Diagnosis: Leukemia; May 30, 1987

Charlie woke me up before eight o’clock. We have to be at the hospital between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Alex woke up shortly after. I got out of bed, I got Alex dressed then Alex asked Charlie to get him breakfast. I had a shower and got ready to go.

We left the house at nine o’clock, we arrived at the hospital by 9:30 a.m. We went to the nurses station and told a nurse that Alex was here. The nurse, Laurel looked at the board, I told her Alex was an out patient. She said oh we weren’t expecting anyone today. I thought oh no I hope we don’t have to stay too long.

We went into the playroom while they checked everything out. Laurel came and told us it wasn’t up from the pharmacy and it would be 15 minutes before it would be up.

Laurel called us after about twenty minutes to go into the treatment room. Alex had his ARA-C shot, he blew bubbles while another nurse put the needle in. Alex was really good, he hardly cried at all.

Alex picked a toy moose out of the treasure chest and the nurse gave us two dimenhydrinate pills She said to give Alex ¼ of the pill every four hours.

We left the hospital and went home. We got home around eleven o’clock. We had lunch around noon. Before that I gave Alex a ¼ of the dimenhydrinate pill. After lunch Alex played with the puzzles, games and his cars.

Charlie left at 4:30 p.m. to get us a pizza for dinner from Boston Pizza. Alex and I watched TV while we waited. Charlie got back at 5:30 p.m. as they made a mistake, they thought we wanted a small individual instead of a small.

We had dinner and then we got ready to go to Mom and Dad’s. Alex got a Mickey mouse hat from Mom and Dad. We left around nine o’clock.

Alex fell asleep in the car and I had to wake him up to take his medicine. Alex was furious he said he wanted to go to sleep. I finally got Alex to take his medicine after a lot of screaming and yelling.

I got Alex ready for bed at 10:30 p.m., now he is wide awake and he’s talking a mile a minute.

Charlie and I went to bed shortly afterwards. Alex climbed into bed at eleven o’clock.
