Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 18, 1987

I woke up at eight o’clock. I got Alex dressed, Charlie got Alex his breakfast. We got ready to go to the hospital, we have to be there at ten o’clock. We left the house at 9:30 a.m.

We got to the hospital after ten o’clock. Child life was there and they were getting the kids to make Father’s Day cards. Alex and I made one together. Alex had his shot and we left.

We stopped at London Drugs on the way home. We got home at 11:45 a.m. I had lunch and gave Alex some more gravol. I went out shopping, I bought a present for Carrie.

I came home after two o’clock. Alex and I played downstairs for awhile. Alex watched TV at four o’clock, he started to fall asleep so I woke him up. I knew if he fell asleep he would be up all night.

We had dinner at five o’clock and then we went outside and did some gardening. We came in at 7:30 p.m. Alex had a snack and his medicine. Alex said he wanted to play on his bed before he went to sleep, but he wouldn’t put away his toys or his clothes. Usually he helps me put away his laundry, he puts away his underwear and his socks. I told him he had to help or he would go right to bed. He said NO and when I said fine you can go right to bed. He said I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I said I’m sorry but it’s too late, please get into bed. He cried but he was asleep in minutes.

I did some knitting for an hour and a half. I phoned Laura and told her Alex couldn’t come to Carrie’s party. Laura said Oh you talked to Jolene a couple of days ago? I said yes and she said I guess she told you that they split up. I said WHAT! Laura said Don’t tell her I told you.

It sure was a shock, you just don’t know what is in store for each of us. I felt really bad for them. They’ve been married a really long time. They both must be experiencing a lot of pain. I feel that the reason they haven’t told us is that we have gone through so much lately.

I wrote in the journal for about half an hour.

I’m going to bed, it’s 11:20 p.m.
