We woke up around eight o'clock. We had to go to the hospital at 10:30 a.m. I got Alex dressed and got Alex his breakfast. Alex doesn't eat breakfast food, he likes things like noodles, soup or rice for breakfast.
We left the house before ten o'clock. When we got to the clinic we were told to wait outside as the waiting area was too full. At 11:45 a.m. I went and asked how much longer it would be. The receptionist said just a minute and I'll go and check. She came back and said we're just about to start the spinal tap. I said what do you mean, he's sitting out here waiting to go in. She said Oh, that's Alex? I said yes. She said just a minute. She came back and said it would be another five minutes.
I came back and told Charlie and he said probably another half an hour. We finally went in and right away the nurse took us into an examining room. Alex had his shot, before he had a sedative.
We went out in the play and waiting room, Alex wanted to lie down. Alex fell asleep almost right away. We went into the treatment room and Alex had a bone marrow and a spinal tap. Alex woke up for only a short time while they put the needles in.
Charlie didn't come in as he couldn't stand to watch it. They finished the bone marrow and spinal tap within about a half hour. Then they put an I.V. in, Alex had chemotherapy, Daunomycin and Vincristine. It took about an hour for the I.V. to go through.
A half hour after Alex took the sedative he had a reaction to it. His face became flushed and it took a couple of hours to go away. We had waited an hour for the chemotherapy to go through and then the doctor said because of the reaction we would have to wait at least an hour. The doctor didn't want to give Alex anything as it would make him sleepy.
We left at around 3:30 p.m., when we got to the car Alex said he had to go to the bathroom. I had a lot of trouble understanding Alex, it sounded like his tongue was swollen.
We went back to the clinic, I asked the nurse if it was normal. Another doctor came and looked at Alex and said Alex would have to drink something and she wanted Alex to sit up. Alex had a lot of trouble sitting up, he was very drowsy from the sedative. He had something to drink and he seemed okay. The doctor came and checked him and said he could go home.
We went to Mom and Dad's as we were afraid Alex might have a reaction. Dad and Charlie went and got fish and chips for dinner.
Alex slept all the time we were there. He woke up for a moment when we left. We got home before eight o'clock and Alex went back to sleep. Alex had his medincine before he went to sleep. I got ready for bed after eleven o'clock.
