Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 18, 1987

I woke up around nine o’clock, my eyes are bothering me. I went and looked in the mirror and my eyes were swollen. I phoned the doctor and I got an appointment for 12:45 p.m.

Charlie had gotten Alex dressed and was giving Alex his breakfast. Alex had a can of pea soup and wanted some pancakes with me. Later Alex had some cream of mushroom soup and a small pizza.

I was feeling pretty bad my eyes felt so swollen, I could really feel them. Charlie had gone grocery shopping and by the time he got back it was time for me to go.

I got to the doctors, I saw Dr. M as he was the doctor on call. The doctor said it was probably an allergy and he gave me a prescription. I went to London Drugs and got it filled. I got home after one o’clock. I took the pills around 1:30 p.m. By two o’clock I was feeling pretty drowsy.

Alex had a nap after I left and woke up after two o’clock. Charlie watched Alex while I had a sleep. I woke up after four o’clock and I was sick to my stomach.

Charlie had dinner all ready so we ate after five o’clock. Alex ate about half his dinner. Then he said he had to have a rest so he went to lie down.

Alex didn’t sleep he stayed in bed for a short period. Alex said he wanted some more pea soup. He ate a bowl of soup. Laura phoned and said they were coming over. They came before seven o’clock. Alex wouldn’t talk to any of them. He doesn’t seem to want to talk to anyone but Charlie and myself. Mr & Mrs Chew, Laura, Andrea and Robert had come, they left around 7:30 p.m.

Just after they left Alex said he had to have rice. He had a temper tantrum, so Charlie made him the rice and when he got it he only ate two spoonfuls, he said didn’t want it. He said he wanted roast beef and potatoes that we had for dinner.

Alex wanted some shrimp crackers, so Charlie made him some and he took his medicine. Alex went to bed around ten o’clock.

My eyes are getting worse, the swelling is getting worse and the skin is quite itchy. I took another pill at ten o’clock. I got ready for bed at 10:30 p.m.
