Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 29, 1987

The alarm woke me up at 7:30 a.m. It sure was an exhausting night. I woke Alex up at midnight and got him to go to the bathroom. I tried to get him to drink something but he kept on telling me he was too tired. After half an hour he said he was going to be sick. Charlie got him some ginger ale and I told Alex to try not to throw-up and to try to calm down.

Alex drank a glass of ginger ale and then after he had drank it he threw up. I phoned the hospital and they said to give Alex some gravol. Alex said he felt okay and wanted some pea soup. He had about half a bowl then he went to bed. Alex said he wanted to sleep in our bed so Alex and I slept together, Charlie slept in Alex’s bed.

After about ten minutes Alex threw up again all over the sheets and pillow case. I gave Alex some gravol and he threw up some more . After that Alex didn’t throw up any more but he still complained his stomach hurt. I rubbed his stomach for awhile and then I just left my hand on his stomach and he fell asleep.

At 7:30 a.m. Alex and I got out of bed. I got Alex dressed then Alex went and asked Charlie to get him breakfast. I gave Alex his medicine he now takes 2.5 mg of Prednisone and he still has to take Bactrim until June 11th.

I had breakfast and then had a shower and got ready to go to the hospital. We have to be there at ten o’clock. We left the house at 9:30 a.m. and we arrived at the hospital at 10:10 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m. Alex had a spinal tap. They didn’t give Alex a sedative as they thought he would be okay. Alex screamed and cried but he didn’t move too much. Krisann had to hold Alex tight which he hates but they were afraid he might move when they put the needle in. After they drew the fluid off Krisann let go of Alex and he calmed right down. We showed him a pop-up book and he was okay. Alex picked another puzzle and then they got ready for the ARA-C shot. Alex had the shot in his right arm. Lenore told me it hurts more than having an I.V. Alex cried when they put it in but not for long.

Alex picked another prize from the other treasure box.

After eleven o’clock Krisann gave Alex some gravol, at 11:30 a.m. we left the hospital and went home.

We had lunch, Alex and Charlie had macaroni in a soup. I had cheese and a bun.

I went to the mall to buy Shirley a birthday present as it’s her birthday tomorrow.

I came back at 2:46 p.m., Charlie was a bit mad, he left right away. Charlie said Alex had thrown up about four times. Alex was lying in our bed. Alex got out of bed and showed me the puzzle Charlie had done.

Alex was in the kitchen and said his throat hurt and he was going to throw up. Before I could get a bowl he threw up on the floor. He threw up again into a bowl and then I got him some ginger ale and put him in our bed.

I phoned the hospital at three o’clock and they said to give him some more gravol. I gave Alex the gravol and lied with him in our bed and rubbed and held his stomach until four o’clock. By then he was okay.

Krisann said the nausea would last about two hours and he should be okay by dinner time.

Alex had pea soup after five o’clock, he finished the whole can. I didn’t want him to eat too much or anything too heavy just in case he got sick all over again.

We watched TV and did two of Alex’s puzzles. Alex went to bed before nine o’clock.

I wrote in the journal until ten o’clock. I’ll get ready for bed soon, I want to clean up the kitchen first.
