Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 3, 1987

I woke up around nine o’clock. Alex had come into bed with us during the night. He had gotten up around eight o’clock. I was awake but I went back to sleep. I didn’t get to sleep until after midnight. I was taking Alex’s temperature every hour, by midnight it had gone down.

I had breakfast and then had a shower and got dressed.

Alex had a bowl of cereal for breakfast and half an apple for a snack. Charlie made steamed chicken with steamed rice. Alex said he couldn’t wait. Charlie gave Alex a plate of chicken and rice. Alex didn’t eat very much. I put it in the fridge so he could have it for dinner.

Alex is very demanding right now. He tells us to get what ever he wants and if I tell him no, he usually makes a big deal out of it.

Today he was ordering me around like I was his servant. He’s really taking advantage of his being sick. Alex is a lot better than he was when he was first diagnosed. I feel he’s almost back to the way he use to be.

We all went for a walk, Alex rode his bike. Hopefully it’ll help strength his legs.

I had lunch when we got back and Charlie went out to buy some groceries.

Alex had some pea soup, he ate about half a bowl. He argued with me as I wanted to watch game shows while I had my lunch. He told me to go and watch TV in our room so he could watch his show in the living room. I wouldn’t have minded if he had asked me nicely but he orders me to go into another room and I will not stand for that. I let him know how I feel and he sure doesn’t like it.

Alex and I went to the basement. Alex played while I cleaned up the basement. Then we went to the garage. I swept the floor and Alex rode his bike on the driveway.

I started dinner after four o’clock. Alex wanted me to play taxi downstairs but I was too tired, he started screaming. I told him I was tired and wanted a rest.

We had dinner after five o’clock. Alex didn’t eat much rice and chicken.

Alex seemed to argue a lot tonight. Whatever I said it was wrong, it just didn’t seem to matter what I said!

I did some knitting while Alex played with his cars.

Mom phoned around seven o’clock and as usual Alex interrupted me and did a few things to cause trouble. He even asked me to read him a story while I was on the phone.

I got Alex ready for bed at eight o’clock. He played in his bed with his cars. He finally fell asleep at nine o’clock.

I did some more knitting from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. I started writing in the journal at 10:30 p.m. I’ll get ready for bed soon, it’s 11:15 p.m.
