Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 17, 1987

I woke up around eight o’clock. I had a shower and got dressed. We have to be at the hospital at ten o’clock. I gave Alex his medicine and he had cereal for breakfast. I got Alex dressed and brushed his teeth. We left the house at 9:30 a.m.

We arrived at the hospital at ten o’clock. It was really quiet which is unusual. Alex had his shot and I asked Dr S if Alex could go to Carrie’s party. The doctor said Alex shouldn’t go because if Alex was to get sick his treatment would have to stop for about three weeks.

We left the hospital at eleven o’clock and went to a Won Ton House for a take out. We came home and had lunch. After lunch I explained to Alex that Dr S didn’t want Alex to go because he might get sick. He said that it was okay.

Charlie went outside to cut the grass. Alex is playing with his cars and trucks.

Alex and I went for a walk with Kelly, surprisingly enough Alex wanted to walk.

I phoned Mom and she said she has a cold, I’ll have to ask Dr S if Alex can come in contact with her.

Charlie went to work around 2:45 p.m. I vacuumed the house then Alex and I played some games. Alex made up a new game today. He said to me, you haven’t had a poke for awhile so it’s time for your poke. We sat on the bed and Alex said this is a really big poke. He told me to start blowing bubbles and then he poked my hand. I made out that it really hurt and started blowing bubbles faster. He said it doesn’t hurt anymore, I’ve stopped poking you. You can stop blowing bubbles.

We had dinner at five o’clock and Alex ate most of his dinner. I bought chocolate syrup to put on ice cream, I thought it might help Alex eat ice cream. Ever since the nurse put medicine on his ice cream Alex won’t eat it. I gave Alex vanilla ice cream with the syrup but he wouldn’t eat it.

After dinner we went downstairs and cleaned the basement, then we went outside watered the bedding plants and played with the soccer ball. Alex and I threw it back and forth.

We came in the house at 7:30 p.m., made popcorn and watched TV. I got Alex ready for bed and Annie called. I finally got off the phone at 9:15 p.m. Alex told me to get off the phone, he wanted to go to sleep. I read Alex a story and he went to sleep after ten o’clock.

I had to give Alex colace as he hasn’t had a bowel movement since Saturday or Sunday. I gave him half the dose this time as he usually has diarrhea when he has it.

I wrote in the journal for half an hour. I’ll go to bed soon.
