Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 22, 1987

Charlie woke me up at 6:30 a.m. We had to be at the hospital by 8:30 a.m. Alex had stayed in his bed all night, which is the first time since we have been home. Alex was still asleep so I didn’t bother waking him up.

I had breakfast, showered and then got dressed.

Alex got up after seven o’clock. He was quite cranky which isn’t unusual. He just wanted cheese and crackers for breakfast. He wanted to take pea soup to the hospital, so we put a can of pea soup in the thermos.

We left at 7:45 p.m. and got to the hospital by 8:30 p.m. There was only one other child there. Alex wanted his soup right away, so he sat at the table and had the whole thermos. The nurse gave Alex his sedative, she didn’t give him one of the sedatives as he had an allergic reaction to it. The sedative he’s allergic to is Phenergan.

At 10:30 a.m. Alex, Charlie and I went into the treatment room, Alex wasn’t sleepy at all, he was wide awake. Alex was aware of everything that was going on. Alex cried quite a lot, the spinal tap didn’t bother him too much. The bone marrow bothered him more he said it hurt his legs. The doctor has to push quite a number of times to get the blood from the bone marrow and they also take a chip of bone.

Charlie had to turn away but it didn’t bother me too much. After it was finished Alex got to pick a prize from the treasure chest. He got a puzzle.

Before the bone marrow and spinal tap Alex had blood taken. Alex got a prize from another treasure chest.

Alex went back to the play and waiting room and laid down on a bed. Charlie got him something to eat then Alex went to sleep.

We left the hospital before noon. Alex went and slept in our bed. I went shopping and bought him a croquet set. I’m trying to find him some quieter toys. I don’t want him to be too active in his condition.

I got home before four o’clock and woke Alex up for his medicine. We now have to taper the prednisone which we all will be glad of. Alex went back to sleep, Charlie went and got dinner. Charlie and I had dinner after five o’clock. Alex didn’t wake up until after seven o’clock. He had dinner, then we played croquet and did his puzzle.

Alex said he was hungry but I told him his stomach was too tight and he had to wait. He said okay. He still wants cheezies but he ate a whole big bag this week. He can have another bag next week.

AT 10:00 p.m. Alex had his medicine, he had 10 mg.

Alex is coloring with the crayons and book he got from the hospital.

We’re going to bed, it’s eleven o’clock.
