put him in our bed.

I phoned the hospital at three o’clock and they said to give him some more gravol. I gave Alex the gravol and lied with him in our bed and rubbed and held his stomach until four o’clock. By then he was okay.

Krisann said the nausea would last about two hours and he should be okay by dinner time.

Alex had pea soup after five o’clock, he finished the whole can. I didn’t want him to eat too much or anything too heavy just in case he got sick all over again.

We watched TV and did two of Alex’s puzzles. Alex went to bed before nine o’clock.

I wrote in the journal until ten o’clock. I’ll get ready for bed soon, I want to clean up the kitchen first.

Diagnosis Leukemia; May 28, 1987

Charlie woke me up at 7:30 a.m., we had to be at the hospital at 9:00 a.m. I had a shower and got ready to go. Alex didn’t get up until 7:45 a.m. by the time we all got ready it was 8:30 a.m.

The traffic on the freeway was pretty heavy, so we didn’t get to the hospital until 9:15 a.m. I thought we were late and that they would be complaining but when we checked his name off it said 9:30 a.m. So we were early not late!

After waiting for forty five minutes, I asked what was happening with Alex. The nurse said hasn’t he had blood taken? I told her no and she said well we might as well weigh Alex now and then maybe they’ll be ready to take blood when we come back.

After he was finished being weighed they were ready to take blood. Alex was really good, he didn’t even cry. This is the first time he didn’t cry.

We had to wait forty five minutes for the blood test. Then Dr R called us into the treatment room and told us the blood count for Alex was good. He also told us that the bone marrow from last Friday was a normal bone marrow. He said therapy still had to continue as a Leukemia cell could be in a spot that they couldn’t detect and it would then multiply and then take over the bone marrow, if therapy didn’t continue.

Dr R said he had ordered the chemotherapy drugs, so Alex would be having an I.V. and it would take about four hours to go through. Dr R looked at Alex’s thumb and the skin was coming off so he pulled the rest of the skin off. The doctor said his thumb was healed and he told Alex not to suck his thumb any more.

We went back to the waiting and play room. Alex painted, coloured and played with the toys and the computer.

Around eleven o’clock Alex had his I.V. put in by Lenore. She’s really good at putting it in. It always seems that she’s the only one who can put it in properly.

Before the I.V. was put in the nurse gave Charlie a prescription for Mercaptopurine. Charlie went and got the prescription filled. Alex and I went and got Charlie when it was time for the I.V. as Alex wanted Charlie to come in as well.

Alex cried quite a bit when he had the I.V. put in. He worked himself up before it was put in as he knew it was going to hurt.

Alex played some more and then about 15 minutes later he wanted to lie down. Alex cried and cried while he lied on the bed. He was so tired I don’t think he know what he wanted.

I left and got my lunch, when I came back Alex was asleep. It was 12:30 p.m. After I had my lunch, Charlie and I did a crossword puzzle.

Charlie left at two o’clock. Alex woke up just after Charlie left and he had to go to the bathroom. We came back and he wanted to sit at the table. Alex watched TV. most of the afternoon. Alex went to the bathroom about four times.

The I.V. first started with glucose water, anti-vomiting drug, cyclophosphamide, glucose water, Arabinoside cytosine (ARA-C), glucose water, a drug to make Alex urinate, anti-vomiting drugs and then glucose water.

I phoned Mom to let her know we might not have to stay overnight. Dr R said if Alex didn’t throw-up we could go home. Krisann gave us a list of things to look for, Alex has to drink a lot of fluids and go to the bathroom regularly. I have to make sure he urinates until I go to sleep. If Alex starts vomiting and isn’t drinking any fluids, I’m to phone the hospital and we may have to go to emergency.

Mom asked us to come for dinner, which will make things a lot easier.

We left the hospital at 4:45 p.m. and went to Mom and Dad’s for dinner. Alex went into Mom and Dad’s bed and slept until 6:30 p.m. We went home shortly afterwards. We got home around seven o’clock and Alex had his medicine. Alex had some juice, chips and a bowl of pea soup.

Alex went to bed after eight o’clock.

I cleaned up the house and did the dishes. I put Alex’s laundry in the washer.

I woke Alex up at ten o’clock to go to the bathroom. He didn’t mind at all and he was able to go.

Krisann said I should wake up Alex at midnight, take him to the bathroom and get him to drink more fluids.

I wrote in the journal until after eleven o’clock. I’m going to make Alex’s bed and then get ready for bed. I’ll try and get Alex to go to the bathroom and drink some more fluids. Then I’ll go to bed.

Alex came into bed in the middle of the night. At about four or five o’clock, I got out of bed and went to Alex’s bed.

I woke up at 9:45 a.m. and Charlie had gotten Alex his breakfast. Alex had a sandwich, cereal and a piece of cheese. Alex said he was still hungry but I wanted him to wait, so I told him to watch TV. When Mr. Dressup and Sesame Street were over he could have lunch. Alex screamed and yelled and said he couldn’t wait. But he ended up watching it until it was time for lunch.

Alex and Charlie had noodles for lunch.

I went to the post office to mail Paige’s baby present. I got back before two o’clock. Alex and I played croquet, then I read Alex his new book.

Charlie went to work before three o’clock.

Alex and I made a banana cake, Alex sure loves to help with the baking.

I can really see that Alex is better since the prednisone has been tapered off. He is now down to 10mg a day. He’s not so irritable and he seems to be eating a little less. It doesn’t seem to bother him if he doesn’t get the food he wants.

We had dinner around five o’clock. We watched TV. after dinner and Alex played with the etch a sketch. Before going to bed Alex listened to Big Bird. Alex went to bed after eight o’clock. He took the etch a sketch to bed.

I watched TV. and did some knitting I’m trying to finish the blanket that I’m making for Paige.

I also did my laundry and got our bag read for tomorrow as Alex has to stay overnight. It bothers me thinking about going to the hospital. Alex is about to start the next phase, he maybe in overnight or he may have to stay for four or five days. It all depends on his blood count.

It makes me feel so bad that he has to go through all this treatment. I know it’s the only way he’s going to get better but I start thinking about how normal my childhood was and I just want Alex to have that too.

It’s really amazing how strong he is, it seems like he’s even stronger than an adult. Children and adults think so very differently. Alex gets over the pain very quickly, usually five minutes later he’s playing or if it was too exhausting he’ll lie down. The thing is I wonder how he’s doing emotionally, does it effect him in some way? It also makes me wonder with all the drugs they give him how does his body grow normally?

Well it makes me feel better to write this down. Sometimes it’s the only way to get it out. People don’t want to hear about it after awhile. They want to tell you their problems, especially Annie. I can’t deal with that now, I only have one thing on my mind and that’s my baby, Alex.

I’m going to bed now and it’s 11:30 p.m.

I woke up at 9:30 p.m., I must have been really tired. I think it’s all the writing I’ve been doing. I’ve been trying to get the journal up to date.

Alex slept in his bed all night. Charlie had gotten Alex dressed and made him breakfast. Alex had pea soup and a banana. Alex said he was still hungry but I told him to wait. Charlie was making vegetables and shrimp with steamed rice, so Alex had some of that after ten o’clock.

Alex was still complaining he was hungry but I told him he had to wait until lunchtime. He was furious and started to scream and yell.

Charlie had gone to the mall before eleven o’clock. I put Alex in our bed and turned the TV. on, he watched Mr Dressup and Sesame street.

Charlie came home after 12:00 p.m., Alex and I had lunch, then I went to the mall to get Alex a pair of slippers. Alex has to go into the hospital to stay overnight. So I figured his old ones are too small and he needs some while he’s in there. I also bought Joan’s baby a present. I was going to send flowers but I thought an outfit would be better.

I came home after two o’clock. Charlie left for work before three o’clock.

Alex and I played some of Alex’s games before dinner. We had dinner before five o’clock. Alex complained after dinner he was still hungry, I told him to wait. Alex had a small pizza with his medicine at seven o’clock. Alex went to bed before eight o’clock.

I wrote in the journal from eight o’clock until 10:30 p.m. when Shirley phoned. We talked for about an hour. I also talked to Aaron, Shirley said he was concerned about Alex so he felt better after talking to me.

I wrote some more in the journal until close to midnight. I’ll get ready for bed soon.

Marla phoned and she had some things to lend to Alex. She lent Alex; talking Big Bird, some books, etch a sketch and some finger paints. Lanie wanted to wave to Alex, so we stood out in the sundeck. Marla’s neighbourhood has chicken pox, so she didn’t come in. Marla has had it but she doesn’t want to take the chance.

Alex listened to Big Bird then he wanted to paint.

I cleaned the bathrooms and Charlie got Alex lunch, they had noodles and meat. I had lunch around one o’clock.

I went to Toy City around 1:30 p.m. and got Alex a new puzzle. I got back at 2:00 p.m., Alex and I did his puzzle.

Charlie went to work before three o’clock, Alex and I went for a walk. Alex got a book from Margaret, Mom’s friend.

We had dinner around five o’clock. Alex complained the whole time I was cooking dinner. He said I can’t wait, I can’t wait.

Alex and I went outside after dinner. He rode his bike and I washed down the house.

We came in after seven o’clock, Alex had some cookies and cheese. Before we came in some guy came around trying to sell something I guess. I told him Alex couldn’t get too close to people I was afraid he might have something contagious. We were standing by the gate and he was standing by the garage. He said he would come around during the day. Charlie said I should of told him to get lost!

Alex had come into our bed in the middle of the night. I guess Charlie got up early, he was dressed when I woke up around nine o’clock. I heard him come in and out of the room. He must of kept on looking at Alex because Alex told him to go away.

Alex then heard Charlie tell Kelly he was taking him for a walk. Alex wanted to go too and started to complain he couldn’t move, that he was wet, cold. He said he couldn’t get dressed but he wanted to go for a walk. We finally got him dressed, Alex, Charlie and Kelly went for a walk.

Alex had rice and soup for breakfast. Then Charlie and Alex sat outside while I vacuumed the house.

Alex and I had pizza for lunch, then we did the puzzle.

We left the house around two o’clock, Charlie went and had his hair cut. Alex and I sat in the car.

We went for a drive then picked up dinner at Church’s Chicken. We then went to a park at 33rd near Arbutus Street. We took Alex to the playground but he was afraid he would fall down and hurt himself.

We went to Mom and Dad’s and gave them the VCR tapes. We left around nine o’clock.

Alex had a snack and was in bed by 10:30 p.m. I got ready for bed after eleven o’clock.

Charlie woke me up at 6:30 a.m. We had to be at the hospital by 8:30 a.m. Alex had stayed in his bed all night, which is the first time since we have been home. Alex was still asleep so I didn’t bother waking him up.

I had breakfast, showered and then got dressed.

Alex got up after seven o’clock. He was quite cranky which isn’t unusual. He just wanted cheese and crackers for breakfast. He wanted to take pea soup to the hospital, so we put a can of pea soup in the thermos.

We left at 7:45 p.m. and got to the hospital by 8:30 p.m. There was only one other child there. Alex wanted his soup right away, so he sat at the table and had the whole thermos. The nurse gave Alex his sedative, she didn’t give him one of the sedatives as he had an allergic reaction to it. The sedative he’s allergic to is Phenergan.

At 10:30 a.m. Alex, Charlie and I went into the treatment room, Alex wasn’t sleepy at all, he was wide awake. Alex was aware of everything that was going on. Alex cried quite a lot, the spinal tap didn’t bother him too much. The bone marrow bothered him more he said it hurt his legs. The doctor has to push quite a number of times to get the blood from the bone marrow and they also take a chip of bone.

Charlie had to turn away but it didn’t bother me too much. After it was finished Alex got to pick a prize from the treasure chest. He got a puzzle.

Before the bone marrow and spinal tap Alex had blood taken. Alex got a prize from another treasure chest.

Alex went back to the play and waiting room and laid down on a bed. Charlie got him something to eat then Alex went to sleep.

We left the hospital before noon. Alex went and slept in our bed. I went shopping and bought him a croquet set. I’m trying to find him some quieter toys. I don’t want him to be too active in his condition.

I got home before four o’clock and woke Alex up for his medicine. We now have to taper the prednisone which we all will be glad of. Alex went back to sleep, Charlie went and got dinner. Charlie and I had dinner after five o’clock. Alex didn’t wake up until after seven o’clock. He had dinner, then we played croquet and did his puzzle.

Alex said he was hungry but I told him his stomach was too tight and he had to wait. He said okay. He still wants cheezies but he ate a whole big bag this week. He can have another bag next week.

AT 10:00 p.m. Alex had his medicine, he had 10 mg.

Alex is coloring with the crayons and book he got from the hospital.

We’re going to bed, it’s eleven o’clock.

Alex and I woke up around eight o’clock, Charlie went into Alex’s bed around six o’clock. Charlie said it was too bright. Alex wanted pea soup for breakfast. I got him dressed and tried to talk him out of having pea soup but there was no way. He wanted it really badly, Alex had one bowl and wanted another one but I told him he couldn’t have any more that he had to wait two hours. He had a fit but I stood my ground and at ten o’clock he had a snack. He had one piece of cheese, a cracker, roast beef and four pieces of broccoli. He said he was still hungry but I told he had to wait until lunchtime. We went for a walk and that got his mind off it.

Alex had macaroni and cheese and pea soup for lunch. Then we went to Maple Ridge to see Rick Hansen, we had to wait quite awhile but we got to see him. Alex sat in the car while Charlie and I stood outside and saw him wheel by in his wheelchair.

We went to Dairy Queen after and then we went to London Drugs and Save-on-Foods. Alex and I stayed in the car while Charlie went in the stores.

We came home after four o’clock and started dinner. After we had dinner Alex said he was still hungry. We went for a walk around 6:30 p.m. and when we came back Alex had a bath. We have a problem getting Alex to have a bath. He seems very scared, it seems like he thinks he’s going to hurt himself. After his bath he had a snack and his medicine.

Then he watched a movie we rented, Dumbo. He said he was still hungry but I told him he couldn’t have any more. Alex’s stomach is now soft so his eating less is helping a lot. He doesn’t seem to have any trouble breathing now. Alex went to bed after ten o’clock.

I got ready for bed around eleven o’clock.

Alex woke us up before eight o’clock. He had wet the bed again and it had gotten on Charlie’s t-shirt. Charlie told him that it was disgusting that he had wet on his shirt and Alex told him that I had done it.

I got Alex cleaned up and dressed, I was about to get his breakfast when he told me he had to have pea soup. Alex had a temper tantrum and started screaming and yelling. I told him he could have one bowl and he had to promise that he wouldn’t ask for any more. Alex said yes. As soon as he finished the bowl he asked for more and I told him that he promised and he said I did not.

Then he had another temper tantrum so I sent him to his room and told him when he could behave he could come out. He came out about ten minutes later and said he wanted scrambled eggs but he didn’t eat them. He wanted soup so he ended up eating hot and sour soup with rice.

I left the house and went to the mall and came back around 11:30 a.m. Alex was asleep and he woke up not long afterwards. Alex had the rest of the pea soup and rice curry for lunch. At 2:30 p.m. Alex had cheezies with his medicine.

Alex then had macaroni and cheese, he had a couple of spoonfuls and then went for a nap. Alex’s breathing is quite heavy and he says it hurts when he sits up. I think because his stomach is so big there isn’t any more room left.

Alex woke up after five o’clock and I started to make dinner, we had BBQ steak, peas and corn. As soon as we finished he wanted something else to eat. I told him he had to wait a couple of hours. He was just furious, he screamed and yelled.

We went for a walk so it would get his mind off food. Alex had a snack at 8:00 p.m. and was in bed by nine o’clock.

Shirley came over at 9:30 p.m., we talked for over an hour then she went home. I cleaned up and then got read for bed before midnight.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 19 1987

Alex woke me up at three o’clock this morning. He wanted his diaper changed. I went back to bed and the swelling below my eyes is worse. I went back to sleep. I woke up around eight o’clock and checked my eyes and they’re about the same.

Charlie had got Alex dressed and was trying to get Alex something to eat. He wanted pea soup and we didn’t have any. Alex told Charlie to go to the store and buy it. Charlie told him the store wasn’t open and Alex started to scream and yell.

I had to put Alex in his room, he stayed there for about ten minutes. When he came out he had calmed down quite a lot. Alex decided he would have noodles and ham. Then since I was having toast he wanted some too. Alex finished about a plate of noodles, sliced turkey and potatoes. He ate about half the toast.

Alex wanted to play a game so he and I played. While we played he munched on popcorn and he had one liquorice.

I phoned to make an appointment to see Dr W and I was able to see him today. My appointment is for 11:50 a.m.

Charlie and Alex got ready to go to the hospital. Alex doesn’t have to have any treatment, they’ll take blood and then the doctor wants to check his thumb. They left after ten o’clock,. Alex didn’t mind that I didn’t go, which is really good. I don’t like him depending on me so much. He can depend on me but I think he should depend on us both.

I cleaned up the house and I was all ready to go before eleven o’clock. Dr W was really nice, when he came in he asked about Alex. Then he came over and took my hands and asked how’s the kid. I told him what happened and he said it was probably an allergy but it could be hay fever. He gave me some pills to take and some cream to put on my skin. He also said I could put ice or ice water on my face five minutes out of every hour. The doctor said the swelling should be gone by forty eight hours. When I was leaving he said say hi to Alex and tell him I hope he gets better soon.

I got home after noon and took a pill and put the cream on my face.

Charlie and Alex got back at 12:30 p.m. and Charlie said the appointment for Friday is 8:30 a.m. I asked him why it was so early and he was told because Alex is to have a bone marrow and spinal tap. I told Charlie the last time Alex had a bone marrow and spinal tap our appointment was for 10:30 a.m. Charlie asked me to phone, the receptionist said the last time Dr R didn’t tell them Alex needed a spinal tap and bone marrow. So we have to go there early.

Alex had a can of pea soup and a bowl of hot and sour soup with rice for lunch. He had some cheezies while we played a game.

I talked to Joan and she is two centimetres dilated and the doctor could feel the baby’s head. Maybe she’ll have the baby soon!

I woke Alex up at 3:30 p.m. to take his medicine and he had some cheezies with it. Alex went back to sleep and he woke up at about six o’clock. Alex had some more hot and sour soup with rice. He wanted more pea soup but I’m trying to limit him one can a day. There is probably too much salt in it. Alex also had roast beef and potatoes before he had a nap.

We watched TV. and played another game, Alex wanted another bowl of hot and sour soup with rice. He had popcorn with unsalted butter, a bowl of tomato soup which he ate a little bit, and finally cheese and crackers. At 11:30 p.m. he said he was still hungry. I told him to wait, until Pa comes home and you can ask him. He said Pa can’t get me anything his arms are outside!

Alex is still awake and it’s 12:00 a.m. I’m get ready to go to sleep.

I woke up around nine o’clock, my eyes are bothering me. I went and looked in the mirror and my eyes were swollen. I phoned the doctor and I got an appointment for 12:45 p.m.

Charlie had gotten Alex dressed and was giving Alex his breakfast. Alex had a can of pea soup and wanted some pancakes with me. Later Alex had some cream of mushroom soup and a small pizza.

I was feeling pretty bad my eyes felt so swollen, I could really feel them. Charlie had gone grocery shopping and by the time he got back it was time for me to go.

I got to the doctors, I saw Dr. M as he was the doctor on call. The doctor said it was probably an allergy and he gave me a prescription. I went to London Drugs and got it filled. I got home after one o’clock. I took the pills around 1:30 p.m. By two o’clock I was feeling pretty drowsy.

Alex had a nap after I left and woke up after two o’clock. Charlie watched Alex while I had a sleep. I woke up after four o’clock and I was sick to my stomach.

Charlie had dinner all ready so we ate after five o’clock. Alex ate about half his dinner. Then he said he had to have a rest so he went to lie down.

Alex didn’t sleep he stayed in bed for a short period. Alex said he wanted some more pea soup. He ate a bowl of soup. Laura phoned and said they were coming over. They came before seven o’clock. Alex wouldn’t talk to any of them. He doesn’t seem to want to talk to anyone but Charlie and myself. Mr & Mrs Chew, Laura, Andrea and Robert had come, they left around 7:30 p.m.

Just after they left Alex said he had to have rice. He had a temper tantrum, so Charlie made him the rice and when he got it he only ate two spoonfuls, he said didn’t want it. He said he wanted roast beef and potatoes that we had for dinner.

Alex wanted some shrimp crackers, so Charlie made him some and he took his medicine. Alex went to bed around ten o’clock.

My eyes are getting worse, the swelling is getting worse and the skin is quite itchy. I took another pill at ten o’clock. I got ready for bed at 10:30 p.m.

Alex slept with us last night. I woke up after eight o'clock. Charlie was getting Alex dressed and he had Alex's breakfast ready. Alex had french toast and cheezies.

I changed the sheets as they were wet.

Charlie went to cut the grass and Alex wanted to go outside. We all went out and while Charlie cut the grass Alex and I blew bubbles. Alex also used his bubble mover while Charlie cut the grass .

Alex wanted to come in the house and have something to eat. He had some soup Charlie had made and rice. Alex laid in our bed and watched t.v.

I went out to the mall, I need the break. It's really hard fighting with Alex about taking his medicine. I came back at 3:30 p.m. Alex had been sleeping and he had just woken up. Charlie went out as soon as I came back. Alex wanted me to make hot and sour soup. So when Charlie came back from his walk, he made the soup.

Alex had hot and sour soup, plain macaroni and two bowls of pea soup for dinner. Alex was in a really good mood,it seems once he is really full he's really good. He doesn't do much complaining.

Alex had cheezies, shrimp crackers and a piece of cheese just before he went to bed. Alex now weighs about 34 pounds.

Alex still doesn't want to sleep in his bed. He cried and cried because I put him in his bed. I feel he just has to try and sleep in his own bed.

Blair phoned tonight and Paul invited us up this summer which would be really good since Alex can't go into public places for the first year.

Alex went to bed around ten o'clock and I got ready for bed around 11:45 p.m.

Alex came into our bed around six o'clock. Alex woke me up around eight o'clock telling me how hungry he was and that he wanted macaroni and cheese. I told him we didn't have any and he said I want it! He then told me to make it.

So here I am making macaroni and cheese at 8:30 a.m.! All the time I'm making it Alex is commenting at how slow I am and how come it's taking so long. I gave Alex some macaroni with melted cheez whiz and he screamed I don't like it meaning the cheese whiz. Alex told Charlie to put it in the oven.

I then gave Alex plain macaroni with nothing on it. Alex said it tasted really good, then when he finished it he said it tasted terrible.

I finished making the macaroni and cheese the usual way. Alex then wanted a bowl of cereal, he finished the cereal and wanted some pancakes. I made some pancakes and he ate about two of them. I felt totally exhausted and I still had to do all the dishes.

I did the laundry as Alex had wet our bed and his bed.

Then Alex and I played one of his games. I had a snack then got ready to go out.

We left the house around 2:30 p.m. I went and had my hair cut at Toppys by Amy. She asked about Alex but I don't think she realizes how seriously ill Alex is.

We went to Kentucky Fried Chicken and sat in the car and had dinner. Then we went to Mom and Dad's, Joan and the kids were there. We stayed until 9:30 p.m and came home.

Alex had his medicine then had some cheezies and brushed his teeth. Alex went to sleep around 10:45 p.m. I got ready for bed around 11:00 p.m.

Alex had decided last night that he wanted to sleep in our bed, so Charlie slept in Alex's bed. Alex woke me up around 7:30 a.m. saying "I'm wet and I'm cold, get me dressed." He then told me to hurry up and he started to cry.

I got him cleaned up and dressed, then he told me he wanted a salad. I told him we didn't have any salad but we had tomatoes and cucumbers. So I put the tomatoes and cucumbers in a bowl with some salad dressing. He ate about half of it and then he had a bite of the danish and then Alex wanted some rice noodles and beef. Later on he had some potato chips.

I started getting ready around nine o'clock. We left for the hospital at 9:45 a.m. and we brought Alex some rice and vegetables. He wanted to bring half a bag of potato chips.

Alex had a shot just after we got to the hospital. An hour later Dr. R came to look at Alex. I told him Alex's thumb didn't look very good. The doctor looked at it and said his thumb would have to be opened as there was too much infection in his thumb. We went to the isolation room and Dr R lanced Alex's thumb and got the infection out and cleaned it. The nurse put a bandage on his thumb and Dr R gave Alex a pair of tweezers and scissors. The nurse gave us some gauze, bandages and some salt water. We're suppose to change and clean Alex's thumb every day.

Alex went back to lay down on one of the beds. I went to buy my lunch, before I could buy it Charlie and Alex came and got me. It was time for Alex to have his I.V. Alex started to cry he said it'll hurt. I told him yes it would hurt but just for a minute. The nurse said it's very important to tell them it does hurt.

The nurse, Heather got Alex to blow bubbles while he had the I.V. put in by Martina. I don't think she put it in very well as he complained the whole time it was in.

The social worker stopped in to see us. Her name is Janice, she seems like a very nice person. She is very caring and listens very well.

We left the hospital around 1:30 p.m. We dropped by Mom and Dad's as Joan was staying there, while Mom and Dad looked after Mitch and Karen. Joan had a present for Alex. We left at 2:30 p.m.

We got home just after three o'clock. Alex and I had something to eat. I started cooking dinner around four o'clock, for Alex. Shirley came over around 5:30 p.m. to stay with Alex so Charlie and I could go out for dinner.

Charlie and I left before six o'clock and went to the KEG for dinner. We had a really nice dinner. It sure was nice to get out we really needed the break.

We got back before eight o'clock, Shirley left shortly after. They were going away for the weekend.

I gave Alex his medicine and we had rented some movies so Alex watched a movie in our room. At eleven o'clock Alex decided he wanted macaroni and cheese. I told him I wasn't going to make it and he then had a temper tantrum. Alex settled on cream of chicken soup. We then got ready for bed.

I don't know how many times Alex complained in the night, he had come into our bed in the middle of the night. Around three o'clock he complained his feet were dirty and he took them out of the covers. I said what do you want me to do. He said put the sheets back on, my feet are cold. He was yelling at me. By this time I've had enough of him continually waking me up, so I went into Alex's bed.

Alex woke up around eight o'clock. Charlie had changed his diaper during the early morning and put a towel on the bed where it was wet. Charlie got Alex dress and got him his breakfast. Alex had cereal, toast, eggs, a couple pieces of cheese and smurf-getti. For lunch he had rice, baby corn, mushrooms, chow mein and rice noodles, which Charlie had bought a take out for.

Alex went for a nap around one o'clock. I took Kelly for a walk.

We got a nice note from Megan at Dr. E's office.

Alex woke up at two o'clock and wanted me to hold him. He said his stomach was very tight, he then went and laid down in our bed and watched Mr. Dressup.

Joan phoned around two o'clock she still hasn't had the baby. Alex was mad that I was on the phone. He started throwing things at me, pinching me and he spat in my face. It sure is hard to discipline Alex, he is really taking advantage of it.

Alex ate some potato chips then he watched a Muppet movie. Around 4:30 p.m. he wanted the rest of the hot and sour soup, so I heated it up for him and he ate most of it. Then he wanted dinner, we had beef and rice noodles. Alex went back to our bed and rested.

At seven o'clock he wanted something else. So I heated up the frozen pizza, he wanted me to heat up some noodles first and then he had a small pizza (single serving).

Alex is very irritable he expects us to know exactly what he's talking about. If we don't, he gets absolutely furious, sometimes he gets so mad he pinches us.

Alex went to our bed after eating and I had to wake him up around nine o'clock to take his medicine, he was very impatient.

We went to bed around eleven o'clock.

Alex woke us up at 6:45 p.m. He had come into bed in the middle of the night. He had wet so much he had soaked through his clothes, the sheet and the mattress cover. He was complaining he was wet, cold and hungry.

I got him dressed and fixed him a bowl of cereal. Charlie told me to go back to sleep, he would look after Alex. I went into Alex's bed and slept until nine o'clock.

Alex was getting very upset as he was so very hungry. Charlie thinks he eats too much but it's the Prednisone. The Prednisone makes him very hungry, they call it moon face.

We got ready to go to the hospital. We left at 9:45 a.m. Alex complained that his thumb is itchy.

The nurse gave Alex his shot not long after we got there and he got a prize. He cried when he got his shot.

Then another nurse took some blood from Alex. We had to wait about an hour.

Krisann gave us a sheet listing Alex's blood counts from the time we got into the hospital until the 11th. She then told me that the platelet count should be over 100,000 and the ANC should be over 1,000. She also told me Alex is in remission meaning that he has no Cancer cells in his body.

Krisann said he'll not have any chemotherapy or shots next week, so it'll give his body a rest and that way his body cant get the blood count up. The next week they'll start chemotherapy if his platelet count is 100,000 and his ANC is 1,000. The ANC is the absolute neutraphilcount. It is the first line of defense against infection.

We left the hospital around 11:45 a.m. Alex wanted to eat so we stopped at Shanghai for a take out. Alex complained the whole time Charlie was in the restaurant. He got so mad at one point he slapped my face. I yelled at him, he was very upset I yelled and he started to cry.

We drove home and then had lunch. Alex eats a lot, it's all he ever thinks about. He does nothing much but eat.

Alex went for a nap shortly after three o'clock. I went to the mall around 3:30 p.m. I really need this time to get away from it all.

I came home around five o'clock. Charlie was already preparing dinner and Alex was sitting at the table wondering how come dinner was taking so long.

I bought Alex a new jacket and a snoopy hat. Alex tried them on and said they were pretty nice.

Alex ate a lot for dinner, broccoli, mushrooms, rice, and B.B.Q chicken. Just after he finished dinner he wanted some popcorn. He had a small bowl of popcorn, then some potato chips and finally bread sticks.

Around nine o'clock Alex wanted to go to bed. Alex had his medicine then I brushed his teeth and he swished Nilstat in his mouth. By 9:30 p.m. he was in bed.

I watched t.v. and wrote in the journal and went to bed around eleven o'clock.

Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 11, 1987

Alex woke us up before seven o'clock. We had to go to the Cancer clinic at nine o'clock and then we had to go to the hospital at 10:30 a.m. The nurse at the Cancer ward had made the appointment so we didn't know what to expect or even where to go.

We saw a doctor there and all he wanted to know about was if Alex was going to have radiation. I was told by one of the nurses at the Oncology clinic that he wouldn't, so I told him. He said he would phone and find out. He came back and said Alex wouldn't have radiation which I was glad of since they would have to put radiation at his brain. I feel the brain is something people shouldn't fool around with.

He said they would be using a drug that is put into the spinal fluid. They have to use either Methotrexate or radiation to stop the cancer cells from going into the brain.

We had to sign some papers for them to use the medical information and for them to perform certain operations. The doctor said some operations or procedures are performed at the Cancer clinic that cannot be performed at the hospital. We left before 9:30 a.m. It was too early to go to the hospital so we went to McDonald's for breakfast.

We got to the hospital before 10:30 a.m. Alex had his shot not long after we got there. He had a blood test, then the doctor saw him. I told the doctor he still had the cough and that I thought there was something wrong with his thumb. The doctor gave us a prescription for Bactrim for his cough and some cream to put on his thumb. He said his thumb was infected. He said this thumb would have to be bandaged so Alex wouldn't suck it. Alex was very upset that he couldn't suck his thumb. The doctor told him he could suck the other thumb but Alex told me it doesn't have the same kind of skin.

I went and got the prescription and came back. We had to stay an extra half hour as they thought maybe Alex was allergic to the shot. Nothing happened so we left after one o'clock.

As soon as we got home Charlie got ready to go to work. He left at 2:30 p.m.

Alex was hungry as usual, so I got him something to eat. We had dinner around five o'clock.

Shirley came over around eight o'clock. Alex was having a funny craving, so I asked Shirley to pick some things up. Alex had salt and vinegar chips that Shirley brought. He went to bed around nine o'clock.

Shirley left around 10:30 p.m. I got ready for bed after eleven o'clock.

Alex woke us up after seven o'clock. He just seems to be starving.

I go him dressed and got him breakfast. He's terribly impatient, first of all he usually doesn't know what he wants to eat. Then when he has decided what he wants, he wants it right away. He tells me how slow I am and then he usually starts crying and screaming. He tells me he just can't wait.

I find it very exhausting, I'm continually cooking and washing dishes. I don't think Alex really is full but his stomach is so big, you would think he would be.

Alex asked me how come it's Mothers Day again. I said what are you talking about? He said we had it last week. I really don't know where he gets these ideas!

I had asked Mom and Dad to come over for Mothers Day but Mom said it wasn't fair after all the things we have gone through. So she asked us to come over for dinner.

Alex bought me a gold bracelet and twelve red roses for Mothers Day.

We went to Mom and Dad's in the afternoon. Mom gave Alex a corsage to give me for Mothers Day, which was really nice.

Joan has been in the hospital as she started bleeding. She's not due to have the baby for another week. The doctors thought she might have to be induced but they're doing tests. So they'll have the results next week. She came over for an hour, the doctor said she could go out for an hour.

We got home after nine o'clock. Alex went to bed not long after. I went to bed after eleven o'clock.

We woke up around eight o'clock. We had to go to the hospital at 10:30 a.m. I got Alex dressed and got Alex his breakfast. Alex doesn't eat breakfast food, he likes things like noodles, soup or rice for breakfast.

We left the house before ten o'clock. When we got to the clinic we were told to wait outside as the waiting area was too full. At 11:45 a.m. I went and asked how much longer it would be. The receptionist said just a minute and I'll go and check. She came back and said we're just about to start the spinal tap. I said what do you mean, he's sitting out here waiting to go in. She said Oh, that's Alex? I said yes. She said just a minute. She came back and said it would be another five minutes.

I came back and told Charlie and he said probably another half an hour. We finally went in and right away the nurse took us into an examining room. Alex had his shot, before he had a sedative.

We went out in the play and waiting room, Alex wanted to lie down. Alex fell asleep almost right away. We went into the treatment room and Alex had a bone marrow and a spinal tap. Alex woke up for only a short time while they put the needles in.

Charlie didn't come in as he couldn't stand to watch it. They finished the bone marrow and spinal tap within about a half hour. Then they put an I.V. in, Alex had chemotherapy, Daunomycin and Vincristine. It took about an hour for the I.V. to go through.

A half hour after Alex took the sedative he had a reaction to it. His face became flushed and it took a couple of hours to go away. We had waited an hour for the chemotherapy to go through and then the doctor said because of the reaction we would have to wait at least an hour. The doctor didn't want to give Alex anything as it would make him sleepy.

We left at around 3:30 p.m., when we got to the car Alex said he had to go to the bathroom. I had a lot of trouble understanding Alex, it sounded like his tongue was swollen.

We went back to the clinic, I asked the nurse if it was normal. Another doctor came and looked at Alex and said Alex would have to drink something and she wanted Alex to sit up. Alex had a lot of trouble sitting up, he was very drowsy from the sedative. He had something to drink and he seemed okay. The doctor came and checked him and said he could go home.

We went to Mom and Dad's as we were afraid Alex might have a reaction. Dad and Charlie went and got fish and chips for dinner.

Alex slept all the time we were there. He woke up for a moment when we left. We got home before eight o'clock and Alex went back to sleep. Alex had his medincine before he went to sleep. I got ready for bed after eleven o'clock.

Alex woke us up before eight o'clock. He was soaking wet and so was our bed. He doesn't want to sleep in his own bed.

Alex gets very irritable and demands that things are done right away. I got Alex cleaned up, dress and then made him breakfast. He eats an awful lot. Before he became so sick Alex never liked eating breakfast very much. Since he's been on Prednisone he eats about three times as much. Alex eats continually throughout the day and his stomach is getting so big. What bothers me is that it looks like Alex's skin on his stomach has stretched as far as it can.

We had dinner after five o'clock. Alex kept on eating until around nine o'clock when he decided it was time he went to bed. I went to bed around eleven o'clock

We got up early as we had to be at the hospital at ten o'clock. We left after nine o'clock. When we got to the receptionist desk we were told we had to register Alex as an out patient. Charlie went and registered Alex, I took Alex into the clinic.

There were a lot of children inside the clinic, it was almost full. It was a bit overwhelming seing so many people since when we had our tour there was only one child when we went. We had to wait about half an hour before they did anything.

Alex didn't want to leave me, he was trying to get use to his surroundings.

The occupational therapist has a painting class every Wednesday, after awhile Alex sat at the table and painted a picture.

A nurse came and asked us to come into the lab where they take blood. Alex cried for a little while. After they finished taking blood Alex got a puppet finger. Then we went back out and Alex played some more.

A nurse, Krisann came and asked us to follow her to one of the rooms. She gave Alex a shot, after she finished she took Alex to the treasure chest and he got to pick a prize.

Then the doctor came and asked us to follow him to one of the rooms. He checked Alex and I told him that Alex still had a cough. The doctor checked his chest and he said it was okay.

We went back out and we had to wait, as there is a period of time to wait after Alex has his shot.

We left after one o'clock and were home before two o'clock. Charlie got ready for work and left at 2:45 p.m. I gave Alex his medicine and then he went for a nap.

Alex woke up around five o'clock. We had dinner and then we just watched t.v. and played. Alex went to bed around nine o'clock. I got ready for bed around eleven o'clock.

Alex woke me up around seven o'clock. He said he wanted something to eat. I went and made him toast. Breakfast came before eight o'clock and Alex ate most of it. They came to take blood half way through breakfast.

The nurse came in around nine o'clock and said so you're going home today. I said we are? She said that's what it says on the chart. She said the doctor would be around to talk to us about.

Dr. B came and said Dr. R would be in to see us and that Alex should be able to go home today.

Charlie went to get lunch and while he was away, Dr R came by. He said Alex could go home today but since he had to have a shot tomorrow he could stay another night. I told him it was quite alright we could come in tomorrow.

The nurse came in with the prescription which had to be filled by the adjoining hospitals pharmacy. Since Charlie wasn't there and Alex didn't want to be left alone another nurse took the prescription to the pharmacy.

We had our lunch in the quiet room and we finished around 1:30 p.m. Charlie took Alex's stuff down to the car, it took him about three trips as there was so much stuff.

We went to the pharmacy to pick up Alex's medication but they didn't have the prescription, so they phoned to the ward. Someone told them that we would have to come back, by this time Charlie and Alex had gone to the car. So I went and got them and we went back upstairs. When we got there they told us the nurse had left it in her pocket and was already down there.

I asked them why we were told to come back and they said we really don't know. Boy was I ever getting cranky. So we went back to the pharmacy and before we got half way there, the nurse came up from behind us with the prescription. She said she had gone earlier but the pharmacy was closed.

We took the prescription to the pharmacy and got Alex's medication. We didn't have to pay for the Prednisone as it is paid by the cancer clinic. It was after two o'clock by the time we left the hospital.

Charlie drove my car and I drove his car, as his car had Alex's car seat in it. We went to London Drugs to buy a thermometer. Charlie then went to work, Alex and I went home. We got home before four o'clock, Alex went and laid down.

I forgot Alex hadn't had his Prednisone and it was already after four o'clock. I phoned the hospital to check and make sure when I should give the next dosage. They told me to give it to him now and then at nine or ten o'clock.

I crushed the four pills up and mixed some chocolate syrup with them. Alex screamed and yelled about taking it but I finally got him to take it. I don't think crushing the pills is a very good idea, it seems like he doesn't get it all.

Alex rested most of the night and when it was time to give him his next medicine, I asked him how he wanted to take it. Did he want it crushed with chocolate syrup or did he want to chew them? Believe it or not he wanted to chew them and he wanted a slice of cheese and apple juice with them.

So Alex chewed them down and ate his cheese and drank his juice, it sure was a lot easier.

We got ready for bed around eleven o'clock.

I woke up around eight o'clock. Charlie phoned not long after and told me to hurry up, as he was having trouble with Alex.

I got to the hospital after ten o'clock. The parking lot was completely full, it took me about ten minutes to find a space.

Alex has to have a blood transfusion, as his blood count is too low.

Mom and Dad came around one o'clock. Charlie and I went to their house. Charlie left around two thirty for work. I sat and watched t.v. and played with the dogs. I had ham and a bun for dinner. I went back to the hospital after five o'clock.

Alex was very talkative so it was pretty difficult to get him to go to bed. We got ready for bed around ten o'clock.

I woke up around eight o'clock and felt just great. It sure was good sleeping at home, I don't think I woke up throughout the whole night.

Charlie phoned around nine o'clock thinking that I wasn't up yet but I was almost ready to go.

I got to the hospital before ten o'clock. Alex wouldn't take his medicine, so I gave it to him.

We left the hospital after ten o'clock and got home around eleven o'clock. Alex wanted to go to bed he seemed very tired. Alex slept until two or three o'clock.

Alex wanted pizza so Charlie went to Boston Pizza and got a take out.

Alex seemed very tired, I guess his blood count must be down. We ate the pizza and Alex rested some more.

We got back to the hospital before eight o'clock. Alex had his medicine almost right away. I left the hospital around nine o'clock. Alex asked where I was going and Charlie told him I was going to another room in the hospital.

I got home around ten o'clock and it felt okay being in the house by myself. I started to clean up the house. After ten o'clock Shirley phoned, she was at the hospital. She wondered if I wanted some company. I told her okay and she arrived before eleven o'clock.

She said she hadn't been home all day. Aaron had been complaining about her being out so much. All that does is drive her further away. Shirley stayed until 12:30 a.m. I finished cleaning up and got ready for bed around one o'clock.

Alex and I had a really good sleep. It sure was nice.

Breakfast came around eight o'clock. The nurse left us alone as Alex was just waking up. She left the medicine for me to give Alex.

We had breakfast and the nurse said the pass was all ready and she would get the medicine ready.

Charlie came around ten o'clock and we got Alex's medicine . We had to sign a form for Alex's day pass.

Alex didn't feel very good on the way home and I had to sit with him. We got home after eleven o'clock.

Alex wanted to play with his new toys. We all played with the airport and then we played with Alex's car track. The track came with a car and Alex already had one car that he got from Santa, so we all took turns playing with it.

Alex went to sleep in the afternoon. I was really tired too so we both fell asleep in our bed. I slept for about half an hour. Shirley phoned around two o'clock and said she would try and catch us at the hospital either today or tomorrow.

Charlie said Annie phoned but I was too tired to phone her. Anyways she phoned about an hour later. I told her exactly how things were going and she seem quite surprised. She said she was having a mass for Alex, which was really nice.

We had dinner at home.

We gave Alex his medicine throughout the day. It's a bit overwhelming but I guess we'll get use to it.

We went back to the hospital around eight o'clock. The hospital was really busy so we had to wait a long time for Alex's medicine.

Marla had been up and left Alex a view master and a sticker book. I felt bad that she had come all the way in.

I was so tired from sleeping at the hospital, I told Charlie he could sleep there this weekend. Alex was furious that I wouldn't sleep with him. He said I hate Pa I want you to sleep with me.

I sneaked out of the hospital and as I was leaving I heard Alex ask where's Mama going? Charlie told him I went to another room and Alex seemed okay after that.

I went home around ten o'clock. It sure was weird being in the house, there was no one there not even Kelly. He was at Mom and Dad's. It was so quiet in the house it was almost scary. I watched t.v. for awhile, then I started getting ready for bed. I went to bed around eleven o'clock. It took me awhile to fall asleep.

Alex slept pretty good last night. The nurse came to get blood around seven o'clock, and breakfast came not long after. Charlie came around ten o'clock.

Sheila came and asked if we would like to take Alex home on a day pass for Saturday and Sunday. I said that would be great. Sheila went away to make the necessary arrangements.

Alex had his shot before lunch time. I phoned and told Mom that I wanted to stay at the hospital as Alex was to get chemotherapy today, but I didn't know what time it would be coming.

Charlie left for work. The chemotherapy came around 2:30 p.m., it took about one hour and then they took the I.V. out.

Dr R came and said Alex could go out on a day pass this weekend. I asked when we could go home and he said well we usually keep them in for about twenty eight days but maybe since you live so close Alex could be a day patient. The doctor said he would look at Alex's chart and decided when Alex could go home. Maybe by the end of next week.

Dinner came not long after and I then phoned Mom and asked if they could come around seven o'clock.

Alex had been quite naughty all day and I needed a break. Mom and Dad came around 6:45 p.m., I went to their house and did our laundry as Alex didn't have any clothes to wear tomorrow. After I did the laundry, I had a shower. While I was waiting for the laundry to dry I phoned Shirley to let her know we would be going home on a day pass.

I stopped at McDonald's and got a take out. I got back to the hospital around nine o'clock. Mom said Paul and Laura came to visit Alex and they brought him a small race track Mom said Laura got all chocked up about Alex. Laura said Alex sure is smart in comparison to my son, Robert. You wouldn't know there is only a few months between them.

Mom and Dad left shortly after I came back.

It really did Alex and I both good to get away from each other. He was a lot better towards me. We got ready for bed around ten o'clock. There were no people in the other beds, so it felt like we were in a private room. Alex didn't like it too much, he said all his friends had left and he wanted them to come back.

Alex sleeps pretty good now. Charlie came around ten o'clock. We went into the playroom for lunch. Alex eats really well now. It's so much better eating in there it's nice and bright.

Alex is getting back to his old self. I figure he's getter better, he's become very bossy. He's really enjoying the freedom and enjoys all the toys in the playroom. He especially likes the toy car and the gas pump.

Mom and Dad came around one o'clock to sit with Alex. I went to our house as Alex wants to eat rice. Charlie had made Congee yesterday and Alex had eaten almost the whole thermos full of it. I went home to make Alex rice pudding I figured he might like something different.

I made the pudding, cleaned up the house and had a shower. I was just getting ready to go when Annie phoned. She said where the heck have you guys been? I told her Alex was in the hospital and he has Cancer. She said stop kidding me, I said I would never kid about something as serious as that. I then told her everything that had happened. After I told her everything she started telling me her troubles as usual, but I cut her off and told her I had to get back to the hospital.

I went and got a take out from White Spot before going back to the hospital. My throat felt sore so I went to the drugstore to buy Dequadin but they didn't have any. I got back to the hospital around 6:30 p.m. I wore a mask in case I did have a cold. Mom gave me some Tylenol to take.

Mom said Shirley phoned and she would be up later. Before I had finished dinner Shirley came up. We both ended up wearing a mask, she said she felt a cold coming on as well.

Bart, Jolene, Mrs Chew and Carrie came around seven o'clock. They were very understanding and wanted to know all the details. Bart was quite interested in the medication and the therapy as he had Cancer a few years earlier. Carrie and Alex played in the playroom and had a good time playing with all the toys. They left around eight o'clock. Shirley left not long afterwards.

Alex and I got ready for bed around nine o'clock.
