Diagnosis: Leukemia; June 5, 1987

Charlie woke us up around eight o’clock. We had to be at the hospital by 9:30 a.m. While I had a shower and got dressed Charlie got Alex dressed.

Alex’s appetite has gone back to normal where he doesn’t eat too much especially for breakfast. He had two bites of a toast then he asked for cereal but he didn’t eat much of it.

We left the house after nine o’clock. We were late getting there but it didn’t seem to matter. They were a lot of people there, there weren’t any beds left.

We waited about an hour before they did anything. Lenore took us into a room and she did a small I.V. This was to take blood and then put the ARA-C in. At least Alex didn’t have to have two pokes. We waited a little while longer in the waiting area then a doctor was ready to do Alex’s Lumbar Puncture. Alex screamed a lot during it but it was because they had to hold him really tight. After we finished Dr R talked to us and said the doctor who did the LP would check Alex. The doctor checked Alex and gave us a prescription for Bactrim.

Before we went into the treatment room for the LP , Janice (social worker) came by to talk to us. In front of Alex I told her what sort of things Alex had been doing and what his behaviour is like. Next thing I know Alex has left and was playing on the opposite end of the room.

We had to wait an hour after Alex had the LP, he has to lie down. This was to prevent him from getting a headache. The doctor said they can get a headache for three days and it makes them quite ill.

We left the hospital at 12:30 p.m., Alex was asleep but when we got to the car he woke up. Alex said his throat and stomach hurt which usually means he is going to throw up. I put a blanket around him and got a plastic bag ready just in case. Alex didn’t throw up in the car.

I put him in his bed when we got home and got him to take some gravol. Just as I was putting it in his mouth he started to throw up. I took him into the bathroom so he could throw up into the toilet but he stopped. Then I cleaned his teeth and got him to take some mouthwash.

I put Alex in our bed and he slept for a hour or so. He threw up some more and I cleaned his teeth again and he took some mouthwash.

Alex had a few bites of a cheese sandwich and a couple grapes. He went back to sleep and slept until three o’clock.

Annie phoned twice, the first time I told her I would phone her back. The second time an hour later she said did you try to phone me? I said no and she said oh, because I was on the phone to the bank. Then she starts telling me her problems as usual. I tell her about Alex but it seems like she’s not really interested, she just wants my advice about her problem.

Finally I told her I had to check Alex and give him some more medicine. I didn’t have to give Alex any medicine but it was the only way to get off the phone. I feel bad doing things like that but if I don’t I’d be on the phone for a couple of hours at least.

Mom phoned not long after I got off and said, Annie must of phoned. I said yes. She said isn’t it terrible that she keeps you on the phone. I then told her what I did to get off. Mom said that’s the only way though.

Alex woke up and wanted me to sit with him and watch TV. Then at four o’clock Charlie went out, Alex and I did the new puzzle. Ten minutes later he threw up all over himself, the dining room chair and little on the carpet.

I got him changed and then we watched TV again, until Charlie came back with dinner.

Alex didn’t eat much as he said it hurt when he ate.

After dinner I told Alex I was taking Kelly for a walk and he could sit with Pa. Alex said he wanted to go, so we all went. Alex rode his bike which is rather amazing since he had been sick not long ago.

At seven o’clock I went to the mall to look for a booster car seat. I came back at eight o’clock, Alex was feeling fine now. He was running around as usual. At nine thirty I gave Alex the Bactrim and he spat it out. He really made me mad and we had a big fight. I yelled at him and he yelled at me.

I got him ready for bed and brushed his teeth and got him to take some mouthwash.

Alex was asleep by ten o’clock. I cleaned the house and wrote in the journal. I went to bed at eleven thirty.
