Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 21, 1987

Alex and I woke up around eight o’clock, Charlie went into Alex’s bed around six o’clock. Charlie said it was too bright. Alex wanted pea soup for breakfast. I got him dressed and tried to talk him out of having pea soup but there was no way. He wanted it really badly, Alex had one bowl and wanted another one but I told him he couldn’t have any more that he had to wait two hours. He had a fit but I stood my ground and at ten o’clock he had a snack. He had one piece of cheese, a cracker, roast beef and four pieces of broccoli. He said he was still hungry but I told he had to wait until lunchtime. We went for a walk and that got his mind off it.

Alex had macaroni and cheese and pea soup for lunch. Then we went to Maple Ridge to see Rick Hansen, we had to wait quite awhile but we got to see him. Alex sat in the car while Charlie and I stood outside and saw him wheel by in his wheelchair.

We went to Dairy Queen after and then we went to London Drugs and Save-on-Foods. Alex and I stayed in the car while Charlie went in the stores.

We came home after four o’clock and started dinner. After we had dinner Alex said he was still hungry. We went for a walk around 6:30 p.m. and when we came back Alex had a bath. We have a problem getting Alex to have a bath. He seems very scared, it seems like he thinks he’s going to hurt himself. After his bath he had a snack and his medicine.

Then he watched a movie we rented, Dumbo. He said he was still hungry but I told him he couldn’t have any more. Alex’s stomach is now soft so his eating less is helping a lot. He doesn’t seem to have any trouble breathing now. Alex went to bed after ten o’clock.

I got ready for bed around eleven o’clock.
