Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 31, 1987

The alarm woke us up at eight o’clock. We have to be at the hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. I’m so tired I wish I could sleep in this weekend but it looks like I won’t be able to sleep in for the whole month of June. Alex’s shots are scheduled for Friday to Monday.

I got Alex dressed then Alex went to ask Charlie to get him breakfast. I had a shower then I got ready to go to the hospital. We left the house at nine o’clock and reached the hospital at 9:30 a.m.

The medication wasn’t there yet so the nurse phoned the pharmacy. The pharmacy said they would mix it up and send it over.

We waited about 15 or 20 minutes. Two nurses came into the playroom where we were and asked us to bring Alex. One of the nurses asked me if Alex knew what was going to happen. I told her I didn’t tell him as it always makes it worse.

We were going to go into the treatment room but it was occupied so the nurses took us into room 8. That’s the room Alex stayed in before. He sure hasn’t forgotten where he stayed, he even remembers how he changed beds.

Alex cried a little bit but he was really good. The nurse brought the treasure chest out to the hall for Alex to pick his prize. Alex chose a prehistoric animal.

We left the hospital and got home around eleven o’clock. Alex had lunch and then I told him he had to have a nap as Shirley, Aaron, Brent and Monique were coming over for dinner.

I went out to get a couple of movies for tonight and to get a birthday cake. It was Shirley’s birthday yesterday and when Alex found out it was her birthday he wanted to have a birthday party for her. He said this when he was still on Prednisone which was pretty surprising as all he ever thought of was food.

I came back at 12:30 p.m., I had a terrible headache and I took some panadol. Alex still hadn’t had his nap yet. I put him in his bed and told him to stay there even if he wasn’t tired. He complained he wasn’t tired and even tried to come out of his room. I told him to go back to bed or I’d phone Brent and tell him to stay home. That made him furious but he finally fell asleep after one o’clock and he slept until 3:45 p.m. when I woke him up.

I went to have a bath, I thought it might help my headache go away. Then I got dressed. Shirley came by herself, she had been out earlier and she said it was easier if she went home anytime she wanted too.

Aaron and the kids came before five o’clock. The hockey game was on so we watched the game. It was the finals Oilers vs. Flyers.

We had B.B.Q steak, pork and ribs with salad, cauliflower, mushrooms and buns. We had black forest cake with ice cream for dessert.

Alex and Brent played really well together. I had to keep an eye on them as I didn’t want them to play too rough. Alex and Brent watched a Mickey mouse movie while we watch Heartburn.

Aaron and Brent left after nine o’clock. Shirley and Monique stayed until ten o’clock.

Alex had his medicine, he complained the whole time he took it. He finally went to bed around ten thirty. We went to bed by eleven o’clock.
